Key takeaways
- Ravaged Beach is a location within the Wilderness, not the whole Wilderness map The Roadside Cliffs, Overgrown Ruins and Dank Crypt are related areas, but they should not be treated as identical parts of the beach.
- Shadowheart can be recruited here, while Astarion is found on the western side Lae’zel can also be recovered here if she died during the Nautiloid sequence.
- The location contains several early hidden rewards, including two Potions of Speed, a Ruby, Harper documents, a Silver Pendant and buried chests.
- The Dank Crypt is accessed through the nearby Overgrown Ruins, although a locked ancient door on the beach provides a direct connection once opened.
- The first apparent “safe” interaction with the dying mind flayer can become a lethal encounter. Approach it only when prepared for combat.
- The area is easy to leave quickly, but doing so can mean missing early companion dialogue, Speak with Dead opportunities, hidden treasure and the Harper cache.
About this guide
Baldur’s Gate 3, base game Act: One Overworld region: Wilderness Role: Nautiloid crash site and the player character’s first post-Prologue exploration area Recommended approach: Explore before travelling north into the wider Wilderness Spoiler level: Major Act One spoilers, including early companion recruitment, the Dank Crypt and several missable items
Overview
Ravaged Beach is the south-eastern coastal section of the Act One Wilderness where the Nautiloid crashes after the Prologue. It is the first area most characters explore after escaping the illithid ship, and it introduces several of Baldur’s Gate 3’s central habits at once: searching bodies, using environmental routes, recruiting companions, handling skill checks, finding hidden caches and deciding how far to investigate before moving on.
The location lies beside the River Chionthar and is dominated by the wreckage of the Nautiloid. The crash has destroyed the fishing docks and boats that once occupied parts of the shoreline, leaving behind corpses, mind flayer remains, scattered supplies and several dangerous survivors. The beach is not a single flat stretch of sand. It includes southern and eastern shoreline, a higher western beach, the wreck itself and access points towards the Overgrown Ruins and neighbouring Wilderness areas.
---
Boundaries and included areas
The safest way to understand Ravaged Beach is as the crash-site and shoreline area, rather than as a name for every nearby early-game location.
Neighbouring but separate areas
The Wilderness is the larger region on the River Chionthar, while Ravaged Beach occupies its far south-eastern section. The Roadside Cliffs lie north of the Nautiloid wreck, between the Forest and the Overgrown Ruins.

Neighbouring but separate areas
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Overgrown Ruins | the ruined chapel entrance above the beach. |
| Dank Crypt | the ancient temple dungeon beneath the Overgrown Ruins. |
| Roadside Cliffs | the higher route north-west of the crash site. |
| Emerald Grove Environs | the northern Wilderness approach towards the Emerald Grove. |
| Wilderness | the broader Act One overworld region containing Ravaged Beach and many other locations. |
Geography and major sections
Southern and eastern beach
The player character normally wakes on the southern beach near the wreck. Shadowheart may be found nearby, depending on what happened during the Prologue. If she was rescued from the Nautiloid pod, she is unconscious on the beach with the Mysterious Artefact. If she was not rescued, she can instead be encountered near the ancient door by the Overgrown Ruins waypoint. In either case, this is the earliest opportunity to recruit her and begin Daughter of Darkness.
The shoreline is covered with wreckage, dead fishermen and bodies from the Nautiloid crash. Several eastern corpses can be examined with Speak with Dead, making this one of the first areas where the spell has immediately useful investigative targets.
The beach also provides the first visual indication that the crash was not an ordinary shipwreck. Tissue, hull fragments, dead mind flayers and alien wreckage are scattered around the coast, while the ruined docks suggest that the site was once used by local fishermen.
The Nautiloid wreck
The wreck is spread across the beach and contains dead mind flayers, intellect devourers and other remains from the crash. It is worth searching the wreck thoroughly rather than following the most obvious route north.
A dying mind flayer can be found among the wreckage. Interacting with it is dangerous. A failed or deliberately submissive interaction can kill the character who approaches, after which the mind flayer recovers enough strength to become hostile. Defeating it can grant the Haunted One inspiration To Sleep, Perchance To Dream Tentacled Dreams when applicable.
Western Beach
The western section is rockier and higher than the southern shoreline. A path leads up from a wooden dock towards Astarion’s encounter.
Astarion calls for help beside a broken mind flayer pod. The scene quickly reveals that he is attempting to manipulate the player character into helping him deal with a supposed threat. Regardless of how the conversation develops, this is the main opportunity to recruit him in the crash-site region and begin The Pale Elf.
The western beach also contains an early supply cache. A crate near the dock contains Thieves’ Tools, and a nearby locked wooden chest can be opened with a low Sleight of Hand check. The chest contains a Leather Helmet and gold.

Access and routes
Initial arrival
Ravaged Beach is reached automatically after the Nautiloid Prologue. The player character begins near the southern shoreline, with the exact early sequence influenced by whether Shadowheart was saved and which origin character is being played.
Entering the Dank Crypt
The beach has a locked ancient door leading into the Dank Crypt. It can be opened with a high Sleight of Hand check, or the party can enter through the Overgrown Ruins instead. The Overgrown Ruins route is the more natural early-game approach because it introduces the bandit encounter and the ruined chapel before descending into the crypt.
The Dank Crypt is not simply another section of open beach. It is a separate ancient temple area containing undead guardians, trapped sarcophagi, the Shrine of Jergal and the encounter that unlocks Withers. Its direct beach door is a connection between areas, not evidence that the entire crypt belongs to Ravaged Beach.

Recommended first route: A practical first circuit is
- 01Search the starting beach. Recruit Shadowheart if she is present, inspect nearby bodies and gather basic equipment.
Recommended first route
- 01Move through the wreckage. Search dead mind flayers and investigate the intellect devourers. Avoid interacting casually with the dying mind flayer until the party is ready for combat.
Recommended first route
- 01Follow the eastern shoreline. Examine the dead fishermen with Speak with Dead if the party has access to the spell or scrolls.
Recommended first route
- 01Check the stone arch. Reach the cartilaginous chest above the ancient-door area using the nearby climbable or jumpable terrain.
Recommended first route
- 01Visit the western beach. Recruit Astarion, collect the Thieves’ Tools and open the locked chest.
Recommended first route
- 01Search the western hidden cache. Investigate the scuffed rock and move it with a sufficiently strong character.
Recommended first route
- 01Proceed to the Overgrown Ruins. Enter the ruins to investigate the chapel and gain access to the Dank Crypt.
Recommended first route
- 01Continue north or east only after checking the beach. The routes towards Roadside Cliffs and Emerald Grove Environs lead into the wider Wilderness and its larger quest network.
Residents, companions and named characters
Named dead characters
These corpses can be relevant to Speak with Dead:
The names are useful for a completion-minded playthrough because their corpses are easy to overlook among the general wreckage.
Other local characters and creatures
There is no established shop district, resident settlement or local governing authority on Ravaged Beach. The area is a disaster site rather than an inhabited village.
---
Enemies and hazards
Intellect devourers
The intellect devourers around the wreck are among the first combat encounters available after the Prologue. They are dangerous to an isolated level-one character but manageable once the party begins to form.
Use the wreckage and terrain to prevent the creatures from surrounding weaker characters. Recruiting Shadowheart before engaging is generally safer than fighting alone.
The dying mind flayer
The dying mind flayer is a dialogue hazard as much as a combat encounter. The interaction can appear to offer an opportunity to help, but careless responses can kill the interacting character and trigger a hostile fight.
Treat the encounter as optional. If the party is low on hit points, has no healing or has not recruited companions, return later.
Environmental hazards
The beach itself has few persistent traps, but the adjoining Dank Crypt contains significant fire, grease and sarcophagus traps. The central trapped sarcophagus can activate vents and wall-mounted gargoyle heads. Disarming it prevents the wider trap sequence from triggering; if the system has already activated, a nearby pillar button can shut it down.

Loot and collectibles
The following directory combines the verified Ravaged Beach entries while excluding the main rewards of the separate Dank Crypt.
Buried chests
The location has buried treasure that requires a shovel or an appropriate discovery sequence. Verified buried chest positions are recorded at:
The contents of buried chests can vary, so they should be treated as treasure placements rather than guaranteed named-item rewards.
Random and variable loot
Do not treat every item visible in the wreckage as a fixed Ravaged Beach reward. Some corpses and containers use randomised or low-value loot tables.
Alchemical ingredients
These ingredients are useful for early alchemy, although the precise recipes available depend on the character’s discovered recipes and alchemy progress.
Literature
The dockside book is a small piece of world-building that links the otherwise ruined fishing area to the wider maritime culture of the Sword Coast.
---
Alchemical ingredients: The beach can provide the following ingredients
| Ingredient | Recorded quantity |
|---|---|
| Balsam | 5 |
| Belladonna | 3 |
| Daggerroot | 1 |
| Dragon Egg Mushroom | 2 |
| Mergrass | 4 |
| Rogue’s Morsel | 2 |
Quests and activities
Daughter of Darkness
This begins through Shadowheart. The quest concerns her mysterious artefact, her past and the role of Shar in her story. Ravaged Beach is only the opening step, but recruiting Shadowheart here is one of the most consequential early decisions because she can remain a central party member throughout the game.
The Pale Elf
This begins when Astarion is encountered on the western beach. His introduction establishes his immediate relationship with the player character and opens his personal questline.
Free Lae’zel
The ordinary early route for Lae’zel occurs away from the beach, but her death during the Prologue can create the special Ravaged Beach corpse state. If present, reviving her here gives the player another way to obtain the companion.
Explore the Ruins
The Overgrown Ruins and Dank Crypt provide the main archaeological and undead content associated with the crash-site area. The crypt includes the Shrine of Jergal and the major Withers encounter, but both are in the separate Dank Crypt area rather than on the open beach itself.
Find a Cure
The player’s search for a cure begins as a broad objective rather than a single Ravaged Beach quest. Early companions, the wreckage and the initial evidence of the parasite all contribute to this progression.
The Githyanki Warrior and The Wizard of Waterdeep
These quests are connected to companions introduced around the opening sequence. Their main objectives continue beyond Ravaged Beach, so the beach functions as an introduction point rather than their complete quest location.

Hidden areas and secrets
Harper cache
On the western beach, drop down the ledges near the water to reach a concealed cache. A Nature check near the scuffed rock reveals signs that it has been moved before. A character with sufficient Strength can move the rock and expose the chest.
Reading the Harper’s Map is worthwhile because it provides a lead towards hidden treasure elsewhere in the Wilderness. This is one of the strongest reasons not to leave immediately after recruiting Astarion.
Cartilaginous chest
A chest sits on a stone arch overlooking the ancient-door area. It can be reached by jumping down from the cliffs or climbing up from the lower approach.
The route is easy to miss because it is above the obvious shoreline path.
Bodies and Speak with Dead
The beach’s bodies are not merely background decoration. Ellie, Francis and Marcus are specifically identified as Speak with Dead targets. Use the spell before moving on if you want to investigate the crash and the local fishing community.
Buried treasure
Several sand-covered treasure points are scattered around the region. Keep a shovel available and watch for perception results. Failing to notice a mound does not necessarily mean the area has no treasure, so return after gaining a character with stronger Perception or after improving the party’s exploration capabilities.
---
Progression changes and missable states
Ravaged Beach is highly dependent on the Prologue’s outcome.
Lae’zel’s corpse state
If Lae’zel dies during the Nautiloid sequence, she may be found dead on Ravaged Beach and can be revived. This is not the normal first encounter for her, so it should be treated as a conditional recovery route.
Origin characters
Different origin characters can produce different dialogue about the location. Wyll, for example, immediately recognises the general setting, while other origins may comment on the river or infer that a settlement must be nearby. These remarks do not create a separate area, but they reinforce that the beach is part of the River Chionthar’s wider inhabited landscape.
Leaving the area
Ravaged Beach does not normally lock the player out of the wider Act One region merely for travelling north. However, progression, companion deaths, long-rest timing and quest outcomes can change later scenes. The safest approach is to recruit the immediately available companions and collect the fixed hidden rewards before pushing deeply into the Wilderness.
