About this guide
Base game, Act Three, Lower City. Major spoilers for “Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant”, “End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality” and the Mystic Carrion encounter.
Overview
Vonayn’s Home is a small beach house in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate 3, positioned beside the Heapside Strand beach and the eastern Lower City docks. It is easy to mistake the house for a minor piece of scenery, but it is a significant quest location: Thrumbo, the runaway undead servant of Mystic Carrion, is hiding inside its wardrobe.
The building also contains a concealed basement that was previously used for smuggling people and goods into or out of Baldur’s Gate. That basement includes traps, a hidden riverside chamber, a trapped chest, smuggler correspondence and the key to Counting House Safe nº6.
Vonayn’s Home should be treated as a single Lower City location with two connected subareas:
The surrounding beach, pier, fish market and Sahuagin encounter belong to Heapside Strand, not to Vonayn’s Home itself. They are included below only where they affect access to the house or its quests.
Introduction
- 01Ground floor, a small beach-house room containing the kitchen, bed, wardrobe and access to the basement.
- 02Basement, a trapped smuggling hideout with a concealed dock and cave-like storage area.
Location and boundaries
Vonayn’s Home stands on the shoreline east of Philgrave’s Mansion, in the Lower City. The most direct approach is from the Heapside Strand waypoint: descend towards the beach and wooden piers, then use the stairs leading up to the house. The house is close to the water and is one of the few buildings in this stretch of the Lower City with an exit directly onto the beach.
The surrounding shoreline is a separate area. Heapside Strand contains the beach, boats, wooden berths, a long waterside walkway, a small fish market and the nearby approach to Philgrave’s Mansion. An Old Troutman operates as a seafood trader there. The Sahuagin ambush that can occur when the party first reaches the beach is also a Heapside Strand encounter, not an encounter inside Vonayn’s Home.
Reaching the house
From Heapside Strand
The Sahuagin group can include Sahuagin, Sahuagin Hunters and a Sahuagin Champion. The Champion can provide valuables and a Smelly Bag whose contents can reveal an early reference to the Iron Throne. This encounter is associated with the shoreline approach rather than the interior of the house.
From Philgrave’s Mansion
Vonayn’s Home is east of Philgrave’s Mansion. This is the natural route if the party has already met Mystic Carrion and accepted the task of finding Thrumbo. Information gathered in the mansion and from the Strange Beggars gradually points towards a waterside hiding place and then towards a wardrobe.
From Heapside Strand
- 01Fast-travel to Heapside Strand.
- 02Follow the stairs down towards the beach and wooden piers.
- 03If this is the party’s first visit to the shoreline, prepare for the Sahuagin encounter.
- 04Continue along the beach and look for the stairs leading up to the house.
- 05Enter Vonayn’s Home from the shore-facing steps.
Ground floor
The ground floor is a single modest room. It contains a bed, kitchen area and stove, with ordinary containers that do not normally contain notable fixed loot. The important object is the wardrobe.
Thrumbo’s wardrobe
Thrumbo is hiding inside the wardrobe at approximately X: 56, Y: -120. Interacting with the wardrobe causes him to emerge and begin a conversation. He does not function as a normal resident or merchant while he is here. His presence is temporary and tied to the Mystic Carrion quest chain.
Thrumbo explains that Mystic Carrion murdered him and his companions, then turned them into unwilling undead servants. He asks the party to help free them. The party can either side with Thrumbo or kill him and return his remains to Mystic Carrion. Helping Thrumbo eventually leads to the investigation into Mystic Carrion’s immortality.
Beach House Hatch Key
The Beach House Hatch Key is on top of the wardrobe. It opens the locked hatch on the porch at approximately X: 61, Y: -123, leading to the basement. Without the key, the hatch can be lockpicked with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.
The key is easy to overlook if the party opens the wardrobe immediately and moves on. It is worth collecting before leaving the room, particularly if the party has no character suited to lockpicking.
Basement
The basement is more substantial than the ground floor and is the location’s main exploration area. It was formerly used as a smuggling hideout. The documents found here refer to moving goods and people in and out of Baldur’s Gate, and the hidden dock confirms that the house had direct access to the water.
Initial room and trapped passage
The first basement room contains boxes and an oak door. Beyond the door is a passage containing several tripwire traps. The traps can be noticed through Perception and should be disarmed with a character who has strong Dexterity and Sleight of Hand.
There is also another oak door leading towards a smaller passage. At its end is a lever set inside a narrow rocky alcove. The party cannot simply walk up to the lever, but it can be activated from a distance, for example with a ranged attack. Activating it opens a false wall and reveals the hidden living area.
Practical advice: enter turn-based mode before crossing the trapped corridor. If a character fails a disarm attempt, the resulting explosion can damage nearby objects and party members.
Hidden riverside chamber
The false wall opens into a concealed living area with:
The rowboat and dock are environmental evidence of the house’s previous function. They do not provide a separate travel route or a boat-based activity. The chamber is a hidden room within the basement, not a separate Lower City subarea.
Counting House Safe nº6 Key
The Counting House Safe nº6 Key is in a backpack beside the bed at approximately X: 61, Y: -123. It opens Safe 6 in the Counting House. The corresponding safe contains minor supplies, including potions or elixirs, gold and other low-level miscellaneous loot. The safe key is a fixed item, not a random drop.
The key is unrelated to the Counting House’s numbered vault keys. In particular, it should not be confused with:
Cave-like storage area
The eastern part of the basement contains a cave-like storage space. A trapped wooden chest stands near an acid barrel. The chest contains some gold and a random potion. A failed disarm attempt can cause the chest and acid barrel to explode together.
The contents of the chest are not a fixed named equipment reward. Treat them as ordinary variable loot rather than a guaranteed unique item.
Named items and documents
Documents
The basement’s papers add context to the house and its former occupants. They are particularly useful for confirming that this was a smuggler’s hideout rather than simply an abandoned coastal home.
The letter To ‘One-Eye’ is in the mailbox outside the home at approximately X: 52, Y: -118. It describes a missing friend, an appointment with an unknown person and a request to meet at the Water Queen’s House. It is atmospheric evidence connected to the house’s wider history, not a separate quest with its own confirmed objective.
The sources consulted identify the documents and their locations, but do not establish every writer, recipient or former occupant of the house. Those details should not be inferred solely from the presence of the letter.
Residents, visitors and associated characters
Thrumbo
Thrumbo is the only named character directly identified as occupying Vonayn’s Home during the game. He is a runaway zombie and former servant of Mystic Carrion. He hides in the wardrobe because he and his companions are attempting to escape Carrion’s control.
After the party helps him and destroys Mystic Carrion’s heart, Thrumbo leaves the house and returns with the other freed servants to Philgrave’s Mansion. He then replaces Mystic Carrion as a trader there. Vonayn’s Home is therefore a temporary hiding place, not Thrumbo’s permanent post.
People associated with the location
The following characters are connected to the location through nearby quests or clues, but are not residents of Vonayn’s Home:
Quest walkthrough
Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant
The quest normally begins at Philgrave’s Mansion when Mystic Carrion asks the party to find Thrumbo. Depending on the order in which the party explores, clues can also be discovered before or after speaking with Carrion.
Thrumbo’s location can be found through exploration even if the party fails to obtain every clue. His conversation is the important trigger at the house.
End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality
If the party sides with Thrumbo, the next stage is to discover how to kill Mystic Carrion permanently. Thrumbo suggests investigating the cellar beneath Philgrave’s Mansion. The later investigation reveals that Carrion’s heart is hidden inside Thrumbo.
The heart jar explodes when destroyed, dealing 8d6 fire damage, so it is safer to destroy it at range and keep party members clear of the blast.
Alternative: kill Thrumbo
The party can reject Thrumbo’s request and kill him. This allows the body or heart-related quest item to be returned to Mystic Carrion, but it follows a different outcome from the liberation route. The sources confirm the choice and the possibility of killing Thrumbo, but the wider consequences depend on how the party handles Mystic Carrion afterwards.
Find Mystic Carrion’s Servant: A reliable route is
- 01Visit Philgrave’s Mansion and speak with Mystic Carrion.
- 02Search the mansion for information concerning Thrumbo.
- 03Follow the clues towards the water and the Lower City beach.
- 04Reach Vonayn’s Home from Heapside Strand.
- 05Take the Beach House Hatch Key from the wardrobe.
- 06Open the wardrobe and speak with Thrumbo.
- 07Decide whether to help him or kill him.
- 08If helping Thrumbo, continue into the Mystic Carrion quest chain.
End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality: The broad progression is
- 01Speak with Thrumbo in Vonayn’s Home.
- 02Agree to help free him.
- 03Investigate Mystic Carrion’s basement and the Ancient Lair.
- 04Read Funerary Jar Form and Function.
- 05Return to Thrumbo and tell him what the party has learned.
- 06Obtain the Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Heart.
- 07Destroy the jar with a ranged attack.
- 08Return to Philgrave’s Mansion and defeat Mystic Carrion.
- 09Collect the quest rewards and free Thrumbo’s companions.

Hazards and secrets
Tripwire traps
The basement corridor contains multiple tripwires. They are the main immediate hazard. Bring:
Lever alcove
The lever is positioned where normal movement may not reach it. Use a ranged weapon or another verified ranged interaction. Activating it reveals the concealed chamber. This is a deliberate environmental puzzle, not a requirement to use a particular class or spell.
Trapped chest and acid barrel
The wooden chest in the cave area is trapped and placed beside an acid barrel. Failed disarming can destroy the chest’s surroundings and harm nearby characters. The reward is modest and partly random, so do not take unnecessary risks if the party lacks a suitable trap disarmer.
Lore and atmosphere
Vonayn’s Home is one of the Lower City’s smaller environmental stories. The surface room appears to be an ordinary coastal dwelling, but the basement reveals a hidden infrastructure of smuggling. The false wall, concealed dock, boat and correspondence all suggest that the building served people who needed to move secretly along the waterfront.
The letter to ‘One-Eye’ provides a second layer of mystery. Its writer is worried about a missing friend and directs the recipient towards the Water Queen’s House. The game does not clearly identify every person involved, so the safest reading is that the house preserves traces of several underground or clandestine networks rather than belonging exclusively to one named criminal group.
Its location also reinforces Thrumbo’s story. He plans to escape by boat, and the house is close enough to the beach and hidden dock to make it a plausible refuge. The area’s water access is therefore both practical quest design and part of the narrative explanation for why Thrumbo is hiding here.
