Key takeaways
- Barren’s Coop is a minor Lower City location in Act Three, in the Eastway district.
- Its only entrance is a locked door around X 45, Y: -114. The door can be lockpicked or destroyed, and entering it is not treated as trespassing.
- If Mayrina was saved in Act One, the building contains an Eviction Notice, Anti-Hag Support Group material and a letter directing the party to Old Garlow’s Place.
- If the party sided with Auntie Ethel, or never encountered Ethel and Mayrina, the interior changes. The hag-survivor documents are absent and Calishem Awaits replaces the group’s research journal.
- The location’s main purpose is investigative rather than lucrative There is no merchant, service, combat encounter or named resident here.
- Reading an Anti-Hag Support Group poster can start Help the Hag Survivors if that quest is not already active.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Three, the Help the Hag Survivors quest, and outcomes connected to Auntie Ethel and Mayrina.
Overview
Barren’s Coop is a small private building in the Eastway district of Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not a settlement, commercial business or combat arena. Instead, it is a short but important investigation site connected to the hag-survivor storyline.
The building is the former meeting place of Mayrina’s Anti-Hag Support Group. By the time most characters reach it, the group has already been evicted after supernatural disturbances began affecting the property. Exploring the building reveals where the survivors have gone and advances Help the Hag Survivors towards Old Garlow’s Place.
Barren’s Coop is easy to miss because it has no waypoint of its own, no resident NPC and no obvious quest-giver standing outside. It is also easy to confuse with the neighbouring Guildhall Entrance, Felogyr’s Fireworks, Peartree’s Home or Vonayn’s Home. Those are separate locations and are not subareas of the coop.
---
Location and boundaries
Barren’s Coop is a single small building rather than a broad neighbourhood or multi-level district. Its scope consists of:
The surrounding buildings are separate locations. In particular:
The coop stands near the transition into territory controlled by the Guild, but it is not part of the Guildhall. The Guildhall Entrance is a separate guarded access point in a ruined building behind the coop.
Neighbouring places, not subareas
These locations should not be merged into a single “Barren’s Coop area”. They are nearby Lower City locations with their own entries, characters and quest associations.

Location and boundaries: steps
- 01The exterior entrance and immediate street frontage.
- 02The main interior room.
- 03The building’s readable notes, posters and container.
- 04The nearby descent route leading towards Vonayn’s Home and the Heapside Strand shoreline.
Getting there
From the Heapside Strand waypoint
The most direct route is from the Heapside Strand waypoint:
The building is north-east of the Heapside Strand waypoint, making that waypoint the most useful starting point for a deliberate visit.
From Felogyr’s Fireworks
Barren’s Coop is immediately to the east of Felogyr’s Fireworks. If you are investigating the fireworks building or approaching from the western side of the Lower City, follow the street towards the Guild-controlled section. The coop is the small private building before the Guildhall approach.
From the Guildhall Entrance
The Guildhall Entrance is east of Barren’s Coop. If Tusgront or the Guild guards are blocking your route, do not assume the coop is part of the guarded entrance. Barren’s Coop can be entered independently and is not itself a restricted Guild location.
Alternate descent
A break in the stone railing and a set of knotted roots near the coop allow the party to descend to the porch of Vonayn’s Home and continue towards Heapside Strand. This is a traversal connection, not a second entrance into the coop.
---
From the Heapside Strand waypoint
- 01Fast travel to Heapside Strand.
- 02Leave the waypoint and head north-east through the nearby Lower City streets.
- 03Look for the small building with the locked entrance around X: 45, Y: -114.
- 04Open the door by lockpicking it or destroying it.
- 05Search the interior for the eviction notice, posters and the letter pointing towards Old Garlow’s Place.
Access and security
The front door is locked but does not count as a restricted area. A character can attempt to open it with Sleight of Hand, with a listed difficulty of DC 10. The door may also be destroyed.
Because the building is not treated as restricted, opening the door does not normally provoke a law-enforcement response merely because it is locked. Nevertheless, as with any destructible or locked object in the Lower City, players should avoid assuming that every nearby NPC will ignore unrelated crimes or hostile actions.
There is no fixed guard, Flaming Fist checkpoint or Guild patrol inside the location.

History and progression state
The building’s contents depend on what happened in Act One during Save Mayrina.
If Mayrina was saved from Auntie Ethel
Barren’s Coop was temporarily used by the Anti-Hag Support Group, founded and led by Mayrina. The group’s activities eventually caused magical and disturbing incidents inside the rented building. The landlord responded by evicting them.
The eviction notice describes phenomena including snowstorms inside the house and blood appearing to flow from the windows. The landlord’s complaint gives the location much of its character: the coop is not abandoned because of ordinary poverty or structural damage, but because the tenants brought the consequences of hag-related magic to the neighbourhood.
If the party sided with the hag
If the party sided with Auntie Ethel in the Sunlit Wetlands, the Anti-Hag Support Group material does not appear. The eviction notice is also absent.
In this version of the location, the research journal is replaced by Calishem Awaits, a book associated with Adrielle. It explains that she was unable to find enough fellow hag victims to form a group and intended to try her luck in Calimshan, apparently misspelled in the text as “Calishem”.
If the party never encountered Ethel or Mayrina
The building likewise lacks the Anti-Hag Support Group’s documents and eviction notice. The alternative book state applies rather than the survivor-group version.
Important progression warning
The presence or absence of the documents is a consequence of earlier story decisions, not a randomised layout. The location does not contain a separate encounter that recreates the group’s meeting. By the time the party reaches the building, the survivors have moved on.
---
The Anti-Hag Support Group
The group is a network of people affected by hags, with Mayrina acting as its organiser after her own ordeal with Auntie Ethel. Barren’s Coop was intended to be a place where victims could meet, share information and work out how to resist hag magic.
Their stay is already over when the party arrives. This makes the coop function as a narrative trace rather than a social hub. The posters, notes and research materials show the group’s work, while the eviction notice shows the ordinary-world cost of their supernatural struggle.
The group’s new refuge is Old Garlow’s Place, which becomes the next major location in Help the Hag Survivors.
Named entries associated with the coop
The survivors themselves are not resident NPCs at this location in the relevant Act Three state. They have moved to Old Garlow’s Place.

Items, documents and points of interest
Eviction Notice
The Eviction Notice is the clearest indication that the building was occupied by the hag survivors and that they were forced out. It can be revealed by a DC 10 Perception check when entering the building in the Mayrina-saved state.
Reading it updates the party’s understanding of the site and reinforces that the group has not simply disappeared.
Anti-Hag Support Group Posters
The posters advertise or identify the survivor group. If Help the Hag Survivors is not already active, reading one can start the quest.
The posters are therefore useful even when the party did not arrive at Barren’s Coop through a quest marker. A player who discovers the building independently can still connect it to the wider hag-survivor storyline.
Kled’s note
The note associated with Kled is the essential navigation clue. It reveals that the survivors have moved to Old Garlow’s Place.
Search the table in the room to find it. Simply entering the building may not be enough to advance the quest if the note has not been examined.
Hag Research Notes or research journal
The wooden chest in the far corner contains the group’s research material in the Mayrina-saved state, along with alchemical ingredients. The notes document the group’s attempts to find methods that could work against hags.
The exact presentation may vary between the named journal material and associated hag-research literature, but the important distinction is the progression state:
Calishem Awaits
This book replaces the research journal in the alternative story state. It is associated with Adrielle’s failure to gather enough hag victims and her intention to travel to Calimshan.
The book is a lore outcome rather than a combat reward or quest item.
Alchemical ingredients
The chest also contains alchemical ingredients in the survivor-group state. These are ordinary resource pickups rather than a unique named piece of equipment. The available ingredients should be treated as fixed local loot, not a guaranteed high-value reward.
Complete document directory
Depending on story state, the verified named literature associated with Barren’s Coop includes:
Not every title necessarily appears simultaneously in every playthrough. Some are linked to the surrounding quest’s posters and correspondence rather than guaranteed to be placed inside the coop at the same time.

Walkthrough: investigating Barren’s Coop
If the quest is not active
The quest can also be connected to other evidence in the Lower City, including material found around the Blushing Mermaid. The game may therefore direct the party to the coop through more than one investigative route.
---
If Help the Hag Survivors is already active
- 01Travel to the Lower City.
- 02Reach the Barren’s Coop entrance near X: 45, Y: -114.
- 03Lockpick or destroy the locked door.
- 04Allow the party’s Perception checks to resolve.
- 05Read the Eviction Notice if it appears.
- 06Search the table and read Kled’s note or the Barely-Legible Letter.
- 07Loot the chest for the hag research material and alchemical ingredients.
- 08Follow the quest to Old Garlow’s Place.
If the quest is not active
- 01Find and read an Anti-Hag Support Group Poster.
- 02If the poster starts Help the Hag Survivors, travel to Barren’s Coop.
- 03Enter the building.
- 04Read the eviction and relocation documents.
- 05Continue to Old Garlow’s Place.
Recommended exploration route
This route avoids accidentally treating the nearby Guildhall Entrance as part of the coop and keeps the hag-survivor investigation in chronological order.
---
For a clean first visit
- 01Start at Heapside Strand.
- 02Travel north-east to Barren’s Coop.
- 03Search the mailbox and exterior area before entering.
- 04Open the front door.
- 05Read every visible document before leaving.
- 06Descend through the broken railing only if you want to reach Vonayn’s Home or return towards the beach.
- 07Continue to Old Garlow’s Place rather than spending time searching for a resident group that is no longer there.
Quests and activities
Help the Hag Survivors
This is the only verified quest directly associated with Barren’s Coop. It begins from Anti-Hag Support Group material and uses the coop as an intermediate investigation site.
The coop’s part of the quest is simple:
The larger quest continues with the survivors, Mayrina’s curse, the voodoo doll and the revelation concerning Jatlo. Barren’s Coop itself does not contain those later encounters.
No combat encounter
There is no fixed boss, enemy group or mandatory battle inside Barren’s Coop. The redcap confrontation involving Jatlo takes place later at Old Garlow’s Place, not here.
No merchant or service
Barren’s Coop contains no verified merchant, crafting station, purchasable property, healing facility, camp facility or vendor service. Its practical rewards are documents, minor ingredients and quest progression.
---
Hazards and secrets
The most significant hazards are narrative rather than mechanical.
Hag-related supernatural effects
The eviction notice refers to abnormal events affecting the building. These details are evidence of what happened after the survivors began working against hag magic. They do not create a separate environmental hazard or damage effect during normal exploration.
Missable evidence
The location’s evidence can become unavailable or change depending on Act One decisions:
Because these are progression-state changes rather than random loot rolls, players should not reload expecting the same documents to appear after a normal visit.
The nearby descent
The broken railing and hanging roots provide a useful route towards Vonayn’s Home and Heapside Strand. This is a traversal detail, not a hidden dungeon entrance and not a secret coop subarea.
---
Lore and interpretation
Barren’s Coop is a small example of how Baldur’s Gate 3 lets major quest themes appear in ordinary urban spaces. The building is not a temple, lair or formal headquarters. It is a rented property whose owner wants the tenants gone because supernatural incidents are damaging the neighbourhood.
That contrast matters. The anti-hag movement exists outside official institutions, relying on temporary rooms, handwritten notices and improvised research. Their refuge is fragile, and the eviction shows how quickly a community formed around trauma can be displaced.
The alternative Calishem Awaits state presents a different outcome. Without a successful survivor network, Adrielle is left without enough people to organise with and considers leaving for Calimshan. The same small building therefore records two different consequences of the Act One hag storyline: a community that briefly formed, or an isolated survivor who failed to find one.
