Key takeaways
- Entering the Trail advances the Act One story Several Wilderness quests can be resolved or failed when the party travels to the Mountain Pass route, so finish time-sensitive Grove, goblin, Waukeen’s Rest and Karlach-related business first.
- The region includes three major subareas the outdoor Rosymorn Monastery Trail, the ruined Rosymorn Monastery and Crèche Y’llek. The crèche is reached through the monastery but is a separate interior location.
- Lae’zel is particularly valuable here Her presence changes dialogue, reveals the significance of the githyanki markings and drives Find a Cure, The Githyanki Warrior and the history of Prince Orpheus.
- Explore the monastery before leaving for Act Two It contains the ceremonial-weapon puzzle, the Dawnmaster’s Crest and the route to the Blood of Lathander.
- Do not treat the cable car as mandatory It can be activated with Strength checks, but the cliffs can also be descended on foot. The alternative route is trapped and dangerous around chasms.
- The Shadow-Cursed Lands connection is still available later Returning through the Trail remains possible until the party enters the Shadowfell through the Gauntlet of Shar.
About this guide
Base-game guide. Major spoilers for Act One, Lae’zel’s personal quest, Crèche Y’llek and the Blood of Lathander.
Overview
Rosymorn Monastery Trail is a distinct Act One region in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is part of the Mountain Pass route, but it is not the same location as the Wilderness region named Mountain Pass. The Trail contains the ruined Rosymorn Monastery, the underground Crèche Y’llek, the Trielta Crags waypoint, Lady Esther’s camp, the route towards the Shadow-Cursed Lands and several encounters that connect Act One’s githyanki storyline to Act Two.
The region is easy to underestimate. The outdoor trail is comparatively compact, but its boundaries include several vertical approaches, a ruined monastery with multiple levels, and the extensive githyanki crèche below it. Treating the Trail as merely the path outside the monastery misses most of the region’s important content.
What counts as the Rosymorn Monastery Trail?
The Trail is an Act One region rather than a single outdoor path. Its named locations are:
The game’s regional waypoints are Trielta Crags, Rosymorn Monastery and Crèche Y’llek. The Trail can therefore be entered from different directions, and the order of encounters may change depending on the route taken.
What should not be conflated with it?
The following are neighbouring or connected places, not subareas of the Trail:
This distinction matters because travelling into the Trail is a progression event, while entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands is the transition into Act Two.
---
From the Wilderness Mountain Pass
The most direct route begins at the Mountain Pass transition in the Wilderness. The Trail entrance is around X: -48, Y: -183. Lae’zel may react shortly after arrival if she is present, recognising githyanki markings that point towards a nearby crèche.
This approach places the party on the southern or south-western side of the Trail, near the Trielta Crags area.
From the Goblin Camp
The Trail can also be entered from the Goblin Camp, around X: -100, Y: -204 on the Trail side of the transition. This is useful if the party reaches the Mountain Pass route through the goblin-controlled area rather than the Wilderness road.
The Goblin Camp route is not a separate version of the Trail. It leads into the same region, although certain encounters and the order in which the party sees them can differ.
From the Shadow-Cursed Lands
The western route leads to the Ruined Battlefield in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, around X: -142, Y: -128. The Trail remains accessible from Act Two until the party enters the Shadowfell through the Gauntlet of Shar.
This makes the Trail a useful return route. It is possible to revisit Lady Esther, the monastery and the crèche after arriving in Act Two, provided the relevant NPCs and quests have not been removed by earlier events.
Suggested order of exploration
This order is not mandatory. The Trail’s layout permits several approaches, but doing the monastery exploration before committing to the crèche gives you more context for the area’s religious history and collectibles.
---
A practical first visit is
- 01Enter the Trail and activate Trielta Crags.
- 02Speak with Lady Esther before descending towards the monastery.
- 03Explore the outdoor path and resolve the undead encounter.
- 04Activate the Rosymorn Monastery waypoint.
- 05Explore the monastery’s exterior, upper level and roof.
- 06Complete the ceremonial-weapon puzzle.
- 07Enter Crèche Y’llek and deal with Lae’zel’s storyline.
- 08Finish the Blood of Lathander sequence.
- 09Leave for the Shadow-Cursed Lands only after checking your Act One checklist.
Trielta Crags and the Lathander statue
The Trielta Crags waypoint stands near a statue of a man with raised hands. A Religion check can identify the statue and its plaque as evidence that the monastery was consecrated to Lathander, the Morninglord. Lady Esther’s camp lies down a smaller path to the east.
Lady Esther’s camp
Lady Esther is an expedition member working for the Society of Brilliance. She is looking for a githyanki egg for an experiment intended to alter githyanki behaviour through selective upbringing. Her request begins Steal a Githyanki Egg.
Esther is also a merchant regardless of whether the party accepts her request. Her stock includes useful equipment such as:
She can also be confronted about using an Owlbear Egg in place of a githyanki egg. The dialogue requires difficult ability checks and does not require the owlbear egg to be physically carried at that moment if it has been stored at camp.
Important choice
The githyanki egg quest has consequences beyond a simple delivery. Esther’s employer is the Society of Brilliance, and the purpose of the experiment is morally troubling. Players who want to preserve the egg or avoid its later consequences should not hand it over casually.
Undead battlefield
Near X: -91, Y: -119, the party encounters:
The fight begins when the creatures notice the party. The area is difficult to bypass when travelling between the Trail and the Shadow-Cursed Lands because the enemy group occupies the route.
The corpses include githyanki youths and Absolute cultists. Speaking with the dead on the corpse of an Absolute zealot reveals that he summoned the undead to delay pursuit while an Absolute raiding party attacked Waukeen’s Rest and attempted to capture Ulder Ravengard. The body can also provide a Missive From Moonrise along with ordinary equipment.
The scene also shows the Shadow Curse beginning to affect the landscape. A ruined bridge, withered vegetation and dead animals foreshadow the conditions beyond the western exit.
After the battle, search
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| The nearby Opulent Chest on the cart. | — |
| The buried chest at approximately X | -119, Y: -138, revealed with a DC 10 Survival check. |
Cable car and cliff descent
The cable-car station is around X: -44, Y: -74. The nearby wheel requires a DC 15 Strength check to unblock. Each party member can attempt the check, so a strong character or a suitable temporary buff can make the process straightforward. Once repaired, the cable car reaches the landing west of the monastery, around X: -10, Y: 6.
If the party cannot operate the wheel, it can descend the cliffs by the stairs to the west. This route contains several Repulsion Mines. They may not deal much direct damage, but their push effect can send characters into chasms. Use turn-based mode, spread the party out and disarm or avoid mines where possible.
A campsite near the stairs contains an Elegant Chest with:
At the lower landing, near a broken Lathander effigy, players can find:
---
Rosymorn Monastery is the ruined religious complex above the Trail. It is divided into the ground level, upper level and roof, with Crèche Y’llek below. The monastery can only be approached from the Trail.
When the party first approaches the front doors, a cutscene shows githyanki soldiers escorting halfling cultists into the crèche. Raider Add’ath kills Corliss Undertump when she tries to flee. If the party allows the group to proceed, the githyanki lock the monastery gates behind them. Attacking them leaves the gates open, although alternative routes into the building remain available.
The Dream Guardian also warns the player character against investigating the crèche.
Entering the ruined building
The monastery is designed around vertical traversal rather than a single front-door route. Players can:
The upper level can be reached by climbing the roots around X: 36, Y: 24, which leads towards the gremishka-infested library, or by descending the rubble near X: 51, Y: 6 and jumping east towards roots at X: 106, Y: -4.
Gremishka den
The former library is occupied by a group of invisible gremishkas. A DC 15 Arcana check can reveal that these creatures are unusually dangerous around magic. Nine gremishkas wait in ambush.
Because gremishkas react badly to magical effects, consider using ordinary weapon attacks where practical. Avoid beginning the encounter with unnecessary area spells if you want to limit the chaos.
Eastern upper level
The eastern side contains several pieces of the monastery’s history and equipment for the Blood of Lathander puzzle.
At X: 123, Y: -6 is the grave of Dawnmaster Askell Stockhold. The coffin contains a note explaining that the Dawnmaster was buried with a ceremonial mace, but the grave now contains a Rusty Mace instead. This mace can function as the mace component for the puzzle.
A damaged wall near X: 115, Y: 22 leads to a ruined staircase. A DC 15 Perception check can reveal a crumbling wall near X: 103, Y: 38. Behind it is a chamber containing an active Guardian of Faith spell.
The Guardian attacks when the party loots certain skeletons or takes the Ceremonial Battleaxe. It does not react to every item in the room, so careful looting can avoid an unnecessary fight. The chamber also contains a Gilded Chest and a door protected by the Morninglord’s Bulwark.
Dawnmasters’ Memorial
The memorial is the centre of the ceremonial-weapon puzzle. The stained glass identifies the weapons associated with the four Dawnmasters:
The exact ceremonial weapons can be found around the monastery, but the puzzle accepts generic weapons of the correct type. The Rusty Mace from Dawnmaster Stockhold’s grave can substitute for the ceremonial mace, for example. The weapon must be placed or thrown onto the correct altar. Incorrect weapons may bounce back and knock a character prone.
Ceremonial weapon locations
Solving the puzzle reveals the Dawnmaster’s Crest, which is required for the safest completion of the Blood of Lathander sequence.
Dawnmasters’ Memorial
Ceremonial weapon locations
| Weapon | Typical source |
|---|---|
| Ceremonial Longsword | Already placed on an altar in the memorial |
| Ceremonial Mace | Kobold looter area, or substitute with the Rusty Mace from Stockhold’s grave |
| Ceremonial Battleaxe | Guardian of Faith chamber |
| Ceremonial Warhammer | Giant eagle nest on the roof |
Roof and giant eagle nest
The roof is reached by knotted roots near X: 57, Y: 52 or X: 91, Y: 40. The second route leads close to the giant eagle nest and should be approached carefully. Twisting vines can entangle characters on the roof.
If Speak with Animals is active, the elder eagle can be addressed. The birds may be placated temporarily, but moving closer afterwards can still trigger combat. If the fight begins, the Ancient Giant Eagle calls reinforcements, adding three more Giant Eagles. The encounter is tied to Reclaim the Blue Jay’s Nest.
Blood of Lathander
The monastery contains the puzzle route for Find the Blood of Lathander, which ultimately leads to the legendary Blood of Lathander mace.
The Crest is not merely an optional reward. It helps prevent the monastery’s destructive security mechanism from causing the worst outcome when the weapon is removed. The Blood of Lathander quest is one of the strongest reasons to explore the monastery before leaving the region.
---
Crèche Y’llek is the githyanki facility beneath the monastery. Although the crèche is listed as a location within the Trail, it is a distinct interior area with its own waypoint, residents, vendor, training spaces, infirmary and quest progression.
Recommended procedure
- 01Collect the ceremonial weapons around the monastery.
- 02Reach the Dawnmasters’ Memorial.
- 03Place the weapons on the correct four altars according to the stained-glass depiction.
- 04Take the Dawnmaster’s Crest.
- 05Enter the monastery’s lower areas and follow the route into the hidden weapon chamber.
- 06Use the Crest when the mechanism requests it.
Lae’zel and the githyanki storyline
Bring Lae’zel if possible. Her presence changes conversations throughout the crèche and allows the party to experience the storyline as her personal crisis rather than as an external investigation.
The githyanki may initially permit the party to move through the facility, particularly if the party has the expected artefact-related connection. However, the crèche is not a neutral safe zone. Dialogue choices, the party’s treatment of the zaith’isk, the artefact and Vlaakith’s commands can turn its inhabitants hostile.
A’jak’nir Jeera
A’jak’nir Jeera is the principal trader in the crèche. Her stock includes several notable githyanki and Undermountain-themed items, including:
The exact trading state depends on progression, dialogue and whether the party remains on good terms with the crèche. Buy or steal anything important before triggering an open confrontation.
A’jak’nir Jeera
Zaith’isk
The zaith’isk is presented as a cure for the tadpole, but its use is bound to the crèche’s wider plot and can have serious consequences. Lae’zel strongly wants to undergo the procedure. The outcome depends on dialogue, ability checks and who occupies the machine.
The scene is important even if the party does not intend to follow the githyanki route, because it affects Lae’zel’s trust, her understanding of Vlaakith and later decisions connected to the crèche.
Hatchery and githyanki egg
The hatchery is the destination for Steal a Githyanki Egg. The egg is not simply a freely available container item. Reaching it requires navigating the hatchery, dealing with its caretaker and deciding how to handle the environmental hazards and githyanki response.
The party can later return the egg to Lady Esther, keep it, or resolve the situation through alternative dialogue. The moral and narrative consequences make this one of the Trail’s most consequential side activities.
---
The regional character category covers the monastery and Crèche Y’llek together and contains 64 named pages. The following directory preserves those verified names, while separating major quest characters from minor githyanki and creatures.
Named creatures and special entities
Some of these names belong to minor, non-essential residents or entities whose role depends on the party’s route, dialogue and state of the crèche. The category groups them together because the game treats the monastery and crèche as one regional character set, but they should not be assumed to occupy the same subarea at the same time.
---
Githyanki authority
The crèche is controlled by githyanki military and religious authority. Its members are not ordinary civilians, and the party’s presence is judged through the prism of Vlaakith’s orders, the artefact and Lae’zel’s status.
The monastery’s outer gate is also controlled by githyanki soldiers. Allowing the halfling cultists to be taken inside causes the gates to close, while attacking the escort leaves them open. Alternative routes remain available through the ruined architecture.
Society of Brilliance
Lady Esther represents the Society of Brilliance. The organisation is not physically established on the Trail as a normal business or settlement, but its egg-related mission makes it a significant external faction in the region.
Absolute cultists
Absolute agents appear mainly through corpses and the story of the undead battlefield. Their presence links the Trail to the attack on Waukeen’s Rest and the broader Moonrise Towers operation.
Environmental security
These are not all part of the same active faction. Some are magical remnants of the old monastery, while others are modern traps or battlefield hazards.
---
Important fixed items
Crèche Y’llek
The Trail and monastery pages distinguish fixed rewards from random containers. Gremishka nests, for example, contain random uncommon scrolls and potions rather than a single guaranteed named item.
---
Regional quests
The regional quest list also records links to wider Act One quests whose states can change when the party travels to the Mountain Pass.
Regional quests
Time-sensitive progression
Travelling to the Trail advances the story and can affect:
The Trail is therefore best treated as late Act One content. The game does not require every Wilderness area to be cleared first, but players should finish any quests whose outcomes depend on the Grove, goblin conflict, Waukeen’s Rest or unresolved companion recruitment before committing to the route.
---
Before leaving the region, check that you have:
---
Time-sensitive progression
Is Rosymorn Monastery Trail part of the Mountain Pass?
It is part of the Mountain Pass route, but the Trail itself is a separate Act One region and is not part of the Wilderness. The Wilderness contains the Mountain Pass transition that leads into it.
Do I have to use the cable car?
No. The cable car is optional. If the Strength checks fail, the party can descend the cliffs by another route, although the alternative path contains repulsion mines and dangerous chasms.
Should Lae’zel be in the party?
Strongly recommended. The crèche is central to her story, and her presence changes dialogue and quest progression. The Trail also contains githyanki markings that she can interpret when the party enters.
Can I return after entering Act Two?
Yes, the Trail remains reachable from the Shadow-Cursed Lands until the party enters the Shadowfell through the Gauntlet of Shar. However, NPCs, vendors and quests can change due to progression, so completing the region before advancing is safer.
Is Crèche Y’llek inside the monastery?
It is beneath the monastery and accessed through it, but it is treated as a distinct location with its own waypoint and interior layout. The regional hierarchy is best understood as Trail, monastery and crèche rather than treating the whole area as one building.
