Key takeaways
- The Worg Pens are a child area of the Shattered Sanctum, not a separate region of the Goblin Camp.
- The ordinary route enters through the Worg Pens antechamber, beside Minthara’s headquarters.
- Halsin is held in the central animal pen in the form of a Cave Bear.
- Helping Halsin starts a fight with the local guards and may draw additional guards if the goblin children escape.
- The area contains several fixed items, but the three scrolls in the eastern side room are random.
- The prison cell contains explosives, camp supplies, healing potions, a dead elf and a one-way secret passage back into the antechamber.
- Attacking, killing or abandoning Halsin can change the outcome of Rescue the Druid Halsin and related Emerald Grove content.
About this guide
Base-game scope. This guide covers the Worg Pens in Baldur’s Gate 3, including the attached prison cell and immediate antechamber access. It does not treat the wider Goblin Camp, Shattered Sanctum, Defiled Temple or Minthara’s headquarters as part of the Worg Pens.
Overview
The Worg Pens are a compact but important sub-area of the Shattered Sanctum, itself the interior temple area of the Goblin Camp in Act One. The location is best known as the prison of Halsin, the First Druid of the Emerald Grove, who is being held in bear wild shape while goblins torment him and prepare him as food for the worgs.
The area combines an animal enclosure, goblin guard post, slaughtering station and small prison. It is the main point at which the party can rescue Halsin, begin the decisive phase of the goblin leadership storyline and obtain several easily missed items, including the Worgfang dagger and Beastmaster’s Chain. The pens also have a second function: characters arrested inside the Goblin Camp or Shattered Sanctum may be taken to the prison cell here.
What counts as the Worg Pens?
The Worg Pens are a separately loaded sub-area within the Shattered Sanctum. Their boundaries include:
The Worg Pens antechamber is the connecting approach immediately outside the main pens. It belongs to the Shattered Sanctum rather than the interior pen area. The skeleton in the antechamber carrying the Ring of Poison Resistance is therefore nearby, but should not be counted as loot inside the Worg Pens proper.
The Worg Pens are not connected directly to the outdoor Goblin Camp, the Defiled Temple or the Underdark. All normal access goes through the Shattered Sanctum.
What counts as the Worg Pens?: steps
- 01The entry corridor and two small side rooms.
- 02The main animal-pen chamber.
- 03The worg enclosure.
- 04Halsin’s enclosure.
- 05The butcher’s area and nearby storage.
- 06The upper prison cell.
- 07The storeroom beneath the prison stairs.
- 08The dead elf’s hole and the secret passage leading back to the Shattered Sanctum.
Physical layout
The entrance opens into a short corridor with small rooms on either side. The western room contains a wooden chest with valuables. The eastern room contains a healing potion and a broken cabinet with three random scrolls. If the goblins are still alive and the area remains under their control, taking these items can count as a transgression.
Beyond the entrance is the main enclosure. The goblins use one cage for the worgs and another for prisoners. Halsin is in the prisoner cage when the party first arrives, disguised as a Cave Bear. The far cage contains Ferr and Tale, two young worgs described as offspring of Klaw, the worg found elsewhere in the Goblin Camp.
The eastern upper level contains the prison cell used for arrested party members. Beneath its stairs is a storage area with additional provisions and healing potions.
---
Standard route from the Goblin Camp
The door is near Minthara’s headquarters. If the camp’s alarm has not been raised, goblins generally allow a recognised visitor or apparent True Soul to pass. The party can enter through dialogue, disguise, stealth or violence depending on earlier choices.
The Shattered Sanctum itself has several possible entrances from the Goblin Camp, including the Heavy Oak Doors, a passageway and the upper cracked wall. These routes are part of the parent area and are not additional entrances into the Worg Pens.
The reliable route is
- 01Enter the Goblin Camp.
- 02Enter the Shattered Sanctum through one of its available entrances.
- 03Cross the sanctum towards the eastern side.
- 04Enter through the ornate door at approximately X: 342, Y: 32.
- 05Continue through the antechamber into the Worg Pens.
Arrest route
A character may also reach the Worg Pens after being arrested inside the Goblin Camp or Shattered Sanctum. This can occur through certain crimes, failed situations involving Priestess Gut or other interactions that result in imprisonment.
An arrested character is taken to the prison cell rather than arriving in the main pen chamber. From there, the player can escape, search the cell and reach the rest of the Worg Pens.
Secret route out of the prison
Inside the prison cell is a corpse concealed in a mysterious hole at approximately X: 416, Y: -44.
The passage is effectively one-way. It cannot be opened from the antechamber side, so it is primarily an escape route from the prison rather than an alternative entrance into the Worg Pens.
---
Secret route out of the prison: steps
- 01Interact with the hole.
- 02Pull out the dead elf.
- 03Use Speak with Dead if desired.
- 04Destroy or clear the partially blocked hole.
- 05Crawl through the passage.
- 06Emerge in the Shattered Sanctum antechamber at approximately X: 346, Y: 14.
Goblin personnel
The pens are run by a small group of goblins rather than one of the three major Goblin Camp leaders.
Beastmaster Zurk
Zurk is the principal beastmaster and one of the main combatants in the Halsin encounter. He carries the Linebreaker Boots.
Butcher Vrak
Vrak works alongside Zurk and is involved in managing the prisoners and feeding the worgs. He joins the fight when Halsin is freed.
Warrior Plig
Plig patrols near the entrance. A Prison Key can be looted from him.
Brawler Birka
Birka supervises the goblin children who torment Halsin. When Halsin is released, he may kill Birka immediately, depending on how the encounter begins.
One and Three
These two goblin children throw stones at Halsin through the cage. They attempt to flee and summon help when combat begins. If they escape successfully, additional guards may enter from outside the pens.
Sharp-eye Neem, Sharp-eye Eef and Sharp-eye Nass
These guards are not normally central participants in the initial scene. They may be drawn into combat if the children get away and raise the alarm. Their presence is therefore conditional rather than guaranteed.
Halsin
Halsin is the First Druid of the Emerald Grove. He is found in the Worg Pens in bear wild shape, and his captors do not initially realise that the “bear” is a humanoid druid. With Speak with Animals active, the player can understand his request for help.
After his rescue, Halsin explains that he came to the Goblin Camp while investigating the tadpoles and was captured. He asks the party to deal with the goblin leaders to protect the Emerald Grove. He can become a temporary companion, although taking him through the camp causes him to attack goblins on sight.
Worgs
They are hostile participants in the rescue fight if the pens are opened or combat begins. The two are identified as offspring of Klaw, who is associated with the wider Goblin Camp rather than the Worg Pens themselves.
Comprehensive named directory
Associated but outside the Worg Pens
The Worg Pens page also lists Nass, Neem and Eef as conditional characters, reflecting their ability to enter if the children summon help. It lists Taeglyn separately as a corpse available for Speak with Dead.
---
Starting the scene
Approaching Halsin’s cage normally triggers a conversation involving the Cave Bear, Birka and the goblin children. The available responses depend on dialogue choices, character abilities and the party’s alignment with the goblin side of the conflict.
The safest general approach is to arrive prepared for a fight and keep the children from escaping. Speak with Animals reveals that the bear is asking for assistance, but the spell is not required to free him.
Helping Halsin causes the goblins and both worgs to become hostile. If the encounter begins without the party directly speaking to him, Halsin breaks free on his first turn if possible and attacks the goblins.
Recommended rescue method
If the children flee, Neem, Eef and Nass may join. This does not necessarily make the entire Goblin Camp hostile, but it makes the local battle larger and less controlled.
For most parties
- 01Position the party near the cages before beginning the dialogue.
- 02Put a strong melee character near the goblin guards.
- 03Keep a ranged character near the children’s escape route.
- 04Use Speak with Animals if available to reveal Halsin’s request.
- 05Free Halsin or side with him in the dialogue.
- 06Defeat Zurk, Vrak, Birka, Plig and the worgs.
- 07Stop One and Three from escaping if possible.
- 08Speak to Halsin immediately after the fight.
Paladin oath warning
An Oath of the Ancients paladin should avoid attacking Halsin, throwing a stone at him or deliberately leaving him to the goblins. These choices are identified as oathbreaking actions for that subclass. The exact consequences depend on the game’s oath system and the player’s response afterwards, but this encounter is a poor place to test an oath-based roleplay choice casually.
If Halsin dies
If Halsin dies in the pens, Rescue the Druid Halsin can still be progressed in a limited way by using Speak with Dead on his corpse. This does not preserve the normal recruitment path, however. His survival is required for the later chain involving his return to the Emerald Grove and his Act Two storyline.
If the party reaches later Act One progression points without rescuing him, his dead body may remain in the cell. Travelling to the Mountain Pass or Shadow-Cursed Lands before dealing with his imprisonment can therefore close off the normal rescue outcome.

Fixed loot directory
The Worgfang is particularly easy to overlook. It is in a pile of bones rather than on a clearly marked corpse, and the pile may not be highlighted when item labels are shown. Search the cage manually after the fight.
Fixed loot directory
| Item | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beastmaster’s Chain | Wooden chest near the butcher’s block, around X: 378, Y: -44 | Fixed chest loot |
| Linebreaker Boots | Beastmaster Zurk | Looted from Zurk |
| Worgfang | Bone pile in the former worg cage, around X: 386, Y: -15 | Easy to miss because the bones may not highlight |
| Prison Key | On the table near the butcher’s area | Opens the prison cell |
| Prison Key | On Warrior Plig | Alternative source |
| Potion of Healing | Eastern entrance room | Fixed healing item |
| Three random scrolls | Broken cabinet in eastern entrance room | Random scroll selection |
| Camp Supplies | Barrel near the butcher’s block | Fixed area supplies |
| Suspicious Meat | Table near the butcher’s area | Can be used as camp supplies despite its description |
| Camp Supplies | Storeroom beneath the prison stairs | Prison-area supplies |
| Potions of Healing | Storeroom beneath the prison stairs | Prison-area healing items |
| Smokepowder Bomb | Prison-cell windowsill | Fixed item |
| Grease Bottle | Prison-cell windowsill | Fixed item |
| Smokepowder Bomb | Spider Silk Cocoon hanging beneath the prison ceiling | Fixed item |
Nearby but not part of the Worg Pens
The antechamber outside the pens contains a skeleton in an open sarcophagus with the Ring of Poison Resistance. This item is close enough to be confused with Worg Pens loot, but it belongs to the Shattered Sanctum antechamber.

Inside the Worg Pens
---
Inside the Worg Pens: steps
- 01Enter the antechamber and note the nearby Ring of Poison Resistance, but do not confuse it with Worg Pens loot.
- 02Enter the pens through the ornate door.
- 03Search the western side room for its chest.
- 04Search the eastern room for the healing potion and random scrolls.
- 05Avoid stealing in front of surviving goblins unless you are prepared for a transgression.
- 06Move towards the central cages and trigger the Halsin scene.
- 07Free Halsin and defeat the local goblins and worgs.
- 08Check whether One and Three escaped. If they did, prepare for Neem, Eef and Nass.
- 09Speak to Halsin after the battle.
- 10Loot Zurk for the Linebreaker Boots.
- 11Open the wooden chest near the butcher’s block for the Beastmaster’s Chain.
- 12Take the Prison Key from the table or Plig.
- 13Search the worg cage’s bone pile for Worgfang.
- 14Inspect the upper prison cell and the storeroom below it.
- 15Remove the dead elf from the hole and use Speak with Dead if desired.
- 16Clear the secret passage if you need a route back to the Shattered Sanctum.
Rescue the Druid Halsin
This is the location’s central quest connection. The party may learn that Halsin is missing through conversations in the Emerald Grove, particularly with people such as Nettie or Rath. He is then found in the Worg Pens in bear form.
Successfully rescuing him leads to a discussion of the goblin leaders and the threat to the Emerald Grove. Halsin can wait in the pens while the party deals with the rest of the Shattered Sanctum, or he can temporarily accompany the party. Recruiting him as a full companion happens later and depends on his survival and the completion of connected Act One and Act Two objectives.
Save the First Druid
The Worg Pens are the immediate location for the rescue portion of Save the First Druid. Freeing Halsin advances the objective, but the broader quest remains tied to defeating the goblin leadership and resolving the Grove conflict.
Defeat the Goblins
The pens are one piece of the wider operation against the Goblin Camp. Killing the local guards here does not by itself defeat the goblin leaders. The three principal leaders are elsewhere in the Shattered Sanctum:
The order in which the party handles them can affect whether the camp remains neutral, becomes partially hostile or turns completely hostile. That wider state belongs to the Shattered Sanctum and Goblin Camp, not to the Worg Pens alone.
Save the Refugees
The Worg Pens contribute to the goblin-versus-Grove storyline, but the location does not independently resolve Save the Refugees. The final outcome depends on decisions across the Emerald Grove, Goblin Camp and Shattered Sanctum.
---
Goblin transgressions
Taking items while goblins remain alive can be treated as a transgression. The Worg Pens are therefore not always a safe looting area immediately after entering. If the party wants to avoid combat, inspect containers carefully and use stealth or wait until the guards are no longer present.
The children’s escape
One and Three can call for help. This is one of the most important combat-state changes inside the area. A party that focuses entirely on the adult goblins may allow the children to flee, bringing additional guards into the fight.
Worgfang
The dagger is not placed in a conventional chest or on a highlighted body. Search the bone pile in the worg cage even after the item labels appear to show nothing useful.
The prison passage
The dead elf and the mysterious hole are easy to overlook, especially if the party enters through the ordinary door and never gets arrested. The passage is useful for escape and exploration, but it is not a second normal entrance from the Shattered Sanctum.
Halsin’s progression state
Halsin’s condition changes according to when the party visits:
---
Before leaving the Worg Pens, confirm that you have:
---
Are the Worg Pens part of the Goblin Camp or the Shattered Sanctum?
Both descriptions are useful at different levels. Geographically, they are inside the Goblin Camp’s temple complex. In the game’s location hierarchy, they are a child area of the Shattered Sanctum, and they can only be reached from that area.
Can I reach the Worg Pens without fighting the Goblin Camp?
Yes. You can enter the wider Goblin Camp and Shattered Sanctum through dialogue, disguise, stealth or alternative routes. Reaching the pens peacefully does not guarantee that the Halsin encounter will remain peaceful, because freeing him normally starts combat with the local guards.
Do I need Speak with Animals to rescue Halsin?
No. Speak with Animals allows the party to understand the bear’s dialogue, but Halsin can still be freed through other dialogue options or direct action.
Do I have to kill Ferr and Tale?
They normally become hostile during the rescue fight, but the game allows different approaches to the encounter. If they are involved in combat, they are ordinary enemies rather than bosses.
Is there a boss in the Worg Pens?
There is no named boss encounter in the same sense as Minthara or Dror Ragzlin. Beastmaster Zurk is the most prominent local combatant, supported by Vrak, Plig, the other goblins and the worgs.
Can Halsin become a companion after being rescued here?
Not immediately as a permanent party member. He can temporarily join after his rescue, but his full recruitment depends on later progression, including the goblin leadership outcome and the Act Two Shadow Curse storyline.
Can I return to the Worg Pens later?
Usually yes while Act One remains available, although the contents and occupants change according to the party’s actions. If Halsin is rescued, killed or left behind, later visits will not reproduce the original encounter exactly.
