Key takeaways
- Save Arabella immediately Her fate is decided when you first enter the Central Cavern if the scene has not already started.
- Investigate Kagha before resolving the Grove conflict if you want the Shadow Druid storyline, its evidence and its possible peaceful outcome.
- Nettie’s area is central to Find a Cure The Enclave Library is accessed through her, or with the Key of the Ancients.
- The Hidden Vault requires the Rune of the Wolf Rath normally provides it for rescuing Halsin, though it can also be stolen or looted from him.
- The Underground Passage is a back route, not a separate part of the Inner Sanctum proper. It connects the Grove’s interior to the forest and can provide a covert entrance or exit.
- Most containers are owned Looting openly can turn nearby druids hostile, particularly in the Servants’ Quarters and library.
Note
Base-game guide. This article uses “Inner Sanctum” as a practical name for the subterranean druidic complex beneath the Emerald Grove. It is not a separately labelled region on the in-game map. The game generally treats the whole area as part of Emerald Grove, while “Inner Sanctum” is used to distinguish the chambers beyond the Sacred Pool from the Grove’s other spaces.
Overview
The Inner Sanctum is the hidden, administrative and spiritual heart of the Emerald Grove in Act One of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is where Kagha conducts her most important business, where Nettie treats the wounded and investigates the party’s tadpoles, where Halsin’s research is stored, and where the Grove’s concealed vault can be opened.
The area is much larger than its central cavern. Its full scope includes the Central Cavern, Servants’ Quarters, Druids’ Chambers, Enclave Library, Hidden Vault, and the trapped rear passage leading into the Underground Passage. Treating only Kagha’s chamber as the Inner Sanctum misses several of the location’s most important quests, items and progression gates.
Nearby but separate areas
These locations connect to, or sit immediately outside, the Inner Sanctum but should not be merged into it:
The Sacred Pool is the exterior basin surrounding the Rite of Thorns. The Hollow is the main refugee and trading area. The Underground Passage is a connected route through the Grove’s defences, but it is not itself part of the Inner Sanctum.
---
Nearby but separate areas
Main route: Sacred Pool
The most direct route is through the stone door in the Sacred Pool. This brings the party into the Central Cavern and triggers the Arabella scene if it has not already happened.
This entrance is the best route for a first visit because it puts the party directly in front of Kagha, Rath and Teela. It also makes it difficult to miss the major story scene.
Alternate route: Underground Passage
The Inner Sanctum has a rear connection to the Underground Passage. Reaching it from inside requires finding the concealed stone door at the back of the Enclave Library. The door has a Perception check and requires the Key of the Ancients to open. Beyond it is a small trapped area containing poison vents before the passage continues towards the Underground Passage.
Recommended first-visit route
---
The Inner Sanctum contains important residents rather than ordinary merchants or service providers. It is not a shopping district, and no functional shop is established within the complex.
Recommended first-visit route: steps
- 01Enter through the Sacred Pool.
- 02Resolve the Arabella scene before wandering away.
- 03Speak with Kagha and Rath.
- 04Explore the Servants’ Quarters and search for evidence about Kagha.
- 05Speak with Nettie in the Druids’ Chambers.
- 06Enter the Enclave Library.
- 07Examine Halsin’s desk and the parasite specimen.
- 08Return with the Rune of the Wolf to open the Hidden Vault.
- 09Only then use the rear route into the Underground Passage.
Named residents and visitors
Kagha
Kagha is the acting leader of the Grove while Halsin is absent. She presides over Arabella’s fate in the Central Cavern and can be questioned about the Rite of Thorns, the refugees and the Grove’s future.
If the party investigates her properly, Kagha’s connection to the Shadow Druids can be exposed. She may then be persuaded to abandon them, or she may join them in a fight. If Kagha is convinced to change sides, she can help the Grove against the Shadow Druids. If she is defeated, the consequences depend on the wider Grove storyline.
Rath
Rath is one of the Grove’s senior druids and is involved in the search for Halsin. He is also connected to the Hidden Vault because he possesses the Rune of the Wolf.
Rath normally gives the rune as a reward for rescuing Halsin. It can also be obtained by pickpocketing or looting him, but doing so risks turning the Grove hostile if discovered.
Nettie
Nettie works in the Druids’ Chambers. She is treating a wounded bird when the party first encounters her. Once the party explains the tadpole problem, she leads them towards the Enclave Library and attempts to determine whether they are at risk of transforming.
Her encounter is one of the first major tests of the party’s approach to the tadpole. Depending on dialogue choices, she may attempt to poison the player character, relent, or give the party a chance to continue their search for a cure.
Marcoryl
Marcoryl patrols the Servants’ Quarters and is accompanied by Silver. The area contains owned containers, so stealing from the room while Marcoryl is nearby can provoke a confrontation. Concealment spells such as Fog Cloud or Darkness can help avoid being seen while searching.
Silver
Silver is a wolf found in the Inner Sanctum. A character using Speak with Animals can interact with him. Shadowheart may also have a reaction when the party approaches Silver, depending on the state of her personal storyline.
Arabella and Teela
Arabella is brought before Kagha after being accused of stealing the Sacred Idol. Teela, Kagha’s pet viper, guards her.
If the party does nothing, Arabella attempts to escape and Teela kills her. Saving her can grant background inspiration, including:
The Folk Hero inspiration is associated with later speaking to Arabella’s parents, while the Urchin inspiration is awarded when she is saved.
---
The Central Cavern is the first chamber reached from the Sacred Pool. It contains the principal fresco sequence and the largest concentration of story interactions.
Arabella’s fate
When the party first enters, Kagha is deciding what to do with Arabella. This is a time-sensitive-feeling scene even though it is not necessarily governed by a visible countdown. The safest procedure is to intervene immediately rather than leave the chamber to explore first.
A character with druid-related dialogue options may be able to influence both Teela and Kagha. Other characters can use persuasion, intimidation, class options or other dialogue routes.
Saving Arabella is strongly recommended because her survival affects later interactions and prevents the loss of a child whose storyline continues beyond the Grove.
Kagha and the Shadow Druids
The Central Cavern is also where the party can begin or continue:
Kagha’s behaviour is not explained fully by her public speeches. The evidence required to expose her connection to the Shadow Druids is found in the Servants’ Quarters, especially in her personal chest. Once the evidence is presented, the rats around her reveal their true identities as Shadow Druids:
The confrontation can end in combat or through dialogue if Kagha is persuaded to reconsider. A Druid character who helps defeat the Shadow Druids can receive Pale Oak from Kagha, or from Rath if Kagha has died. The recipient also gains the title Faithwarden.
Kagha and the Shadow Druids
Frescos
Four large frescos line the central chamber. They depict the history of the Emerald Grove and its struggle against darkness. Each mural has an associated plaque and can be interpreted through ability checks.
The checks include Investigation, Religion and History. Druids, bards, paladins and clerics may receive special recognition or narration. Understanding the whole sequence can provide additional dialogue options during the Kagha confrontation.
Shadowheart can also react to the murals if her Sharran identity is already known, connecting the Grove’s history to the Dark Justiciars and her personal storyline.
---
The Servants’ Quarters lie north-west of the Central Cavern behind a movable stone door. They are less important for combat than for investigation and environmental storytelling.
Rows of stone tablets function as crude records or shelving. A stone desk holds material relating to the Rite of Thorns and the Emerald Enclave’s principles.
Kagha’s chest
Kagha’s personal chest is hidden behind a stone bookcase. Inside is:
Reading the book progresses or begins Investigate Kagha and can grant the Sage inspiration Secrets of the Shadow Druids.
Because the chest and most objects in this room are owned, the party should search carefully. Stealth, darkness or concealment can prevent Marcoryl and Silver from noticing the theft.

The Druids’ Chambers are the working and medical area of the complex. They contain stone beds, desks, alembics, distillers and a Cauldron of Boiling Theriac.
Nettie’s treatment area
Nettie is found here tending to the Wounded Bird. A character can speak with the bird using Speak with Animals. Healing magic or a healing potion can also cure the bird, although some darker dialogue options are available to Dark Urge characters.
The bird encounter can produce different outcomes. Prodding or forcing the wounded bird to continue speaking can cause it to die from exhaustion, and certain choices can have consequences for paladins.
The Druid Notebook
A Druid Notebook near one of the beds contains an early reference to the Shadow Curse and describes its effects. It is an easy piece of lore to overlook because the room is primarily associated with Nettie.
Cauldron of Boiling Theriac
The cauldron is a remnant of an earlier version of Nettie’s quest. In the released game, it is primarily environmental rather than a required step for producing an antidote. The relevant quest design was changed during development.

The Enclave Library lies beyond a concealed stone door in the Druids’ Chambers. The entrance requires a DC 10 Perception check to notice and cannot be opened through ordinary lockpicking.
The library contains Halsin’s desk, records, stone tablets, a wolf statue and the mechanism for reaching the Hidden Vault.
There are two principal ways to enter
- 01Tell Nettie about the tadpole during Find a Cure, causing her to open the door.
- 02Use the Key of the Ancients with a party member who has it equipped.
Halsin’s desk and parasite specimen
Halsin’s work area contains notes and research connected to the missing First Druid. A Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen is prominently highlighted by the Dream Guardian when appropriate.
The room also contains a makeshift autopsy table holding a Dissected Drow, reinforcing the Grove’s attempt to understand the parasite and the wider threat.
Stone tablets and books
The alcoves contain common books and scrolls. Many containers are marked as owned, so the party should not assume that a library means free loot.
Notable records associated with the wider Inner Sanctum include:
Several Bullywug Trumpets grow around the library as environmental objects and minor loot.
Rune mechanism
A wolf statue stands in the centre of the library, surrounded by four rune pedestals. One slot is empty. Placing the Rune of the Wolf into the missing slot and activating the four pedestals opens the stairs to the Hidden Vault.
The Rune of the Wolf is normally awarded by Rath for rescuing Halsin. It can also be taken from him directly, but this is a risky alternative.
Rear passage
A second concealed door at the far end of the library leads to the rear antechamber. It requires a DC 5 Perception check to notice and the Key of the Ancients to open.
The passage contains two poison vents. Disarm or avoid them before continuing into the Underground Passage.
---
The Hidden Vault is the Inner Sanctum’s main secret area. It is beneath the Enclave Library and is opened by the four-rune mechanism.
Access steps
- 01Obtain the Rune of the Wolf from Rath.
- 02Enter the Enclave Library.
- 03Place the rune in the empty pedestal.
- 04Activate the remaining rune pedestals.
- 05Descend the spiral staircase beneath the wolf statue.
Rewards
Sorrow is displayed beneath the wolf’s head statue. The Robe of Summer is kept in a nearby trunk. The surrounding crates contain consumables rather than a fixed, high-value equipment set.
The principal rewards are

Save Arabella
This is the Inner Sanctum’s most immediate event. Intervene when entering the Central Cavern and do not leave the scene unresolved if you want Arabella to survive.
Find a Cure
Nettie’s encounter is one of the first attempts to investigate the party’s tadpole. The quest leads through the Druids’ Chambers and into the Enclave Library.
The library also contains research, parasite-related material and Halsin’s notes, making it one of the most relevant places in the Grove for this quest.
Save the First Druid
The Inner Sanctum is where the party learns more about Halsin’s absence and can eventually receive the Rune of the Wolf from Rath after rescuing him.
Investigate Kagha
Resolving this before the Grove’s larger conflict is complete gives the party the most control over Kagha’s outcome.
The best route is
- 01Search the Servants’ Quarters.
- 02Find Kagha’s hidden chest.
- 03Read Faldorn’s Canticle.
- 04Obtain or follow the evidence leading to the Shadow Druids.
- 05Return to Kagha.
- 06Choose whether to expose, persuade or fight.
Save the Refugees
Kagha’s policies and the Rite of Thorns are central to the refugee crisis. The Inner Sanctum provides the political context for the conflict, though major refugee and tiefling interactions take place elsewhere in the Emerald Grove.
Daughter of Darkness
Shadowheart may react to the Inner Sanctum’s frescos and the history of the Grove if the party already knows she is a follower of Shar. This can advance or enrich her personal storyline.
---
The following named items are associated with the Inner Sanctum’s rooms and connected loot tables. Some are fixed placements, while others are records or consumables found in containers.
Equipment and quest items
Environmental and minor objects
The item list includes some content that may be obtained only under a specific outcome. For example, Pale Oak depends on the Shadow Druid resolution and a Druid character being present. The Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen is on Halsin’s desk, while the Hidden Vault’s Sorrow and Robe of Summer require the rune mechanism.
---
Poison vents
The rear library passage contains two poison vents. They are avoidable or disarmable, but they are easy to trigger if the party rushes through the hidden door.
Owned containers
Many containers in the Servants’ Quarters and Enclave Library are red-outlined. Taking items openly can cause a witness to object or make nearby druids hostile.
Missable or outcome-dependent content

Before leaving the Inner Sanctum, check that you have:
---
Is the Inner Sanctum a separate map?
No. It is a practical wiki designation for the subterranean rooms beyond the Sacred Pool. The game’s map generally marks the area as part of Emerald Grove.
How do I enter the Inner Sanctum?
Use the carved stone door in the Sacred Pool. You can also reach it from the Underground Passage through the concealed rear route.
How do I open the Enclave Library?
Tell Nettie about your tadpole during the Find a Cure sequence, or use the Key of the Ancients. The concealed door must first be noticed with Perception and cannot be lockpicked.
How do I open the Hidden Vault?
Place the Rune of the Wolf into the empty pedestal in the Enclave Library, then activate all four rune pedestals.
Where is Sorrow?
Sorrow is in the Hidden Vault beneath the Enclave Library. The vault is opened using the Rune of the Wolf mechanism.
Can Kagha be redeemed?
Yes. If the Shadow Druid conspiracy is exposed, Kagha can be persuaded to abandon them. Otherwise, she may fight alongside them and must be defeated.
Is the Underground Passage part of the Inner Sanctum?
No. It is a neighbouring connected area. The Inner Sanctum has a rear door leading into it, but the Underground Passage has its own geography, encounters and routes.
Is there a shop in the Inner Sanctum?
No functional shop or ordinary commercial service is established in the area. The location contains medical, scholarly and administrative spaces, but not a merchant district.
