About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Three, Figaro Pennygood’s possible murder, Dolor’s attack, associated loot and the consequences of saving or losing the boutique’s owner.

Overview

Facemaker’s Boutique is a fashion house in the Steeps district of Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. It is one of the game’s principal sources of camp clothing, hats, shoes and dyes, and it is the only confirmed location where Figaro Pennygood sells several very rare dyes. The building is also a significant stop during Investigate the Murders, because Figaro can become one of Dolor’s intended victims.

The boutique is more than a shopfront. Its two public floors and basement contain household rooms, storage, a dye laboratory, personal documents, hidden keys and a possible combat encounter involving Dolor, his doppelganger accomplices and the investigator Devella Fountainhead. Its inventory and inhabitants depend heavily on the state of the murder investigation.

Reaching the boutique

The Lower City becomes available after passing through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and leaving by the North Span. Once inside the Lower City, the Baldur’s Gate waypoint provides the most direct fast-travel reference. From there, follow the streets towards the Upper City Gate Checkpoint and The Glitter Gala. The boutique is close to the checkpoint and can be identified by its large fashion-house frontage.

Suggested route

  1. 01
Enter the Lower City through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.
  2. 02
Activate the Baldur’s Gate waypoint if it has not already been discovered.
  3. 03
Travel towards the Upper City Gate Checkpoint.
  4. 04
Look for the boutique between Elerrathin’s Home and Bloomridge Park.
  5. 05
Visit the shop before resolving the murder sequence if you want to compare Figaro’s stock and obtain his possible background inspirations.

Ground floor

The entrance opens into the main shopping room. Bobula Hanvers and Phlanders Hort work here in the ordinary shop state, with Phlanders positioned behind the counter. Phlanders carries the Facemaker Fashion Basement Key, which can be used to open the basement hatch without lockpicking.

The counter also contains a Gold Key on its lower shelves. This key opens a chest of dyes near the front window. A wicker chest behind the counter contains gold and alchemical ingredients.

The shelves around the front room display camp clothing, headwear and shoes. Some of these items can be taken directly, subject to the normal consequences of stealing from a shop. The stock is separate from Figaro’s trade inventory.

A smaller room south of the front salesroom contains:

Two double doors beside the counter lead into the rear salesroom. The back room contains more clothing displays, a raised area with barber’s chairs and large mirrors, and various cabinets and containers holding small amounts of gold and random dyes. A Barber kit can be found near the sinks in the rear room.

First floor

The first floor is reached by the stairs in the side room. The door at the top is locked and requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check unless opened by another method. Beyond it are a living room and bedroom, along with a balcony accessible from the hall.

The first floor is primarily a private residential area rather than a second shop. It contains miscellaneous loot in several chests:

The bedroom contains a wall-mounted strongbox that can be opened with Figaro’s Safe Key. A desk also holds Figaro’s Chest Key. A copy of the key is carried by Bobula Hanvers, according to the location’s notes.

Basement

The basement hatch is near the stairs. It is red-outlined and can be opened either by lockpicking with a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check or with the Facemaker Fashion Basement Key carried by Phlanders.

The Gilded Chest requires Figaro’s Chest Key, which can be found in the Stack of Scrolls at approximately X: -2343, Y: 1294. The basement also contains a trapped and locked opulent chest. It requires a DC 20 Perception check to detect the trap, a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to disarm it and a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick, although Figaro’s Chest Key opens it directly. Its contents are two random sets of camp clothing of patriarch grade.

A wooden chest requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check and contains gold and random potions. A sturdy breakable wall conceals a blast mine and another locked wooden chest. That chest contains gold, ingots and alchemical ingredients and requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to open.

Figaro Pennygood

If Figaro survives the murder sequence, or if Investigate the Murders has not been started, he acts as the boutique’s principal trader. His stock includes a broad selection of camp clothing and dyes. The location’s data identifies this trade inventory as LOW_Figaro_Trade.

Figaro’s importance is not merely cosmetic. He sells very rare dyes that are not found elsewhere through ordinary shop inventory, making the boutique one of the best places in the game for players who want to customise camp outfits. His stock can also include clothing not available from Phlanders after Figaro’s death.

Saving Figaro raises his attitude towards the player character to as much as 100. This can matter to a Guild Artisan character seeking the Valued Customer inspiration.

Phlanders Hort

Phlanders is normally an employee, but he becomes the boutique’s trader if Figaro dies during the murder encounter. His shop is smaller than Figaro’s and does not grant the same background inspirations.

Background inspirations

Buying a new piece of clothing from Figaro can award the following inspirations, depending on the purchasing character’s background:

The first three require the character to buy clothing from Figaro himself. Purchasing from Phlanders after Figaro’s death does not produce these inspirations.

Figaro’s clothing stock

The verified camp-clothing entries associated with Figaro’s trade inventory are:

Rare dyes

The precise stock can be affected by trader refreshes and game state. The list above records the named entries associated with the documented Figaro trade inventory, not a guarantee that every item will appear in one visit or in every version of the game.

---

Ordinary shop staff and proprietor

Figaro is the proprietor and inherited the business from his father, Julio Facemaker. He is the brother of Carmen Pennygood, who runs Carm’s Garms in Wyrm’s Crossing. The siblings are described as being in conflict over fashion and their respective expertise.

Murder-encounter characters

These characters are conditional and are associated with the Dolor encounter rather than the ordinary shop state:

When the encounter is active, two doppelganger-named NPCs appear in the front room and three more are in the rear room with Dolor. Devella is already paralysed when the party arrives.

Customers outside the boutique

If the party interrupts Dolor’s earlier attack at the wine festival in Highberry’s Home but allows him to escape, the following customers may wait outside the boutique:

Their presence is conditional and should not be treated as ordinary permanent residents. Kale Dorriacks can also wander into nearby areas because of glitches, but her dialogue identifies her as another frustrated customer waiting for Figaro.

Associated people outside the building

These people are not ordinary residents of the boutique. They are connected through family history or associated documents.

Investigate the Murders

The boutique’s major quest connection is Investigate the Murders, alongside Impress the Murder Tribunal and the broader objective Get Orin’s Netherstone.

When these conditions are met, Dolor moves to the boutique to target Figaro. The employees are absent, the doppelganger impostors are present, and Devella Fountainhead has been paralysed. Opening either of the double doors into the back area triggers the scene.

Saving Figaro

If Figaro survives, he remains the superior trader and retains the larger clothing and dye stock. The party can also benefit from his attitude increase and the associated inspirations.

If Figaro dies

The murder encounter is not necessarily removed by a long rest once it has reached this location. The scene waits to be triggered and resolved, although attempting to hide from the conversation does not prevent the fight from occurring.

The important condition is

  1. 01
Start Investigate the Murders and Impress the Murder Tribunal.
  2. 02
Reach the wine festival at Highberry’s Home.
  3. 03
    Interrupt Dolor’s attempted murder there.
  4. 04
Allow Dolor to survive and escape.
  5. 05
    Travel to Facemaker’s Boutique.

Saving Figaro: To save Figaro

  1. 01
Enter the boutique while the murder state is active.
  2. 02
Approach the front or rear area until the encounter dialogue begins.
  3. 03
Intervene rather than allowing the cutscene to complete without action.
  4. 04
Defeat Dolor and his doppelganger accomplices.
  5. 05
Check that Figaro survives before leaving.

Relationship with Get Orin’s Netherstone

The boutique is not a standalone quest hub for Orin’s storyline, but it is listed as a related location for Get Orin’s Netherstone because the murder investigation and Murder Tribunal route can lead into the confrontation here.

Reading the mailbox note

The boutique’s mailbox contains Seeking help, a note from an anonymous person asking Figaro for a complete makeover to escape assassins. The note is located around X: -183, Y: -33. It provides atmosphere and reinforces the boutique’s connection with disguise, identity and the serial-killer plot, but the documented item does not create a separate playable quest.

---

Fixed or named items

The literature list includes documents found in or associated with the location. Not every named book or note is necessarily a quest item, and some may be found in containers or appear under different progression states.

Basement and household loot

The trapped opulent chest in the basement is not a guaranteed named-equipment reward. Its contents are random camp-clothing sets, so it should be treated separately from Figaro’s fixed trade inventory.

Dolor’s dropped equipment

If Dolor is defeated at the boutique, his documented loot includes:

These are encounter rewards rather than normal boutique stock.

  3. 03
Check the shelves and rear room for additional clothing, hats, shoes and dyes.
  4. 04
Speak to Phlanders and note that he carries the basement key.
  5. 05
Take the Gold Key from the counter and open the dye chest near the window.
  6. 06
Search the rear room for the Barber kit and random containers.
  7. 07
Open the first-floor door with a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check.
  8. 08
Search the bedroom desk for Figaro’s Chest Key.
  9. 09
Use that key in the basement where appropriate.
  10. 10
Read Julio Facemaker’s will and inspect the Forgery Kit.
  11. 11
Approach the trapped chest carefully and deal with the trap before opening it.
  12. 12
Break or bypass the sturdy wall only after checking for the concealed blast mine.

Murder-investigation route

The boutique’s story is built around fashion as social identity. Figaro advertises the ability to create new personae, while the anonymous mailbox note asks for a makeover so complete that the client’s identity will no longer be recognisable. This makes the business thematically appropriate for a city crowded with conspiracies, doppelgangers, assassins and political manipulation.

The basement adds a more personal history. Julio Facemaker’s will and the Forgery Kit suggest unresolved family and inheritance tensions between Figaro and Carmen Pennygood. The game does not implement a full inheritance questline based on these materials, so the connection should be treated as environmental lore rather than a confirmed missing mission.

The boutique also connects indirectly to Szarr Palace. Leon Onufrio’s diary reveals that he wanted Figaro’s services to protect the identity or safety of his daughter, Victoria, but the plan never came to fruition. This is another example of the boutique’s services extending beyond ordinary clothing and into disguise, presentation and personal reinvention.

If Investigate the Murders is active

  1. 01
Visit the boutique before opening the rear double doors if you want to prepare.
  2. 02
Keep a strong party nearby and consider saving manually.
  3. 03
Trigger the scene by approaching the relevant doors.
  4. 04
Prioritise Dolor and the doppelgangers while keeping Devella alive if possible.
  5. 05
Do not assume that hiding ends the encounter. The combat can continue elsewhere in the building.
  6. 06
After the fight, confirm whether Figaro survived.
  7. 07
Revisit Figaro after the encounter to inspect his trader inventory and attitude.
  8. 08
If Figaro died, speak to Phlanders to confirm the reduced merchant state.

Where is Facemaker’s Boutique?

It is in the Lower City’s Steeps district, close to the Upper City Gate Checkpoint and next to The Glitter Gala. Its entrance is approximately at X: -181, Y: -31.

Is Facemaker’s Boutique the same place as Carm’s Garms?

No. Carm’s Garms is in Wyrm’s Crossing and is run by Carmen Pennygood, Figaro’s sister. Facemaker’s Boutique is Figaro’s Lower City establishment.

Can I buy clothing here?

Yes. Figaro sells camp clothing, shoes, hats and dyes when he is alive and available as a trader. Phlanders sells a smaller selection if Figaro dies.

Can I get the boutique’s background inspirations from Phlanders?

No. The documented inspirations require purchasing clothing from Figaro himself. Phlanders does not grant the same inspiration events after Figaro’s death.

How do I open the basement?

Use the Facemaker Fashion Basement Key carried by Phlanders Hort, or lockpick the hatch with a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check.

Can Figaro be saved?

Yes, if the party intervenes during Dolor’s attack. If the party does not stop the murder, Figaro can die and Phlanders takes over as the trader.

Does a long rest make Dolor leave?

The documented encounter state waits to be triggered and resolved even after a long rest. Hiding from the initial dialogue does not prevent the fight.

Is there a barber service?

The rear room visibly contains barber’s chairs, mirrors and a Barber kit. The verified evidence supports the presence of the barbering area and the item, but does not establish a separate player-operated barber service or a new character-customisation interface.

Is this a complete list of every decorative object in the building?

No. The directory above includes the verified named characters, items, documents, stock entries and neighbouring places recorded by the available sources. It does not claim to catalogue every unnamed customer, generic container, furnishing or decorative storefront object.
