Upper City Gate Checkpoint

The Upper City Gate Checkpoint, also called the Baldur’s Gate Checkpoint, is the guarded bridge leading from the Lower City towards the Upper City.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • This is a Lower City location The bridge and gate are the boundary of the Upper City, not a broad entrance into a normally accessible Upper City district.
  • Do not treat the checkpoint like South Span Checkpoint It has no normal admission process, no standard fee and no ordinary route into the Upper City during the main body of Act Three.
  • The apparent invitation is a trap Fist Darbonna and Fist ‘Deadeye’ Mibbs claim that the party has special dispensation, but both are infected with mind flayer tadpoles and are apparently being controlled by the Netherbrain.
  • Crossing too early is dangerous Before the party has acquired all Netherstones, approaching the far end of the bridge causes the Netherbrain to inflict debilitating conditions and may lead to a game-over sequence.
  • After all Netherstones are acquired, the checkpoint changes Three civilians near the queue transform into mind flayers when the party approaches, triggering a short combat encounter.
  • The Upper City is not a normal Act Three exploration region The playable Upper City is reached during Confront the Elder Brain, while a small number of Upper City buildings, notably Ramazith’s Tower and Szarr Palace, can be entered by separate routes before then.

About this guide

Spoilers for Act Three and the endgame of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Overview

The Upper City Gate Checkpoint, also called the Baldur’s Gate Checkpoint, is the guarded bridge leading from the Lower City towards the Upper City. It is not a freely explorable entrance to the Upper City during ordinary Act Three play. Instead, it is a deliberately misleading endgame location: the checkpoint’s guards appear ready to grant the party exceptional access, but crossing the bridge before the correct stage of the final quest allows the Netherbrain to attack the party’s minds.

The checkpoint occupies part of the Steeps district of the Lower City, rather than being part of the Upper City itself. Its immediate surroundings include the Baldur’s Gate waypoint, the large square with a statue of Balduran, Facemaker’s Boutique, The Glitter Gala, the route towards Bloomridge Park, and the river channel running towards the House of Grief.

Boundaries and hierarchy

The checkpoint belongs to the Lower City, specifically the Steeps. It should therefore be separated from:

The checkpoint’s practical boundary is the bridge and gate structure beginning near the Lower City street and extending towards the closed Upper City entrance. The bridge crosses a watercourse that runs from the far end of Bloomridge Park towards the House of Grief. A second statue of Balduran stands on the bridge and roughly divides the guards and waiting civilians into two groups.

Included surroundings

The following places are part of the checkpoint’s immediate approach or visual context, but they are not all subareas of the checkpoint itself:

The businesses and landmarks above are neighbouring Lower City locations or streetside scenery. Their presence does not mean that the checkpoint provides their services or that they are buildings within the checkpoint. The location description specifically identifies Facemaker’s Boutique and The Glitter Gala on the eastern side of the approach, with the waypoint on the western side.

Boundaries and hierarchy: steps

  1. 01
The Lower City, the wider Act Three region in which the checkpoint is situated.
  2. 02
The Upper City, the wealthy district beyond the gate.
  3. 03
The Baldur’s Gate waypoint and surrounding Steeps streets, which form the approach to the bridge.
  4. 04
The Upper City areas used during the endgame, which are reached through the final quest rather than by simply passing this gate.
  5. 05
Other city checkpoints, especially South Span Checkpoint between Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing. South Span has its own guards, dialogue and Steel Watch inspection and should not be merged with the Upper City Gate Checkpoint.

Included surroundings

Geography and visual layout

The approach is a broad Lower City street leading towards a bridge. The large Balduran statue plaza lies behind the party when approaching from the Lower City. The bridge itself crosses the narrow waterway and leads towards the imposing Upper City gate.

The arrangement reinforces the city’s hierarchy. Upper City residents are allowed to queue, but the posted order says that admission is suspended. The party’s apparent exemption is therefore conspicuous and suspicious. The gate’s signage states that no admission is permitted until further notice, while residents may queue and wait.

Access and routes

Reaching the checkpoint

The checkpoint is reached from the Lower City by following the street near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint towards the bridge. The waypoint is the most convenient fast-travel destination for exploring the location.

The checkpoint is not accessed through the South Span Checkpoint. That checkpoint is in Rivington and controls access towards Wyrm’s Crossing, making it a separate location with separate progression conditions.

Can the party enter the Upper City from here?

Not as a normal exploration route. During most of Act Three, the gate is closed because the city authorities have restricted access in response to the Cult of the Absolute and the wider crisis. The Upper City is normally entered during the endgame quest Confront the Elder Brain, after the party travels through the Morphic Pool.

The checkpoint scene is consequently not a conventional locked-door puzzle. The game is presenting a story event that looks like an invitation while warning the player not to accept it prematurely.

There are separate routes into certain Upper City buildings before the final quest:

These routes do not turn the checkpoint into an open entrance and should not be treated as alternate methods of passing the gate.

Reaching the checkpoint: A practical route is

  1. 01
    Fast travel to Baldur’s Gate.
  2. 02
Face the large street leading towards the Upper City gate.
  3. 03
Pass the streetside businesses and the Balduran statue plaza.
  4. 04
Approach the queue and the Flaming Fist patrols.
  5. 05
Speak to the guards at the gate if you want to progress the checkpoint scene.

Security and law enforcement

The checkpoint is controlled by the Flaming Fist, supported by a Steel Watcher. Fist Darbonna appears to be in charge of the admission orders, although Fist ‘Deadeye’ Mibbs plays the most important role in the party’s initial conversation.

The guards are not simply checking papers or collecting a fee. Their orders are effectively to refuse entry to everyone. The queue of residents is therefore an expression of the city’s emergency restrictions rather than a working admission line.

Security directory

The location page identifies Darbonna as the apparent commander and records the other Flaming Fists and the Steel Watcher as gate guards.

The hidden reason for the exception

Darbonna and Mibbs are infected with mind flayer tadpoles. When the party reaches the gate, Mibbs claims that the group has “special dispensation” and appears ready to let them proceed. The dialogue can reveal that his behaviour is not entirely his own. A DC 15 Insight check is associated with recognising the unnatural situation.

The apparent authorisation is part of the Netherbrain’s attempt to draw the party towards the Upper City. According to the checkpoint’s account, the Netherbrain intends to overwhelm the Emperor’s defences and force the party’s transformation.

Walkthrough: the initial checkpoint scene

Before acquiring all Netherstones

If the party approaches the gate before obtaining all Netherstones, speak to the guards if you want to see the full dialogue and the false offer of admission.

When the party attempts to cross the bridge in this progression state, the Netherbrain attacks their minds. Party members can receive Mindbroken or Stunned conditions. The effect applies to the whole party even if only one character crosses ahead. The two infected Flaming Fists are not affected in the same way.

The Emperor repeatedly warns the party that they are being deceived and may teleport them back to the beginning of the bridge. The location page records that continuing beyond the gate can potentially result in a game-over screen, although that part of the page is marked as requiring verification. It is therefore safest to describe the result as a potential game-over outcome, not as an unqualified universal result for every version or situation.

After acquiring all Netherstones

Returning to the checkpoint after obtaining all Netherstones changes the scene. Three civilians near the queue undergo forced ceremorphosis and become mind flayers. The Flaming Fists are caught by surprise but fight alongside the party.

This is a progression-dependent encounter rather than a random event. The location notes specifically identify several civilians as appearing only after all Netherstones have been acquired.

Before acquiring all Netherstones: Recommended approach

  1. 01
Make a manual save before speaking to Darbonna or Mibbs.
  2. 02
Talk to the guards and follow the conversation far enough to expose the supposed special dispensation.
  3. 03
Use the available Insight dialogue when offered, particularly the DC 15 Insight check.
  4. 04
If the Emperor warns the party to turn back, heed the warning.
  5. 05
Do not deliberately continue to the far end of the bridge unless testing the outcome on a separate save.

After acquiring all Netherstones: Suggested steps

  1. 01
Return to the Baldur’s Gate waypoint after obtaining all Netherstones.
  2. 02
Approach the checkpoint and watch the civilians near the queue.
  3. 03
Prepare for a sudden mind flayer encounter.
  4. 04
Prioritise the mind flayers before they can use their strongest control abilities.
  5. 05
Search Darbonna and Mibbs afterwards if they are dead.
  6. 06
Collect the two Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens.
  7. 07
Note that the surviving guards flee to warn their superiors and later disappear from the area.

Residents and civilians

Most civilians at the checkpoint are not quest givers, merchants or companions. They are named background characters used to make the queue feel like a real civic emergency. Some stand in the queue, while others appear nearby and comment on the unnatural atmosphere.

Progression-dependent civilians

The following named civilians are associated with the post-Netherstone transformation scene or appear only in that later state:

These three are recorded as appearing after the party has acquired all Netherstones and then being transformed into mind flayers as the party approaches the gate.

Civilians who are nearby rather than standing in the queue

The following characters are associated with the checkpoint’s civilian activity but are not necessarily part of the main queue:

Their dialogue suggests that they considered passing through the checkpoint but withdrew because the area felt unnatural or unnerving. They should therefore be listed as nearby civilians or commentary characters, not as ordinary queue members.

Later-state civilian

Phoskyx appears after the Netherstones have been acquired. When nearby people begin transforming into mind flayers, Phoskyx flees rather than joining the combat.

Loot and documents

Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens

Two Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens can be obtained from the checkpoint’s infected guards:

These are fixed, location-associated rewards rather than random drops. Their availability depends on the player’s handling of the checkpoint scene and whether the guards become hostile or are killed during the progression events.

Upper City Access Orders

The checkpoint is associated with the document Upper City Access Orders. It provides context for the restrictions surrounding the gate and the authority controlling admission.

The document should be understood as supporting the checkpoint’s political and security situation. It does not create a general pass that opens the Upper City for ordinary exploration.

Quest and progression connections

Confront the Elder Brain

The checkpoint is linked to Confront the Elder Brain, the final major quest of Act Three. Its importance is primarily narrative and progression-based:

The actual endgame route into the Upper City occurs through the final quest rather than by completing a checkpoint inspection.

The exact result of forcing the early bridge sequence is marked for verification in the available location source. Treat that result cautiously and keep a separate save if experimenting.

What is not part of this location

To avoid common boundary mistakes, the following should not be merged into the Upper City Gate Checkpoint:

The Upper City itself contains or is associated with locations such as High Hall and Szarr Palace, but those are not subareas of the checkpoint bridge.

Trivia and lore

The checkpoint is one of the clearest examples of Baldur’s Gate 3 using geography as a narrative warning. The gate is visually close enough to invite experimentation, and the guards appear to provide an easy solution, but the scene is designed to undermine the assumption that every visible route is ready to be explored.

Its queue also contrasts with the earlier South Span checkpoint. South Span presents a conventional barrier with a bribe, Steel Watch inspection and possible bypasses. The Upper City Gate Checkpoint presents a political exclusion zone that is effectively closed to everyone, followed by an apparently generous exception that is secretly controlled by the Netherbrain.

The presence of named but largely non-interactive civilians is also deliberate. Characters such as Bustlebury, Byldrath, Donna Blague and News Hawker Jonah make the checkpoint feel like a genuine civic bottleneck rather than an empty combat arena. Their queue represents ordinary citizens waiting for permission while the party is manipulated into believing it has earned privileged access.
