About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Two events, including the assault on Last Light Inn, the Shadow Curse, the Nightsong, Moonrise Towers, and several companion and refugee storylines.

Overview

Last Light Inn is one of the most important locations in Act Two of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not merely an inn or a safe waypoint. It is a fortified refuge in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, a Harper base, a temporary home for rescued tieflings and deep gnomes, a staging point for the assault on Moonrise Towers, and the centre of several quests involving Isobel, Jaheira, Halsin, Karlach, Mol, Wulbren and the Shadow Curse.

The location occupies a large island in the northern part of the Ruined Battlefield. Its protection comes from a moonlit magical dome maintained by Isobel, a Selûnite cleric. While the dome holds, most of the island is safe from the Shadow Curse. If Isobel is kidnapped or killed, the protection collapses and the inn’s inhabitants are exposed to the curse. This can transform a busy refuge into a battlefield and permanently remove many characters, traders, quests and rewards.

---

Courtyard and main entrance

The main bridge enters the courtyard. The party is usually stopped by Elifer, who calls for Jaheira. Jaheira tests the party’s connection to the Absolute with a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen and questions how infected adventurers can resist the cult. Depending on earlier choices, Mol or Marcus may help vouch for the party. The player can also expose Marcus as an Absolute agent during the introduction.

Quartermaster Talli offers a general equipment shop. Each party member can pass a DC 10 Persuasion check when first speaking to her to receive a Supply Pack. This can be attempted separately by each party member.

Harper memorial

South of the courtyard is a small memorial dedicated to fallen Harpers. Harper Meygan mourns Harper Yonas here during the first visit. If the party found Yonas’s body elsewhere and took his sword, returning it to Meygan provides additional context and can grant background inspirations.

The funeral scene is missable. It must be witnessed before Marcus attempts to kidnap Isobel.

Stable and smithy

The stable is in the northern part of the courtyard. Dammon works at the forge here if he survived Act One and reached Last Light Inn.

Dammon is one of the most important NPCs in the area:

If Karlach is present, she normally reacts to seeing Dammon and identifies him as the tiefling blacksmith who may be able to help her. The required Infernal Iron must be available in the active party’s inventory for the repair.

The stable also contains the Strange Ox, assuming it survived its earlier encounters. A successful Insight check can reveal that it is not an ordinary animal. Challenging it causes it to transform into a Phasm Ooze. If defeated, it drops the Hat of Fire Acuity. This interaction has additional dialogue for the Dark Urge and can count as an oathbreaking action for paladins.

A locked rustic chest on the upper level of the stable contains Rippling Force Mail. It requires a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check to open if the key is not obtained.

Stable and smithy: steps

  1. 01
He can continue Karlach’s personal quest.
  2. 02
He can use Infernal Iron to repair Karlach’s engine.
  3. 03
    He acts as a trader.
  4. 04
He can craft Flawed Helldusk equipment.
  5. 05
He can convert Merregon Masks from Grymforge into Orthon Explosives.

Docks

The docks lie behind and below the main building. They serve as both a normal part of the inn and an arrival point for prisoners rescued from Moonrise Towers.

If the party rescues the tieflings or deep gnomes and chooses to travel by boat, Harper Arthus stops them at the docks and conducts another inspection. This happens even if Jaheira already trusts the party. The docks also provide access to the inn’s basement.

Main hall

The ground floor is the social centre of the inn.

Mattis sells small goods and can provide the Tower-Shaped Key, which opens the basement of the Mason’s Guild in Reithwin Town. His stall contains items that can later be looted if the inn is assaulted and Mol is kidnapped.

Jaheira can invite the party to drink wine. The wine is treated with truth serum, although the party can identify or resist it through dialogue and ability checks. This scene helps establish Jaheira’s suspicion and her eventual cooperation.

Near the hearth, Alfira and Cerys can progress the refugee storyline and begin or advance Rescue the Tieflings and Find Zevlor.

At the bar, Umi and Ide try to prevent Rolan from drinking himself into despair. Rolan eventually leaves the inn after a long rest and moves into the Ruined Battlefield. Ide can be persuaded to surrender a book she found and intended to give him.

Barcus Wroot is near an alchemist’s table. He can initiate or advance Rescue Wulbren. If Wulbren and the deep gnomes are saved, Barcus rewards the party with Brilliant Retort.

The cat His Majesty wanders nearby. Speaking to him can grant background inspiration, and his presence changes depending on events involving other cats in Act Two.

At the lanceboard table, Mol may play against Raphael. The player can advise Mol, interfere with the match or otherwise influence the scene. Raphael’s appearance depends on whether the party has already encountered him at the Grand Mausoleum.

Art Cullagh’s room

Art Cullagh lies unconscious in a room on the ground floor. He is watched by Fist J’ehlar and may be accompanied by Counsellor Florrick and other Flaming Fists, depending on Act One progress.

Speaking to J’ehlar or Art begins Wake Art Cullagh. Art repeats a song containing the name Thaniel, giving Halsin a vital lead about the spirit of the land and the origins of the Shadow Curse. The quest then leads the party to the House of Healing, where they must obtain Art’s lute and use it to wake him.

If Isobel is kidnapped or killed before Art is awakened, Art dies before he can provide the necessary lead. This can prevent the normal route to lifting the Shadow Curse.

Upper floor and balcony

The upper floor contains Isobel’s room and the balcony where she performs prayers to Selûne. Speaking to Isobel grants Blessing of Selûne, depending on the state of the party’s protection from the Shadow Curse. If the Harpers acquired Kar’niss’s Moonlantern, Isobel can also help provide it to the party.

Speaking to Isobel eventually triggers Resolve the Abduction. Marcus, a Flaming Fist secretly serving the Absolute, attacks with winged horrors and attempts to kidnap Isobel.

Basement and connected passage

The basement contains storage rooms, a small jail, an evidence chest and a hidden route into a subterranean cavern. It connects to the cellar of a mansion on the edge of the Ruined Battlefield.

The basement route is not a safe substitute for the normal entrance. If the party emerges without having first gained accepted access through the bridge or docks, the inn may turn hostile.

Later, Halsin opens a portal to the Shadowfell while searching for Thaniel. The party must defend it against waves of shadow creatures. Successful defence enables Halsin to become a full companion and is an important step towards lifting the Shadow Curse.

---

Main bridge

The ordinary route is across the bridge from the Ruined Battlefield. The moonshield’s boundary crosses the bridge, making the transition from cursed territory to protected ground visually and mechanically clear. The Last Light Inn waypoint is located at approximately X: -17, Y: 133, while the bridge approach is around X: -2, Y: 114.

Approach carefully. Blast mines are placed near the routes, and the Harpers react if the party repeatedly extinguishes torches near guards. Dousing three sources of fire in succession can turn the Harpers hostile.

Harper convoy route

If the party enters the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Mountain Pass, it can follow the Absolute convoy and meet Kar’niss, a drider carrying a functioning Moonlantern. The party can side with Kar’niss or help the Harpers ambush the convoy.

If the Harpers take the Moonlantern, they direct the party towards Last Light Inn. If the party remains with the convoy, Kar’niss guides it towards Moonrise Towers instead.

Boat route

After rescuing prisoners from Moonrise Towers, the party may travel by boat to the Last Light Inn docks. This route leads to another Harper inspection and can be useful if the party is returning from Moonrise.

Basement route

The basement connects to a subterranean cavern and a mansion cellar. It can be useful for exploration, treasure and the Selûnite resistance storyline, but it should not be used as the first entrance unless the party has already established accepted access.

---

Harpers

The Harpers operate Last Light Inn as a fortified base. Jaheira is the most prominent Harper leader, while numerous named Harpers patrol the courtyard, docks and surrounding approaches.

The Harpers are suspicious of tadpole-infected adventurers, but they can be persuaded that the party resists the Absolute. They become allies for the assault on Moonrise Towers if the inn survives and the party has built sufficient trust with Jaheira.

Named Harpers

The exact presence and survival of these NPCs can change with progression.

Flaming Fists

The Flaming Fists are represented by the wounded or displaced survivors of the wider Act One and Act Two conflicts.

Named Flaming Fists

Marcus is an infiltrator rather than a trustworthy defender. His apparent affiliation allows him to enter the inn and attempt to seize Isobel.

Tiefling refugees

The inn becomes a temporary home for refugees who survived the Emerald Grove storyline. Their presence depends heavily on Act One choices.

Named tieflings

Some appear only if the party defended the grove and helped the refugees. Others arrive after being rescued from Moonrise Towers. Their survival contributes to the Leave No One Behind achievement.

Deep gnomes

The deep gnomes arrive if the party rescues them from Moonrise Towers.

Barcus can trade with the party and later provides Brilliant Retort if the deep gnomes are saved.

Other named characters

Halsin’s presence is connected to the Thaniel and Shadow Curse storyline. Raphael’s appearance depends on whether the party has already met him elsewhere.

---

Quartermaster Talli

Quartermaster Talli operates a Harper supply post in the courtyard.

Talli relocates to Moonrise Towers later in the Act, so purchasing important equipment before that transition is advisable.

Notable stock includes

Dammon

Dammon sells and crafts equipment at the stable smithy.

Dammon’s crafted equipment

His story services require the relevant materials and earlier quest progress. In particular, Karlach must be alive and Dammon must have survived Act One.

Dammon’s stock

Mattis

Mattis runs a small stall in the main hall.

The Tower-Shaped Key is useful for the Mason’s Guild basement in Reithwin Town. Mattis’s stock can become freely lootable after the inn’s assault and Mol’s kidnapping, but relying on that outcome risks losing the NPC and other quest content.

Barcus Wroot

He also rewards the party with Brilliant Retort if Wulbren and the deep gnomes are saved.

---

Resolve the Abduction

This is the inn’s central crisis.

After speaking with Isobel, Marcus attacks with winged horrors and attempts to carry her away. The player must protect Isobel and defeat Marcus before he removes her from the moonshield.

Outcomes

When the moonshield collapses, inhabitants succumb to the Shadow Curse. Some die outright, while others become hostile shadow-cursed versions of themselves. Jaheira is a notable exception.

Preparation checklist

The fight can be made significantly harder by poor positioning. Avoid spreading the party too far across the inn, because Marcus and the winged horrors can reach Isobel quickly.

Outcomes

Outcomes
NameDetails
Isobel survivesthe inn remains protected.

Isobel diesthe moonshield collapses.
The party helps Marcusthe inn falls immediately.

Preparation checklist: Before speaking to Isobel

  1. 01
Complete conversations with Jaheira, Mattis, Alfira, Cerys, Rolan and Barcus.
  2. 02
Visit Dammon with Karlach if possible.
  3. 03
Shop with Talli, Dammon, Mattis and Barcus.
  4. 04
Speak to Art Cullagh and Fist J’ehlar.
  5. 05
Inspect the memorial and speak to Meygan.
  6. 06
Position the party near Isobel’s room if you want a safer opening round.
  7. 07
Prepare crowd control for winged horrors and Marcus.
  8. 08
Protect Isobel’s concentration and prevent enemies from surrounding her.

Wake Art Cullagh

Art lies unconscious in the main building. Speak to him or Fist J’ehlar, then investigate the House of Healing and retrieve Art’s lute. Playing it for him wakes him and reveals his connection to Thaniel.

This quest is a gateway to Lift the Shadow Curse. If Art dies before being awakened, the normal progression is lost, although the game may provide alternate ways to continue parts of the storyline depending on the player’s actions.

Lift the Shadow Curse

After Art reveals the name Thaniel, speak to Halsin. The quest eventually leads to the defence of Halsin’s portal in the inn’s basement.

The party must hold the area while shadow creatures attack the portal. Success allows Halsin to join the party properly and leads to the search for Thaniel and Oliver. Completing the wider storyline can eventually remove the Shadow Curse from the region.

Rescue the Tieflings

The inn serves as a meeting point for the refugees’ Moonrise prison rescue storyline.

The quest’s details depend on which refugees survived Act One and which prisoners were rescued. The long-term objective is to save as many tieflings as possible, contributing to Leave No One Behind.

Rescue Wulbren

Barcus Wroot can initiate or advance the deep gnome rescue quest. After Wulbren and the other prisoners are rescued, Barcus can reward the party with Brilliant Retort.

The quest links Last Light Inn to Moonrise Towers Prison and to later tensions between Barcus and Wulbren.

Infiltrate Moonrise Towers

Jaheira wants the party to investigate Moonrise Towers and find a way to defeat Ketheric Thorm. If Last Light Inn survives, the Harpers and Flaming Fists later join the frontal assault on Moonrise Towers after Ketheric’s immortality has been challenged.

Karlach’s engine

Dammon can repair Karlach’s infernal engine using Infernal Iron. This is one of the most important reasons to visit the stable before allowing the inn to fall.

He can also use additional Infernal Iron to craft rare armour, granting the Guild Artisan inspiration Hellish Armaments.

---

If the moonshield falls

Once the protection disappears, most inhabitants are cursed. This can remove:

The specific result varies according to timing and earlier choices, but the practical rule is simple: complete essential conversations, purchases and repairs before resolving the inn’s major crisis.

Missable memorial inspirations

Meygan’s mourning scene and the possible return of Yonas’s sword must be completed before Marcus begins the kidnapping attempt. This is an unusually strict timing condition.

Rolan’s departure

After a long rest, Rolan leaves Last Light Inn and moves into the Ruined Battlefield. Speak to him, Umi and Ide before resting if you want the inn version of their conversations.

Mattis after the assault

After the inn is assaulted and Mol is kidnapped, Mattis leaves his stall. Some of his goods, including a Potion of Invisibility and Trap Disarm Toolkit, can then be looted. This is not a substitute for shopping before the assault, because the outcome is dangerous and can remove other services.

---

Fixed or named loot

Some equipment is worn by NPCs or obtained through a story outcome rather than lying openly in a container. The Hat of Fire Acuity, for example, is associated with the Strange Ox encounter, while Rippling Force Mail is in a locked stable chest.

Fixed or named loot

Literature and documents

Named written material associated with the inn includes:

These documents help establish the inn’s earlier Selûnite history, the fall of the region and the Harpers’ current operations.

---

Conditional creatures

If the moonshield is destroyed, the inn can contain or generate shadow-cursed threats. The named creature directory includes:

The list is state-dependent. These are not all present during the inn’s normal protected state.

The Strange Ox and His Majesty are also listed among creatures associated with the location, although they are not ordinary hostile encounters in the normal state of the inn.

For a first playthrough, the following order minimises avoidable losses:

Is Last Light Inn safe from the Shadow Curse?

Only while Isobel’s moonshield is active. The dome protects the island and its inhabitants, but the surrounding Shadow-Cursed Lands remain dangerous.

Should I speak to Isobel immediately?

You can, but there is usually no need to rush. Explore the inn, complete shopping, speak to Art and visit Dammon first. Speaking to Isobel begins the major abduction encounter.

Can I enter through the basement?

Yes, but it is not always safe. If the party emerges without first being accepted through the bridge or docks, the inn may become hostile.

Can Dammon repair Karlach here?

Yes, provided Dammon survived Act One and Karlach is available. He requires Infernal Iron for the engine repair.

What happens if Isobel is kidnapped?

The moonshield falls. Most people in the inn are cursed, killed or turned hostile. This can permanently remove many quests, traders and rewards.

Can Jaheira be recruited if Last Light Inn falls?

The normal recruitment route depends on the inn surviving and Jaheira surviving subsequent events. There may be alternative circumstances in some story states, but preserving the inn is the most reliable route.

Is Last Light Inn in the same place as Reithwin Town?

No. Last Light Inn is in the northern part of the Ruined Battlefield. Reithwin Town, Moonrise Towers and the House of Healing are separate neighbouring locations within the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

---

This guide is based on the base game’s location data and quest structure. Character presence can vary according to Act One survival, Moonrise prison rescues, the Dark Urge, companion choices and the timing of major Act Two events. The exact contents of trader inventories may also vary with level, restocking and progression.

The complete location directory is therefore best understood as a verified directory of named entries associated with Last Light Inn, not a promise that every listed NPC appears in every playthrough.
