About this guide
Base game, Act Three Location type: Flaming Fist barracks, checkpoint, execution ground and small prison Region: Lower City, Baldur’s Gate Waypoint: Basilisk Gate, X: 134, Y: -38 Major associated quests: Free Counsellor Florrick, Save Vanra, Stop the Presses, Find Dribbles the Clown, Investigate the Murders Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Act Three quests, prison arrests, Counsellor Florrick, Vanra, Orin’s murders and several potentially time-sensitive developments.
Overview
Basilisk Gate Barracks is one of the most useful administrative locations in the Lower City, although it is easy to mistake it for no more than the Flaming Fist checkpoint beside the Basilisk Gate waypoint. The named location is broader than the main office. It includes the raised training yard, the barracks office and domestic rooms, the execution ground and gallows outside, and the underground Heapside Prison. A small nearby bath-house is also relevant to the location because it contains one of the bodies connected to Find Dribbles the Clown.
The complex is important for more than its scenery. It is where the Lower City’s law-enforcement machinery is displayed most openly: petitioners wait for officers, prisoners are held before execution, confiscated goods are stored, the Steel Watch patrols alongside the Flaming Fist, and the gallows serves as a public symbol of Gortash’s increasingly authoritarian rule.
It is also a junction for several unrelated-looking Act Three threads. The party can begin Save Vanra here, obtain the first clear lead for Free Counsellor Florrick, meet Estra Stir during Stop the Presses, encounter Skittle the rat trader in prison, and use the prison’s drainage access to reach the Lower City Sewers.
What belongs to Basilisk Gate Barracks?
The location is positioned immediately north of the Basilisk Gate entrance. Basilisk Gate is the transition point into the Lower City and, after the party has entered the city, the route towards Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. The barracks occupy the corner of the city wall, while the open area in front of them functions as an execution ground.
For practical exploration, treat the complex as five connected or closely associated sections:
The execution ground is not a separate city district. It is the open forecourt of the barracks, dominated by the gallows. The bath-house is less clearly labelled as an interior barracks room, but it is directly relevant to the complex and its quest content.
Neighbouring locations that are not part of the barracks
The Lower City page lists Basilisk Gate Barracks as one of the region’s individual locations, separate from Baldur’s Mouth, Candulhallow’s Tombstones, Stormshore Tabernacle and the other Lower City buildings.

Neighbouring locations that are not part of the barracks
From Wyrm’s Rock Fortress
The normal story route into the Lower City takes the party through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and out through the North Span. Once in the Lower City, travel towards the Basilisk Gate waypoint. The barracks are immediately north of the gate and are reached by climbing the stone stairs.
From the Lower City
Fast travel to Basilisk Gate and face towards the raised Flaming Fist complex. The main stairs lead up to the training grounds and office. A second wooden staircase runs beside the outer wall and ends at a side door opening onto the training yard. This side entrance is useful when approaching from the wall or when trying to avoid the main flow of guards.
From Heapside Prison
The prison is reached through the northern door inside the barracks office. It is not the same facility as Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Heapside Prison is the smaller Lower City lock-up, while Wyrm’s Rock Prison belongs to the fortress complex.
Via arrest
If a character is caught committing a crime by the Flaming Fist in the Lower City and accepts arrest, that character is transported to a cell in Heapside Prison. This makes the prison available even if the party has not deliberately entered it from the barracks.
---
The training yard is an open inner court enclosed by a stone wall with wooden ramparts above it. Storage is arranged around the practice area, and a Steel Watcher patrols alongside several Flaming Fists. Petitioners wait here before speaking to the officers.
This is primarily a role-playing and observation area rather than a combat dungeon. Many of the soldiers have small conversations, and certain dialogue choices can produce minor companion approval changes. The yard also provides several low-level theft opportunities, including keys and a chest on the ramparts.
Training-yard points of interest
Fist Murphy
Fist Murphy is being punished by standing on one leg after committing a felony. Blaze Portyr has imposed the punishment, while Fist Clover occasionally checks on him during her patrol.
Fist Clover and the rampart chest
Fist Clover patrols the wooden ramparts. Her key can be pickpocketed and opens a wooden chest at the far end of the ramparts. The chest contains:
The contents are not presented as a fixed named weapon reward. Treat them as a small, variable cache rather than a guaranteed unique item.
Fist Koltz, Fist Crosse and Gauntlet Thunder
Fist Koltz and Fist Crosse train under Gauntlet Thunder’s supervision. Their practice occasionally gives them the Exhausted condition.
Fist Eostre
Fist Eostre moves around the yard while counting and rearranging supplies.
Fist Miller
Fist Miller stands by the office entrance. He does not prevent the party from entering the office, and he can be pickpocketed for the Heapside Armoury Key.
Petitioners and confiscated goods
The yard contains citizens waiting to have their complaints heard. Near the gate, Fist Kuthbert oversees cages holding livestock confiscated under the authorities’ new order. The surrounding citizens protest while Kuthbert dismisses their objections.
---
The interior office area consists of the main Flaming Fist office, a small dormitory and a kitchen. The dormitory is marked as restricted, but it contains little of significance. Cook Kameros works in the kitchen.
The office is the most important part of the upper barracks for quest progression. On the first visit, Blaze Portyr is speaking with Manip Seyama while Lora tries to obtain help finding her daughter, Vanra. Blaze’s responses are strange and disconnected. A passive DC 15 Arcana check can identify that she is enchanted. Offering to help Lora begins Save Vanra.
Keys and restricted storage
Blaze Portyr’s key is particularly useful because it opens the prison office storage chests from the other side, avoiding the need to rely solely on high Sleight of Hand checks.
---
Heapside Prison is the underground lock-up beneath Basilisk Gate Barracks. It is smaller than Wyrm’s Rock Prison and appears intended for short-term detention before trial or execution. A letter addressed to Manip Seyama suggests that prisoners are often held only briefly before being condemned.
Three Flaming Fists and a Steel Watcher patrol the area. Their movement patterns make stealth, invisibility and careful timing useful if the party is looting restricted rooms.
Keys and restricted storage
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Office Storage Key | Can be pickpocketed from Blaze Portyr. |
| Heapside Armoury Key | Can be pickpocketed from Fist Miller. |
| Barracks Office Key | Can be pickpocketed from Fist Corlos in the prison. |
If a party member is arrested
An arrested character begins in a cell. The prison offers several ways to escape:
The manhole and pit latrine are two-way connections, allowing travel between the prison and the Lower City Sewers.
If a party member is arrested: steps
- 01Break through the damaged wall section in the cell.
- 02Find the hole in the cell, which requires a DC 5 Perception check to notice.
- 03Break through the barricade behind crates and move into the neighbouring cell.
- 04Take or obtain Fist Smithwynn’s key to open the cell doors.
- 05Use the manhole or pit latrine in the guardroom to reach the Lower City Sewers.
Skittle, the prison trader
Skittle is a rat found inside one of the cells. The party must use Speak with Animals to communicate with him as a trader. He sells various goods, including the Counting House Safe No. 2 Key.
Skittle can still be spoken to through the cell grate if the party enters the prison from the barracks rather than arriving through arrest. His rat-themed dialogue may also produce small amounts of companion approval.
Prison storage
A wooden trunk at approximately X: -1280, Y: 765 contains:
A nearby wooden trunk contains two sets of Thieves’ Tools. Both containers are red-outlined and watched by Fist Arrinye.
These are not presented as named unique rewards. Their contents are best treated as confiscated or random prison supplies.
Prison office
The prison office is restricted. Entering openly can cause the guards to intervene.
The chests contain random arrows and scrolls ranging from uncommon to very rare quality. The smaller chest also contains the Crumbling File, an old, partly censored document concerning the Emperor’s activity in Baldur’s Gate.
Prison armoury
Fist Corlos can be pickpocketed for the Barracks Office Key, which opens the outer armoury door. A copy of the key is kept in a cabinet at approximately X: -1286, Y: 782. The inner route from the prison office is unlocked.
The chest can be opened with the Heapside Armoury Key or with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.
Prison documents
The desks contain paperwork about crime and security in the city. One document is Counsellor Florrick’s Sentence, signed by the tadpoled Duke Ravengard. Reading it does not advance Free Counsellor Florrick, even if that quest is already active. The prison documents are primarily lore and atmosphere rather than quest triggers.
---
The open space outside the barracks is dominated by a large gallows. Fist ‘Edge’ Arensen acts as executioner and discusses the city authorities’ harsh, biased approach to crime and punishment.
Several empty pillories stand near the waypoint. Other bodies may appear in the nooses over the course of the game, reinforcing the impression that the square is being used as a regular public execution site.
Free Counsellor Florrick
If Free Counsellor Florrick has not already started, read the Execution Notice pinned to the gallows platform. This starts the quest. If the quest is active, speaking with Fist ‘Edge’ Arensen may provide information about Florrick’s situation.
If Florrick is not rescued, her body remains on the gallows for several Long Rests, with additional Flaming Fists, including Anderson and Williams, guarding the area.
Stop the Presses
Estra Stir, a reporter for Baldur’s Mouth Gazette, stands near the gallows. Speaking to her begins Stop the Presses.
This quest is time-sensitive and lasts for the length of one Long Rest. Its outcome changes how various Lower City citizens react to the party and can affect the prices of some traders. Avoid taking a Long Rest casually after accepting it.
Fist Kuthbert and the livestock cages
Fist Kuthbert guards cages containing confiscated animals and announces a new order requiring citizens to surrender livestock. Several citizens protest nearby. This is a vignette rather than a full shop or formal service.
The Hudd dwarves
Behind the gallows, Hasmet Hudd, Giftu Hudd and Dryfle Doon discuss their plans after reaching the Lower City. Their conversation presents a quieter civilian perspective on the refugees and armies surrounding Baldur’s Gate.
News Hawker Luan
News Hawker Luan shouts slogans from the gazette and attracts customers. He is a background vendor-style NPC rather than a confirmed full shop service in the barracks.
---
A small unnamed bath-house lies near the barracks. Its entrance is around X: 123, Y: 4 and the door is locked, requiring DC 10 Sleight of Hand to open.
The bath-house is relevant to Find Dribbles the Clown. Inside, the party can find the decapitated body of Gohumberry Tresp, one of the murderous effigies arranged by Orin the Red around the city. This makes the bath-house mission-related access rather than a normal public service or functioning business.

The following directory separates named characters explicitly associated with the barracks category from the more important local roles described in the location layout. The category page contains 40 character pages, including several minor or background figures whose appearances can vary with story progression.
Petitioners, civilians and nearby named characters
The category also lists the following named or background characters associated with the location or its immediate vicinity:
The source category does not, by itself, establish that every one of these minor entries is permanently present in the same visible barracks room, nor that every one offers dialogue or services. They should therefore be treated as a comprehensive category directory, not as a claim that all are central residents.
---
Flaming Fist
The Flaming Fist controls the barracks, investigates crime, processes petitioners and administers executions. Blaze Portyr commands the checkpoint, while Manip Seyama is involved in the office’s administration.
The barracks demonstrates the organisation’s split role in Act Three. It is both a conventional military facility and an instrument of political control. Prisoners are processed for execution, livestock is confiscated, and the Steel Watch supplements ordinary Flaming Fist guards.
Steel Watch
Steel Watchers patrol both the training grounds and Heapside Prison. Their presence makes restricted-area theft more dangerous and reflects the wider militarisation of Baldur’s Gate under Gortash.
Refugees and civilians
The execution ground and gate area contain ordinary citizens, petitioners, travellers and refugees. The Hudd dwarves’ conversation and the livestock dispute show how the authorities’ emergency measures affect people who are not directly involved in the party’s main plot.

The prison is easier to loot with preparation
The prison office and some containers are red-outlined. Entering openly can cause guards to intervene. Before attempting a theft:
Do not confuse the two prison complexes
Heapside Prison is beneath Basilisk Gate Barracks. Wyrm’s Rock Prison is a separate facility in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. They have different layouts, guards and story contexts.
Stop the Presses can expire
After speaking with Estra Stir, avoid taking a Long Rest until the quest’s immediate objective is complete. The outcome affects the Lower City’s public reaction and some trader prices.
Florrick’s fate changes the square
If Counsellor Florrick is not saved, her body can remain on the gallows for several Long Rests and the area gains additional guards. The execution ground therefore changes according to progression rather than remaining identical throughout Act Three.
The bath-house is easy to overlook
The bath-house looks like a minor scenery building and is not presented as a conventional shop or public facility. Its relevance comes from Find Dribbles the Clown, where it contains Gohumberry Tresp’s body. The door is locked and requires DC 10 Sleight of Hand.
Arrest provides an alternative entrance
A character transported to Heapside Prison after accepting arrest is not trapped without options. The cell has multiple escape possibilities, including a noticed hole, a breakable wall and a route through the neighbouring cell. The manhole and pit latrine then connect the prison with the Lower City Sewers.
---
Basilisk Gate Barracks presents Baldur’s Gate as a city under emergency rule. The soldiers are not merely guarding a gate. They are collecting animals, processing complaints, holding prisoners, carrying out executions and relying on Steel Watch constructs to enforce order.
The documents found in the prison connect local policing to wider political developments. Counsellor Florrick’s death sentence shows how the authorities have been compromised, while the Crumbling File hints at hidden activity linked to the Emperor. The office scene involving Blaze Portyr and Lora adds a more personal example of that corruption: even the commander’s judgement is being interfered with.
The location also contrasts public spectacle with private administration. The gallows and pillories are designed to be seen by the city, while the prison office, armoury and confiscated supplies are concealed below the barracks. Together, they make the complex one of the clearest small-scale portraits of Baldur’s Gate’s political deterioration.

Before looting the prison
---
Is Basilisk Gate Barracks part of the Lower City?
Yes. It is an Act Three location within the Lower City, immediately north of the Basilisk Gate entrance.
Is the gallows a separate location?
No. The execution ground is the open forecourt associated with the barracks. It is best treated as part of the same location rather than as an independent Lower City district.
Where is Heapside Prison?
It is in the basement of Basilisk Gate Barracks, reached through the northern door in the barracks office. A party member arrested in the Lower City is also transported there.
Can Skittle be recruited?
No recruitment is established here. Skittle is a rat trader who can be understood through Speak with Animals.
Is there a normal shop in the barracks?
No conventional shop is confirmed. Skittle is a trader, but only through Speak with Animals. The other containers and the armoury are loot sources, not general services.
Does reading Counsellor Florrick’s sentence begin her rescue quest?
No. The prison document provides context but does not advance Free Counsellor Florrick. Reading the Execution Notice at the gallows is the relevant trigger if the quest has not started.
Is Wyrm’s Rock Prison part of Basilisk Gate Barracks?
No. Wyrm’s Rock Prison is a separate facility in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. Heapside Prison is the prison beneath Basilisk Gate Barracks.
Can the prison be reached without being arrested?
Yes. Enter the barracks office and use the northern door. Arrest is simply an alternative progression state that places a character in one of the cells.
---
This guide treats the Basilisk Gate Barracks location page as the primary boundary source. It includes the training grounds, office, kitchen, dormitory, Heapside Prison, execution grounds and the nearby bath-house because these are the areas explicitly described as part of, below or directly associated with the complex.
The character category contains 40 pages and includes minor or background figures whose exact on-screen placement may depend on progression, encounter state or how the category is maintained. They have been preserved in the directory rather than omitted, but the guide does not claim that every category entry is a permanent resident of the barracks itself.
The guide does not assign named services to decorative buildings or background NPCs where the available evidence only establishes their presence. In particular, the nearby bath-house is treated as mission-only access, and the livestock cages, pillories and news hawker are treated as scenery or vignettes rather than shops.
