Key takeaways
- The main cave entrance is at approximately X 82, Y: 450 in the Forest. A second entrance through a rocky crevice is available only to Small or Tiny creatures, including suitable disguises, shapeshifts and summons.
- The safest way to preserve the Owlbear Cub is to meet the mother, spare the cub and avoid killing or downing it. The cub may later be taken to the Goblin Camp and eventually recruited as a camp follower.
- The south-western branch leads to a shrine of Selûne and a magically sealed gilded chest. Find the Selûnite Prayer Sheet behind the statue and read it beside the chest with anyone except Shadowheart.
- The chest contains the Moondrop Pendant, an Idol of Selûne, the Selûnite Rite, a silver necklace, a bloodstone and other recorded contents. Touching it before removing the seal can cause radiant damage.
- The Owlbear Egg is a valuable pickup and is relevant to the Act One quest Steal a Githyanki Egg, although using it as camp supplies can consume it permanently.
- In Honour Mode, the encounter can include an Owlbear Mate, making the combat state different from lower difficulties.
About this guide
Base game, Act One location guide Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the Owlbear Mother, the Owlbear Cub, Shadowheart’s religious identity, the Selûnite shrine, the Owlbear Egg and the possible camp-follower outcome.
Overview
The Owlbear Nest, also called the Owlbear Cave, is a small but unusually consequential location in the Forest region of Act One in Baldur’s Gate 3. It lies west of the Emerald Grove and north-east of the Blighted Village, in a shallow ravine with a stream running through it. The site is not a broad wilderness sub-region: it is a compact cave complex containing the owlbear den, a rocky upper shelf, a Selûnite shrine and the routes linking those spaces.
The cave’s importance comes from three separate threads that overlap here:
It is possible to visit the cave without fighting the mother, and it is also possible for later world-state changes to alter what remains inside. The order in which you visit the cave, rest, deal with the goblins and resolve related encounters can therefore matter.
Geography and boundaries
The Owlbear Nest is a single cave location rather than a collection of separate loading areas. Its layout is roughly ring-shaped. A shallow stream divides much of the cavern, while the main route from the entrance branches towards the den and the shrine.
The Owlbear Den occupies the north-western part of the cave. The Selûnite Shrine is reached by following the south-western route and descending over a cragged rock. Between these areas is a raised rocky shelf overlooking the den. The far section of the shelf requires a jump, and fissured stalactites hang above parts of the cavern. These can be attacked from range and brought down on creatures beneath them.
Included subareas
The nearby Forest, Emerald Grove, Blighted Village and Goblin Camp are separate locations, not parts of the Owlbear Nest. The Goblin Camp is particularly important because the cub can later appear there, but it should not be treated as a subarea of the cave.
Access and routes
Main entrance
The obvious route is the cave mouth in the ravine. Approaching it can trigger a DC 0 Survival check, allowing the party to recognise owlbear tracks, feathers and other signs of the creature inside. If Andrick and Brynna have been persuaded to avenge Edowin, they can be waiting near the entrance.
The entrance is close enough to the Blighted Village that it can be reached early in Act One, but the surrounding area does not provide a dedicated waypoint inside the cave.
Alternate crevice entrance
A rocky crevice at approximately X: 53, Y: 460 provides another route. Finding it requires a DC 5 Perception check, and entering through it requires a Small or Tiny character or creature. The character emerges on a rocky shelf above the den. The route back out also depends on the appropriate size.
This entrance can be useful for scouting or gaining a different position, but it does not remove the need to manage the den encounter. Entering from above can also make it easier to begin combat from an advantageous position, which is not necessarily desirable if recruiting the cub is your priority.
Residents, visitors and conditional characters
Residents
The Owlbear Mother normally confronts the party when they approach the den. The encounter can begin as dialogue rather than immediate combat. Speak with Animals is especially useful: without it, many relevant ability checks use DC 15 values, while it can reduce several checks to DC 10 or lower depending on class options. A Potion of Animal Speaking can be found among the offerings at the Selûnite shrine.
Conditional visitors
Andrick and Brynna are not permanent residents of the cave. Their presence depends on how the earlier encounter concerning Edowin is handled and whether they are persuaded to attack the owlbear.
The Owlbear encounter
There are several broad ways to resolve the den.
Talk, then leave
If the party pacifies the mother through dialogue, she allows them to leave and explore parts of the cavern, although the nest itself remains protected. This is the least destructive approach and is the best starting point if you want to preserve the cub and allow the later goblin-related sequence to occur.
Fight the mother
The party can kill the mother after the conversation or initiate combat through other actions. If the cub survives, a subsequent scene gives the party an opportunity to spare it. The cub must not be killed or downed if you want to recruit it later. The available evidence specifically warns that attacking from stealth without triggering the initial scene can remove the normal spare-or-kill choice, leaving the cub hostile.
Let the goblins intervene
If the party encounters the mother and then leaves her alive, a later visit can show that a goblin hunting party has killed her. The cub may then appear at the Goblin Camp after a long rest. This route can preserve access to the cub while avoiding a direct fight with the mother, provided the cub itself remains alive.
Practical warning
If you are aiming for the camp follower, avoid:
The cub’s recruitment is not completed inside the cave. Sparing it is only the first step. Later events at the Goblin Camp and subsequent camp visits are required.
Practical warning
- 01killing the cub;
- 02downing the cub, including through non-lethal attacks;
- 03beginning combat from stealth in a way that skips the initial dialogue;
- 04allowing unrelated progression to close off the goblin sequence before checking the cub’s state.
Selûnite Shrine
The shrine lies down the south-western branch, beyond the cragged descent. A DC 15 Religion check can identify it as a shrine to Selûne. It contains offerings, books and a gilded chest protected by Selûne’s magic. One of the offerings is a Potion of Animal Speaking, which can be useful before confronting the owlbear.
The shrine also contains literature concerning Selûne and Shar, making it one of the early locations where Shadowheart’s religious allegiance can become more apparent. If Shadowheart is present, the chest interaction can produce approval consequences or dialogue depending on whether the party respects her objection, persuades her or takes the contents regardless.
Opening the gilded chest
Reading the prayer removes the seal and can grant the Acolyte inspiration Her Gift of Silver. Shadowheart cannot use the prayer to open the chest while following Shar. Alternative methods include Knock or opening it as a cleric of Selûne.
Touching or attempting to open the chest while the seal remains active can trigger a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw to avoid 4d6 radiant damage.
Opening the gilded chest
- 01Approach the shrine and locate the statue of Selûne.
- 02Jump behind the statue.
- 03Pass the passive DC 10 Perception check to reveal the Selûnite Prayer Sheet.
- 04Read the prayer while standing beside the chest.
- 05Use anyone except Shadowheart for the reading.
Items and collectibles
Gilded chest
The Moondrop Pendant is an uncommon amulet. Its Writhing Dance effect prevents the wearer from provoking opportunity attacks while at 50% hit points or less.
Owlbear Den directory
The buried chest on the upper shelf requires a DC 15 Survival check to detect and contains a Grease Bottle and a random arrow.
The Oak Father’s Embrace
This uncommon medium armour is found on a headless skeleton near the nest. Its Order of Nature effect deals radiant damage to undead creatures that hit the wearer and causes beasts that hit the wearer to deal additional radiant damage.
Vision of the Absolute
If the Owlbear Mother dies, she can yield the Head of a Broken Spear. Combining it with the Shaft of a Broken Spear found on Edowin’s body reassembles Vision of the Absolute. This can also provide the Guild Artisan inspiration A New Vision.
Owlbear Egg
The Owlbear Egg is found in the nest. It has a high sale value, can provide camp supplies and is relevant to Steal a Githyanki Egg. Treat it as a quest item if you intend to pursue that quest, because selecting it as food during a long rest can consume it.
Hazards and tactical opportunities
The cave’s main dangers are environmental and positional rather than numerous enemy groups.
The most reliable general approach is to speak with animals, resolve the mother encounter deliberately, then explore the shrine and upper shelf after the immediate danger has passed.
Hazards and tactical opportunities
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Fissured stalactites | shoot them down to damage creatures beneath them. |
| Stream and uneven terrain | narrow approaches can make it difficult to surround the mother safely. |
| Selûne’s seal | touching the gilded chest prematurely risks radiant damage. |
| Stealth approach | useful for positioning, but dangerous if recruiting the cub because it may skip the normal dialogue. |
| Upper shelf | provides elevation and a route into the den, but some sections require jumping. |
Recommended exploration route
- 01Enter through the main cave mouth.
- 02Check for Andrick and Brynna if their earlier dialogue makes their appearance possible.
- 03Before approaching the den, acquire or activate Speak with Animals.
- 04Move towards the Owlbear Mother and choose whether to pacify, retreat or fight.
- 05If pursuing the cub, spare it and do not use attacks that can down it.
- 06Follow the south-western path to the Selûnite Shrine.
- 07Take the Potion of Animal Speaking and inspect the statue.
- 08Retrieve and read the Selûnite Prayer Sheet with a character other than Shadowheart.
- 09Loot the gilded chest after removing the seal.
- 10Search the upper shelf for the buried chest.
- 11Inspect the den for the Owlbear Egg, armour and spear component.
- 12Leave and long rest only after deciding whether you want the goblin hunting-party state to progress.
Mission and progression connections
Steal a Githyanki Egg
The Owlbear Egg can be used in the wider quest involving the Githyanki egg. It is not the intended objective, but its presence creates an alternate possibility. Keep it separate from camp supplies if you want to retain that option.
Daughter of Darkness
The Selûnite shrine is connected to Shadowheart’s companion storyline through its conflict between Selûne and Shar. The chest does not by itself resolve her quest, but the interaction can expose or reinforce information about her faith and produce companion dialogue.
Owlbear Cub camp follower
The recruitment path begins in this cave but continues elsewhere:
The mother may be killed by goblins after the party leaves, or she may be killed by the party. The cub can still remain recruitable if it survives.
Owlbear Cub camp follower
- 01Encounter the mother and cub.
- 02Spare the cub.
- 03Avoid killing or downing it.
- 04Leave the cave and allow the relevant goblin events to occur, if using that route.
- 05Visit the Goblin Camp when the cub appears there.
- 06Continue visiting camp and responding appropriately until the cub becomes a camp follower.
