  • Progression and bugs can affect the encounter The High Harper has had reported progression problems, particularly if the party advances too far through Wyrm’s Crossing and the Lower City before visiting the shop.

About this guide

Base game location guide, Act Three Spoilers: This guide discusses Jaheira’s companion quest, the Harpers, Orin’s doppelgangers and the contents of the building.

Overview

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe is a combined armour and weapon shop, Harpers safehouse and doppelganger ambush site in Wyrm’s Crossing, the district between Rivington and the main city of Baldur’s Gate. It is easy to mistake the building for an ordinary merchant location, but it is one of the most important early stops for Jaheira’s personal quest, The High Harper.

The shop occupies the ground and first floors of a three-storey building, with a large cellar beneath it. Its public face belongs to Entharl Danthelon, a merchant who sells several valuable Act Three items. The hidden lower level is used by the Harpers, although the group currently sheltering there may not be what it claims to be.

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe should be treated as a distinct location within Wyrm’s Crossing. It is not the same place as Carm’s Garms, The Velveteen Elixir, Sharess’ Caress or Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, although all are nearby and can be reached from the same broad district.

Location and boundaries

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe stands in the north-western part of Wyrm’s Crossing. It is positioned across from Carm’s Garms, with Sharess’ Caress nearby and Wyrm’s Rock Fortress further north. The shop is therefore part of Wyrm’s Crossing rather than the Lower City proper.

The neighbouring premises are not subareas of Danthelon’s Dancing Axe. In particular:

This distinction matters because the route to Danthelon’s rear balcony may pass through or around neighbouring structures, but those buildings do not belong to the shop.

The location’s practical boundaries are

  1. 01
The public shop floors, including the entrance and showroom.
  2. 02
The rear room and outside balcony, which provide access to hidden storage and the cellar route.
  3. 03
The cellar and inner balcony, where the Harper-related encounter takes place.

Internal layout

Entrance and showroom

The main entrance opens onto the shop’s first floor, which functions as a showroom. Display cases contain weapons and armour, including pieces that resemble items in Entharl’s trade inventory. The cases are generally red-outlined but unlocked, so the contents can be stolen rather than purchased. However, displayed equipment is not necessarily included in the merchant’s actual stock.

Near the entrance are shelves and furniture containing supply items. One particularly notable object is a Heavy Supply Pack, a rare and distinctive find that is useful for camp supplies and worth checking for even if you are not interested in stealing from the shop.

Shop floor and counter

Entharl Danthelon normally stands behind the counter. This is the main commercial area and the safest place to begin your visit. You can trade with him before or after dealing with the cellar encounter, although dialogue and quest behaviour may vary depending on the state of The High Harper.

Rear room

The rear room contains several containers and an important route towards the balcony and cellar. The containers are red-outlined, so taking their contents is treated as theft. Closing doors and controlling line of sight is useful if you intend to loot the room.

The room can be reached with Entharl’s key in the appropriate quest state. If that route is unavailable, the balcony can also be approached from outside.

Balcony and external route

The rear balcony is reachable through the neighbouring upper area, including the vicinity of The Velveteen Elixir, or by climbing a ladder around X: -5, Y: 152. This route is useful if:

Because the back route can alter the expected quest sequence, the normal recommendation is to speak to Entharl first unless you deliberately want to bypass the dialogue.

Cellar

The cellar is the hidden Harper meeting place beneath the shop. It contains:

The cellar is the location’s most important story space and should be searched after the fight.

Access and recommended route

Normal route

The most reliable route for a first visit is:

If Jaheira is not in the party, the protagonist may still identify themselves as someone sent by Jaheira, depending on the active quest state. The available dialogue is less direct, so bringing Jaheira is the safer option.

Alternate access

You can approach the rear balcony from outside by climbing near the ladder at approximately X: -5, Y: 152. This may allow access to the back room without using Entharl’s key.

An alternate basement entry through lockpicking has been reported to affect the normal Harper encounter. The available evidence indicates that entering the cellar first by a back route may result in the expected false-Harper scene not appearing, and Entharl may no longer offer the corresponding conversation. Treat this as a possible progression variation rather than a guaranteed rule, since the behaviour has been reported as a verification issue rather than a fully documented intended route.

Residents, visitors and named characters

Residents

Entharl knows that the Harpers use the cellar. His public business gives the location a plausible reason for visitors, deliveries and stock movement. He initially attempts to act as though he knows nothing about Jaheira or the Harpers, but can relent when approached in the correct quest context.

The false Harpers are connected to Orin’s wider use of shapeshifters and surveillance in Baldur’s Gate. Their disguises are not merely a random monster encounter: they are intended to exploit the Harpers’ trust and Jaheira’s expectations.

People outside the building

These figures are listed in connection with the area outside the shop rather than as occupants of the shop itself. They should not be counted as Danthelon’s employees or cellar residents.

Merchant services

Entharl is a functioning trader. His stock includes weapons, armour, gloves, cloaks and other magic equipment. His inventory is particularly useful for martial characters and for builds that benefit from improved attack rolls, mobility or defensive penalties applied to enemies.

Notable stock

The exact value of these items depends on party composition, class features and whether you are building around weapon attacks, monk actions, Charisma or low-health damage bonuses. The items are sold by Entharl rather than obtained automatically from the quest.

Buying advice

The items can generally be traded for before or after the cellar encounter.

Notable stock

Notable stock
ItemMain benefit
BlightbringerBonuses when attacking gnomes or dwarves; critical hits can slow the target
Cloak of DisplacementGives attackers disadvantage against the wearer until the wearer takes damage
Garb of the Land and SkyImproves monk-oriented defensive and mobility actions
Gauntlets of the WarmasterMakes enemies worse at saving against manoeuvres and weapon actions; grants an attack bonus
Harmonic DuellerAllows a Performance check that adds the wearer’s Charisma modifier to melee weapon damage
Horns of the BerserkerImproves attacks against already-wounded targets and adds damage while below full health, with a drawback
Snow-Dusted Monastery GlovesAdds cold damage to unarmed attacks and grants access to Ice Knife

Items and loot directory

Display and room loot

Some display-case equipment is not part of Entharl’s trade inventory. This is an important distinction when checking whether an item can be bought, stolen or both.

Cellar loot and documents

The Kill Order is associated with Orin the Red and can be found on Hemm’s body. The Surveillance Notes are on a table in the basement, around X: -12, Y: 151. These documents help establish that the cellar occupants have been gathering information rather than acting as genuine Harper allies.

The cellar encounter

Before the fight

The cellar is a cramped but dangerous combat arena. Positioning matters because:

Spread vulnerable characters away from the oil barrel if possible. Consider placing ranged characters on higher ground or around the edges of the room, while keeping a durable front-line character near the likely approach route.

If Jaheira is present, she recognises the codeword or suspicious phrasing used by the false Harper and attempts to warn the party. If she is at camp, the protagonist may have other ways to identify the deception, including attempting to read the mind of the apparent Harper or Geraldus.

During the fight

The doppelgangers rely on shapeshifting, positioning and ranged attacks. They are not simply ordinary Harpers who happen to turn hostile. The encounter is designed around discovering that the group has been infiltrated.

The exact tactical difficulty varies with level, difficulty mode, party composition and whether the party begins the encounter surprised or prepared. The fixed elements are the cellar setting, the doppelganger theme and the associated documents and loot.

---

During the fight: Practical priorities

  1. 01
Protect characters standing near the oil barrel.
  2. 02
Remove or control ranged enemies carrying fire arrows.
  3. 03
Focus on the leader, Chelvin, if doing so does not expose weaker party members.
  4. 04
Use area control carefully, since the cellar’s tight layout can make friendly-fire incidents more likely.
  5. 05
Search bodies after combat, especially Hemm, for the Kill Order.

The High Harper

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe is a major step in The High Harper, Jaheira’s personal quest. The shop functions as a Harper safehouse, and the meeting in the cellar is supposed to connect the party with Jaheira’s network in Wyrm’s Crossing.

Jaheira is not strictly required for every dialogue branch, but she provides the clearest context and the most natural version of the scene. The quest can also be affected by the order in which the party explores Wyrm’s Crossing, Wyrm’s Rock and the Lower City.

A known concern is that The High Harper has had progression issues if the party visits the shop after moving further into Wyrm’s Crossing and the Lower City. If the quest is important to your playthrough, visiting Danthelon’s Dancing Axe soon after reaching the district is the safer approach. This is a progression precaution rather than a claim that every playthrough will fail under those conditions.

---

A recommended quest route is

  1. 01
    Recruit Jaheira in Act Two.
  2. 02
    Keep her alive.
  3. 03
Bring her to Danthelon’s Dancing Axe in Act Three.
  4. 04
    Speak to Entharl.
  5. 05
Obtain access to the hidden room and cellar.
  6. 06
    Resolve the doppelganger encounter.
  7. 07
    Loot and read the documents.
  8. 08
Continue the quest into the wider Baldur’s Gate plot.

Security and theft

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe has a low-key security arrangement rather than a formal fortified checkpoint.

The distinction between merchant stock, display items and stealable containers is important. An item visible in a case may be obtainable without buying it, but it may also be separate from the version in Entharl’s store interface.

For a thorough but orderly visit

  1. 01
Approach from the Wyrm’s Crossing street.
  2. 02
Check the surrounding landmarks so you know the shop is across from Carm’s Garms and near Sharess’ Caress.
  3. 03
    Enter through the main door.
  4. 04
Speak to Entharl with Jaheira present.
  5. 05
Inspect the merchant inventory before spending money.
  6. 06
Search the showroom, including display cases, shelves and the wicker chest.
  7. 07
Collect or record the Heavy Supply Pack.
  8. 08
Use the Rusty Key on the rear route if provided.
  9. 09
Search the back room carefully, particularly for potions, tools and toolkits.
  10. 10
Position the party before entering the cellar.
  11. 11
    Resolve the false-Harper encounter.
  12. 12
Loot the hostile shapeshifters and inspect the bodies.
  13. 13
Read the Kill Order and Surveillance Notes.
  14. 14
Open the heavy chests and collect supplies.
  15. 15
Return upstairs and trade with Entharl.
  16. 16
Continue The High Harper rather than leaving the quest unresolved.

Missable or variable content checklist

If you enter through the back route before speaking to Entharl, save first. The normal false-Harper scene may not occur in the same way, and the resulting quest state can differ.

Nearby connections

Carm’s Garms

A separate clothing and armour business across from Danthelon’s Dancing Axe. It is a neighbouring location, not part of the shop’s internal layout.

The Velveteen Elixir

A nearby potion shop. Its upper position and surrounding access routes can help the party reach Danthelon’s balcony, but the potion shop remains a separate business and location.

Sharess’ Caress

A major nearby establishment in Wyrm’s Crossing. It is south of the shop and serves as one of the clearest landmarks when navigating the district.

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress

The fortified northern section of Wyrm’s Crossing. Its guards, access rules and political significance are separate from Danthelon’s Dancing Axe.

Wyrm’s Crossing

The parent area containing Danthelon’s Dancing Axe. It should not be collapsed into the shop itself, since Wyrm’s Crossing contains multiple businesses, roads, buildings and quest locations.

---

Lore and significance

Danthelon’s Dancing Axe presents a useful contrast between public commerce and covert resistance. Entharl operates a normal-looking equipment business, but the cellar is connected to the Harpers. The shop therefore works as both a practical merchant location and a concealment space.

The false-Harper encounter also reflects one of Act Three’s recurring themes: in Baldur’s Gate, identity is unstable and familiar faces cannot always be trusted. The infiltrators exploit the Harpers’ secrecy, Jaheira’s relationships and the party’s expectation that a safehouse should be secure.

The documents found below ground connect the local incident to Orin’s wider campaign of surveillance and impersonation. The shop is consequently more than a side-room attached to a vendor. It is an early, contained example of the shapeshifter threat operating inside the city.
