Key takeaways

  • Wyrm’s Rock Fortress is a complete region, not merely the audience chamber Its scope includes the island exterior, the fortress ground floor, mess hall, Audience Hall, upper levels, rooftop, prison and the hidden route towards the Wyrmway.
  • The fortress sits between two bridges The southern bridge leads to Wyrm’s Crossing and Rivington; the northern bridge leads towards the Lower City.
  • The first entrance is deliberately restricted The drawbridge is raised during Gortash’s ordination, but the party can enter with a pass, an urgent report, a Lower City pass, dialogue checks, arrest or several unconventional routes.
  • Do not rush through the Audience Hall Speaking to Ulder Ravengard there can start or advance Free Counsellor Florrick, and it is the first major conversation with the Duke in the fortress.
  • Gortash’s alliance is progression-sensitive Entering the Iron Throne after his warning, attacking or disabling his Steel Watch, or completing certain related quests can cancel the agreement.
  • The prison is both a story location and a consequence location It houses Florrick, Otto Ott, Marvin the Unusual Skull and any party member arrested for offences committed in Rivington, Wyrm’s Crossing or the fortress itself.

About this guide

Scope: Baldur’s Gate 3, base game, Act Three. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Gortash’s ordination, Ulder Ravengard, Wyll’s companion quest, Counsellor Florrick, the Wyrmway, Gortash’s alliance, the Steel Watch and several progression-sensitive outcomes.

Overview

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress is the fortified island that controls passage between Wyrm’s Crossing and Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. It is not the same location as Wyrm’s Crossing, although the two areas are directly connected. In practical terms, the fortress is both a military stronghold and a major story hub: the party enters it to witness Enver Gortash’s ordination, meet the enthralled Grand Duke Ravengard, negotiate with Gortash and access the prison beneath the fortress. It also contains a hidden route into the Wyrmway, making it central to Wyll’s personal story.

Subareas within the fortress

Wyrm’s Rock island exterior

The exterior cliffs can be explored with flight, Feather Fall, enhanced jumping, teleportation and similar movement. The western side contains climbing routes, a small beach, a dirt mound, a mousehole and a route that can lead towards the Wyrmway. The eastern side includes a wall breach leading into the prison’s storage area. A rope ladder on the eastern cliffs leads to a trapped chest.

The island exterior is useful for players who want to bypass the main entrance, reach the prison without passing through the reception rooms or approach the fortress from an unexpected angle. Some routes require Perception checks, movement spells or careful jumping.

Ground floor

The ground floor is built around a tunnel joining the two drawbridges. The fortress’s main rooms are positioned on either side of this passage.

The southern side contains the reception area and Flaming Fist administrative rooms. The northern side contains the barracks and routes towards the upper floors. Steel Watchers stand in and around the tunnel, so even a successful infiltration can result in an automatic conversation when the party approaches one.

First floor

The first floor contains the Mess Hall and kitchen. Bodyguards and attendants representing Baldur’s Gate’s patriar families wait here while their masters attend the ceremony. Conversations with these visitors can affect companion approval, especially when the Steel Watch is discussed.

Mizora can be found near the route to the Audience Hall if Wyll is alive. Speaking to her advances Wyll’s story and sets up a later camp conversation concerning Ulder Ravengard.

Audience Hall

The Audience Hall is on the second floor. It is the ceremonial heart of the fortress and the location of Gortash’s ordination as Archduke.

The party witnesses the ceremony the first time it enters, regardless of when it arrives. Gortash interrupts the proceedings to speak with the party and offers an alliance. The exact conversation changes according to the protagonist’s origin and the presence of companions such as Wyll or Karlach. A Dark Urge character also receives additional context about their former connection to Gortash and the Dead Three conspiracy.

Ulder Ravengard is present during the ceremony. He is under the influence of his tadpole and publicly supports Gortash. If Wyll is present, however, certain dialogue options reveal that the Duke’s subjugation is not absolute. Speaking to Ravengard about Florrick can begin Free Counsellor Florrick if she has not already been rescued.

This conversation is missable in a practical sense. If the party leaves the Audience Hall without speaking to Ravengard, he does not simply remain available there for a later attempt. The first Audience Hall visit is therefore worth treating as a story checkpoint rather than a room to rush through.

Top floor and rooftop

The top floor contains Gortash’s private chambers, antechamber, rooftop, side towers and bell tower. After the ordination, Gortash moves here and remains until the party confronts him or fulfils the conditions of their agreement.

Gortash’s chambers contain six busts of notable Baldur’s Gate leaders, including the figure known as the Cockeyed Stranger, an image associated with Bane. The chambers are defended by Black Gauntlets, Iron Consuls and a Steel Watcher. They also contain Gortash’s devices, personal objects and several valuable containers.

Wyrm’s Rock Prison

The prison is the fortress’s basement. It can be reached from the reception room by descending the spiral stairs, or by infiltrating the exterior wall breach.

The prison has a main corridor, cells and guard areas. It is the location for:

The prison is also the ordinary route towards the Wyrmway.

---

Top floor and rooftop: Possible routes to the upper levels include

  1. 01
Entering through the main double doors.
  2. 02
    Lockpicking a side door.
  3. 03
    Climbing towards the bell tower.
  4. 04
Using ladders, scaffolds or movement spells from outside.
  5. 05
Reaching the upper level from the north-west side of the Audience Hall.

The normal entrance

When the party first approaches from Wyrm’s Crossing, the drawbridge is raised because Gortash’s ordination is about to begin. The entrance is guarded by Blaze Elin, other Flaming Fists and three Steel Watchers. The quest Find a Way into Wyrm’s Rock Fortress begins as the party tries to pass the checkpoint.

The front gate can be passed by using one of the following:

The exact dialogue options depend on which passes and quest items the party has collected. The quest can be completed through any successful entry method, rather than requiring every route.

Bypassing the checkpoint

The party can descend from the Wyrm’s Crossing side onto the rocky footing of the fortress. Flight, Feather Fall, Misty Step, jumping enhancements and similar abilities make this easier. One exterior route reaches the prison through a breach, while another can bring the party to a balcony behind the Audience Hall.

Entering through the prison

The exterior breach is on the eastern side of the fortress. It requires the party to reach the lower cliff, detect the crack and pass through into the prison’s storage area. The prison can also be approached from inside the fortress through the reception-room stairs.

A party entering through the breach should be prepared for guards in the storage and corridor areas. Stealth, disguise, deception, invisibility and lockpicking are all practical approaches. The prison entrance is not a completely safe back door, but it avoids the most public part of the fortress.

---

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress is controlled by two overlapping security forces.

Flaming Fist

The Flaming Fist maintains the ordinary guard presence, runs the reception area and barracks, manages the prison and protects Gortash’s ceremony. Many guards have named identities rather than functioning as generic soldiers.

The reception room contains the quartermaster and two groups of citizens waiting to be judged for offences. The barracks contain sleeping or off-duty Fists as well as Fist Reynash, who is attempting to steal from a fellow guard’s chest. The Reynash incident can be resolved through intimidation, blackmail, waking the barracks or reporting him to his superiors.

Steel Watch

Steel Watchers reinforce the fortress’s main tunnel, bridges and Audience Hall. Their presence affects both normal exploration and Gortash’s political deal. An aggressive approach in the Audience Hall can turn into a large battle involving Steel Watchers, Flaming Fists and members of the patriar entourage.

If the party plans to preserve its agreement with Gortash, do not attack his forces or proceed into the Iron Throne after he warns the party. The bargain is also cancelled by several Steel Watch and Grand Duke-related quests.

---

Flaming Fist and fortress personnel

The following named personnel are associated with the fortress or its immediate security operations:

Some are placed in the reception room, barracks, bridges, mess hall or prison. Their exact availability can change after violence, arrest, quest progression or changes to the Steel Watch.

Gortash’s Black Gauntlets and Iron Consuls

Named Bane-aligned personnel associated with the upper fortress include:

They are not ordinary residents. Most are guards, attendants or combatants tied to Gortash’s administration and the defence of his personal areas.

Prisoners and prison-associated characters

Otto Ott is unusual because he does not necessarily want to be rescued. He has become accustomed to prison providing food and shelter. Marvin is a talking skull inhabited by a wizardly spirit. If a character is arrested, Marvin offers riddles and a possible route towards escape, although wrong answers trigger tricks rather than immediate assistance.

Visitors in the Mess Hall

The first-floor Mess Hall contains members of the patriar households and their retainers. Named visitors include:

These visitors are not fortress staff and should not be confused with Flaming Fists. Their conversations provide social context about the ceremony, Gortash’s rise and the Steel Watch.

---

Arkleia Oloril

Arkleia Oloril is the fortress quartermaster and the only verified trader inside Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. She sells weapons and armour. She is located behind the counter in the reception room.

The party can attempt to persuade her to display her stock. A successful approach can also provide the Charlatan inspiration event Nothing’s Not for Sale. Her inventory should be checked before major story changes, since traders can become unavailable after violence or progression.

Services that are not present

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress is not a shopping district. The following establishments belong to Wyrm’s Crossing, not the fortress:

Their traders and services should not be included in a fortress directory merely because the two regions are adjacent.

Services that are not present

Find a Way into Wyrm’s Rock Fortress

This is the entry quest. It begins at the blocked entrance and is resolved when the party enters the fortress by a pass, report, dialogue solution, secret route or another successful method. It is not necessary to complete every listed objective.

Get Gortash’s Netherstone

The quest brings the party to the Audience Hall, where Gortash is being ordained. After the ceremony, the party’s objective becomes confronting Gortash and eventually claiming his Netherstone.

The Audience Hall is therefore not merely a cutscene location. It establishes the political arrangement that defines much of Act Three and gives Gortash an opportunity to offer his alliance.

Consider Gortash’s Bargain

Gortash offers to cooperate if the party kills Orin and brings him her Netherstone. He expects the party to leave him and his Steel Watch alone while pursuing that objective.

If Karlach is present when the party attempts to negotiate after obtaining the stones, she may provoke a confrontation unless told to stand down. Doing so has serious approval consequences with her.

Free Counsellor Florrick

Florrick is imprisoned in Wyrm’s Rock Prison after the quest is initiated, unless she was dealt with earlier. The party has five days, measured by long rests, to rescue her before the quest reaches its failure state.

The prison can be entered through the fortress reception area or by the exterior breach. Florrick’s cell can be opened with lockpicking or through other escape methods. The quest is particularly important for players pursuing Wyll’s personal story and the fate of Baldur’s Gate’s leadership.

The Grand Duke and Wyll

Wyll’s story intersects with the fortress in several ways:

For a Wyll-focused playthrough, bring Wyll to the fortress and speak with both Mizora and Ravengard before leaving.

The Grand Duke and Wyll: steps

  1. 01
Mizora appears near the Audience Hall.
  2. 02
Wyll can react to the Duke’s condition.
  3. 03
The party can speak with Ravengard during the ceremony.
  4. 04
Mizora later presents a major choice concerning Wyll’s pact and his father.
  5. 05
The Duke’s eventual fate is tied to the Iron Throne, Gortash and the Steel Watch.

Wyrmway

The Wyrmway is accessed through the prison and is part of Wyll’s companion quest. It leads to the Dragon’s Sanctum and related trials. The route is hidden rather than presented as an ordinary fortress service, so players who only follow the main bridge may miss it.

---

The fortress contains ordinary equipment, documents, quest objects and high-value unique items. Some can be purchased, some are found in containers and some are carried by characters.

Notable fixed items

The eastern beach chest containing the Scroll of Cone of Cold is trapped with Chain Lightning. The item Just So You Don’t Forget is also associated with that chest. Inspect and disarm it rather than opening it casually.

Books, notes and documents

The fortress contains numerous written records. Verified examples include:

Audience Hall and upper areas

The Stock Haul For Armoury is especially useful as environmental evidence. It describes the equipment needed by the fortress guards and mentions supplies designed to reduce the effects of fire, including armour likely corresponding to the Flame Enamelled Armour.

---

Trapped eastern beach chest

The chest on the eastern beach is openly visible but trapped. Opening it without disarming it triggers Chain Lightning. Search the area carefully, especially if arriving by flight or Feather Fall, because the chest is positioned away from the most obvious fortress routes.

Exterior wall breach

The breach provides a stealth-oriented route into the prison. It is detected with a Perception check and is easy to overlook if the party remains on the main road.

Western mousehole and Wyrmway route

The western cliffs contain a mousehole and a dirt mound. The mousehole is part of the hidden route towards the Wyrmway. It may require a suitably small form or other means of interacting with the opening.

Barracks theft

Fist Reynash is attempting to pick the lock of Manip Bakshi’s chest while other guards sleep. The party can intervene, blackmail Reynash, wake the barracks or report him. This is a small local event, but it illustrates the fortress’s internal corruption and can provide inspiration for certain backgrounds.

Gortash’s chambers

The upper level is heavily guarded and contains the most valuable fortress loot. It is also a poor place to improvise if the party is attempting to maintain Gortash’s agreement. Reaching the chambers is not automatically the same as openly starting a fight, but stealing, trespassing or attacking his guards can alter the political situation.

---

Story-first route

This route gives the clearest introduction to the fortress and preserves the major conversations.

Story-first route: steps

  1. 01
Obtain an entry pass or persuade the outer guards.
  2. 02
Enter the fortress and allow Gortash’s Steel Watcher to initiate its conversation.
  3. 03
Visit the Mess Hall and speak with Mizora.
  4. 04
    Enter the Audience Hall.
  5. 05
Watch the ordination and speak with Gortash.
  6. 06
Speak directly to Ulder Ravengard before leaving.
  7. 07
Return to Mizora after the ceremony.
  8. 08
Decide whether to explore the prison and upper floors immediately or continue into the Lower City.

Wyll and Florrick route

This route prioritises companion dialogue and reduces the chance of overlooking Florrick.

Wyll and Florrick route: steps

  1. 01
    Bring Wyll.
  2. 02
Enter through the reception room or the exterior prison breach.
  3. 03
Visit Florrick’s cell if her quest is active.
  4. 04
Speak with Mizora near the Audience Hall.
  5. 05
    Attend the ordination.
  6. 06
    Speak with Ravengard.
  7. 07
Continue Wyll’s camp conversation and later rescue objectives.

Stealth and collection route

---

Wyrm’s Rock Fortress changes substantially depending on the order in which Act Three quests are completed.

Stealth and collection route: steps

  1. 01
Reach the exterior cliffs using Feather Fall, flight or teleportation.
  2. 02
Search the western and eastern beaches.
  3. 03
    Disarm the trapped eastern chest.
  4. 04
Enter the prison through the wall breach.
  5. 05
Explore the reception room and barracks.
  6. 06
Reach the upper floor through the Audience Hall or exterior scaffolds.
  7. 07
Loot Gortash’s upper chambers only if the party accepts the likely political consequences.
  8. 08
Return through the fortress tunnel and continue towards the Lower City.

Before the ordination

The fortress is initially closed from the main bridge. The party must solve the entrance problem. Gortash’s ceremony has not yet taken place, and the upper fortress is not functioning as his post-ordination residence.

During and immediately after the ordination

Gortash offers his alliance, Ravengard is present and Mizora begins the next stage of Wyll’s story. This is the best time to speak with all three major story figures.

After disrupting the Steel Watch

The fortress’s security situation changes, and Gortash’s bargain is no longer available in its original form. This may also affect access to certain guards and interactions.

After attacking Gortash

The fortress becomes a hostile location. Named guards, Steel Watchers and Gortash’s personal defenders may become enemies, while ordinary dialogue and trading opportunities can be lost.

After progressing the Grand Duke storyline

Ravengard may no longer be available in the Audience Hall. Treat the first ceremony visit as the safest opportunity to speak with him directly.

Before leaving Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, consider checking the following:

---

Is Wyrm’s Rock Fortress the same as Wyrm’s Crossing?

No. Wyrm’s Crossing is the bridge district between Rivington and the fortress. Wyrm’s Rock Fortress occupies the fortified island beyond it. They are adjacent regions with separate maps and different named directories.

Can I enter without a pass?

Yes. The party can use dialogue, a report, a Lower City pass, a secret route, arrest or movement abilities to bypass the main checkpoint.

Where is the prison?

The prison is beneath the fortress. Its normal entrance is in the reception room, down a spiral staircase. It can also be entered from outside through a wall breach on the eastern side.

Can I rescue Florrick from the fortress?

Yes. Once Free Counsellor Florrick is active, she is imprisoned in the north-western cell. The quest has a five-long-rest time limit after she is imprisoned.

Should I disable the Steel Watch before meeting Gortash?

Usually not if you intend to preserve his alliance. Disabling the Steel Watch cancels the agreement and changes the fortress’s political and combat state.

Is there a shop inside the fortress?

Yes. Arkleia Oloril is the fortress quartermaster and sells weapons and armour. Other named merchants frequently associated with this part of Act Three are in Wyrm’s Crossing, not Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.

Can I reach the Wyrmway from here?

Yes. The route begins through Wyrm’s Rock Prison and continues into the hidden areas beneath the fortress. It is tied to Wyll’s quest and the Dragon’s Sanctum.

---

Wyrm’s Rock is presented as both a practical military chokepoint and a symbolic guardian of Baldur’s Gate. Its position in the middle of the river allows it to regulate movement between the outer approaches and the city proper. The local legend of a bronze dragon defending the city gives the fortress an older, almost mythic identity beneath its modern Flaming Fist administration.

The wider Forgotten Realms material also describes Wyrm’s Rock as a formidable fortress on a rocky island where bridges meet, with the bronze-dragon story treated as local tradition. Baldur’s Gate 3 adapts that idea into a fully explorable Act Three location, turning the old defensive landmark into the stage for Gortash’s rise, Ravengard’s captivity and Wyll’s family crisis.
