About this guide

Base game, Act Three location guide Spoiler level: Minor Act Three spoilers. The location itself is safe to explore, but some notes refer to major characters and quests.

Overview

The Bibliophile is a small bookshop in the Steeps district of the Lower City, Baldur’s Gate. It is easy to overlook because it is not a large civic building like Sorcerous Sundries, nor does it have a dramatic quest marker. Instead, it occupies the final building in a connected row of houses and small businesses along Stormshore Street.

The shop is run by Nansi Gretta, a human bookseller and aspiring author. She sells books, ordinary literature and a selection of spell scrolls, including potentially high-level scrolls. The building also contains Nansi’s private bedroom, a locked chest, several pieces of her writing and a mailbox containing small pieces of environmental storytelling.

The Bibliophile is therefore best understood as three things at once:

It is not a district, dungeon or broad regional area. The scope of this guide is the shop itself, including its two floors, entrance area, mailbox and directly associated contents. Nearby buildings such as Rainforest’s Home, The Blushing Mermaid and The Singing Lute are neighbouring locations, not subareas of The Bibliophile.

Where The Bibliophile is

The Bibliophile stands along Stormshore Street in the Lower City’s Steeps district. It is the last house in a row of connected buildings. The shop’s entrance is on the street-facing side, around X: -112, Y: -117.

The building’s exterior can look more like an ordinary townhouse than a major shop. Its relationship to neighbouring locations is useful for navigation:

These surrounding places are connections and landmarks, not parts of The Bibliophile. The Bibliophile itself consists of the shop building, its upper floor, the associated mailbox and the items belonging to Nansi.

Internal layout

Ground floor

The ground floor is the public shop area. Nansi Gretta normally stands here and can be spoken to or traded with. The room contains the bookshop’s shelves, counter and ordinary decorative furniture.

Upper floor

A ladder at the rear of the ground-floor room leads to Nansi’s bedroom. This is a private area rather than a second commercial floor. It contains:

There is no basement beneath the shop.

Reaching the shop

The Bibliophile becomes relevant once the party has entered the Lower City in Act Three. It is not an Act One or Act Two location, and it should not be confused with a library or book merchant from an earlier area.

The shop is close enough to other Lower City businesses that it is convenient to visit as part of a general shopping circuit. It is particularly worth checking when visiting nearby merchants for scrolls, clothing, food or general supplies.

A practical route is

  1. 01
    Enter the Lower City.
  2. 02
Travel through the Steeps and follow the streets towards Stormshore Street.
  3. 03
Look for the row of attached houses and small premises.
  4. 04
Identify the final building in the row as The Bibliophile.
  5. 05
Enter through the street-facing door and speak with Nansi.

Entering the upper floor

The upper floor is reached by the ladder at the far end of the ground-floor room. Entering it while Nansi is present may count as trespassing or provoke a reaction depending on the party’s actions and visibility. If you intend to search the chest or take personal documents, consider using:

The chest is not opened automatically by finding the bedroom. It has its own access requirements.

---

Nansi Gretta is the owner and operator of The Bibliophile. She is a human trader and a minor but unusually well-developed Lower City character. Her dialogue presents her as someone who genuinely loves books while also trying to establish herself as a writer.

She describes her shop modestly, acknowledging that it is not Candlekeep Library but claiming that she has “a few nice finds tucked away”. Nansi also has a line about the pleasure of searching through old parchments, reinforcing that the shop is intended to feel like a personal book business rather than a generic vendor stall.

Nansi is not a combat-focused character. Her listed statistics are those of a low-level commoner, and she is not associated with a fixed battle or boss encounter. Attacking her is therefore primarily a role-playing or theft decision rather than a meaningful combat challenge.

Nansi’s writing

Nansi has written or stored several pieces of literature:

The manuscript presents a draft adventure story covered in Nansi’s own editorial comments. Her notes reveal a writer struggling with pacing, tone and believability, but also show that she recognises when a passage works. The writing makes Nansi feel like a person with ambitions rather than a shopkeeper created only to sell scrolls.

---

Books

Nansi sells a large range of books and readable literature. Her stock can include ordinary books found elsewhere in the game, as well as items that are especially appropriate for a Lower City bookshop.

The exact stock is not a guaranteed fixed catalogue. Trader inventories can vary, and many books are inexpensive flavour items rather than mechanically important objects. Nevertheless, The Bibliophile is one of the best places in Act Three to browse if you want to collect readable books or search for a particular piece of in-world literature.

Nansi’s own recommendation book, The Bibliophile Recommends, suggests reading in three categories:

These recommendations also give a small impression of Nansi’s tastes and the sort of readership she hopes to serve.

Books

Books
CategoryExamples recommended by Nansi
ReferenceThe Life of Gorion; Fungii Forever
MysteriesWho Am I?; The Girl with Sparkles in Her Hair

Spell scrolls

Nansi also trades spell scrolls. Her stock can include scrolls from uncommon through very rare quality. Confirmed examples associated with her shop include:

The Scroll of Disintegrate is specifically recorded as being sold by Nansi and has a listed value of 600 gold pieces. It is a single-use scroll that allows the user to cast Disintegrate.

The important practical point is that the shop’s scroll stock should be checked directly in your own game. A scroll seen in one playthrough may not appear in another, and purchasing or refreshing the trader’s stock can affect what remains available.

Trader directory

Nansi has a trading interface even though she may not always be represented by the standard trader icon on the map.

The Bookshop Chest Key

Nansi carries the Bookshop Chest Key. The key opens the heavy chest upstairs, around X: -105, Y: -120. If you do not obtain the key, the chest can instead be opened with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.

The chest is primarily a storytelling reward. It contains further examples of Nansi’s writing rather than a major piece of equipment or a unique combat item.

Possible approaches include

  1. 01
    Pickpocket Nansi while hidden.
  2. 02
Take the key through a theft attempt and retreat.
  3. 03
Use Sleight of Hand directly on the chest.
  4. 04
Obtain access through ordinary role-playing methods if available in your playthrough.

What is upstairs

The exact placement of every paper can be easy to miss because the room is small and the documents blend into the environment. Search the desk and chest separately rather than assuming that opening one container reveals everything.

---

A mailbox outside The Bibliophile contains named notes. These are not conventional quests, but they expand the sense that Nansi runs an active business with customers and aspiring writers.

Rare book request

Rare book request is a note from Edwin asking whether the shop has a copy of Legendary Men: The Girdle of Masculinity. The note is in the mailbox at approximately X: -112, Y: -122.

The request is a joke about an unusual and probably mythical relic. It does not, by itself, create a major quest objective or guarantee a special reward.

No one will publish me!

This note is written by a distressed writer who recalls attending Volo’s salon. The writer describes being humiliated by Volo and his literary companions before fleeing. The note is also found in the mailbox, at approximately X: -112, Y: -122.

Together, the two mailbox notes suggest that Nansi’s shop receives more than straightforward customer orders. It is also a contact point for Baldur’s Gate’s bookish, eccentric and aspiring literary community.

Notes

Some of these items are associated with Nansi or her shop in the game’s literature references but may be obtained through trading or nearby context rather than all appearing as loose objects inside the building. The shop page associates them with The Bibliophile’s related literature, while the precise acquisition method can differ by item.

Keys and containers

The chest is a container rather than a named location, but it is important enough to include in a practical exploration guide because it holds Nansi’s private drafts.

Stop the Presses

Nansi’s attitude towards the party can change depending on the outcome of Stop the Presses. This is the main confirmed progression-related change associated with her.

Because the shop’s value is largely contained in its merchant inventory and readable material, consider visiting before resolving major Lower City story developments if you want the widest opportunity to trade.

Timing concerns

The following can be missable in the broad sense that they depend on Nansi remaining available:

There is no confirmed unique quest reward that requires completing a dedicated Bibliophile quest. The location’s main rewards are its scrolls, books, documents and character detail.

Fixed versus variable content

---

The Bibliophile has no fixed enemies, boss or trap sequence. Its dangers are social rather than tactical:

A stealth character can usually make the upper-floor search easier. Invisibility and turn-based mode are particularly useful when you want to control exactly when Nansi or nearby NPCs can see you.

The shop should not be confused with nearby locations that have their own guards, patrols or quest consequences. The Bibliophile’s security is primarily the normal Lower City crime system.

---

The Bibliophile sits within a dense Lower City shopping and exploration route. Nearby locations include:

Rainforest’s Home is directly adjacent to The Bibliophile. It is a separate two-storey building with a basement and its own entrances, security considerations and interior contents. It should not be merged into The Bibliophile’s boundaries simply because the buildings share a wall.

Fixed versus variable content

Is The Bibliophile a library?

No. It is a private bookshop and trader. It sells books and spell scrolls, but it is not a public library or a large explorable archive.

Who owns The Bibliophile?

Nansi Gretta owns and operates it. She is also an aspiring author.

Where is the shop?

It is in the Lower City’s Steeps district, along Stormshore Street, in the final building of a connected row of houses and small premises.

Does the shop have a basement?

No. The Bibliophile has two floors and no basement.

How do I open the upstairs chest?

Use the Bookshop Chest Key, pickpocketed from Nansi, or pass a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check on the chest.

Does Nansi sell Scrolls of Revivify?

Yes. Nansi’s store is recorded as carrying Scrolls of Revivify, alongside books and other scrolls.

Does Nansi sell Scroll of Disintegrate?

The Scroll of Disintegrate is recorded as being sold by Nansi, but trader inventory can vary, so it may not appear in every visit or playthrough.

Is there a quest at The Bibliophile?

There is no confirmed dedicated quest centred on the shop. It is mainly a merchant, lore and exploration location. Its associated notes and manuscripts provide flavour, while Nansi’s attitude can be affected by the outcome of Stop the Presses.

Should I kill or rob Nansi?

There is usually little reason to kill her. Trading, pickpocketing or stealth preserves access to her inventory and dialogue. If you want the upstairs documents, use stealth or obtain the chest key rather than starting an unnecessary fight.
