About this guide
Base game, Act Three. Major spoilers for Mystic Carrion, Thrumbo, Free the Artist, the Ancient Lair and nearby Lower City events.
Overview
Philgrave’s Mansion is a waterside house in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate 3, occupied by the undead spirit medium Mystic Carrion. It is not simply a single building. For practical exploration purposes, the location includes the mansion’s lobby and salon, its upper floors, a hidden basement laboratory, the surrounding alleyways and streets, and the adjoining Heapside Strand beach.
The mansion is the centre of several connected story threads. It can provide the Torch of Revocation for Free the Artist, begins or advances Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant, reveals the route towards the Ancient Lair, and contains important clues concerning Carrion’s immortality. The beach outside also hosts a separate sahuagin encounter, minor NPC scenes, a camp-supply trader and possible contingency loot connected with the Iron Throne.
Entering the mansion
The front entrance is not the only route into Philgrave’s Mansion. If the party lacks the intended story access, the western stone wall can be opened by lockpicking or destroyed. A hole in the wall near approximately X: 29, Y: -166 also allows the party to sneak inside.
A second, more story-oriented route is available through Free the Artist. A letter found in the hidden area of the atelier at Lady Jannath’s Estate contains a passphrase that can be used to gain entry. The password is particularly useful for players who want to enter without immediately treating Carrion’s home as a burglary target.
Recommended approach
For a first visit, the most reliable sequence is:
If any of Carrion’s organs have already been destroyed before the party first meets him, he becomes immediately hostile and the normal version of Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant cannot be obtained. The organ-related quest can still continue in some form, but the dialogue and available route change.
Recommended approach
- 01Reach the Lower City and travel towards the waterfront.
- 02Activate the Heapside Strand waypoint if it is not already active.
- 03Explore the outside of the mansion before entering.
- 04Check the alley, stairs and beach for NPC dialogue.
- 05Enter through the wall, hole or passphrase route.
- 06Speak to Mystic Carrion before attacking or destroying his organs, unless you are deliberately pursuing a hostile route.
- 07Search the upper floors for Thrumbo’s note.
- 08Visit the beach-side house east of the mansion to find Thrumbo.
- 09Decide whether to return Thrumbo, side with him, or postpone the confrontation.
- 10Search the basement and read A Mummy’s Memories before leaving the wider quest chain.
Moving through the upper floors
The upper floors are guarded by Carrion’s undead servants. One of them warns the party not to proceed. If the party is detected, Ligus can stop them and object to their presence. He may be persuaded, deceived or intimidated into allowing them through.
A locked north-western room contains a beggar’s portrait. Examining it reveals a note from Thrumbo and points towards the beach. This is the mansion’s most direct clue to the servant’s hiding place.
Reaching the basement
The basement can be entered in two ways:
The locked upper doors are associated with the Key (Philgrave’s Mansion), which can be carried by Carrion and Ulnar. The key ultimately leads to the hatch route into the basement.
---
Ground floor
The ground floor consists of a small lobby and a larger living room. Mystic Carrion occupies the salon with the ghast Ulnar. Coffins and caskets are scattered around the room, reinforcing that the mansion is both a residence and a working necromantic establishment.
Some caskets contain Ancient Servants. If the party interacts with one, the servant emerges. If Carrion is attacked or the party openly turns against him, the caskets break open and release seven Ancient Servants, turning the room into a larger fight.
Carrion’s dialogue changes according to the party’s quest state. The conversation can reflect:
Carrion may also act as a trader, selling several rare items. His services and his relationship with the party therefore depend heavily on whether the party speaks to him before taking hostile action.
Gilded chest
A locked chest in the rear area contains the Torch of Revocation, along with gold and random alchemical ingredients. It can be opened by lockpicking at DC 25 Sleight of Hand, by obtaining the key from Carrion, or by using the correct quest route.
If Carrion has been killed, the Torch can be found in the gilded chest behind his former position. This makes the item recoverable even if the party refuses to cooperate with him.
Upper floors
The upper floors are primarily a progression area for Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant. The most important fixed discovery is the locked room containing the beggar’s portrait and Thrumbo’s note.
The upper floors also contain the hidden or restricted route towards the basement. Their main challenge is not a traditional boss encounter but navigating Carrion’s servants and deciding whether to talk, sneak, persuade or fight.
Basement laboratory
The basement is a used laboratory rather than a pristine workshop. Shelves and containers hold alchemical ingredients. Unlike many decorative bottle racks elsewhere in the game, the racks here can contain useful healing potions and elixirs. A bookcase may also contain random spell scrolls, so the contents are not all fixed in every playthrough.
The most important item is A Mummy’s Memories, found on a stone reading easel on the working desk. Reading it advances End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality and marks the entrance to the Ancient Lair on the map. An Elixir of Necrotic Resistance is beside it.
If the party did not obtain the Dark Amethyst in the Whispering Depths during Act One, it can be found here instead. This is a progression-state alternative, not an additional copy for every playthrough.
Heapside Strand beach
Heapside Strand is a narrow waterfront strip east of the mansion. It contains:
The beach is visually adjacent to the mansion but is a separate outdoor subarea with its own characters and encounter.
---
Mansion residents and quest characters
Thrumbo is initially a runaway servant rather than a permanent mansion resident. He hides in a wardrobe inside a beach house east of the mansion, at approximately X: 56, Y: -120. After the party sides with him and kills Carrion, Thrumbo and the strange beggars move into the mansion. Thrumbo then becomes a trader there.
The names of several of Carrion’s undead servants are derived from Latin anatomical terms for bones or body parts. This is a small but deliberate piece of wordplay in the mansion’s enemy roster.
Exterior NPCs
Near the Eastside stairs, Druid Klarrvox tends a dying young tree and prays to Chantea. In the alley beside Felogyr’s Fireworks, Battrick Degronce complains to Fist Jimi Borleas about the smell from Carrion’s house and the strange figures leaving at night. Borleas is largely uninterested in investigating.
Near the Heapside Strand waypoint, Silfy sells the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette.
Heapside Strand civilians
At the pergola, Beulla Sandfoot and Fyrd Nuugh discuss smuggling food into the city without attracting the Guild’s attention. Glorissima begs on the stair landing while Meem Grayling wants to sleep. Rossina and Grout are gnomes near the fish market and are notable as the only Forest Gnome NPCs listed in the game.
---
Philgrave’s Mansion is not a Guild headquarters or a Flaming Fist facility. Its security is private and undead, supplied by Carrion’s servants.
The nearby beach and streets show the Guild’s wider influence. Beulla and Fyrd are concerned about smuggling, while the surrounding Lower City is patrolled and politically shaped by the Guild and Nine-Fingers Keene. These conversations provide context rather than creating a formal faction quest at the mansion itself.
---
Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant
This is the mansion’s defining quest. Carrion asks the party to locate Thrumbo, his missing servant.
Recommended route
The three strange beggars can provide additional clues, though they are not mandatory:
These clues point towards the waterfront and Vonayn’s Home.
Siding with Carrion
If the party attacks Thrumbo, they can carry his corpse back to Carrion. Carrion recognises the body and takes it. The party can bargain over the reward with a DC 20 Persuasion or Intimidation check.
This is the most direct completion route but leaves Carrion in control of the mansion and his former servants.
Siding with Thrumbo
Thrumbo claims that Carrion killed him and the other beggars, then transformed them into undead servants. He also explains that Carrion’s heart is central to stopping him.
If the party helps Thrumbo, the quest becomes a hunt for Carrion’s organs and the Ancient Lair. The relevant book, Funerary Jar Form and Function, can reveal the means by which Thrumbo can force Carrion’s heart out without being killed first.
Recommended route
- 01Enter the mansion and speak with Carrion.
- 02Ask whether there is anything you can do for him.
- 03Accept the request to find Thrumbo.
- 04Explore the upper floor and inspect the beggar’s portrait.
- 05Read Thrumbo’s note.
- 06Travel east along the beach to Vonayn’s Home.
- 07Search the wardrobe to reveal Thrumbo.
- 08Hear Thrumbo’s account of his death and forced transformation.
- 09Choose whether to return him to Carrion or aid his rebellion.
End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality
This quest connects Philgrave’s Mansion to the Ancient Lair and Carrion’s hidden organs. Reading A Mummy’s Memories in the basement marks the Ancient Lair on the map.
The Ancient Lair is a separate dungeon reached through the Lower City and contains several of Carrion’s jars, including his brain and liver. It also contains undead enemies, crawling claws and greater zombies. The fourth organ jar, Carrion’s lungs, is associated with the city graveyard rather than the mansion or Ancient Lair.
Free the Artist
Philgrave’s Mansion is a major stop in Free the Artist. Mystic Carrion previously dealt with Oskar Fevras and knows how to address the spirit problem affecting him.
Carrion offers the Torch of Revocation for 3,000 gold, although he may waive the fee if the party agrees to find Thrumbo. If Carrion becomes an enemy, the party can recover the Torch from the gilded chest in the mansion. The Torch must later be equipped and used on the cursed portrait at Lady Jannath’s Estate.
Search the Cellar and Unlock the Ancient Tome
The mansion is also listed in connection with Search the Cellar and Unlock the Ancient Tome. These links are associated with Carrion’s knowledge, his records and the wider necromantic material found in and around the building. The mansion’s basement is therefore worth searching even if the party has no intention of negotiating with Carrion.
---
Ancient Servants
Seven Ancient Servants are initially contained in coffins and caskets on the ground floor. They emerge if the containers are disturbed or if Carrion is attacked. Their appearance can turn what looks like a conversation encounter into a substantial multi-enemy fight.
Mystic Carrion and Ulnar
Carrion is the mansion’s principal hostile encounter if negotiations fail. Ulnar, a ghast accompanying him, is also present on the ground floor. Fighting Carrion inside the salon can activate the casket enemies, so it is sensible to prepare the room before initiating combat.
Upper-floor servants
The upper floors contain Carrion’s named servants, including Ligus and other anatomical-name undead. Some can be bypassed through dialogue rather than combat.
Sahuagin assault
When the party approaches the beach for the first time, approximately around X: 45, Y: -145, sahuagin emerge from the water. The group includes:
The enemies focus on the party rather than the nearby civilians. Defending the locals can produce a gold reward from the nearest surviving NPC. The Champion carries random valuables and a Smelly Bag containing an early reference to the Iron Throne.
---
Fixed or quest-significant items
The Staff of Cherished Necromancy and Carrion’s keys are associated with Carrion’s loot. The Torch is in the gilded chest in the normal hostile or post-Carrion state, while Carrion may otherwise provide it through the Free the Artist route.
Fixed or quest-significant items
Carrion’s shop inventory
When available as a trader, Mystic Carrion can sell:
Whether Carrion trades depends on the party’s dialogue and progression state. Do not assume this inventory remains available after attacking him.
Basement supplies
The spell-scroll and general alchemical contents should be treated as variable rather than guaranteed named rewards.
Buried treasure
Two buried treasure locations are recorded near the beach:
Digging up and looting the chest in plain sight can count as trespassing to nearby NPCs.
Buried treasure
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Approximately X | 24, Y: -167, requiring DC 15 Survival to detect. |
| Approximately X | 29, Y: -166, requiring DC 10 Survival to detect. |
Beach contingency items
The Heapside Strand area has an unusual fallback function connected with the Iron Throne. If the party has somehow lost a Netherstone, one may be obtainable from the Sahuagin Champion, purchased from Old Troutman or found inside a large fish on the sand. Corpses of Iron Throne captives who were not rescued can eventually wash up on the beach.
---
Before leaving the area, consider confirming that you have:
Is Vonayn’s Home part of Philgrave’s Mansion?
No. It is a separate beach-side building. It is included in this guide because it is the hiding place of Thrumbo and is directly connected to Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant.
Can I get the Torch of Revocation without paying Carrion?
Yes. You can obtain it through the servant quest, steal it from the gilded chest, or find it there after Carrion has been killed. The chest can be difficult to open because it requires a high lockpicking check unless you obtain the key or use an alternative method.
Should I kill Carrion immediately?
Not if you want his initial dialogue, his normal shop inventory or the standard version of Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant. Destroying his organs before meeting him makes him hostile and prevents the ordinary quest start. A hostile route is still possible, but it changes the available progression.
Is the Ancient Lair inside the mansion?
No. The mansion’s basement provides a clue and progression link, but the Ancient Lair is a separate location associated with the Undercity Ruins.
Does the beach encounter belong to the mansion?
It is a neighbouring subarea rather than part of the interior building. It is worth covering alongside the mansion because it contains the waypoint, Thrumbo’s route, Old Troutman, the sahuagin encounter and several progression-state items.
Can Thrumbo become a trader?
Yes. If the party sides with Thrumbo, kills Mystic Carrion and resolves the conflict in Thrumbo’s favour, Thrumbo and the strange beggars move into the mansion. Thrumbo then acts as a trader there.
