About this guide

Base game, Act Three. Spoilers for Raphael’s bargain, Kith’rak Voss, Orpheus and the House of Hope.

Overview

The Devil’s Den is a small but important location in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a private parlour on the upper floor of Sharess’ Caress, the pleasure house in Wyrm’s Crossing. The room is currently occupied by Raphael, who uses the establishment as his base of operations in Baldur’s Gate.

Despite its name, the Devil’s Den is not a separate region in the same sense as the House of Hope, Avernus or the Devil’s Fee. It is an individual room within Sharess’ Caress, and Sharess’ Caress is itself a location within Wyrm’s Crossing. This guide therefore treats the room as a child-area of Sharess’ Caress rather than expanding its boundaries to include the entire brothel or Wyrm’s Crossing.

The room is the setting for one of Act Three’s most consequential negotiations. Raphael offers the party the Orphic Hammer, which can break the chains imprisoning Orpheus, in exchange for the Crown of Karsus after the defeat of the Netherbrain. The party can accept the contract, refuse it, or later obtain the hammer through another route.

Where the Devil’s Den is

The Devil’s Den is one of several themed rooms on the upper floor of Sharess’ Caress. Other rooms in the same broader complex include Nymph’s Grotto, Elminster’s Library and Underdark Pleasures. The Devil’s Den is distinct from all three.

Unlike the other themed playrooms, the Devil’s Den is not normally locked. It is decorated in dark red and blood-like colours, with flower petals scattered across the floor. The setting is deliberately more personal and theatrical than the ordinary rooms of Sharess’ Caress. It functions as Raphael’s parlour rather than as a normal service room for the brothel.

Nearby but separate locations

The Devil’s Fee is a separate business in the Lower City operated by Helsik. It is one route into the House of Hope, but it is not physically connected to the Devil’s Den. The House of Hope is Raphael’s realm in the Nine Hells, accessed later through infernal magic rather than by walking through the Devil’s Den.

Nearby but separate locations

Route from Rivington

The South Span Checkpoint is the normal access point between Rivington and Wyrm’s Crossing. It is controlled by the Flaming Fist and Steel Watch, although the party can bypass or overcome the checkpoint in several ways. Once the party has reached Wyrm’s Crossing, movement between the crossing and the checkpoint is generally much less restrictive.

Access alternatives

The party does not have to rely exclusively on the checkpoint dialogue. Depending on the character’s abilities and the state of the area, Wyrm’s Crossing can be entered by climbing, jumping or using movement abilities. The checkpoint’s guards may react differently to stealth or trespassing than they do to an ordinary entry, so bypassing a gate is not always consequence-free.

The ordinary approach is

  1. 01
Travel through Rivington towards the South Span Checkpoint.
  2. 02
    Gain access to Wyrm’s Crossing.
  3. 03
Enter Sharess’ Caress, whose main entrance is on the eastern side of the crossing.
  4. 04
Speak with Mamzell Amira near the entrance or Korrilla at the bar.
  5. 05
    Ascend to the upper floor.
  6. 06
Enter the room labelled Devil’s Den.

Finding the room inside Sharess’ Caress

Mamzell Amira can mention that a devil is staying upstairs. Korrilla can also direct the party towards Raphael. These conversations are useful signposts, but they are not strictly required if the party explores the upper floor independently.

The Devil’s Den is one of the clearly labelled rooms on the upper floor. It is not the same as Elminster’s Library, despite both rooms having a literary or private-study atmosphere in parts of their decoration.

Raphael

Raphael is the Devil’s Den’s principal occupant. He is a cambion devil who has appeared earlier in the game and is connected to several infernal bargains. In this room he presents himself as a possible solution to the party’s problems with Orpheus.

Raphael possesses the Orphic Hammer, the weapon capable of breaking the magical restraints around Orpheus in the Astral Prism. His proposed payment is the Crown of Karsus, which is being used to control the Elder Brain. The offer is intentionally dangerous: the party obtains an immediate and powerful tool, but promises a future relic of enormous importance to Raphael.

During the negotiation, companions can comment on the proposal. Gale is especially likely to voice an opinion, although the precise reactions depend on the party’s composition and circumstances. The negotiation also temporarily interferes with the Emperor’s ability to communicate with and read the player character.

Kith’rak Voss

If Kith’rak Voss is alive and the relevant githyanki storyline has progressed, he can be found in the Devil’s Den attempting to bargain with Raphael. Voss wants access to the Orphic Hammer so that Orpheus can be freed, but Raphael considers Voss unable to offer a suitable price.

When the party enters, Raphael dismisses Voss and turns his attention to the player character. Voss then waits elsewhere in Sharess’ Caress for the outcome of the conversation.

His presence is therefore progression-dependent rather than guaranteed in every playthrough. It is tied to the Help Kith’rak Voss and wider githyanki questline, including the party’s earlier dealings with Vlaakith, Lae’zel and the Astral Prism.

Sharess’ Caress personnel

Mamzell Amira and Korrilla are associated with the parent location, Sharess’ Caress, rather than being residents of the Devil’s Den itself. They are important because they can direct the party towards Raphael.

The distinction matters: neither character needs to be treated as a resident of the Devil’s Den.

Deal with the Devil

Entering the room begins or advances Deal with the Devil. Raphael’s offer has three essential parts:

The player can refuse. Refusing does not immediately remove Raphael from the room or permanently close the negotiation. Raphael says that he will remain available in case the party changes its mind. The party can return and accept the deal later, at least until progression into the House of Hope makes the relevant choice unavailable or changes the situation.

Accepting the deal

The contract is not merely flavour text. It creates a real progression problem and leads into the House of Hope storyline.

Refusing the deal

If the party accepted the deal but wants to conceal that fact from the Emperor, the conversation can involve difficult Deception or Performance checks. The exact available checks depend on what the party claims and what actually happened.

Deal with the Devil: steps

  1. 01
He gives the party the Orphic Hammer.
  2. 02
The party agrees to hand over the Crown of Karsus after the Netherbrain is defeated.
  3. 03
The agreement is formalised through an infernal contract.

Help Kith’rak Voss

The Devil’s Den is a major point in Help Kith’rak Voss. Voss’ goal is to free Orpheus, and Raphael’s possession of the Orphic Hammer appears to offer a direct solution.

If the party signs Raphael’s contract and then shows Voss the hammer, Voss can reward the party with the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane. If the party refuses Raphael, Voss later relocates to the Lower City Sewers and can provide the sword after the party obtains and shows him the hammer through another route.

Escape the Deal

Escape the Deal begins automatically if the party signs Raphael’s contract. Its central objective is to find a way into the House of Hope and destroy the contract.

The party can learn about this route through Korrilla, Yurgir in some circumstances, or by discovering Helsik at the Devil’s Fee. Helsik is a diabolist who can open a portal to the Hells. She normally demands a large payment, although there are alternative negotiation options involving gold or the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength.

The Devil’s Den itself does not contain the portal to the House of Hope. It is the place where the bargain is made; the later infernal infiltration takes place elsewhere.

---

The room contains more than the negotiation scene. Players should search the furniture and desk before leaving.

Three letters concerning Blaze Portyr

Three letters on the desk are addressed to people identified by chess-piece code names:

The letters concern attempts to strengthen Blaze Portyr’s public reputation and support her possible promotion to Marshal. Each recipient is promised cancellation of an infernal debt in return for carrying out the requested action.

These documents provide a glimpse of Raphael’s wider influence. His schemes in Baldur’s Gate extend beyond the party’s central crisis and involve manipulating civic reputation, religious messaging and the city’s press.

Other recorded contents

The Invasion Plans can appear at a specific location within the room, recorded at approximately X: -20, Y: 112. Coordinates are useful for players using a map or reference tool, but they are not necessary for ordinary navigation.

Directory: verified named items and documents

The contract and hammer are progression rewards rather than ordinary items lying in the room from the beginning.

Recommended order

For a first visit, a sensible sequence is:

Recommended order: steps

  1. 01
Speak with Mamzell Amira or Korrilla to establish that Raphael is upstairs.
  2. 02
Explore the upper floor of Sharess’ Caress before entering the Devil’s Den.
  3. 03
Enter the room and allow the conversation with Raphael and Voss to play out.
  4. 04
Decide whether to accept or refuse the deal.
  5. 05
Search the desk, wardrobes and other containers.
  6. 06
Speak with Voss after the negotiation if he remains available.
  7. 07
If refusing the deal, make a note that Raphael may still be approached again.
  8. 08
Before entering the House of Hope, resolve any decisions you want to make about the contract and the Orphic Hammer.

Practical checklist

---

The Devil’s Den is strongly affected by quest progression.

Voss’ presence

Voss is not guaranteed to be present. His appearance depends on his survival and on the earlier githyanki storyline. If the party has not followed the relevant sequence, the room may contain Raphael without Voss.

Accepting the contract

Accepting Raphael’s bargain changes the active quest state immediately. It is possible to try to invalidate the agreement later, but doing so requires reaching the House of Hope and destroying the contract. Players who want to explore Raphael’s realm should avoid treating the first conversation as the end of the storyline.

Refusing the contract

Refusing is not the same as abandoning the Orphic Hammer permanently. The party can pursue the House of Hope and steal the weapon instead. This route changes the circumstances of the later questline and avoids handing Raphael the Crown of Karsus through a signed bargain.

Entering the House of Hope

Once the party begins the House of Hope infiltration, the Devil’s Den negotiation cannot be treated as an endlessly repeatable choice. The game’s quest state changes around Raphael, the contract and the hammer. For that reason, players should make a manual save before agreeing to the deal or beginning the House of Hope route.

---

The Devil’s Den is an unusually direct expression of Raphael’s character. Sharess’ Caress is a public pleasure house, but Raphael’s room is not presented as a normal commercial chamber. Its red decoration, scattered petals and private arrangement make it feel like a stage built for seduction and negotiation.

That contrast reflects the structure of Raphael’s bargains. He offers pleasure, safety or power in a setting designed to make dangerous agreements feel intimate and attractive. The room also shows that his influence in Baldur’s Gate is broader than his interest in the player character. The letters about Blaze Portyr demonstrate that he is cultivating political outcomes through debt, reputation and carefully worded instructions.

The Devil’s Den is therefore both a quest room and a miniature portrait of Raphael’s method: personal presentation on the surface, complicated obligations underneath.

---

Is the Devil’s Den in the House of Hope?

No. The Devil’s Den is in Sharess’ Caress, in Wyrm’s Crossing. The House of Hope is Raphael’s domain in the Hells and is accessed later through the Devil’s Fee or another route.

Can I enter the Devil’s Den without speaking to Mamzell Amira?

Yes. Amira and Korrilla provide directions and quest context, but the room itself can be found by exploring the upper floor of Sharess’ Caress.

Is the Devil’s Den locked?

Unlike several other themed rooms in Sharess’ Caress, the Devil’s Den is normally not locked.

What does Raphael want?

He wants the Crown of Karsus after the Netherbrain is defeated. In exchange, he offers the Orphic Hammer immediately.

Should I accept Raphael’s deal?

That is a story choice rather than a simple mechanical recommendation. Accepting gives immediate access to the hammer but creates a binding contract. Refusing keeps open the option of entering the House of Hope and stealing the hammer instead.

Can I still get the Orphic Hammer if I refuse?

Yes. The hammer can be obtained through the House of Hope storyline without accepting Raphael’s bargain.

What happens to Voss if I refuse?

Voss may later relocate to the Lower City Sewers, where he can continue the quest and reward the party after they obtain the Orphic Hammer.
