About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Three content in and around Elminster’s Library, including the investigation of Ffion Goldgrind and the related Fraygo’s Flophouse sequence.

Overview

Elminster’s Library is a themed private room on the upper floor of Sharess’ Caress, the pleasure house in Wyrm’s Crossing in Baldur’s Gate 3. Despite its name, it is not a genuine branch of Elminster’s scholarly collection, nor is it connected to the Elminster Vault beneath Sorcerous Sundries. It is Ffion Goldgrind’s pleasure room, designed around the “stern librarian” fantasy that forms part of Sharess’ Caress’s themed services.

The room is easy to overlook because it is not a major dungeon or a standalone map region. Its importance comes from the clue it contains for Find the ‘Stern Librarian’ Ffion, a short investigation that leads from Sharess’ Caress to Fraygo’s Flophouse and then into the wider murder investigation in Wyrm’s Crossing.

Although the room is small, it contains several pieces of readable lore, two distinctive camp-clothing items, a guaranteed spell scroll, another random scroll, and an unusual route to the roof of Sharess’ Caress.

---

Reaching Elminster’s Library

The quest journal describes the room as being two flights up from the ground floor. The relevant upper-floor doorway is listed near coordinates X: 7, Y: 98, while Ffion’s Journal is listed near X: 5, Y: 98. These coordinates are useful for players using an external map or debugging reference, but normal navigation does not require them.

From the ground floor of Sharess’ Caress

  1. 01
Enter Sharess’ Caress in Wyrm’s Crossing.
  2. 02
Speak with Mamzell Amira, the proprietor, if you want to begin the Ffion investigation normally.
  3. 03
Ascend two flights of stairs to the upper floor.
  4. 04
Leave through the upper-floor door and enter the first room on the right.
  5. 05
Open the locked door to Elminster’s Library.

Ways to open the door

You have three practical options.

Ask Mamzell Amira

Speaking with Amira and agreeing to help find Ffion causes her to provide the Sharess’ Caress Rooms Key. This is the most direct story route and makes the room’s purpose clear before you enter.

Take a spare key from Nymph’s Grotto

A copy of the room key can be found on a shelf near the entrance to Nymph’s Grotto, another parlour in Sharess’ Caress. This allows the party to enter without first taking the quest from Amira.

Lockpick the door

The door can be opened with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check. This is a low difficulty, so a character with even modest Dexterity or basic lockpicking support should be able to enter without much difficulty.

Access summary

The room is normally locked, but opening it does not require a major faction choice, combat encounter or special quest state.

Ffion Goldgrind

Ffion Goldgrind is the room’s named resident and the employee known at Sharess’ Caress as the Stern Librarian. She is not present when the party arrives. By this stage, she has been murdered, and her body is concealed in a hidden room at Fraygo’s Flophouse.

Ffion is therefore an associated resident rather than a normal available service NPC. The room does not function as a place where the player can hire her after discovering it.

Mamzell Amira

Mamzell Amira is the proprietor of Sharess’ Caress. She is not a resident of Elminster’s Library, but she is the principal quest-giver associated with the room. She can:

The conversation can begin during normal exploration of the brothel, before the party knows where Ffion is.

Visitors and story-associated figures

No permanent named visitor or combat boss is documented as belonging to Elminster’s Library. The room is a themed workplace rather than a populated social hub. Patrons may be implied by the setting and the room’s written material, but they are not a fixed named directory of residents.

---

Starting the investigation

The associated quest is Find the ‘Stern Librarian’ Ffion. It begins by speaking with Mamzell Amira in Sharess’ Caress and asking about Ffion’s absence. Amira explains that Ffion has gone missing and asks the party to investigate her room.

You can also discover and search the room independently. The key point is that the quest’s first physical clue is inside Elminster’s Library.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Speak with Mamzell Amira. Ask about Ffion, the Stern Librarian. Accept the request to investigate if you want the cleanest quest progression.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Obtain entry. Take Amira’s key, find the copy near the entrance to Nymph’s Grotto, or lockpick the door.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Search the desk beside the bed. Pick up Ffion’s Journal. The journal indicates that something is wrong with someone connected to the residents of Fraygo’s Flophouse.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Read the journal carefully. It provides the narrative link to the next stage of the investigation.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Travel to Fraygo’s Flophouse. Search the building and locate the continuation of Ffion’s story. The quest page identifies the flophouse as the next investigation site.

Walkthrough

  1. 01
Resolve the investigation. Once Ffion’s fate has been established, return to Amira or speak to her after the relevant discovery. The quest can be treated as completed even if the party finds Ffion’s body before formally starting the investigation.

Missability and progression notes

The room itself does not appear to be governed by a major irreversible Act Three lockout in the available evidence. However, as with many Wyrm’s Crossing investigations, its relevance can be affected by broader progression through the city’s murder plot and related events.

The available sources establish the room’s quest sequence and alternative completion state, but do not provide a comprehensive list of every global Act Three event that might alter NPC availability. That broader timing interaction should therefore be treated cautiously rather than presented as fully mapped.

Quest and lore items

Ffion’s Journal

This is the room’s principal item. It is easy to find once inside, but the player must search the desk rather than simply inspect the door or bookshelves.

Rules of the Reading Room

The notice refers to the Chained Books and Special Collection, and establishes the room as a staged environment rather than a serious academic library.

Scrolls

Random scroll

Because the second scroll is random, its exact identity should not be treated as fixed across every playthrough. Search both stacks even if the guaranteed Dimension Door scroll is the only item mentioned by the quest.

Clothing

The wardrobe behind the bath area contains two camp-clothing items:

These are clothing items rather than armour and are primarily useful for camp presentation, roleplay and outfit customisation. They are not a shop inventory and are not purchased from a merchant.

Named literature directory

The following named books and written works are associated with the room’s bookcases or thematic reading material:

These titles should be understood as readable or thematic literature rather than evidence that the room provides a functional library service. The game does not turn Elminster’s Library into a book merchant, research station or spell-learning facility.

---

Functional services

Elminster’s Library has no independent merchant, vendor, healing facility, camp facility or crafting station documented as belonging to the room.

Relationship to Sharess’ Caress

The room is a service space within Sharess’ Caress, but it does not independently sell or offer the same services as the wider establishment. The room’s function is represented through its furnishings, its former resident and its written rules.

Do not infer an additional purchasable service merely from the presence of the library theme or the objects inside it.

---

A wooden ladder from the suite’s balcony leads towards the roof. This gives the room a secondary exploration value beyond the Ffion investigation. The route can help the party move around the upper structure without using every internal doorway.

This order reduces the chance of leaving behind the clothing or readable items after completing the quest objective.

---

A practical exploration order is

  1. 01
    Enter the room.
  2. 02
Take Ffion’s Journal from the desk.
  3. 03
    Search both scroll stacks.
  4. 04
Open the wardrobe behind the bath area.
  5. 05
Read the Rules of the Reading Room notice.
  6. 06
Check the bookcases for named literature.
  7. 07
    Inspect the balcony and ladder.
  8. 08
Use the roof route only after collecting the room’s fixed loot.

Enemies

No fixed enemies or named boss are associated with Elminster’s Library in the available location evidence. It is primarily an exploration and investigation room.

Security

The principal security measure is the locked door. The lock is modest, with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check. There is no documented guard encounter specifically assigned to the room.

Environmental hazards

The room contains chains, cuffs, alchemical appliances and other props, but these are part of the set dressing. The available evidence does not establish a special trap, environmental damage effect or unique combat mechanic connected to them.

Patch notes from Larian mention that unreachable objects in Elminster’s Library were fixed, confirming that some interactable objects had previously suffered accessibility problems. This is a technical correction rather than an in-world hazard.

---

Elminster’s Library is a joke built from three overlapping ideas:

The name can mislead players who know Elminster from the wider Forgotten Realms setting. The room is not his home, personal archive or magical headquarters. The real Elminster appears elsewhere in Act Three in connection with Gale’s story, while this room is simply named after the character as part of its fantasy theme.

The room also demonstrates the game’s habit of using book titles and decorative objects for humour. Several books sound like plausible Forgotten Realms or fantasy literature, while others are deliberately suggestive. They reward players who inspect bookshelves rather than treating them as background scenery.

---

Environmental hazards: steps

  1. 01
Elminster, the famous Forgotten Realms wizard.
  2. 02
The stern librarian fantasy, represented by Ffion’s role.
  3. 03
Sharess’ Caress’s themed private rooms, which transform familiar archetypes into adult roleplay settings.

Sharess’ Caress

The immediate parent location. This is where the party meets Mamzell Amira, accesses the upper floor and can find the spare room key near Nymph’s Grotto.

Wyrm’s Crossing

The broader Act Three area containing Sharess’ Caress and Fraygo’s Flophouse. The room is not part of the Lower City proper.

Fraygo’s Flophouse

The next major investigation site in the Ffion quest. Ffion’s journal leads the party there, where the investigation continues and her fate can be established.

Sorcerous Sundries

A separate Lower City location. It contains the Sorcerous Vault, including an Elminster section, but this has no direct spatial connection to Elminster’s Library. The Elminster Vault is associated with magical treasures such as the Tharchiate Codex and belongs to a different building and quest context.

Before leaving Elminster’s Library, confirm that you have:

---

Is Elminster actually living in this library?

No. Elminster’s Library is Ffion Goldgrind’s themed pleasure room in Sharess’ Caress. The name refers to the room’s librarian fantasy rather than a genuine residence or archive belonging to Elminster.

Is it the same place as the Elminster Vault?

No. The Elminster Vault is in Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City. Elminster’s Library is in Sharess’ Caress at Wyrm’s Crossing.

Can I enter without starting Ffion’s quest?

Yes. You can lockpick the door with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check or find a spare copy of the Sharess’ Caress Rooms Key near the entrance to Nymph’s Grotto.

What is the most important item in the room?

Ffion’s Journal is the most important for progression. It directs the investigation towards Fraygo’s Flophouse.

Is there a boss fight inside?

No fixed boss encounter is documented for the room. It is an investigation and loot area.

Can I get Ffion as a service NPC?

No. Ffion is absent when the party arrives, and the quest reveals her fate elsewhere.

Are the books useful for gameplay?

Most are primarily readable lore or thematic decoration. They are worth checking for flavour, but the room is not a spellbook library or a merchant inventory.
