About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Three story events, the Murder Tribunal, Orin the Red, the Dark Urge, companion abductions and the end of the quest Get Orin’s Netherstone.

Overview

The Bhaal Temple is the innermost sanctuary of the Cult of Bhaal in Baldur’s Gate 3. It lies beneath the Lower City, beyond the sewers and the Undercity Ruins, and serves as the location for the confrontation with Orin the Red, the rescue of her kidnapped hostage and a major turning point in the Dark Urge origin story. It is not the same place as the Murder Tribunal, although the Tribunal normally provides the item needed to enter it.

The temple is a compact but story-heavy area. Its apparent simplicity is deceptive: the entrance is trapped, the temple door has special access rules, the central altar may hold an abducted companion or Yenna, and a hidden route can let you reach Orin’s private chambers before beginning the main confrontation.

The approach from the Undercity Ruins

After entering the Undercity Ruins, the route towards the temple crosses the Manslaughter Chasm. The chasm contains broken buildings, cliffs and a narrow crossing. The Bhaalist ambush led by Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev takes place before the temple itself.

The passage then descends through the Stairway. Several Whispering Statues line the route and recite parts of Alaundo’s Bhaalspawn prophecy. A fork leads towards the Morphic Pool Docks, while the descending route continues towards the temple bridge.

The bridge is a significant hazard. It is fitted with Marble Plates and Sanguine Vents. Triggered vents emit Unstable Blood, and nearby candles can ignite the surface. The traps use a DC 15 Perception check to detect. The temple approach also becomes a no-camp, no-fast-travel zone, so prepare before crossing it.

Temple entrance

The entrance is sealed by large Solid Doors. The doors remain inaccessible until Ghislev has been defeated, and then normally require the Amulet of Bhaal.

A character can inspect the inscriptions with a DC 18 Religion check, but this does not replace the amulet. A character who has become an Unholy Assassin can pray at the door, but the amulet is still required unless the character is the Dark Urge.

Main temple chamber

Inside, the temple consists of three principal visual levels:

Three broad stairways descend from the outer perch towards the altar, although one is destroyed. The huge symbol of Bhaal carved into the cavern wall becomes important during the confrontation with Orin.

Main temple chamber: steps

  1. 01
The outer perch, an upper forked walkway with alcoves and bodies on display.
  2. 02
The lower central platform, containing the Altar of Bhaal.
  3. 03
The rear approach and Chosen’s Room, beneath the large relief of Bhaal.

Orin’s Chosen’s Room

The Chosen’s Room is Orin’s private chamber. The direct route passes through the altar area, but a hidden passage on the northern side of the outer perch can reach it first. Exploring the chamber before approaching Orin can provide additional context and dialogue options.

The room contains Orin’s bed, a locked wooden chest, wardrobes and documents concerning Orin, the Dark Urge and competing ideas about the proper worship of Bhaal. The chest is opened with Orin’s Chest Key and contains a skull plus two random coatings ranging from Uncommon to Very Rare quality. The wardrobes contain common jewellery.

Standard route

The amulet is normally obtained through the Murder Tribunal. The party can either complete the Tribunal’s ceremony and become an Unholy Assassin of Bhaal, or kill Sarevok and loot the amulet from him.

For most characters, the intended route is

  1. 01
    Enter the Lower City Sewers.
  2. 02
Travel north into the Undercity Ruins.
  3. 03
Pass through the ruins and confront Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev.
  4. 04
Descend the Stairway and cross the trapped bridge.
  5. 05
Use the Amulet of Bhaal at the temple doors.

Dark Urge route

The Dark Urge has a special access condition. Sceleritas Fel can open the temple door, so the Dark Urge does not require the Amulet of Bhaal. This is one of the location’s important origin-specific changes.

Alternative access to the Undercity Ruins

The magical stone door between the Lower City Sewers and the Undercity Ruins has several possible solutions, including:

These are access methods for the Undercity Ruins, not replacements for every later requirement at the temple doors. Once inside the ruins, Ghislev still blocks the route until the encounter is resolved.

Story characters

The principal story characters associated with the temple are:

Orin is the current head of the Cult of Bhaal and the temple’s central antagonist. The temple also reflects the earlier relationship between Orin and the Dark Urge, making it especially significant for that origin.

Story characters

Abducted companions and camp followers

Before reaching the temple, Orin abducts one eligible person and places them on the central altar. Depending on the playthrough, the victim can be:

The exact victim depends on the party’s available companions, camp state and previous events. The victim is not simply a permanent decorative resident. They are part of the hostage sequence and may be rescued, killed or placed at risk depending on the dialogue and combat choices.

Abducted companions and camp followers

Cult of Bhaal followers

Orin’s immediate retinue includes one Death’s Head of Bhaal, one Invoker of Bhaal and six Reapers of Bhaal.

Orin’s displayed victims

Up to two bodies may appear in the outer-perch alcoves, depending on which characters Orin impersonated during events in Rivington. The possible entries are:

These are playthrough-dependent displays, not a fixed set that appears in every game.

---

Orin the Red

Orin is the temple’s main boss and the target of Get Orin’s Netherstone. The confrontation begins around the central altar and is shaped by the hostage situation, the cultists’ ritual and Orin’s relationship with Bhaal.

The large Bhaal relief behind the altar has a special role during the fight. The encounter is not just a standard battle against one enemy, because Orin’s cultists and the ritual context affect the scene. The achievement First Blood is awarded for killing Orin while her cultists are performing their ritual chant.

Protecting the hostage

When the party approaches the altar, several dialogue options can help preserve the abducted victim. The initial conversation with Orin can be handled with a DC 25 Deception, Intimidation or Persuasion check. Because this is a high-difficulty check, consider using the character with the strongest relevant ability and suitable bonuses.

A failed attempt does not necessarily mean the fight is unwinnable, but the hostage’s safety becomes much more precarious. Save before approaching the altar if rescuing the victim is important to your playthrough.

Practical combat advice

Main locations within the temple

The Lending Library is a stack of scrolls with a plaque. It contains one item, The Ecstasy of Murder, and prompts a Narrator comment when examined. Another alcove contains the skeleton of Manip Antyra Thorpe, whom the cult executed for interfering with its activities in the city.

Nearby landmarks outside the temple

These belong to the surrounding Undercity Ruins rather than the temple proper:

The body of Wilting Alex contains Dribbles’ head, an important item for Find Dribbles the Clown. This is in the approach area, not inside the temple chamber itself.

Temple loot

The temple page identifies the chest’s contents and the room’s documents, but random coating results should not be treated as a fixed inventory list.

Approach-area loot

The surrounding Undercity Ruins contain additional items that are easy to mistake for temple loot:

The Bonespike Gloves are missable in a practical sense because Luke’s corpse can disappear with the other Bhaalists after Ghislev is defeated. If you want them, loot Luke before completing the encounter.

Get Orin’s Netherstone

This is the temple’s principal quest. The route normally involves:

The quest can be approached alongside the Gortash storyline, and the order in which the two Chosen are confronted affects some dialogue and progression states.

Get Orin’s Netherstone: steps

  1. 01
Investigating the murders in the Lower City.
  2. 02
Locating the Murder Tribunal beneath Candulhallow’s Tombstones.
  3. 03
Providing evidence of murder, usually a severed hand.
  4. 04
Dealing with Sarevok and the Tribunal.
  5. 05
Acquiring the Amulet of Bhaal or using the Dark Urge’s special entry.
  6. 06
    Reaching the temple.
  7. 07
    Confronting Orin.
  8. 08
    Claiming Orin’s Netherstone.

Impress the Murder Tribunal

The Tribunal is the usual gateway to the temple. A party member is judged by Sarevok and the Bhaalspawn Echoes. Passing the trial and accepting the final murder can grant the title Unholy Assassin of Bhaal and the Amulet of Bhaal. Refusing the killing or failing the trial leads to combat instead.

Killing Sarevok also provides another route to the amulet, although it changes the Tribunal sequence and its consequences. The amulet cannot simply be pickpocketed from him. It must be received as a reward or taken from his defeated body.

Rescue Orin’s Victim

The victim is chained to the altar in the centre of the temple. The rescue is integrated into the Orin confrontation rather than being a separate exploration puzzle. Dialogue choices, ability checks and combat decisions determine whether the victim survives.

Because the hostage is selected dynamically, the exact emotional and party consequences vary between playthroughs. Check your camp and companion situation before entering the temple if the identity of the victim matters to you.

The Urge

For the Dark Urge, the temple is a major personal-story location. Orin’s rise is directly connected to her betrayal of the previous Chosen of Bhaal, and the encounter provides a culmination of the conflict between the two characters. The Dark Urge’s route, dialogue and entry method differ from those of other origins.

---

---

---

The temple continues the long-running Baldur’s Gate storyline surrounding Bhaal, the God of Murder, and the Bhaalspawn. In the original Baldur’s Gate, the protagonist ultimately confronts Sarevok in a temple dedicated to Bhaal. Baldur’s Gate 3 reuses Sarevok, the Bhaalist cult and the imagery of the Murder Tribunal while placing Orin and the Dark Urge at the centre of the new conflict.

The Undercity Ruins also display references to earlier Bhaalspawn history, including a murder scene depicting Amelyssan and members of “The Five”. This is outside the temple’s strict boundary but forms part of the same visual and historical passage into Bhaal’s sanctum.

The Urge: steps

  1. 01
Prepare in the Lower City. Stock healing, remove unnecessary party members if you need a specific companion at risk, and make a manual save.
  2. 02
Enter the Undercity Ruins. Search the entrance area, including the trader Bareki and nearby containers.
  3. 03
Decide whether to pursue side loot first. If you want Bonespike Gloves, deal with Strangler Luke before finishing Ghislev.
  4. 04
Handle the Ghislev encounter. Search the battlefield before moving on.
  5. 05
Explore the stairway and murder scene. Collect Dribbles’ head from Wilting Alex if you are completing the clown quest.
  6. 06
Disarm the temple bridge. Use Perception and avoid lighting the candles or stepping on the plates.
  7. 07
Open the temple door. Use the Amulet of Bhaal, or let Sceleritas Fel open it for the Dark Urge.
  8. 08
Explore the outer perch. Inspect the Lending Library, alcoves and displayed bodies.
  9. 09
Use the northern hidden passage if desired. This allows access to Orin’s chambers before the altar sequence.
  10. 10
Approach the altar with the right party member selected. Prepare for the high-difficulty dialogue checks.
  11. 11
Resolve the hostage scene and defeat Orin.
  12. 12
Search the area afterwards. Collect the Netherstone and any room loot you left behind.

Is the Murder Tribunal inside Bhaal Temple?

No. The Murder Tribunal is a separate location beneath Candulhallow’s Tombstones. It normally provides the Amulet of Bhaal used to open the temple.

Can the Dark Urge enter without the Amulet of Bhaal?

Yes. Sceleritas Fel opens the temple door for the Dark Urge. Other characters normally require the amulet.

Can I camp inside the temple?

No. The approach bridge and temple area are part of a zone where camping and fast travel are unavailable. Prepare before crossing the bridge.

Can I reach Orin’s room before fighting her?

Yes. A hidden passage on the northern side of the outer perch leads to the Chosen’s Room without requiring the party to approach the altar first.

Is Dribbles’ head inside the temple?

No. It is in the surrounding Undercity Ruins, carried by Wilting Alex at a murder scene near the Whispering Statues.

What happens if I refuse to become an Unholy Assassin?

At the Murder Tribunal, refusing the final killing leads to combat with Sarevok and the Tribunal. You can still obtain the Amulet of Bhaal by defeating Sarevok and looting it, although the sequence and consequences differ.

What is fixed and what changes between playthroughs?

The temple’s architecture, altar, Bhaal relief, Chosen’s Room and Orin encounter are fixed. The abducted victim, displayed corpses and some dialogue depend on previous choices, available companions and the selected origin. Random coatings in Orin’s chest are also not fixed.
