Key takeaways
- The prison is the basement of Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, not a separate city jail or the whole fortress complex.
- Counsellor Florrick is imprisoned here after the quest begins She must be rescued within five long rests unless the quest is started after rescuing Ulder Ravengard from camp, which avoids starting the timer.
- There are five cells, but their occupants depend on the player’s choices and progression. Florrick, Otto Ott, Arfur Gregorio’s corpse and an arrested party member can all occupy cells in different circumstances.
- The eastern foundation breach is the easiest covert entry route from outside It leads into the prison storeroom and allows the party to bypass the fortress’s drawbridge and front entrance.
- The Wyrmway entrance is in the western block, behind two dragon-head torches that must be relit with lightning damage.
- Arrested characters cannot fast-travel or go to camp while inside, but the prison offers several escape methods, including the unusual talking skull Marvin.

Baldur’s Gate 3, base game, Act Three
Introduction
Wyrm’s Rock Prison is the basement jail beneath Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, the heavily guarded stronghold between Rivington and the Lower City. It is a compact but unusually useful location: it serves as the destination for arrests in the surrounding area, the setting of the time-sensitive Free Counsellor Florrick quest, a route into The Wyrmway, and a possible infiltration route into the fortress itself.
The prison should not be confused with the whole of Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. The fortress includes the reception areas, Flaming Fist quarters, mess hall, Audience Hall, Gortash’s quarters, the roof and the external approaches. The prison is specifically the basement area, consisting of the main cell corridor, guardroom, storeroom, western block and the passages leading towards The Wyrmway.
Named directory: prison locations and features
The prison contains several functional spaces, but it has no ordinary shop, inn, healing service or purchasable property. The storeroom is a security-sensitive food store rather than a business or service location.
---
Route 1: Enter through Wyrm’s Rock Fortress
The straightforward route begins in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. From the reception room, take the spiral stairs in the far corner to reach the prison entrance. The door is guarded by Breva Brightmoon, who may be asleep.
Several dialogue options can let the party pass without immediately turning the guards hostile. Depending on what the party knows, possible approaches include claiming to be visiting Otto Ott, claiming that Duke Ravengard sent the party to interrogate Florrick, saying that the party is there about Arfur Gregorio, or using a DC 15 Persuasion or Intimidation check. The party can also pickpocket the prison key from Breva while she sleeps.
This route is useful when the fortress itself is already accessible, but it places the party directly inside a guarded area. If Florrick is the objective, save before opening her cell, because her release can make the guards hostile.
Route 2: Exterior foundation breach
The most practical stealth route begins outside the fortress, on the Rivington side. Jump or descend from the eastern side of the fortress gate using Fly, Feather Fall or another suitable movement method. A Perception check reveals a crack in the outer wall at approximately X: 42, Y: 190. This leads into the prison’s storeroom.
The storeroom has a weak northern wall. Breaking it open leads to a short cave and another breach in the fortress exterior, providing a useful escape route. If the storeroom door is closed, suspicious noise from the wall breach may not attract the guards in the corridor, although this should not be treated as an absolute guarantee in every situation.
Once inside
- 01Enter the storeroom through the breach.
- 02Lockpick or otherwise open the storeroom door.
- 03Avoid or deceive the guards in the side corridor.
- 04Pass Fist Ivarus.
- 05Continue north towards the cells and guardroom.
- 06Use the same route to leave, or proceed towards the Wyrmway entrance.
Route 3: Get arrested
A party member who commits a crime in Rivington, Wyrm’s Crossing or Wyrm’s Rock Fortress and accepts arrest is sent to Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Drinking Hoots’ Hooch can also result in a character waking in the prison through the Hoots’ Hooch: Blackout event.
This route is not simply a failure state. It gives the arrested character access to a special interaction with Marvin the Unusual Skull, who can teleport them out of the cell after a riddle game. However, the character receives the Fugitive condition after escaping.
Route 4: Entry from the prison side into The Wyrmway
The prison is also a gateway to The Wyrmway. In the western block, two dragon-head torches are mounted on the southern wall. Relighting them with lightning damage opens the route. The action can attract Ivarus’s attention if he sees spells or projectiles being used, but he does not object to the party walking through the opened passage.
---
The prison’s population changes according to the party’s actions. Some characters are permanent guards, while others appear only after a quest, arrest or particular outcome.
Flaming Fist personnel
The Flaming Fist operates the prison and controls the corridors, cells and entrance. The most important named guards are:
If the party enters peacefully, sneaks in successfully or provides a plausible explanation, Saunder, Creekrider and Jagic remain in the guardroom rather than immediately attacking.
Flaming Fist personnel
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Breva Brightmoon | guards the normal entrance from the fortress reception room. |
| Fist Ivarus | patrols the main and side corridors. |
| Fist Saunder | sits in the guardroom. |
| Fist Creekrider | sits in the guardroom. |
| Fist Jagic | sits in the guardroom. |
Prisoners and story-associated occupants
Counsellor Florrick
Florrick is held in the north-western cell during Free Counsellor Florrick. Her imprisonment is not permanent. Once the quest has begun, the party has five long rests to save her, unless the quest is initiated by speaking to Ulder Ravengard at camp after rescuing him, which does not begin the timer.
Otto Ott
Otto Ott occupies the north-eastern cell. He is an elderly man who treats imprisonment as a dependable source of food and accommodation. The party can use him as part of an excuse when speaking to Breva, claiming that the character is Otto’s child. If the party tries to release Otto during Florrick’s escape, he complains about being disturbed and refuses to leave.
Arfur Gregorio’s corpse
Arfur’s corpse appears in the northern cell if the party convinced the toymaker to turn himself in. This is a progression-dependent placement, not a permanently present prisoner.
Arrested party members
A party member arrested for an offence in the surrounding Act Three areas appears in the eastern cell. The cell can also be used by the Hoots’ Hooch blackout event.
Marvin the Unusual Skull
Marvin is an enchanted skull found on broken shelves in the eastern cell. His spirit claims to belong to a wizard who was imprisoned there after a night of drunken debauchery. A DC 15 Arcana check reveals more about the enchantment. A DC 18 Persuasion check can convince Marvin to speak more plainly.

There are five cells at the end of the main corridor. Their possible occupants are:
The eastern cell also contains the unusual skull and a chained skeleton. The skeleton can be looted for the note The True Life of ‘Lord’ Gortash.
Named directory: prisoners and story occupants
| Cell | Possible contents |
|---|---|
| Western cell | Empty |
| North-western cell | Counsellor Florrick during her rescue quest |
| Northern cell | Arfur Gregorio’s corpse, if he turned himself in |
| North-eastern cell | Otto Ott |
| Eastern cell | Arrested party member, or a character affected by Hoots’ Hooch: Blackout |

Starting the quest
Free Counsellor Florrick can begin after reading an Execution Notice in the Lower City or after speaking to Ulder Ravengard immediately after the coronation. The notices state that Florrick will be executed within five days, represented by five long rests. If too many long rests pass, she dies and the quest fails. Starting the quest from Ravengard at camp after rescuing him does not start the timer.
If the party does not know where Florrick is, the Prison Log in Wyrm’s Rock Prison can confirm her location once the quest is active. Fist ‘Edge’ Arensen near the Lower City gallows can also provide information.
Note

Florrick rewards and consequences
The principal reward is Florrick’s survival and the continued availability of her support later in the story. If she is not rescued in time, she dies before escaping or is executed, depending on the quest state. The prison itself does not contain a separate conventional quest reward chest for freeing her.
Florrick cannot be kept as a permanent party member while pursuing the Wyrmway-related quest. She may be left waiting near the entrance, but she will not accompany the party through the entire area.
---
Marvin’s interaction occurs specifically when a party member has been arrested. Entering the prison by stealth or through the external breach does not produce the same riddle sequence. In those circumstances, Marvin instead dismisses the party member in his formal, archaic manner.
Marvin asks two riddles. The first answer is:
The riddle describes something battered by blows, crowned by repeated strikes and unable to move. Other suggested answers, such as “a king” or “a shield”, are incorrect.
The result depends on how many riddles the imprisoned character solves:
The escaping character receives Fugitive for 20 turns. Turn-based mode does not automatically begin after the teleport. Refusing to play or stopping after the first riddle counts as solving neither riddle.
Successfully persuading Marvin to use plainer speech, and correctly solving the riddles, can also provide companion approval. The interaction is therefore useful even when the party could escape by lockpicking or magic.

Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Enter through the fortress door or the exterior breach. The exterior breach is generally safer if the drawbridge or fortress guards are causing problems.
Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Reach the cell corridor. From the storeroom, open the locked door and pass the guards, or enter through the reception-room stairs.
Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Open Florrick’s cell. Her cell can be lockpicked with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.
Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Convince Florrick to escape. She initially lacks the will to continue. Dialogue options involving Ravengard, Wyll or the needs of Baldur’s Gate can persuade her. Several options use Persuasion, Intimidation, History or Wyll-specific dialogue, with checks including DC 7, DC 10 and DC 15 depending on the line chosen.
Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Use the storeroom breach as the exit. The weak wall in the storeroom gives the cleanest escape route. Florrick can also be moved using Invisibility, Misty Step or Dimension Door. Guards only become hostile if they see her, and they do not pursue her after she has escaped through the exterior crack.
Recommended rescue route: steps
- 01Speak to Florrick outside the fortress. She thanks the party and leaves to seek allies in the Upper City.
Florrick rewards and consequences
| Riddles solved | Result |
|---|---|
| Both | Teleported beside the evidence chests; Haste and Greater Invisibility for 10 turns |
| One | Teleported near the guardroom entrance; Haste and Mirror Image for 10 turns |
| None | Teleported near the guardroom entrance; Haste for 10 turns |
Evidence and equipment chests
The main corridor contains an Evidence Chest and an Equipment Chest beside the cells. When a character is arrested, confiscated belongings are stored there. Retrieving multiple items may trigger one Stealth check, so avoid casually opening the chests while guards are nearby. Invisibility can help, but the chests should still be approached carefully.
Confirmed prison items and documents
The contents of the evidence and equipment chests are state-dependent because they are populated by the arrested character’s confiscated inventory. They should not be treated as fixed loot.
Necromancy of Thay warning
A reported bug can cause Necromancy of Thay to disappear if the character who read it is arrested and their possessions are transferred to the prison chests. Because the book is bound to its reader and cannot normally be removed from the inventory, this may interfere with the Unlock the Ancient Tome quest. If the book matters to the playthrough, avoid arresting its reader or make a backup save before consenting to imprisonment.
---
Wyrm’s Rock Prison is small, but its patrol pattern makes careless movement dangerous.
Main security risks
The prison is particularly suitable for stealth parties because of its narrow corridors, isolated storeroom and exterior breach. Invisibility is helpful for escorting Florrick, but it is not a substitute for planning an escape route.
---
The Wyrmway
The western block leads to The Wyrmway, an important location in Wyll’s companion quest. The entrance is not an ordinary open doorway. The two dragon-head torches must be lit again with lightning damage. This makes the prison a required or highly convenient access point for that questline.
Wyrm’s Rock Fortress
The prison offers a way into the fortress without using the main drawbridge. However, entering the prison does not give access to every part of the fortress automatically. The reception room, barracks, mess hall, Audience Hall and Gortash’s upper quarters remain distinct areas with their own guards, routes and progression states.
Arrest progression
Crimes committed in Rivington, Wyrm’s Crossing or Wyrm’s Rock Fortress can lead here. This makes the prison a reusable state-based location rather than a one-time dungeon. A character may enter as a prisoner, escape, return later, or encounter different cell occupants after progressing related quests.

If rescuing Florrick
- 01Read an Execution Notice or speak to the relevant quest character.
- 02Avoid unnecessary long rests.
- 03Enter through the outer breach if the fortress gate is inconvenient.
- 04Open Florrick’s cell.
- 05Use a dialogue option that mentions Ravengard, Wyll or the city’s need.
- 06Leave through the storeroom breach.
- 07Speak to Florrick outside the fortress.
If infiltrating the fortress
- 01Reach the rocky footing beside the fortress using Fly, Feather Fall or another movement method.
- 02Search for the foundation crack.
- 03Enter the storeroom.
- 04Close or manage the storeroom door before breaking the weak wall.
- 05Pass Ivarus and the guardroom.
- 06Use the prison stairs or move into the wider fortress.
- 07Keep the prison breach available as an escape route.
If deliberately getting arrested
---
Before leaving Wyrm’s Rock Prison, check the following:
---
If deliberately getting arrested: steps
- 01Make sure important quest-bound items are safe, particularly Necromancy of Thay.
- 02Accept imprisonment rather than resisting.
- 03Search the eastern cell for Marvin.
- 04Persuade him to speak plainly if desired.
- 05Answer the riddles, with “an anvil” as the first answer.
- 06Retrieve confiscated equipment from the relevant chest.
- 07Leave before the Fugitive condition expires or guards detect the escape.
Is Wyrm’s Rock Prison the same as Wyrm’s Rock Fortress?
No. Wyrm’s Rock Prison is the fortress basement. The fortress also contains the reception room, Flaming Fist quarters, mess hall, Audience Hall, upper roof and Gortash’s personal areas.
Can I fast-travel from inside?
No. Fast travel and going to camp are unavailable while the party is inside the prison.
Where is Counsellor Florrick?
She is in the north-western cell once Free Counsellor Florrick is active.
How long do I have to save Florrick?
Normally, five long rests after starting the quest. Starting the quest through Ulder Ravengard at camp after rescuing him avoids starting this timer.
Can Otto Ott be rescued?
The party can open his cell, but Otto refuses to leave during the Florrick escape sequence. He is not another recruitable prisoner.
How do I open the Wyrmway entrance?
Use lightning damage on the two dragon-head torches in the western block.
What is the answer to Marvin’s first riddle?
An anvil.
What happens if I enter without being arrested?
Marvin does not offer the full riddle escape sequence. That interaction is tied to being arrested and placed in a cell.
