South Span Checkpoint

The South Span Checkpoint is the fortified southern entrance from Rivington into Wyrm’s Crossing in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The normal route through the checkpoint costs 200 gold and leads to a Steel Watch inspection.
  • The inspection’s outcome depends heavily on whether the party has opposed the Absolute, whether the Ironhands survived, and which character speaks to the Steel Watcher.
  • If the deep gnomes are alive, Nimble, and possibly Laridda, can intervene with a Flashblinder and disable the automaton.
  • Karlach can bypass the confrontation if she is the character scanned, because the Steel Watcher recognises her infernal engine as related to a prototype Steel Watcher.
  • The checkpoint can also be bypassed by stealth, jumping, teleportation or flight, but non-standard entry may count as trespassing or trigger guard hostility.
  • The inner towers contain potions, an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength, arrows, camp supplies, random scrolls, gold and dyes. Most of this loot is marked as stolen or restricted property.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Three progression, the South Span Checkpoint’s Steel Watch inspection, possible arrests and fights, the Ironhands’ intervention, and loot inside the checkpoint towers.

Overview

The South Span Checkpoint is the fortified southern entrance from Rivington into Wyrm’s Crossing in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not the whole of Wyrm’s Crossing, nor does it include nearby locations such as Fraygo’s Flophouse, Sword Coast Couriers or the Western Beach. The checkpoint is a compact but important transition area: it controls the main road north, introduces the city’s exclusionary wartime security system, and can become an early Act Three confrontation depending on what happened in Acts One and Two.

The checkpoint is therefore best understood as a border facility and scripted access encounter, rather than a conventional dungeon or settlement.

The location has two functional sections

  1. 01
The outer checkpoint, on the Rivington side, where Gauntlet Edwynna demands an admission fee and the Steel Watcher scans the party.
  2. 02
The inner ramparts, accessible once the party reaches Wyrm’s Crossing, containing Flaming Fist guards, two wooden towers and several containers with minor loot.

Boundaries and hierarchy

The checkpoint lies on the road separating the southern settlement of Rivington from Wyrm’s Crossing. In the game’s location hierarchy, it is an individual location within the broader Rivington area, while Wyrm’s Crossing is the connected area on the far side of the gate. It is not a subarea of the Lower City, and entering the checkpoint does not by itself mean that the party has reached the Lower City proper.

Nearby but separate

The following places should not be merged into the checkpoint:

Sword Coast Couriers is south of the checkpoint, while the Western Beach is an unnamed coastal area reached by descending paths from either side of the checkpoint. Fraygo’s Flophouse is on the Wyrm’s Crossing side, north of the ramparts.

The outer checkpoint

Approaching from Rivington, the party reaches a broad wooden gate and rampart structure. A smaller Flaming Fist post stands before the main fortification. Refugee families are stopped here and told that outsiders are not permitted to enter Baldur’s Gate.

The checkpoint’s visual design communicates its purpose clearly. It is not simply a bridge tollbooth. It is a militarised immigration and surveillance station, with the Flaming Fist handling human authority and a Steel Watcher enforcing Gortash’s security regime.

Gauntlet Edwynna leads the guards on the Rivington side. She explains that refugees are barred from entry, but accepts 200 gold as proof that the party can support itself. After this payment, she directs the party towards the Steel Watcher.

The inner ramparts

The interior of the checkpoint becomes accessible after the party has entered Wyrm’s Crossing. Several Flaming Fist guards remain inside, and Manip Falcäo may be found either around the eastern rampart or pursuing the deep gnomes, depending on the party’s earlier actions.

Two wooden towers flank the gate. Each tower has an entrance from the Wyrm’s Crossing side. The towers contain restricted containers and loose supplies rather than a major treasure cache.

The towers also contain various potions, an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength, random arrows and camp supplies. These items are red-outlined, so taking them is treated as stealing if witnessed.

Standard route: pay Edwynna

Paying Edwynna does not guarantee a peaceful entry. It only satisfies the first stage of the checkpoint’s procedure. The Steel Watcher then determines whether the party is allowed through, confronted, arrested or assisted by outside allies.

The most direct route is

  1. 01
    Approach the checkpoint from Rivington.
  2. 02
    Speak with Gauntlet Edwynna.
  3. 03
    Pay the 200-gold admission fee.
  4. 04
Approach the Steel Watcher when instructed.
  5. 05
Resolve the inspection according to the party’s previous choices.

Ironhands intervention

If Wulbren Bongle and the other deep gnomes survived the earlier acts, the checkpoint can develop differently. Nimble, and potentially Laridda, appear with a Flashblinder bomb and disable the Steel Watcher. This allows the party to enter without having to resolve the normal hostile inspection.

After the intervention, the gnomes flee towards Angleiron’s Cellar, while the Steel Watcher’s optical circuits are overloaded. The checkpoint can consequently lose its ability to perform further scans. This outcome is tied to the survival and later actions of the Ironhands, so it is not a universal event.

Karlach’s special route

If Karlach is the character who interacts with the Steel Watcher, the automaton can recognise the infernal engine in her chest as related to the technology used in a malfunctioning prototype Steel Watcher. It directs her towards the Steel Watch Foundry, allowing her to bypass the normal hostile scan outcome.

This is a character-specific progression variation. If another party member speaks to the automaton first, the Karlach-specific dialogue may not occur in the same way.

Arrest route

If the Ironhands cannot intervene, the party may accept imprisonment in Wyrm’s Rock Prison. This is an alternative to fighting the guards, but it changes the immediate sequence and may separate the party from some inventory.

A practical warning concerns Necromancy of Thay. The book is bound to the character who has read it and may be placed in prison evidence or equipment containers after arrest. Reports associated with this encounter describe cases in which players temporarily or effectively lose access to the book, so avoid accepting arrest while carrying important quest-bound items unless you are prepared to retrieve your belongings.

Fighting through

The party can refuse the procedure, attack the guards or turn hostile during the inspection. This makes the checkpoint a combat encounter against Flaming Fist forces and the Steel Watcher.

This approach is possible, but it can have broader consequences:

The exact oath consequences depend on the paladin subclass and the action taken. The checkpoint’s associated guide specifically records possible oathbreaking concerns for Crown paladins who evade arrest or refuse the scan, and for Ancients, Devotion and Vengeance paladins who accept Manip Falcäo’s request to deal with the gnomes. Treat these interactions carefully if maintaining an oath is important.

Stealth and movement bypasses

The gate is not the only way through.

Invisibility

A character can walk through while invisible. This may still count as trespassing rather than legitimate passage. If the guards detect the party, the result can be imprisonment or combat.

Illithid domination

The Steel Watcher can potentially be forced to stand down with a successful DC 20 Wisdom check using an illithid-based dialogue option. This is a specific dialogue solution rather than a general guarantee that all mind-related abilities will work.

Jumping and movement abilities

The gate can be bypassed from the rocky cliff around X: 34, Y: 47 by using jumps or movement abilities such as:

A Heavy Chest can be found around X: 32, Y: 50 on the route. These coordinates are useful as an orientation aid, but the route remains dependent on party movement range, camera positioning and current access to movement abilities.

Once the party has reached Wyrm’s Crossing, the guards generally allow movement back and forth even if the initial checkpoint conversation was never completed. This makes a bypass useful for exploration, although it does not necessarily resolve the checkpoint’s story state.

The checkpoint is run by the Flaming Fist, operating under the political and military order surrounding Lord Gortash’s rule. Its guards are not merely protecting a bridge. They are enforcing a policy that excludes refugees and subjects arrivals to Steel Watch surveillance.

The party’s treatment reflects earlier choices. Characters associated with resistance to the Absolute may be identified as enemies of the people and enemies of the Absolute. The Steel Watcher’s line about special treatment is one of the clearest indications that the checkpoint is already connected to Gortash’s wider surveillance network.

The refugees outside the checkpoint also provide important context. Fist Kepso and Fist Silena express contempt towards outsiders and refugees, demonstrating that the checkpoint’s policy is enforced socially as well as administratively.

Jumping and movement abilities: The checkpoint’s security system has three layers

  1. 01
Gate questioning, handled by Edwynna and the Flaming Fist.
  2. 02
Payment and identity justification, represented by the 200-gold fee and questions about the party’s business.
  3. 03
Automated inspection, performed by the Steel Watcher.

Flaming Fist and security personnel

These characters are associated with the checkpoint’s garrison or patrol:

Gauntlet Edwynna

Edwynna commands the Rivington-side guard detail. She is the first major checkpoint authority encountered and demands the 200-gold admission fee before directing the party to the Steel Watcher.

If attacked, she can drop a Warhammer +2, making her one of the checkpoint’s few potentially significant equipment sources. This is not a peaceful reward and requires fighting or otherwise killing her.

Manip Falcäo

Falcäo commands the Flaming Fist personnel on the inner side. If the Ironhands have intervened, he may pursue them along the eastern scaffolds and ask the party to solve his “pest problem”. Accepting this request can produce background inspiration for criminal and soldier characters, but it can also conflict with several paladin oaths.

Steel Watcher

The Steel Watcher is the checkpoint’s automated inspection unit. It is central to the location’s progression and can:

Civilians and refugees

They are associated with the refugee families gathered outside the gate. Their presence reinforces that the checkpoint is restricting ordinary movement into the city rather than only screening adventurers.

Deep gnomes

The deep gnomes who may appear here are:

Their appearance depends on the Ironhands’ survival and progression. They are not permanent checkpoint residents. They are story-associated visitors whose intervention can change the Steel Watch inspection.

Fixed or semi-fixed loot

Most tower supplies are red-outlined. Players should therefore treat them as theft-prone, even if individual guards are not standing directly beside every container. Fist Azari and Fist Meadows are the guards most consistently associated with the western tower’s ground-level room.

The Rustic Chest requires a DC 30 Sleight of Hand check and contains only minor gold and random dyes. It is not a high-value target unless the party is collecting dyes or completing a thorough theft sweep.

What is not part of the checkpoint loot

Loot on the Western Beach, in Sword Coast Couriers, in Fraygo’s Flophouse or in other nearby buildings should not be counted as checkpoint content. Those areas have separate inventories, encounters and quest states.

Avenge the Ironhands

The checkpoint is connected to the Ironhands’ Act Three storyline. If the deep gnomes have survived, their intervention here can expose their continued resistance and alter the Steel Watcher encounter.

Deal with the Gnomes

Manip Falcäo’s request to remove the gnomes is associated with the checkpoint’s inner section. The party can choose whether to cooperate with the Flaming Fist, ignore the request, side with the gnomes or handle the situation through other means.

Get Gortash’s Netherstone

The checkpoint is an early expression of Gortash’s control over access to the city. Passing through it places the party on the road towards Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and the wider political storyline surrounding Gortash.

Background inspiration

The checkpoint can grant the following inspiration opportunities:

These rewards are progression-sensitive and may depend on the exact resolution chosen.

For a thorough but low-risk visit

  1. 01
Before approaching the gate, save the game. The first conversation can lock in a major security outcome.
  2. 02
Check which party member will lead the dialogue. Karlach can produce a special Steel Watch response.
  3. 03
Confirm the Ironhands’ status. If Wulbren and the deep gnomes survived, their intervention may avoid combat.
  4. 04
Speak with Edwynna and decide whether to pay. The fee is the cleanest conventional route.
  5. 05
Resolve the Steel Watcher before looting. Do not assume that paying the fee means the area is safe.
  6. 06
Once inside Wyrm’s Crossing, return to the checkpoint. The inner towers are easier to explore after access has been secured.
  7. 07
Loot carefully. Red outlines indicate that the supplies belong to the garrison.
  8. 08
Search both towers. Check the wooden chests, the scroll stacks and the western tower’s Rustic Chest.
  9. 09
Speak with Manip Falcäo. Decide whether his request fits your faction and oath choices.
  10. 10
Use the checkpoint as a staging point for Wyrm’s Crossing. Fraygo’s Flophouse, Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and the other bridge-district locations are separate areas and should be explored independently.

Is South Span Checkpoint the entrance to the Lower City?

No. It is the entrance from Rivington into Wyrm’s Crossing. The Lower City lies farther beyond Wyrm’s Crossing and its later access points.

Do I have to pay 200 gold?

No. Paying Edwynna is the standard route, but the party can use the Ironhands’ intervention, Karlach’s special interaction, dialogue abilities, stealth or movement-based bypasses.

Can I enter Wyrm’s Crossing without fighting?

Usually, yes. The cleanest options are paying the fee and resolving the inspection through the Ironhands or Karlach. The exact result depends on previous choices.

Can I return to Rivington after entering?

Yes. Once Wyrm’s Crossing has been reached, the party can generally move back and forth through the checkpoint area, even if it bypassed the original dialogue.

Is the Western Beach part of South Span Checkpoint?

No. It is a separate unnamed coastal area west of the checkpoint vicinity. It has its own smuggling encounter, paths and loot.

Is Fraygo’s Flophouse part of the checkpoint?

No. Fraygo’s Flophouse is a separate building north of the checkpoint on the Wyrm’s Crossing side. It has its own vampire-spawn encounter and investigation content.

What happens if I am arrested?

The party is taken to Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Inventory may be moved into prison-related containers, so retrieve important equipment before leaving and be especially careful with quest items such as Necromancy of Thay.

This guide treats the South Span Checkpoint narrowly, as the checkpoint structure and its immediately associated gate encounter. The wider Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing directories have not been merged into it.

The checkpoint page identifies several containers as containing random or variable loot, so exact item rolls may differ between playthroughs, difficulty settings or game versions. The available evidence also does not establish a fully exhaustive list of every decorative, unnamed or non-interactive object inside the towers. Named characters and documented loot have been listed, but this should not be read as a claim that every piece of scenery has been catalogued.

The underlying community-wiki material also marks at least some paladin-oath interactions for verification. Those oath consequences should therefore be treated as progression-sensitive rather than universal rules.
