Key takeaways
- High Hall is an endgame area, not a conventional Upper City district The game only makes this part of the Upper City available during Confront the Elder Brain.
- The Watch Citadel is the staging area Allies recruited through Gather Your Allies gather here, and Koll the Red provides a final opportunity to buy supplies.
- The courtyard battle can be bypassed or reduced The northern and southern routes, plus the Upper City Sewers, provide alternatives to charging through the main gate.
- The Upper City Sewers are a distinct child area They are not the same as the Lower City Sewers and are used as a short endgame route beneath the courtyard.
- High Hall contains several missable supplies and named encounters, including Koll’s equipment stock, the High Hall Key, several potions and scrolls, and possible Watch allies.
- The final restoration pod is unavailable on Tactician and Honour difficulty, so higher-difficulty parties should conserve spell slots, hit points and consumables before entering the hall proper.
About this guide
Major spoilers for Act Three and the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Overview
High Hall is the final Upper City location in Baldur’s Gate 3, reached during the endgame quest Confront the Elder Brain. It is not a normal, freely explorable district of Baldur’s Gate. Instead, it is a compact but multi-route endgame zone containing the ruined approach to the city’s political centre, the Watch Citadel, the High Hall Courtyard, the Upper City Sewers and the High Hall itself.
The party enters after travelling through the Morphic Pool and the Astral Plane. From there, the objective is to cross or bypass the occupied Upper City, enter the High Hall and climb towards the Netherbrain. There is no return to the Lower City, no normal camp access and no fast travel once the sequence begins.
Included areas
The Astral Plane and Morphic Pool are treated only as access points. The area Atop the Netherbrain begins after High Hall and is not included as part of the location itself.
---
High Hall becomes available only after the party commits to the endgame sequence.
Access route
Once the party is inside the High Hall sequence, ordinary city exploration ends. There is no normal connection back to the Lower City, no world-map travel and no opportunity to return to camp. Make final preparations before entering the Morphic Pool rather than assuming that the Watch Citadel will function like a regular safe hub.
---
The Watch Citadel is the first substantial area after the Astral Plane. It is a small fortified staging ground that has been overrun by the Absolute’s forces. Although the City Watch previously protected the Upper City and High Hall, the endgame invasion has left the district full of dead, fleeing or overwhelmed defenders.
This is also where the party’s recruited allies gather. Characters associated with Gather Your Allies can provide short pieces of dialogue, and the area serves as the last practical preparation point before the approach to the courtyard.
Access route: steps
- 01Complete the necessary Act Three progression until the party can travel to the Morphic Pool.
- 02Enter the Morphic Pool and continue through the Astral Plane.
- 03Follow the portal into the Upper City battlefield.
- 04Continue towards the Watch Citadel.
- 05Decide whether to use the main courtyard, a side route or the Upper City Sewers.
- 06Enter High Hall and climb towards the Netherbrain.
Koll the Red
Koll the Red acts as a final merchant. He sells supplies, including equipment and consumables suitable for the final battles.
His table contains additional magical equipment. However, taking items from the table counts as stealing. If the party steals from it, Koll disappears in a cloud of smoke, taking his remaining stock with him. Beorn Wunterbrood and nearby gathered allies can also become hostile, which prevents the party from using the associated Gather Your Allies abilities. This makes the table a poor target for casual looting, even if the items appear unattended.
Koll’s documented equipment stock
The following magical weapons and equipment are listed on Koll’s High Hall table:
These should be treated as merchant inventory, not free world loot. Buy them through the trade interface if they suit the party.
Koll’s documented equipment stock
Beorn Wunterbrood
The Flaming Fist officer Beorn Wunterbrood asks the player character to finish his speech. His presence reinforces the Watch Citadel’s role as a last stand rather than a normal settlement.
Gathered allies
The exact group present depends on the party’s earlier decisions. These characters are visitors and war-party members rather than permanent residents of High Hall. They should not be confused with the ordinary civilians and Watch personnel encountered during the approach.
The Watch Citadel is also the point at which the party can make use of the support gathered through Gather Your Allies. The consequences of stealing from Koll are particularly severe because they can turn the staging area hostile and remove access to those abilities.
Routes from the Watch Citadel
The citadel has several practical exits.
Eastern route
The eastern exit leads towards the main approach and the stairs to the courtyard. From this side, the party can also jump down into a sewage channel and break a rusted iron gate to reach the Upper City Sewers.
Northern route
The northern route passes through a bell tower and eventually rejoins the approach near the main stairway. The bell tower contains a hostile Winged Horror and a locked chest.
The chest requires a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check and contains:
Northern sewer approach
Before entering the raised gate towards the courtyard, the party can turn north and use broken masonry and platforms to reach a small room with a metal door. This is a second entrance to the Upper City Sewers. The route is patrolled by Winged Horrors.
A locked gilded chest in this section requires DC 15 Sleight of Hand and contains:
These are fixed area supplies rather than random drops, although their exact quantity may vary with ordinary game-generation conventions.
---
As the party approaches the stairs, civilians and Watch personnel flee from the fighting. A Mind Flayer attacks the Watch squad near the gate.
Two Watchmen, Watchman Matthew and Watchman Preyn, are killed by Mind Blast during the sequence. The surviving group consists of:
The party can persuade, intimidate or deceive the survivors into standing their ground. The check is DC 20. If convinced, they help in the coming courtyard fight. The Watch can also appear as a Gather Your Allies support action through the Watcher Guardians.

---
The High Hall Courtyard is the large open battlefield in front of the hall proper. The obvious route is through the large gate, but this is also the most dangerous approach.
Entering directly triggers or exposes the party to a large collection of Absolute forces. The exact battlefield is wide enough that the party can avoid engaging every enemy at once, but pushing too far into the courtyard causes more of the hostile force to take notice.
Courtyard enemies
The safest general tactic is to control the party’s exposure. Do not run the whole group into the centre immediately. Use the gate, walls and elevation to limit the number of enemies that can attack at once, or bypass the courtyard through the side routes and sewers.
Gate control room
A room above the courtyard gate contains a lever that opens and closes the main gate. This can help control the direction of the fight, although it does not remove the larger enemy presence.
The hidden civilians
At the north-eastern end of the courtyard, behind a locked door, are Civilian, Tilly and Robyn. They have hidden inside and are paralysed by fear.
The room contains a Note to the kitchen staff. A second locked door leads to a balcony with a heavy chest. The chest requires DC 15 Sleight of Hand and contains a Potion of Supreme Healing.
Civilian directory
These are emergency survivors rather than ordinary High Hall residents in a functioning city.
Courtyard documents and lore objects
Near the stairway to High Hall proper, a dead noble lies beside Legal Notes. A Memory Brain Jar is mounted on the nearby wall.
A small table north of the stairs contains:
These objects help establish the contrast between the High Hall’s former administrative role and its current occupation by the Netherbrain’s forces.
Courtyard named objects
---
The Upper City Sewers are a short, endgame-only transition area beneath the High Hall Courtyard. They are not part of the normal Lower City sewer network and cannot be explored during ordinary Act Three city roaming.
Their main function is to provide a strategic alternative to the courtyard. The sewer route does not make the finale peaceful, but it allows the party to avoid much of the largest open battle and approach High Hall from a more enclosed direction.
Sewer entrances
There are two main entrances.
Southern sewage gate
From the Watch Citadel, jump into the sewage channel south of the gathered allies. Break the rusted iron gate at approximately X: 258, Y: 33. This opens the southern sewer entrance.
Northern ruined tower
From the northern side of the approach, jump across the broken road and platforms towards the tower-like structure. Drop onto the balcony and enter the small room with the metal door at approximately X: 263, Y: 126.
This route is patrolled by Winged Horrors.
Sewer encounters
The sewer route contains a smaller but dangerous group of enemies:
Stalker Svignee is a Death Knight and the most notable named enemy in the area. The sewer route should therefore be considered a bypass of the courtyard, not a free shortcut.
High Hall Key
The High Hall Key is found on the corpse of Merug ‘Curly’ Dugald, crushed beneath debris in the Upper City Sewers.
The key opens the heavy oak door on the northern route inside High Hall proper. The door can also be lockpicked, so the key is useful but not mandatory.

---
The High Hall itself is the final internal ascent before the Netherbrain. The route is presented as a ruined, militarised version of the city’s political centre. The party must move through the lower hall, survive the bombardment and reinforcement cycle, then reach the upper door leading towards the Netherbrain stem.
Brain stem
A brain stem stands in the entrance area. Interacting with it applies Mindbroken to the party and forces repeated DC 20 Constitution saving throws to avoid being Stunned.
The Netherbrain warns the party that this is not the correct place to confront it and that they must climb higher. The interaction is therefore a dangerous environmental feature rather than a useful shortcut.
Fixed items in the entrance
A small table contains a Court Register.
The Nautiloid bombardment
Once the party crosses one of the internal doors, or is seen by the defenders, combat begins. The hall’s defenders include:
The Nautiloid marks areas on the floor before attacking. The larger glowing yellow circles indicate an incoming Nautiloid Airstrike. Smaller glowing white circles indicate locations where Mind Flayer reinforcements arrive.
The most important rule is to keep moving. Remaining in the open while waiting for every enemy to die allows the Nautiloid and recurring reinforcements to consume the party’s resources. Characters with Misty Step, Dimension Door, Fly, enhanced jumping or other mobility tools are particularly valuable.
---
High Hall divides into northern and southern climbing routes. Both eventually lead to the upper door and the Netherbrain stem.
Northern route
The northern route is blocked by a heavy oak door. It can be:
Beyond the door, the party climbs and jumps towards a gilded chest containing:
The route is useful for parties that have recovered the key from the sewers, but it is not compulsory if the party can deal with the door by another method.
Southern route
The southern route contains a Crumbling Statue blocking the ascent.
The statue can be pushed over with Shove after succeeding on a DC 20 Strength check. Once it falls, the party can walk across it and continue upwards.
This is a physical traversal obstacle rather than a permanent puzzle. A strong character, a suitable shove-enhancing ability or another route can solve it.
Upper door and end of the battle
When at least one party member passes through the upper door towards the Netherbrain stem, the High Hall combat ends. This makes speed and positioning more important than completely clearing every enemy.
Before proceeding, inspect the upper area and prepare for the final sequence. A restoration pod is available here on most difficulties, but it is not available on Tactician or Honour difficulty. Parties playing those modes should not spend all healing resources assuming that the pod will restore them.
---
Recommended route for a prepared party
- 01Prepare before entering the Morphic Pool. Use camp to restore spell slots, select defensive spells and bring characters with strong mobility.
- 02Use the Watch Citadel as a staging point. Speak to gathered allies and decide which Gather Your Allies support actions are most useful.
- 03Buy from Koll. Prioritise healing, defensive consumables and equipment that improves mobility or concentration.
- 04Do not steal from Koll’s table. Doing so removes the merchant and can make nearby allies hostile.
- 05Recruit the surviving Watchmen if desired. Speak to Watchman Gyordi’s group and pass the DC 20 Persuasion, Intimidation or Deception check.
- 06Choose the route. Use the courtyard if the party is built for a large battle, or take the northern or southern bypass if speed is more important.
- 07Consider the sewers. The southern gate is the more direct sewer entrance, while the northern route provides access through the ruined tower.
- 08Search Merug ‘Curly’ Dugald’s corpse. Take the High Hall Key if using the northern route inside the hall.
- 09Avoid unnecessary courtyard exposure. If crossing the courtyard, fight in sections rather than running into the full army.
- 10Enter High Hall and keep moving. The Nautiloid’s marked zones and recurring reinforcements punish static formations.
- 11Use the northern door or push aside the southern statue.
- 12Reach the upper door. The fight ends when a party member crosses towards the Netherbrain stem.
- 13Restore and prepare. Use the restoration pod if available on the selected difficulty, then continue to Atop the Netherbrain.

General tactics
---
The following names are documented within the High Hall location and its included endgame child areas. They are grouped by function and area to distinguish residents, visitors, allies and hostile forces.
Watch Citadel and approach
Area-associated ordinary characters
The High Hall area also contains unnamed civilians and unnamed Watch personnel. Their individual names are not given in the available location evidence.
Named hostile groups
Some of these are group labels rather than individual character names. They are included because they identify the forces occupying the location.
Businesses and services
Not established as businesses inside High Hall
There is no evidence that High Hall contains ordinary shops, inns, taverns, residences or purchasable properties during the playable endgame sequence. The Upper City is described as containing wealthy estates and businesses in the wider setting, but named Upper City businesses such as Dersu’s Vintage Tipple and Fine Fabrics are not part of the High Hall playable area.
---
Merchant stock
Fixed equipment and consumables
The table above separates fixed placements from Koll’s merchant inventory. It does not include ordinary random enemy drops or generic containers whose contents may vary.
---
High Hall is the game’s visual statement about the collapse of Baldur’s Gate’s ruling order. The Upper City is normally the protected district of the patriars, watched over by a specialised City Watch rather than the Flaming Fist used elsewhere in the city. During the finale, that hierarchy has failed. Watch bodies, fleeing civilians and broken defences fill the approach while the Absolute’s forces use the district as a battlefield.
The location’s name also has a broader Baldur’s Gate history. In earlier Baldur’s Gate continuity, the Ducal Palace was also known as the High Hall and served as a political and administrative centre. That historical usage belongs to a different game continuity and should not be treated as evidence that the BG3 High Hall is laid out identically to the earlier Ducal Palace.
The High Hall sequence also reflects cut or reduced Upper City ambitions. In the released game, the Upper City is not a freely navigable district comparable to the Lower City. Its playable High Hall section is restricted to the endgame route, while other Upper City sites are separately accessed through specific entrances or quests.

Can High Hall be visited before the finale?
No. The High Hall endgame area is accessed only after travelling through the Morphic Pool and Astral Plane for Confront the Elder Brain. The wider Upper City has separately accessible locations, but they are not interchangeable with High Hall.
Can I return to the Lower City after entering?
Not through normal travel. The sequence removes fast travel and camp access, so the party should prepare beforehand.
Do I have to fight the courtyard army?
No. The northern and southern approaches, and especially the Upper City Sewers, can bypass much of the main courtyard battle. The sewer route still contains enemies, including Stalker Svignee.
Is the High Hall Key required?
No. It opens the northern heavy oak door, but the door can also be lockpicked or broken through. The key is found on Merug ‘Curly’ Dugald in the Upper City Sewers.
Can the Watch help in the final battle?
The surviving Watchmen near the stairs can be persuaded to help if the party passes the relevant DC 20 Persuasion, Intimidation or Deception check. Watcher Guardians can also be available through Gather Your Allies.
Does High Hall have a normal shop?
No. Koll the Red is a final merchant rather than evidence of a functioning commercial district. Other Upper City businesses mentioned in the game are outside the playable High Hall area.
Is the restoration pod always available?
No. It is unavailable on Tactician and Honour difficulty. Plan the final approach as though the party may receive no full restoration before the Netherbrain encounter.
