Key takeaways

  • The Bloodied Shrine is a subarea of the Shattered Sanctum, not a separate outdoor location.
  • It is found in the eastern side of the sanctum, east of the room where Priestess Gut can apply the Brand of the Absolute.
  • Abdirak offers a three-hit ritual that can grant Loviatar’s Love.
  • Loviatar’s Love gives +2 to Attack Rolls and Wisdom Saving Throws while at 30% hit points or less.
  • Reading On Receiving Her Grace before the ritual allows the participant to choose between the Ritual Dagger and Ritual Axe instead of Abdirak’s usual weapon.
  • Abdirak and the shrine can become unavailable after the Goblin Camp storyline reaches certain resolutions, so visit the room before completing that arc if you want the encounter and loot.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act One content in the base game, including Abdirak’s ritual, its rewards, and changes caused by resolving the Goblin Camp and Emerald Grove storyline.

Overview

The Bloodied Shrine is a small, self-contained location inside the Shattered Sanctum, the inner temple area of the Goblin Camp in Act One. It is a shrine to Loviatar, the Forgotten Realms goddess of pain, and is occupied by her servant Abdirak.

The shrine is easy to overlook because it is only one room within the larger Shattered Sanctum. It is not the same place as the nearby torture chamber, Priestess Gut’s rooms, the Defiled Temple, or the wider Goblin Camp. Its main purpose is a dialogue encounter: a willing party member can undergo Abdirak’s ritual and receive the permanent Loviatar’s Love bonus. The room also contains several ritual weapons and books, including Loviatar’s Scourge, which can be purchased from Abdirak.

Location and boundaries

The Bloodied Shrine is an individual room within the Shattered Sanctum. The Shattered Sanctum is the former Selûnite temple occupied by the goblins inside the Goblin Camp. It contains the sanctum’s nave, side rooms, prison areas, the spider pit, the goblin leaders’ quarters and routes to the Defiled Temple and Worg Pens. The Bloodied Shrine should therefore be treated as a child area rather than as a synonym for the entire sanctum.

The shrine lies on the eastern side of the main sanctum, close to the room where Priestess Gut conducts her activities. In practical terms, it is beside the torture area, but the two spaces are separate:

Some guides use the shrine as a navigation reference for reaching Liam because the rooms are adjacent. That does not make Liam or the torture chamber part of the shrine itself.

Access and navigation

The normal route is through the Goblin Camp and into the Shattered Sanctum.

The shrine does not require a special key or a separate quest prerequisite while the Shattered Sanctum remains accessible. The precise route can vary depending on whether the goblins are neutral, hostile or already in combat with the party.

The shrine is close to several important sanctum routes:

These are nearby connections, not included subareas of the Bloodied Shrine. The larger Shattered Sanctum also has routes to the Goblin Camp exterior and other internal areas, including the Defiled Temple and Worg Pens.

Access and navigation: steps

  3. 03
Move into the central sanctum area.
  4. 04
Locate the eastern side rooms near Priestess Gut’s area.
  5. 05
Enter the room containing Abdirak and the bloodied shrine.

Residents and characters

Abdirak

Abdirak is a human servant of Loviatar and the shrine’s principal resident. He presents pain as a path to clarity and offers to demonstrate his faith through a ritual of controlled punishment.

Abdirak is both an NPC and a temporary merchant. His most important interaction is not combat, but the ritual that can award Loviatar’s Love. He can also sell Loviatar’s Scourge, an uncommon mace with a dangerous area-of-effect property.

Conditional characters

The shrine page also records Grush and Torturer Spike as characters who may appear in or around the shrine depending on the state of the nearby torture encounter. They are not permanent residents of the shrine.

Neither character is required for the main Loviatar ritual.

The Loviatar ritual

Speak with Abdirak and agree to endure his teachings. The selected party member is struck three times. The exact dialogue can vary by class and character, but the important result is that the participant must satisfy the ritual’s success conditions across the three stages.

The three stages do not all have to use the same type of response. The relevant outcome is whether each stage produces the reaction Abdirak wants. Barbarians receive an advantage on the Intimidation options, while Bard dialogue can provide particularly reliable responses. Monk responses that suppress visible pain are counterproductive because Abdirak wants the participant to react to the punishment.

Removing armour is not necessary to receive Loviatar’s Love, but it improves the ritual’s dialogue checks.

Loviatar’s Love

Successfully completing Abdirak’s ritual grants the permanent Loviatar’s Love condition to the participating character:

The condition is intended as a risk-reward effect. It does not provide a general bonus at all times. It becomes active only when the character is seriously wounded. The condition can also be lost if the character dies, even if they are later revived.

These inspirations depend on the participating character’s background. They are separate from the mechanical effect of Loviatar’s Love.

Recommended preparation: Before beginning

  1. 01
Make sure the intended participant has enough hit points to survive the strikes.
  2. 02
Save the game if you want to preserve the reward.
  3. 03
Read On Receiving Her Grace from the nearby table.
  4. 04
Remove the participant’s armour if you want the temporary Ardent Apostle condition and its bonus to Intimidation and Performance.
  5. 05
Consider using a character with strong Charisma skills, a Barbarian or a Bard.
  6. 06
Avoid selecting options that deliberately suppress or negate the pain response.

Books and ritual equipment

On Receiving Her Grace

On Receiving Her Grace is found on a table in the shrine, around X: 334, Y: -21. It is a book of Loviatarite instruction containing diagrams and advice about the forms of pain used in worship.

Reading it before starting the ritual unlocks an additional dialogue option. This lets the participant choose the weapon Abdirak uses:

The choice changes the damage type, not the reward conditions. The book is therefore useful if the party has resistance, protection or other preparation against one of those damage types.

Loviatar’s Scourge

Loviatar’s Scourge is an uncommon mace carried by Abdirak. It deals its normal bludgeoning damage and adds necrotic damage. Its Willing Whip property grants the wielder resistance to necrotic damage but also deals additional necrotic damage to nearby creatures, including the wielder.

The weapon can be purchased through Abdirak’s barter screen. If Abdirak equips it during the ritual, it may temporarily be unavailable for purchase until the interaction is complete. It is a risky weapon around allies because its area effect can damage nearby party members.

Weapons

The exact placement and availability of the weapons can depend on whether Abdirak is currently using them for the ritual. The shrine’s loot listing includes all four weapons or weapon-related entries, but they should not be treated as four permanently loose items sitting in identical positions.

Progression changes and missable content

The Bloodied Shrine is most reliable to visit before finishing the Goblin Camp storyline.

According to the researched character data, Abdirak leaves the Shattered Sanctum when the game loads the area after the goblin leaders have been killed or after Minthara has been successfully defeated at the Emerald Grove. In practical play, this means that completing the central Goblin Camp or grove conflict can remove the opportunity to speak with him in the shrine.

The exact timing of NPC departure can depend on when the relevant area is loaded, so the safest approach is to visit Abdirak before killing the goblin leaders or concluding the grove assault storyline.

Lore and atmosphere

The shrine illustrates how the goblins have repurposed the remains of a former Selûnite temple. The wider Shattered Sanctum was once dedicated to Selûne, but its current occupants have filled the ruin with Absolute iconography, torture equipment and shrines to other powers. Abdirak’s presence is particularly distinctive because Loviatar is not the same deity as the Absolute, and his visit feels like an opportunistic religious intrusion into the goblin-occupied temple.

The shrine’s design, bloodstained furnishings and ritual implements reinforce Loviatar’s doctrine that pain can reveal truth or provide spiritual clarity. The game presents this through Abdirak’s unsettling but mechanically optional ceremony rather than through a conventional combat encounter.
