Key takeaways
- The Shattered Sanctum is the temple interior, not the whole Goblin Camp The outer courtyard, Booze Tub and Goblin Camp traders are separate areas.
- Its principal subareas are the main nave, Gut’s chapel, Brakkal’s cage, the spider pit, the torture chamber, the Zhentarim storeroom, the Worg Pens approach and Minthara’s headquarters.
- The three central goblin leaders are Priestess Gut, Dror Ragzlin and Minthara Killing all three supports the grove-defence route; siding with Minthara begins the grove raid route.
- Halsin is held in the Worg Pens, which are entered from the eastern side of the sanctum. The Worg Pens are a connected child area, not merely another room of the nave.
- The Defiled Temple is a separate secluded section of the former Selûnite temple It contains Gut’s private rooms, the Moon Tile puzzle and the route to the Underdark.
- Do not kill Dror Ragzlin casually if you still want to trade or speak freely with the goblins. His death commonly causes the sanctum and wider goblin forces to turn hostile.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act One quests, companion recruitment and approval consequences, the goblin leaders, the Underdark entrance and several missable items. It assumes the base game of Baldur’s Gate 3, without mods or overhaul content.
Overview
The Shattered Sanctum is the inner temple of the Goblin Camp in Act One. It is not the same location as the outer Goblin Camp, the Worg Pens or the Defiled Temple, although all four areas are closely connected and are often described together in general walkthroughs. In the game’s location hierarchy, the Shattered Sanctum is an interior location in the Wilderness, entered from the Goblin Camp and connected to the Worg Pens and Defiled Temple.
The sanctum occupies the ruined interior of a former temple dedicated to Selûne. The goblins have converted its nave, chambers and galleries into a headquarters for the Absolute’s cult. It contains three important leaders, a temporary Zhentarim trading post, a torture chamber, a hidden prison, a spider pit, an entrance to the Worg Pens and one of Act One’s routes into the Underdark.
It is also one of the most consequence-heavy locations in the early game. You can infiltrate it peacefully, manipulate its inhabitants, rescue prisoners, kill or spare key leaders, recruit or lose potential allies, obtain permanent bonuses and decide whether to support or destroy the goblin assault on the Emerald Grove.
---
1. Heavy Oak Doors
The main entrance is the Heavy Oak Door at the northern end of the outer Goblin Camp. It is guarded by Warrior Trinzas. You can pass through dialogue, including drow-specific options, Tadpole Powers or ordinary persuasion, or begin a fight.
A fight at this checkpoint can alert nearby goblins. If the alarm spreads, many goblins in the camp may become hostile, removing peaceful dialogue and trading opportunities.
2. Passageway
A side passage enters the sanctum near its south-eastern section. It is protected by three Blast Mines, including poison-cloud and explosive variants. This is a useful route for a party that wants to avoid the main checkpoint, but it is dangerous if the group lacks trap-disarm tools or enough room to manoeuvre.
3. Cracked Wall
The upper level of the outer camp contains a cracked wall leading into the sanctum. The wall is sturdy and resistant or immune to most damage types, but force damage and suitable explosives are effective. Nearby sleeping guards can be disturbed by the noise, so Silence, stealth or careful timing can help preserve the element of surprise.
4. Underdark door
The Selûnite Outpost in the Underdark has a door leading towards the temple, but this route cannot normally be opened from the Underdark side. It must first be unlocked from inside the Shattered Sanctum, either through the Moon Tile puzzle or its hidden lever.
---
Diplomatic infiltration
This is the safest route if you want to speak to as many NPCs as possible before deciding what to do.
This order preserves the most dialogue and makes it easier to isolate fights.
Diplomatic infiltration: steps
- 01Enter through the Heavy Oak Doors.
- 02Speak to the guards rather than attacking.
- 03Visit the main altar and speak with Priestess Gut.
- 04Explore the eastern rooms, including Volo’s cage and the Loviatar shrine.
- 05Visit Roah Moonglow before starting any large fight.
- 06Enter the Worg Pens and rescue or speak with Halsin.
- 07Deal with Minthara, Dror Ragzlin and Gut separately.
- 08Explore the Defiled Temple and solve the Moon Tile puzzle.
- 09Return to collect missed loot and complete prisoner-related interactions.
Stealth and surgical combat
If you intend to clear the location without fighting the entire camp:
Stealth and surgical combat: steps
- 01Enter through the upper cracked wall or side passage.
- 02Avoid striking the war drums. Goblin drums can escalate a local fight into a wider alarm.
- 03Free Volo and deal with isolated guards first.
- 04Kill Priestess Gut in her chapel before she can call for help.
- 05Use the rafters and upper galleries to gain high ground.
- 06Deal with Minthara while her forces are isolated.
- 07Kill Dror Ragzlin last, since his death is the most likely to make the remaining goblins openly hostile.
- 08Search the treasure area behind Ragzlin’s throne.
Fast Halsin rescue
As long as the alarm has not been raised, the goblins may allow the party through the eastern doors because they assume the characters are True Souls or accepted visitors.
---
If the immediate objective is Halsin
- 01Enter the sanctum by any route.
- 02Go east towards the ornate doors.
- 03Enter the Worg Pens.
- 04Speak to the goblins or begin the rescue.
- 05Free Halsin and decide whether to leave immediately or continue clearing the camp.
Main nave and altar of the Absolute
The central nave is the sanctum’s main hall. Priestess Gut initially stands near the wooden dais and altar, where goblins come to receive the Brand of the Absolute. A party member can also accept the brand.
Speaking with Gut can reveal that she is taking orders from one of the Absolute’s Chosen. If the player character uses their tadpole to probe deeper, Gut offers to continue the conversation in her private chapel. This moves her away from the main hall and creates a safer opportunity to isolate her.
The main nave is also a dangerous place to start a fight. Nearby goblins, war drums and connected rooms can turn a single confrontation into a location-wide battle.
Gut’s chapel
Gut’s chapel lies to the west of the main nave. It contains her workroom, private altar and the entrance towards the Defiled Temple.
Gut’s attempted treatment is a trap. If the player agrees to drink her potion, the character may be rendered unconscious and transferred to the Defiled Temple. Refusing the potion allows a controlled confrontation. Gut can be killed safely if she is prevented from calling for help. Silence is especially useful because allowing her to summon assistance or leave the room can make the whole temple hostile.
Spider pit
Behind Gut’s shrine, stairs lead down to a cave-like pit containing a larger and a smaller giant spider. The pit has a lever-operated iron grate and a passage blocked by destructible Cracked Tiles.
Two goblins attempt to throw Smythin into the pit. With careful timing, the party can save him. This grants the Folk Hero inspiration event Saved by a Thread.
The larger spider can be persuaded to attack the goblins instead of the party. Opening the grate while concealed can turn the spiders against the goblins, although an unprepared opening may make everyone hostile. The smaller spider can be persuaded not to attack, but it does not offer the same goblin-targeting dialogue.
The rear passage connects to the prison cell in the Defiled Temple.
Brakkal’s cage
Brakkal is a goblin priest of Maglubiyet, imprisoned because he refuses to abandon his old deity for the Absolute. His cage hangs over a chasm between Gut’s chapel and Dror Ragzlin’s area.
A Religion check can reveal information about Maglubiyet. The cage can be opened by disarming and lockpicking it or by using the key held by Warrior Clack. Freeing Brakkal makes his guards hostile, but Brakkal himself remains neutral and leaves rather than becoming an ally.
For an Acolyte character, speaking with Brakkal before opening the cage is important. Freeing him without first speaking to him prevents the Saving the Heretic inspiration event.
Zhentarim storeroom
The south-eastern side of the sanctum contains a Zhentarim trading position. Roah Moonglow operates here with Erna and Yerle as bodyguards.
Roah is a functional trader, not merely scenery. She sells useful equipment and can later reappear at Moonrise Towers if she survives. Her guards generally side with the goblins if combat breaks out.
Behind the trading area is a storeroom containing six Firewine Barrels and six Smokepowder Barrels. It also contains crates with grenades and weapon coatings, plus a locked chest requiring a high Sleight of Hand check. The storeroom can be reached by fighting through the guards, jumping down from the rafters or using a small rocky crevice from the Defiled Temple.
Torture chamber
The torture chamber contains a prisoner being interrogated by the goblins. The area is tied to the rescue of Liam and to a hidden route towards the outer camp.
If Liam is freed, he runs to the far end of the room and jumps across a small chasm, revealing a hidden tunnel. The tunnel can be opened from inside the sanctum and later functions as a covert route into the temple. The outer section is trapped with three Blast Mines.
“Pigeon” cage
Gribbo keeps Volo imprisoned in a cage. The party can persuade Gribbo to release him or obtain the key through dialogue and ability checks.
Once freed, Volo uses a Potion of Invisibility and travels to the party’s camp. His rescue grants different inspiration events depending on the party’s backgrounds, including A Man of Many Talents for a Noble and The Bard with Nine Lives for a Folk Hero after speaking with him at camp.
Loviatar’s shrine
The shrine is a makeshift chamber dedicated to Loviatar, occupied by her cleric Abdirak. He offers a ritual of pain that can grant the permanent blessing Loviatar’s Love.
The ritual uses a combination of Intimidation, Performance and Constitution checks. It is one of the location’s most valuable non-combat rewards. Abdirak also carries Loviatar’s Scourge, while a Ritual Axe and Ritual Dagger sit nearby.
Dror Ragzlin’s throne room
The northern hall belongs to Dror Ragzlin, the hobgoblin warlord. He sits on a wooden dais while goblins listen to his speeches. Kagran and Narvass patrol the area as non-goblin bodyguards.
A dead mind flayer lies before the dais. Ragzlin uses Speak with Dead to interrogate it, and the party can participate in the questioning. A successful Wisdom check can allow the player character to influence the ritual. If Ragzlin performs the spell himself, the party risks being revealed as the mind flayer’s killers. A later Persuasion check may be needed to avoid immediate hostility.
The room has ladders to upper rafters, which are valuable for ranged attacks and ambushes. Behind a locked gate is a treasure area containing the Gloves of the Growling Underdog, Springstep Boots and Infernal Iron.
Minthara’s headquarters
Minthara occupies the northern-eastern portion of the sanctum. She is a drow leader of the Absolute’s forces and is central to the grove raid route.
The party can discuss the Emerald Grove with her, betray the grove, or attack her. Paladins should be especially careful: revealing the grove’s location to Minthara, or allowing her to learn it by reading the player character’s mind, is an oathbreaking action for paladins of any oath.
Minthara carries several notable items, including Boots of Striding, Spidersilk Armour and Xyanyde. A gilded chest behind her makeshift study contains The Watersparkers. Her table holds a War Map that can reveal a buried treasure location in the Forest; that stash contains Fleetfingers.
Named entries
---
Conditional or associated characters
The exact presence and behaviour of several characters depends on prior choices, whether the alarm has been raised and whether the party has started or resolved related quests.
Visitors and faction representatives
The Zhentarim are not simply another branch of the goblin faction. Roah is operating as a trader and business partner, and her group may leave or become hostile depending on how the party handles the sanctum.
---
Rescue Halsin
Halsin is held in the Worg Pens, reached through the eastern side of the sanctum. The rescue can be attempted openly, stealthily or after the party member is captured and taken to the prison.
Halsin’s rescue is the central practical objective for many grove-defence playthroughs. Once the prisoner situation is resolved, the party can decide whether to kill the goblin leaders, leave the camp or continue exploring.
Ask the Goblin Priestess for Help
Gut presents herself as someone who can help remove the tadpole. Her solution is a trap involving a potion, unconsciousness and imprisonment. It is possible to escape through ability checks, wait for outside intervention or use the connected passages.
This quest is useful for role-playing and information, but the apparent cure is not genuine.
Defeat the Goblins
The sanctum contains all three major goblin leaders:
Killing Minthara, Ragzlin and Gut grants the Soldier inspiration event A Headless Horde. Minthara can also be knocked unconscious in a non-lethal outcome where appropriate.
Raid the Grove
Minthara can be told where the Emerald Grove is, either directly or through mind-reading. This begins the route towards the goblin assault and has severe consequences for the grove’s residents and several companion-related outcomes.
Rescue Volo
Freeing Volo from Gribbo’s cage sends him to camp, where he becomes available for later events.
Save Sazza
Sazza may be present depending on the party’s earlier actions. The sanctum is one stage of her rescue sequence and can lead to a reward from Minthara, including Assassin’s Touch, if the relevant conditions are met.
Find the Nightsong
The Defiled Temple’s Selûnite clues and Moon Tile puzzle advance the Find the Nightsong quest. The puzzle opens the route to the Underdark and the Selûnite Outpost.
---
The Defiled Temple can be entered from Gut’s chapel through a locked door, from the spider pit through the prison cell or through a small hole connected to the Zhentarim storeroom. The chapel door can be opened with the Priestess’ Key or by lockpicking.
Inside are Gut’s bedroom and prison cell, guarded by the ogre Polma. If the party falls into Gut’s trap, the imprisoned character can attempt to escape. Under some conditions, Korrilla appears and kills Gut and Polma before releasing the character.
The temple contains a Selûnite Journal that provides a clue for the Moon Tile puzzle. The puzzle depicts phases of the moon. One seven-move solution is:
Alternatively, a hidden lever can bypass the puzzle after successful Perception and Sleight of Hand checks. Solving the puzzle grants the Sage inspiration event The Phases Unfold; using the lever opens the route but does not grant that inspiration in the same way.
The opened passage descends into the Underdark and ends at the Selûnite Outpost.

Defiled Temple loot
The Amulet of Misty Step is in a gilded chest in Gut’s room. The Selûnite Journal is in a cabinet nearby and helps explain the Moon Tile puzzle.
Permanent and inspirational rewards
Some inspiration rewards require particular backgrounds, dialogue order or non-lethal solutions. For example, Brakkal must be spoken to before being freed if an Acolyte character is to receive the relevant inspiration.
---
War drums
War Drums are scattered through the sanctum. Goblins playing them can spread an alarm and turn the wider population hostile. If combat begins near a drum, destroy or silence it before the enemy gets a turn.
Alarm escalation
The most important security rule is to isolate fights. A battle near the entrance, Ragzlin’s room or the main nave can bring in nearby guards and leaders. Killing a major leader may also change the attitude of the entire complex.
Blast Mines
Mines appear on the side entrance and the hidden passage outside the torture chamber. They include explosive and poison-cloud variants. Bring a character with Sleight of Hand proficiency, use ranged attacks from a safe position or find another route.
High ground
The upper galleries and rafters around Ragzlin’s throne room and the western chambers provide strong positions for archers and spellcasters. They also create alternative routes around guarded doors.
Chasms and falls
Brakkal’s cage, the spider pit and Gut’s prison escape route contain gaps and drops. Jumping or breaking the cracked floor can cause fall damage, and characters with poor mobility may become separated from the group.

Before leaving the Shattered Sanctum, check whether you have:
---
Is the Goblin Camp the same as the Shattered Sanctum?
No. The Goblin Camp is the outdoor settlement and courtyard. The Shattered Sanctum is the interior temple. They are connected but have separate boundaries, encounters and named entries.
Are the Worg Pens part of the Shattered Sanctum?
They are a directly connected child area. Halsin is in the Worg Pens, not in the central nave itself.
Is the Defiled Temple part of the sanctum?
It is a secluded connected section of the same former Selûnite temple, but it is treated as its own location with separate access, loot and the Moon Tile puzzle.
Should I kill Priestess Gut immediately?
You can, and doing so in her chapel while preventing her from calling for help is one of the safest ways to remove her. Killing her in the main hall is more likely to trigger a wider battle.
Should I kill Dror Ragzlin first?
Usually not if you still want to trade or speak peacefully with other goblins. His death is a major escalation point. Many players leave him until they have completed dialogue, trading and rescue objectives.
Can Roah Moonglow appear later?
If she survives the sanctum, she can reappear in Moonrise Towers in Act Two.
Can the Moon Tile puzzle be skipped?
Yes. A hidden lever can open the route after appropriate Perception and Sleight of Hand checks. Solving the puzzle is preferable if you want the associated Sage inspiration.

This guide treats the base-game Shattered Sanctum as the interior Goblin Camp temple and separates the Goblin Camp, Worg Pens and Defiled Temple where the game and available reference pages distinguish them. The major named residents, subareas, quest links and notable loot are drawn primarily from the current bg3.wiki location pages and the related quest and child-area pages.
A fully exhaustive directory of every unnamed goblin, container, random scroll, ordinary weapon, decorative object and procedural combatant would require direct inspection of the game files or a room-by-room interactive map. The named directories above therefore cover verified named entries and notable fixed content, but do not claim to enumerate every unnamed NPC or random container.
