About this guide

Base game, Act Three location guide Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Lower City, Oliver Tefoco’s family, hidden storage areas, pickpocketable items and nearby story locations.

Overview

Beehive General Goods, also referred to as Beehive Goods and Wares or simply the Bee Hive, is a small but unusually rich shop in the Steeps district of Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. It is run by Oliver Tefoco, who sells general supplies, alchemical ingredients and potions. The shop is more than a single retail room: the location includes the shop floor, a locked basement, the Tefoco family’s upper-floor home and the surrounding street scene.

The building is useful for three reasons. First, it is one of the Lower City’s practical consumable vendors, with Camp Supplies, healing potions, alchemical materials and other general goods. Secondly, the building contains several hidden or locked caches, including a safe concealed behind a painting and a chest behind a breakable wall. Finally, it sits at a useful junction between Old Garlow’s Place, Rainforest’s Home, Flymm’s Cobblers, Crimson Draughts and the route towards the Counting House.

Location boundaries and hierarchy

Beehive General Goods occupies the first floor of a three-storey building. The shop itself is the ground-floor retail area. Above it are the second and third floors of the Tefoco family home, while a separate basement lies beneath the shop.

The building’s immediate exterior is also relevant. The back of the shop connects into a small alley and passage network involving Rainforest’s Home, Old Garlow’s Place and the direction of the Counting House. A narrow bridge on the opposite side of the street leads towards the upper floors, with Lora’s Home and Crimson Draughts nearby. These neighbouring places are not part of Beehive General Goods itself, but they are important when planning a route through this part of the Lower City.

The following spaces belong to the Beehive General Goods location or its directly associated building:

These locations are nearby but should not be merged into Beehive General Goods:

The separation matters because these neighbouring buildings have their own characters, loot, quests and interiors.

Finding the shop

Beehive General Goods is in the southern-central part of the Lower City, within the Steeps district. Its street frontage lies near Flymm’s Cobblers, while Old Garlow’s Place is south of it and Lora’s Home lies across the nearby upper route. Crimson Draughts is close to the bridge leading to the Tefoco residence.

The building has both a front entrance and a rear door, so it is possible to treat it as a short stop while travelling between nearby Lower City locations rather than making a separate expedition.

A practical route is

  1. 01
Enter the Lower City and move towards the Steeps district.
  2. 02
Look for the general-store frontage and Oliver Tefoco inside.
  3. 03
Before leaving, inspect the counter, the staircase and the locked hatch.
  4. 04
Use the rear exit to connect with the alley network.
  5. 05
If exploring the upper floors, approach the bridge from the direction of Lora’s Home or Crimson Draughts.

  3. 03
Search the shop floor, including the locked gilded chest on the counter.
  4. 04
Inspect the locked hatch beneath the stairs.
  5. 05
Enter the upper floors either by opening the locked interior door or by using the bridge entrance.
  6. 06
Search the third floor for the hatch key and basement chest key.
  7. 07
Search the locked wooden chest for Thieves’ Tools and family correspondence.
  8. 08
    Return to the basement.
  9. 09
Use the basement chest key on the safe concealed behind the Landscape painting.
  10. 10
Check the breakable wall and disarm or avoid the Blast Mine before opening the chest behind it.
  11. 11
Leave through the rear door and continue towards Old Garlow’s Place, Flymm’s Cobblers or the Counting House route.

Oliver Tefoco and the business

Oliver Tefoco is the owner and merchant. He presents Beehive General Goods as a practical neighbourhood shop selling food, drink, potions and everyday provisions. The shop’s stock is particularly useful for parties preparing for difficult Lower City encounters, as it can supply Camp Supplies, healing items and alchemical materials.

Oliver’s trader category is recorded as general and alchemy. The exact inventory can vary according to character level, trader restocks and the game’s normal merchant inventory rules, so individual items should not be treated as permanently guaranteed unless specifically identified as fixed loot.

The Potion of Supreme Healing is a late-game healing item that restores 10d4 + 20 hit points and removes Burning. Oliver is one of the merchants who may offer it, although merchant stock is not necessarily identical in every playthrough or at every stage of progression.

The counter chest

A locked gilded chest sits on the shop counter. It is red-outlined and requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick. The chest contains gold and several rare potions.

Because it is in a public shop, opening it may be treated as theft. Consider moving out of sight, using turn-based mode to control timing or creating a distraction before attempting the lock. The chest is separate from Oliver’s merchant inventory and should be searched even if you have already traded with him.

Pickpocketing Oliver

Oliver can be pickpocketed for his sellable goods. He may also carry the Counting House Safe No. 7 Key, making him a useful target for characters who want to obtain the key without progressing through the Counting House’s normal security structure.

This is optional and carries the usual risks of pickpocketing:

The key is a distinct item from the shop’s normal retail stock.

---

The upper floors are the Tefoco family residence. The location may be labelled Tefoco’s Home when entered through the upstairs route, but it belongs to the same building and should be treated as the residential section of Beehive General Goods rather than a separate neighbourhood.

The family’s absence is part of the area’s environmental storytelling. Letters and books explain that Oliver and his spouse, Kroyce Tefoco, have nine children and a granddaughter. Their children have dispersed: one daughter is married and lives elsewhere, three sons joined the Flaming Fist, two became guards with a trading caravan and Kroyce fled with the younger children to Beregost because of the Absolute threat.

Reaching the upper floors

The upstairs entrance is locked and red-outlined. You can enter by:

The bridge route is useful if you want to avoid entering through the shop door, although the residential door itself remains locked.

Third-floor discoveries

The third floor contains the most useful practical discoveries:

The basement keys are particularly important because they allow a more controlled exploration of the lower storage area. You can also force your way through the basement lock with the appropriate check, but taking the keys provides additional context and avoids relying entirely on lockpicking.

Second-floor discoveries

The second floor has less valuable loot than the third floor. Its main purpose is atmosphere and family history. A letter from Oliver’s sons discusses their work as caravan guards.

---

The basement is accessed through a locked hatch beneath the stairs on the shop floor. The hatch is red-outlined and can be opened with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check, or by using the appropriate key found upstairs.

This is a storage basement rather than a combat dungeon. It contains shelves, sacks, containers and supplies associated with the shop’s trade.

Basement contents

The potion and ingredient contents should be treated as exploration loot rather than a fixed merchant catalogue. Random or container-based items may vary by game state and should not be confused with Oliver’s trade inventory.

The hidden safe

The safe is concealed behind the Landscape painting. It can be opened with Tefoco’s Basement Chest Key, found on the third floor.

The wedding ring is a small piece of domestic detail, while Hold Monster is the more mechanically significant reward. The scroll can be especially useful for characters who want a powerful control option without spending a prepared spell slot or learning the spell permanently.

The breakable wall and trapped chest

A Sturdy wall in the basement can be broken. Behind it is an unlocked wooden chest, but a Blast Mine is placed in front of the cache.

The chest itself is not the dangerous part. The Blast Mine is the main hazard, and rushing towards the hidden cache can trigger it.

Recommended procedure

  1. 01
Enter the basement with a character capable of Perception and trap disarming.
  2. 02
Search around the wall and chest before moving directly towards the loot.
  3. 03
Enter turn-based mode if you need precise positioning.
  4. 04
Disarm the Blast Mine if possible.
  5. 05
Break the wall or attack it with a suitable weapon or spell.
  6. 06
Open the chest once the area is safe.

Residents

The only active resident and merchant associated with the building is:

The rest of the Tefoco family is described through letters and household objects, but they are not present in the city or building during the relevant Act Three state described by the location.

Exterior NPCs

The surrounding street contains several named characters whose conversations add context but do not form a major quest hub.

Cressida Flint

Cressida Flint walks between Beehive General Goods and Flymm’s Cobblers. She openly praises Enver Gortash and his style of government, apparently echoing material from the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette.

She is best understood as a moving Lower City citizen and political voice rather than an employee of Beehive General Goods.

Pharnilla and Dellys

Under the bridge leading from the Tefoco residence towards Crimson Draughts, Pharnilla and Dellys argue about their rights to take a break. Their exchange is a small urban vignette and reflects the busy, crowded life of the Lower City.

They are news hawkers, not shop workers.

Pompton Norvath and Delyarna

Behind the store, Pompton Norvath and Delyarna discuss the strange company occupying the abandoned “Albright place”. Their conversation provides local rumour and helps make the surrounding district feel inhabited.

Named NPC directory

These exterior characters are not all merchants, quest givers or members of a single faction. Their inclusion in the location directory reflects their named presence around the shop.

---

Beehive General Goods has no dedicated faction quest, boss encounter or permanent combat sequence. Its security is primarily social and mechanical:

The Flaming Fist is relevant to the family background because several of Oliver’s sons joined it, but the shop itself is not a Flaming Fist facility. Similarly, Cressida’s support for Gortash does not make the store a formal Gortash-controlled location.

Fixed or specifically associated items

The shop page specifically identifies the Counting House key, Elixirs of Cloud Giant Strength and Hill Giant Strength among the notable loot associated with Beehive General Goods. Merchant inventories and random container contents should be checked separately, since not every item is guaranteed to appear in exactly the same way in every game.

Reading material

The building contains several pieces of family and business correspondence. Named or identifiable documents associated with the location include:

Final Delivery is a notice to Oliver explaining that food and dry-goods shipments have been suspended until supplies can enter the city freely again. Its wording reinforces the shop’s role as a working provisioner affected by the wider crisis.

---

Beehive General Goods is not itself the centre of a named quest. Its activities are instead tied to general Act Three exploration:

The shop may appear in walkthrough routes connected to the Counting House, because Oliver can carry Safe No. 7’s key. This is an optional acquisition method rather than a mandatory quest step.

The shop is also near Crimson Draughts, where Araj Oblodra may be encountered if she survived earlier events and the relevant Act Two circumstances occurred. Crimson Draughts is not part of Beehive General Goods, but the bridge between the two locations makes them natural consecutive stops.

---

Act and access

Beehive General Goods is an Act Three Lower City location. It is not available during the earlier acts in its Baldur’s Gate form.

Merchant stock

Oliver’s stock can change according to character level, merchant refreshes and the game’s normal trader mechanics. Treat high-value potions and elixirs as stock that should be checked rather than as permanently guaranteed rewards. Potion of Supreme Healing is generally associated with higher-level merchant inventories, and Oliver is one of its possible sellers.

Araj Oblodra and Crimson Draughts

Araj’s presence in nearby Crimson Draughts depends on earlier story outcomes. This affects the neighbouring shop, not Beehive General Goods itself. Do not treat Araj’s availability as a requirement for entering or trading at Beehive General Goods.

Potentially missable actions

The following can be missed through ordinary progression or player choice:

The available evidence does not establish a single universal quest trigger that removes the shop or permanently guarantees every listed item. Save before theft attempts and before major Act Three progression if you want to preserve access to all optional exploration.

---

Beehive General Goods is a compact example of Baldur’s Gate’s civilian perspective during the crisis. The shop is not a fortress, temple or villainous headquarters. It is an ordinary family business under pressure:

The contrast between the shop’s ordinary purpose and the dangerous city outside gives the building much of its character. Its letters also connect the local business to larger Baldur’s Gate institutions, including the Counting House, the Flaming Fist and the trading caravans.

The name is also linked to the alternate form Beehive Goods and Wares, while in-game letters use The Bee Hive. These are aliases for the same establishment, not separate shops or different game continuities.

---

---

Is Beehive General Goods a separate region?

No. It is a named location inside the Steeps district of the Lower City in Act Three. Its upper floors may be labelled Tefoco’s Home, but they are part of the same building complex.

Who runs the shop?

Oliver Tefoco runs the shop and is its functioning merchant.

What does Oliver sell?

His trade category is general goods and alchemy. Expect Camp Supplies, potions, ingredients and other consumables, with higher-level stock depending on game progression and merchant refreshes.

How do I enter the basement?

Use the locked hatch beneath the stairs. It requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check unless you use Tefoco’s Hatch Key from the third floor.

Where is the Hold Monster scroll?

It is in the safe hidden behind the Landscape painting in the basement. The safe can be opened with Tefoco’s Basement Chest Key from the third floor.

Where is Counting House Safe No. 7’s key?

Oliver Tefoco can be pickpocketed for it. This is optional and should be attempted with suitable stealth and Sleight of Hand preparation.

Is Crimson Draughts part of Beehive General Goods?

No. It is a neighbouring location connected by the nearby bridge and street route. Araj Oblodra’s availability there depends on earlier story outcomes.

Is there a boss or mandatory fight here?

No intrinsic boss encounter or mandatory combat sequence is associated with Beehive General Goods. The main dangers are theft consequences, locked containers and the Blast Mine in the basement.
