The Cloister of Sombre Embrace is a hidden Sharran temple beneath the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The cloister can only be reached through the Mapping Room of the House of Grief, unless the party starts violence above ground and exposes the mechanism that way.
  • Shadowheart’s presence and Act Two allegiance substantially change the dialogue, access conditions and outcome of the encounter with Viconia DeVir.
  • The main complex contains the main chamber, Chamber of Loss, dormitories, library, armoury and the hidden Night Orchid Cave.
  • Viconia DeVir is the principal hostile encounter Depending on Shadowheart’s choices, some Sharrans may defect and fight alongside the party.
  • The location contains an intact Mirror of Loss, one of the most valuable permanent-stat opportunities in the game.
  • The cloister’s prisoners, records and architecture reveal that Shar’s organisation is not merely a temple. It is also a covert intelligence network, indoctrination centre and interrogation facility.

About this guide

Base game, Act Three location guide Major spoilers for Shadowheart’s personal quest, the House of Grief and several Act Three outcomes

Overview

The Cloister of Sombre Embrace is a hidden Sharran temple beneath the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. It is not the whole House of Grief and should not be treated as a separate district of the city: the House of Grief is the public-facing building above, while the cloister is the concealed temple, training complex, prison and living quarters below it. The location is the decisive Act Three setting for Shadowheart’s Daughter of Darkness questline, and its outcome can alter Shadowheart’s future, the leadership of the Sharran church in Baldur’s Gate and the allies available during the final battle.

Scope and boundaries

The Cloister of Sombre Embrace is the underground area beneath the House of Grief. The House of Grief itself, its garden, bridge and named surface NPCs are neighbouring or parent-location content rather than subareas of the cloister. They are included here only where they directly control access to the temple or affect its progression.

The area should also be kept separate from the Gauntlet of Shar in Act Two. Both locations belong to Shar’s religious tradition, but they are different places in different acts. The Gauntlet’s Mirror of Loss is cracked and unusable, while the cloister’s mirror is functional.

---

Overview

The cloister is Viconia DeVir’s Baldur’s Gate base of operations. The House of Grief presents itself as a charitable establishment that helps people cope with bereavement, but this public service functions as cover for the Sharran organisation beneath it. The underground complex houses initiates, stores information, trains followers and imprisons people whose memories or connections are considered valuable.

The temple is built into a large subterranean cavern. After the initial approach and training rooms, the player reaches a broad central area dominated by the main chamber and the sunken Chamber of Loss. A raised gallery leads to several adjoining rooms. The dormitories lie to the north, the library to the south and the armoury to the south-east. The layout is compact in terms of travel distance, but it is dense with quest triggers, conditional access and easily missed objects.

The area is not normally a dungeon full of unrelated encounters. Most of its significance comes from the way its rooms support the Sharran story:

---

Normal route through the House of Grief

The standard route begins at the House of Grief in the Lower City. The building stands beyond a bridge in the Steeps, separated from nearby city locations by a stream. Inside, the party encounters the House’s staff and can be offered the Mapping of the Heart ritual.

The secret entrance to the cloister is in the Mapping Room, behind a movable brick wall. A passive DC 20 Investigation check reveals the button that opens the passage. If Shadowheart is present, the story can expose the route through dialogue and the concealed area can be opened without relying on the same investigation sequence.

The Mapping of the Heart is optional. Only one party member can undergo the ordinary version of the ritual during a playthrough. Its result affects Viconia’s later combat abilities, giving her powers aimed at the character’s mapped heartform. The party can avoid this complication by refusing the ritual, finding the hidden button or triggering sufficient hostility among the Sharrans above ground.

Recommended access sequence

  1. 01
Enter the House of Grief with Shadowheart in the active party if possible.
  2. 02
Speak to the staff and decide whether to complete or bypass the Mapping of the Heart.
  3. 03
If completing it, choose the character who is least vulnerable to the resulting heartform abilities.
  4. 04
Search the Mapping Room for the concealed button.
  5. 05
Enter the passage and allow the party to reach the main chamber before making irreversible decisions.
  6. 06
Make a separate save before approaching Viconia.

If the party arrives without Shadowheart

The cloister does not necessarily attack immediately if the party enters without Shadowheart, provided the House of Grief staff have not already been killed. Viconia instead demands that the party bring Shadowheart to her, beginning the Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia branch.

This is useful for players who want to inspect parts of the area before committing to the confrontation, although some rooms and interactions remain restricted until the relevant quest state is reached.

If the House of Grief staff are killed first

Killing Mirie and the guards above ground exposes the hidden mechanism, but it also changes the cloister’s attitude. The Sharrans below can become permanently hostile, removing some of the more controlled dialogue routes and opportunities to influence the battle. The House of Grief’s staff also react differently depending on Shadowheart’s Act Two allegiance.

---

Entrance passage and training rooms

The route from the Mapping Room descends into the concealed complex and passes through training areas before reaching the cavern. These rooms establish the cloister’s function as more than a place of worship. Followers are trained, housed and prepared for assignments outside the temple.

The passage also reinforces the cloister’s security design. A note written by Viconia states that the House of Grief is intended to act as a shield and that the main hall before the Chamber of Loss should become the final defensive position if the lower levels are breached.

Main chamber and gallery

The main chamber is the central approach to Viconia. It is arranged around a sunken interior space with a raised gallery and stairs leading to the adjoining rooms. Approaching the centre normally triggers the main conversation with Viconia.

The gallery provides access to the dormitories, library and armoury. Search the side rooms before or after the confrontation, but be aware that the final battle can change the behaviour of some residents and may make the temple harder to explore safely.

Named residents and combatants associated with the main chamber

Viconia’s documented encounter includes nineteen other Sharrans, divided between Justiciar Crusaders, sentries, Fidelians and novices. Some can defect if Shadowheart became a Dark Justiciar and the party selects the appropriate dialogue and succeeds at the required checks.

Dormitories

The dormitories are initially closed. Inside is Nocturne, a Sharran follower with a personal connection to Shadowheart. Speaking with her while Shadowheart is present completes A Familiar Face and provides one of the cloister’s more personal glimpses into Shadowheart’s lost past.

Nocturne does not participate in the Viconia battle unless attacked. The room contains Sharran furnishings and equipment, including a placement of Shar Headwear on or near the altar. The same item also has another listed placement in the armoury.

Directory: dormitories

The dormitory door can be opened through several methods depending on the run:

Chamber of Loss

The Chamber of Loss lies at the centre of the cloister. Two large discs stand in the sunken area, each holding a chained prisoner. Interacting with one of the discs begins the decisive sequence of Shadowheart’s personal quest.

The prisoners are Arnell Hallowleaf and Emmeline Hallowleaf, Shadowheart’s parents. The outcome depends on Shadowheart’s allegiance, the player’s earlier choices and the decisions made after defeating or confronting Viconia. This is the point at which the cloister’s religious language about loss becomes literal: the room is both a ritual chamber and a prison.

Directory: Chamber of Loss

A nearby prison cell contains a decapitated githyanki corpse. Investigating a pile of conspicuous rubble with a DC 15 Investigation check reveals a record describing the torture of a gith captive for information about the Mysterious Artefact. This connects the cloister directly to the Sharrans’ interest in the Astral Prism and the party’s larger campaign.

Library

The library lies to the south of the central gallery. It is not a conventional commercial library or a service area. It functions as a collection of Sharran religious material, reports and records.

The library and nearby tables contain several readable works. Some are propaganda or devotional texts, while others provide information about the cloister’s investigations and Viconia’s activities.

Verified named books and notes in the cloister

In Service of the Night is a particularly important lore document. Viconia describes rebuilding Shar’s influence in Baldur’s Gate after her earlier history in Waterdeep and explains that she was ordered to find a girl of Selûnite heritage and reshape her into a champion of darkness. The note is a direct account of the plan that eventually shaped Shadowheart’s life.

Report on Activities of Enver Gortash records Sharran surveillance of Gortash and his dealings with the Devil’s Fee, Helsik and a Bhaalist associate. Reading it can advance or reveal information relevant to Deal with the Devil.

Consolation of the Dark is a Sharran argument for Shar’s superiority over other gods, while Balduran Founds a City is ordinary historical reading rather than a unique Sharran doctrine.

Armoury

The armoury is south-east of the main chamber. It contains equipment, mannequins and the route to the hidden Night Orchid Cave.

Directory: armoury

One Shar Headwear is listed on a torso mannequin around X: -376, Y: -1677. The helmet grants +1 Constitution saving throws and requires medium armour proficiency.

The armoury also contains a breakable wooden wall. Behind it is the Night Orchid Cave and a Hastily Written Note. The note can help a character understand the purpose of the Mirror of Loss without making the initial Religion or Arcana check. A passive DC 15 Perception check can reveal the wall, although flight or another method of crossing the obstruction can bypass the need to identify it.

Night Orchid Cave

The Night Orchid Cave is a small hidden space behind the armoury wall. Its main purpose is resource gathering and environmental discovery rather than combat.

The cave contains Night Orchid, an alchemical ingredient. Three Night Orchids can be combined into a Solution of Night Orchid, which is used in the recipe for a Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation. The ingredient is also available elsewhere in the game and can be sold by Popper, so its presence here is valuable but not unique to the location.

Viconia’s role

Viconia DeVir is a drow cleric of Shar and the cloister’s Mother Superior. She founded and developed the Baldur’s Gate enclave after her earlier activities elsewhere, and she regards Shadowheart as both a valuable asset and a rival successor.

The encounter is not always a simple boss fight. Depending on the player’s dialogue choices, Shadowheart’s relationship with Shar and whether Shadowheart is present, the party may:

If Viconia is spared, she departs after saying “Aluve”. Sparing her can affect companion approval and is treated as an oathbreaking action for some Paladin paths.

Combat notes

Viconia fights as a high-level cleric with access to powerful necrotic and defensive magic. Her followers create a difficult multi-target encounter, particularly if the party allows them to spread out across the gallery and central chamber.

The Mapping of the Heart can give Viconia specialised abilities against the mapped character. If the party wants the simplest version of the fight, skip the ritual or leave the mapped character at camp. A dedicated caster and area-of-effect spells are especially useful, and the combat guide recommends dealing with Sanctuary effects and the large number of Sharran opponents rather than treating Viconia as an isolated target.

Practical preparation

---

The intact Mirror of Loss stands at the far western end of the cavern, around X: -474, Y: -1650. It is one of the cloister’s most important optional rewards.

The mirror can grant each participating party member a permanent ability-score bonus, together with a +1 Charisma benefit, in exchange for a temporary penalty and the surrender of a memory. Party members and hirelings can use it independently, making the reward potentially significant for the whole roster.

Practical preparation

  1. 01
Make a manual save before approaching Viconia.
  2. 02
Complete all conversations with Nocturne before starting combat.
  3. 03
Collect the Mirror of Loss-related note in the armoury.
  4. 04
Decide whether Shadowheart is going to confront Viconia herself.
  5. 05
Consider leaving a mapped character at camp if you want to avoid the heartform abilities.
  6. 06
Prepare area control, radiant damage, countermeasures for Sanctuary and enough healing for a prolonged fight.
  7. 07
Search the cloister after the encounter, not only Viconia’s immediate position.

Accessing the mirror’s benefits

The party must first identify the mirror’s purpose. The initial recognition can be achieved through:

Reading the Hastily Written Note in the Night Orchid Cave can bypass the initial recognition check. Each character still needs to satisfy the later requirements for receiving most bonuses, except for the Patriar’s Memory interaction.

Mirror checklist

The mirror’s exact reward path is sensitive to prior choices and the memories offered. Treat it as a permanent-stat opportunity rather than a simple loot container.

---

The cloister changes substantially according to Shadowheart’s Act Two decision.

Shadowheart rejects Shar

If Shadowheart turns away from Shar, the cloister becomes the site of her final confrontation with the organisation that shaped her. The Chamber of Loss then centres on the fate of her parents and the moral consequences of resisting Shar’s demands.

The Sharrans generally remain hostile once the confrontation begins. The House of Grief staff can also become hostile depending on the sequence in which the party handles the Mother Superior and the underground temple.

Shadowheart remains loyal to Shar

If Shadowheart remains a Dark Justiciar, she can challenge Viconia’s authority and expose what she regards as Viconia’s disobedience. With successful dialogue and ability checks, some of the cloister’s followers defect and join the party.

If Shadowheart ultimately replaces Viconia, the Sharran church can become a possible source of final-battle support. The cloister’s leadership therefore changes from Viconia to Shadowheart rather than simply disappearing after the battle.

Shadowheart absent, dead or surrendered

If Shadowheart is absent or cannot be handed over, Viconia’s dialogue and the available quest outcomes change. A sufficiently difficult Persuasion check can potentially secure Viconia’s aid for Gather Your Allies without the normal surrender route.

Surrendering Shadowheart to Viconia grants Viconia’s support in the final battle, but it has severe consequences for Shadowheart’s story. This is one of the most consequential choices in the location and should be treated as a major branch rather than a minor dialogue option.

Daughter of Darkness

The cloister is the main Act Three location for Shadowheart’s personal quest. The central activities are:

Daughter of Darkness: steps

  1. 01
    Investigate the House of Grief.
  2. 02
Discover the Sharran temple beneath it.
  3. 03
    Confront Viconia.
  4. 04
Resolve the fate of Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf.
  5. 05
Decide Shadowheart’s relationship with Shar and her parents.
  6. 06
Speak with Nocturne if the relevant branch remains available.

Investigate the House of Grief

This quest covers the public House of Grief and the hidden complex below it. Its journal branches include completing the Mapping of the Heart, investigating the back room, speaking to Viconia, surrendering Shadowheart or fighting the cult and resolving the cloister’s future.

A Familiar Face

This side quest is completed by speaking to Nocturne in the dormitories with Shadowheart present. It is easy to miss if the party starts the main confrontation before opening the dormitory area.

Gather Your Allies

The cloister can provide final-battle support through Viconia or Shadowheart, depending on the outcome. This is not an automatic reward for merely visiting the location. It depends on who controls the Sharran organisation and whether the party accepts the relevant bargain.

The cloister is a concentrated portrait of Shar’s methods in Baldur’s Gate. It combines public deception, emotional manipulation, secret policing, religious indoctrination and the deliberate destruction of memory.

The House of Grief’s charitable language is not entirely false. It does offer people a way to surrender painful memories. But the cloister reveals the darker purpose behind that practice. Loss is turned into a resource, both spiritually and politically. The Sharrans recruit vulnerable people, erase or reshape identity, interrogate captives and cultivate agents who can influence the city from beneath an apparently respectable institution.

Viconia’s note also reframes Shadowheart’s backstory. Shadowheart was not simply found and adopted by the Sharrans. Viconia describes a deliberate effort to take a child from a Selûnite heritage and remake her into Shar’s champion. The cloister is therefore the physical endpoint of a plan that began years before the player character met Shadowheart.

The dungeon’s visual structure supports this theme. The raised gallery allows the leaders and observers to look down on the Chamber of Loss, while the dormitories, library and armoury surround the ritual centre. Everyday living, religious instruction, military preparation and imprisonment all face the same central space.

Can the cloister be entered without Shadowheart?

Yes, but the route and available interactions differ. The party can reveal the hidden passage through the Mapping Room, and Viconia may demand that Shadowheart be brought to her. Shadowheart’s presence provides additional dialogue and removes some access complications.

Is the Mapping of the Heart required?

No. It can be skipped by finding the hidden mechanism or by changing the House of Grief’s hostility state. Completing it affects the later Viconia fight but is not required to reach the cloister.

Is the Night Orchid Cave part of the House of Grief?

No. It is a hidden subarea of the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, reached through the armoury.

Is the Mirror of Loss the same one found in Act Two?

No. The Gauntlet of Shar contains a cracked mirror. The cloister contains a separate, functioning Mirror of Loss capable of granting permanent bonuses.

Can Viconia become an ally?

Yes, under specific progression states. The party can surrender Shadowheart to her, or potentially negotiate support if Shadowheart is absent or unavailable. If Shadowheart takes control of the cloister, the Sharran organisation can provide support instead.

Can Viconia be spared?

Yes. After the battle, the party may be able to let her leave. This has companion approval and Paladin-oath implications.
