About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act One events at Waukeen’s Rest, the Zhentarim Basement beneath it, time-sensitive rescue outcomes, major quest consequences and links to later acts.

Overview

Waukeen’s Rest is a burning roadside inn in the north-west of the Wilderness during Act One of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not merely a single building. For guide purposes, the location includes the fortified inn compound, its courtyard and surrounding approaches, the small barn used by the Zhentarim, and the Zhentarim Basement beneath the inn. The Risen Road, the Mountain Pass, and the wider Wilderness are neighbouring areas, not subdivisions of Waukeen’s Rest.

The site is already under attack when the party arrives. Flaming Fists are attempting to rescue people trapped inside, while the remains of goblin and drow raiders lie among the burning buildings. The most important rescue is Counsellor Florrick, whose survival affects later events involving Duke Ravengard, Wyll and Act Three. The area also provides one of Act One’s most useful early choices of lightning-themed weapons and access to a Zhentarim operation connected to the missing shipment quest.

Reaching Waukeen’s Rest

The usual approach is along the Risen Road from the east or south-east. The party can also reach it while exploring the northern Wilderness and can learn of the place through Rugan, a Zhentarim agent encountered during the gnoll attack on the Risen Road.

The area is recognisable before the party reaches the gate because of the smoke, flames and cries for help. Once the party reaches the inner yard, the rescue sequence becomes time-sensitive.

Entering the burning inn

The main entrance is blocked, but there are several alternatives:

The objective is not simply to enter the building. It is to reach and release Florrick from the broken-door room on the first floor of the western wing.

Entering the burning inn: steps

  1. 01
Main door: Speak with Gauntlet Yeva and help the Flaming Fists break through. The normal Strength check is DC 10. Paladins have an advantage option, while bards can use Performance. There is only one party-wide attempt.
  2. 02
Benryn’s room: Enter through the western wing and reach the room where Benryn is trapped.
  3. 03
Front gallery: Jump to the gallery above the main entrance, approximately X: -72, Y: 605, then destroy the boarded window.
  4. 04
Eastern wing: Break the large wine barrel blocking the eastern entrance. From there, jump or use crates to reach the upper level.
  5. 05
First-floor suite: Use the Suite Key, found on a halfling corpse outside, approximately X: -88, Y: 610. The door can also be lockpicked at DC 18 Sleight of Hand or destroyed.

Entering the Zhentarim Basement

The principal entrance is in the barn on the western side of Waukeen’s Rest, approximately X: -114, Y: 612.

Approaching the barn can trigger a DC 15 Perception check. Inside, Salazon is concealed behind shelves and demands a password. The party can:

The entrance is surrounded by Oil Barrels and Firewine Barrels, so attacking or provoking Salazon can create a chain reaction.

Residents and story-associated characters

The named characters associated with the above-ground inn include:

The main inn encounter also involves the corpse of Jacek. Gauntlet Marilla, Krug and Sszaryn are among the dead whose bodies can provide information through Speak with Dead, while Mirileth is connected with Benryn’s story.

Flaming Fists

The Flaming Fists are the lawful security force attempting to contain the disaster. Yeva directs the rescue effort, while Dain and Tristan try to control the flames using water from the courtyard fountain. Ephren prays over Jacek near the gate.

If Florrick is rescued, the Flaming Fists withdraw and regroup to pursue the kidnappers. Most of the temporary personnel leave the location. If the rescue is missed, Dain and Ephren remain among the ruins, while Dain attempts to investigate what happened.

Zhentarim

The Zhentarim are operating beneath the inn. Their immediate concerns are the missing shipment, the risk of Flaming Fist discovery and the need to abandon or destroy the hideout. The organisation is represented locally by figures such as Salazon, Zarys, Brem and other guards and traders in the basement.

They are not ordinary innkeepers or merchants. Their presence is an illicit logistics operation involving mercenaries, contraband and a valuable locked chest.

Raiders

The inn has been attacked by goblins and drow. Their bodies remain throughout the compound, and the raid is tied to the kidnapping of Duke Ravengard and the broader activity of the Cult of the Absolute. Speaking with a dead drow raider can provide information about the kidnappers and Moonrise Towers.

---

Courtyard fountain

The fountain is the visual centre of the inner yard. Flaming Fists use it while trying to extinguish the fire. Reaching the yard is also the important progression trigger for the rescue timer.

Main gate

The gate separates the inn’s enclosed compound from the Risen Road approach. Ephren and the body of Jacek can be found near this area during the active fire state.

Burning central entrance

The main door is the most obvious route into the inn, but it is blocked. Yeva’s Strength or alternative skill check provides a direct method of opening it.

Western barn

This is the concealed entrance to the Zhentarim Basement. It looks like an ordinary outbuilding, but the perception prompt, Salazon’s presence and the nearby barrels reveal its true purpose.

Hidden cache locations

Verified hidden or less obvious rewards around the compound include:

The exact contents of the crevice should be checked during play, since the location is a concealed environmental cache rather than a named quest reward.

---

Rescue the Grand Duke

This is the main Waukeen’s Rest quest. Speaking with Yeva near the blocked main door begins the rescue effort. The immediate objective is to save Florrick, who is trapped upstairs.

The quest’s wider story concerns the kidnapping of Duke Ulder Ravengard. The Flaming Fists are initially focused on extracting Florrick and understanding what happened. Later investigation connects the attack to the Cult of the Absolute and Moonrise Towers.

Recommended rescue order

  1. 01
    Enter the inner yard.
  2. 02
Speak with Yeva if you want the direct rescue dialogue.
  3. 03
Ignore unnecessary looting until the trapped people are safe.
  4. 04
Enter through the main door, western wing, eastern wing or upper gallery.
  5. 05
    Rescue Florrick first.
  6. 06
    Rescue Benryn if possible.
  7. 07
Leave the inn before exploring every container.
  8. 08
Return after the fire sequence has ended to search safely.

Rescue the Trapped Man

Benryn is trapped beneath a beam in the western wing. Freeing him begins the rescue activity associated with his wife, Mirileth, and the missing dowry. The area provides environmental clues and a hidden chest connected to the Dowry Ring.

This is a lower-priority rescue than Florrick from a long-term story perspective, but it should be completed before leaving if you want the local family story and its reward.

Find the Missing Shipment

This quest is associated with the Zhentarim operation, but its opening encounter is normally on the Risen Road. The party can meet Rugan and Olly while they are surrounded by gnolls, or bypass that encounter and enter the Zhentarim Hideout in Waukeen’s Rest to speak with Zarys. Both routes converge on the shipment and its locked chest.

The Risen Road encounter is separate from Waukeen’s Rest geographically. However, the decisions made there affect how the Zhentarim receive the party in the basement.

The Blade of Frontiers

Wyll’s personal story is affected by the rescue of the Grand Duke. If Wyll is recruited or played as an origin character, the Waukeen’s Rest event adds the related subquest The Grand Duke. The kidnapping becomes one of the foundations of Wyll’s later story.

---

The fire is the most important hazard in the area.

The timer begins when the party reaches the inner yard, not simply when the location first appears on the map. After that point, long resting, returning to camp or fast travelling can cause the fire to progress. Characters still trapped inside may die.

If Florrick is rescued

Florrick leaves with the Flaming Fists after explaining the situation. The party receives the Rescued from the Flames and Protector of the Duke inspiration events where applicable, and Florrick grants a choice of one of three special items:

The three items form a deliberately related reward set, so the best selection depends on the party’s build.

Saving Florrick also preserves her later Act Two appearance at Last Light Inn and her Act Three storyline. If she later becomes imprisoned at Wyrm’s Rock, the party can receive the quest to free her.

If Florrick is rescued

If Florrick is rescued
RewardBroad use
The JoltshooterLightning-themed ranged weapon
The Sparky PointsLightning-themed weapon
The SpellsparklerLightning-themed spellcasting weapon

If Florrick dies

If the party leaves, fast travels or rests after starting the rescue, Florrick can die in the fire. Later events involving her in Acts Two and Three do not occur, although the broader Rescue the Grand Duke quest can still be obtained in Act Three through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.

After the disaster, most Flaming Fists leave. Ephren remains near the gate and Dain searches the scene. Investigation can reveal that Duke Ravengard was the target, but Florrick cannot be revived through Speak with Dead.

---

Equipment

The three reward weapons are mutually exclusive in a normal playthrough because Florrick presents them as a choice. The Faded Drow Leather Armour can also provide the The Spider’s Gift inspiration after identification.

Equipment

Hidden and environmental loot

The eastern wing is particularly useful for camp supplies, but it is safer to search it after rescuing the trapped characters.

---

Fire

The fire is both a combat hazard and a progression system. Burning areas can block routes and kill NPCs if the party takes too long.

Explosive barrels

The Zhentarim entrance contains oil and Firewine Barrels, while the basement contains Smokepowder Barrels and proximity explosives. Fire spells, thrown explosives and careless area attacks can turn the hideout into a chain reaction.

Zhentarim hostility

Entering the basement does not automatically require combat. However, failing the password conversation, stealing openly or mishandling the shipment can turn the Zhentarim against the party.

Vertical routes

The inn’s alternative entrances require jumps, improvised stairs or access to upper galleries. Characters with good Strength, Misty Step, Feather Fall or similar movement tools have more options, but the area can be completed without relying on a single class.

---

For a first playthrough, the safest order is:

This route prioritises missable content before optional looting and keeps the two separate story threads clear: the Flaming Fist rescue above ground and the Zhentarim shipment below it.

---

Waukeen’s Rest is mentioned or reflected in later progression through the people rescued there rather than through a revisitable, developed settlement. Florrick can appear at Last Light Inn in Act Two if she survives. In Act Three, her survival allows the party to become involved in her imprisonment at Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Duke Ravengard’s kidnapping also develops into the Act Three sequence involving Gortash, Wyll, Mizora and the Iron Throne.

If Duke Ravengard is eventually rescued, he can become an ally for Gather Your Allies. His later conversations can also connect Wyll’s story to Ansur, the guardian dragon beneath Baldur’s Gate.

After the rescue

---

Is the Risen Road part of Waukeen’s Rest?

No. The Risen Road is a neighbouring named location and a broader Wilderness route. It contains the gnoll encounter with Rugan and Olly. Waukeen’s Rest is the separate burning inn and its associated basement.

Is the Zhentarim Basement part of Waukeen’s Rest?

Yes, in the location hierarchy used by this guide and the game’s location references. It is a distinct underground child area beneath the inn, with its own waypoint and route towards the Underdark.

Can I save everyone?

You can rescue the important trapped survivors if you act immediately, but the area is designed around limited time and an active fire. Florrick is the most consequential rescue. Some Flaming Fists and other characters are already dead when the party arrives.

What happens if I take a long rest?

If the rescue timer has begun, a long rest can advance the fire and kill characters trapped inside. Treat the inner-yard trigger as a point of no return for normal resting and fast travel.

Which Florrick reward should I choose?

Choose according to your build. The Joltshooter is generally most attractive to a ranged attacker, The Sparky Points to a weapon user who wants lightning-related effects, and The Spellsparkler to a spellcaster or character who benefits from spell-based lightning charges. The exact value depends on the party’s equipment and whether you are building around Lightning Charges.

Can I access the Zhentarim Basement without meeting Rugan?

Yes. The barn entrance can be opened by dealing with Salazon directly. The password can also be learned through Detect Thoughts or obtained through other interactions. Rugan’s Risen Road encounter is an alternate introduction to the Zhentarim shipment rather than a mandatory prerequisite.

What is the most important thing not to miss?

Rescue Florrick before resting or leaving after entering the inner yard. Her survival has consequences well beyond Act One, while the weapon reward is useful but less important than preserving her later story.
