About this guide
Base game, Act Three location guide. Major spoilers: this guide discusses the Open Hand Temple murders, Ffion Goldgrind’s fate, Astarion’s connection to Cazador, and the Bhaalist investigation.
Overview
Fraygo’s Flophouse is a modest boarding house in Wyrm’s Crossing, the bridge district between Rivington and the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. It looks like an ordinary, overcrowded lodging house, with a communal mess hall, a kitchen, rented bunks and tired staff. In practice, it is one of Act Three’s most useful investigation sites. The building connects three separate story threads:
The flophouse is also a good example of Baldur’s Gate 3’s layered environmental design. The public areas are busy and mundane, while the upper floors contain private conversations, tenant records, locked chests and a concealed murder scene. Its boundaries are fairly narrow: the flophouse itself is a three-storey building, with a small amount of associated exterior space immediately outside and a balcony route into the upper levels. It should not be confused with the wider Wyrm’s Crossing district, Sharess’ Caress across the road, South Span Checkpoint to the south, or the Open Hand Temple in Rivington.
The building is a fixed, authored location, not a randomly generated inn. Its vendors, named residents, story objects and major discoveries are placed in consistent areas, although ordinary loot and merchant stock may vary with trading rules and game state.
Location and boundaries
Fraygo’s Flophouse stands on the western side of Wyrm’s Crossing, just north of the ramparts at South Span Checkpoint. Sharess’ Caress is across the road, while the bridge and checkpoint routes lead towards the rest of Wyrm’s Crossing and the Lower City. The building belongs geographically to Wyrm’s Crossing, not Rivington, even though one of its major quests begins at the Open Hand Temple in Rivington.
The location should be divided into four practical sections:
The balcony and back door are part of the flophouse’s access structure, not a separate named sub-location. The wider streets, South Span Checkpoint, Sharess’ Caress and the Open Hand Temple are neighbouring locations and should be explored separately.
Named exterior directory
Thodric Shedeveer is associated with the nearby street and offers to buy fresh fish. He is not a shop or service inside Fraygo’s Flophouse.

Reaching the flophouse
The simplest route is to enter Wyrm’s Crossing from Rivington, pass through or around South Span Checkpoint, and follow the western side of the bridge. The flophouse is near the checkpoint and opposite Sharess’ Caress.
If the party has already visited the tunnels beneath the Open Hand Temple, approaching the building may trigger a Perception check concerning its flower decoration. This is a useful visual clue that the Flowery Key found below the temple has a destination here.
The building can also be entered from above:
The outer balcony door on the first floor is locked, while the upper route can provide an alternative approach to the concealed hideout. Spatial movement, jumping and other traversal abilities may allow characters to reach the balcony without using the main entrance, but this is an access option rather than a separate quest route.
Reaching the flophouse: steps
- 01Reach the upper balcony from the outside.
- 02Use the unlocked or accessible back-door route into the lodging area.
- 03Continue upwards to the upper floors.
Floor-by-floor overview
Exterior frontage
Crak and Rilia stand near the entrance discussing the poor quality and limited availability of lodgings in the city. Their conversation establishes the flophouse as an overcrowded refuge rather than a respectable hotel. Rilia’s remarks also provide some of the building’s humour, contrasting the party’s willingness to investigate the place with her reluctance to share a bunkhouse with strangers.
No combat or mandatory interaction is required outside.
Ground floor: mess hall and kitchen
The ground floor is divided between a communal mess hall and a kitchen, with the main staircase between them. The reception and kitchen areas are active, ordinary parts of the building, making them useful for gathering local information before investigating the upper levels.
Traveller Griska is in the mess hall. She is a functioning merchant despite not necessarily being marked as a trader on the minimap. Her stock includes useful consumables, alchemical materials and tools.
Queelia Arvis works in the kitchen and sells Camp Supplies. The game does not treat every visible piece of food or kitchen equipment as a separate service, so the kitchen should be regarded as a Camp Supplies purchase point rather than a general-purpose food shop.
Drim and Rosanna are adventurers in the communal area. Talking with them can produce companion approval, with the available approval response depending on character class. The interaction is social rather than a quest requirement.
Dashkent Moliver, a flophouse employee, moves between the reception desk and kitchen. If the party has advanced the Open Hand Temple murder investigation far enough to know that the killer is associated with red clothing, Moliver can be questioned about it. His chest upstairs contains a note requesting a pay rise, adding a small piece of everyday tenant and staff detail.
First floor: lodgings and vampire-spawn encounter
The first floor is a divided lodging area with bunks and locked wooden chests. A corridor separates the two sides and is patrolled by Worker Bernyr. The corridor ends at a locked door leading towards the outer balcony, with a small bathroom on the opposite side.
The central event on this floor is the conversation between Dalyria and Pale Petras, two vampire spawn under Cazador Szarr. The encounter is especially valuable with Astarion in the party. They discuss Cazador’s planned ritual, the promised rewards for his servants and Astarion’s disappearance from their control. Their willingness to speak is partly shaped by how the party handles the conversation and whether Astarion is present.
This encounter is not merely flavour. It gives Astarion context about Cazador’s plans before the party reaches Cazador’s Palace and helps establish how the vampire spawn understand the ritual. The conversation can be resolved without fighting. The party should avoid treating the pair as ordinary hostile enemies unless deliberately choosing a violent outcome.
Worker Bernyr is a resident or worker associated with the lodging floor. The tenants’ records also name Bernyr, Ffion Goldgrind, Grishka and Rosanna, although a tenant list should not be assumed to mean that every person named in it is continuously present in the same room.
First-floor directory
The locked chests are not all equal in story importance. They are part of the lodging area’s ordinary property and may contain minor loot or tenant-related objects. Search them with care if you are comfortable stealing in a crowded building, but do not treat every chest as a required quest container.
Top floor: the hidden murder site
A ladder from the first floor leads to the topmost level. The most conspicuous object is a red-outlined wardrobe. Behind it is a concealed room connected to the serial murders and the Bhaalist plot.
The room can be opened in several ways:
The Flowery Key is found on Zomm in the tunnels beneath the Open Hand Temple. Its flower design and the matching decoration on the flophouse provide the intended connection between the two locations.
Inside the hidden room are documents and environmental clues identifying it as a murderer’s hideout. Important objects include:
The Bloodstained Parchment is the most important document for the murder investigation. It contains a list of intended victims and evidence connecting the killings to a larger Bhaalist operation. It can be shown to Investigator Valeria as part of the investigation and may help progress the chain towards Gauntlet Devella and the Lower City.
Finding Ffion Goldgrind
The corpse is hidden under the bed. Finding it requires attention rather than simply opening the wardrobe:
Ffion was the “Stern Librarian” associated with Elminster’s Library. Her death explains why the library is vacant when the party later reaches it and resolves the missing-librarian thread through evidence found in the flophouse. Ffion’s body can also be relevant to the separate mind flayer encounter if the party is pursuing that activity.
Top-floor directory
Ffion’s Key is found under the bed on her corpse. It opens Ffion’s chest on the second floor of the flophouse, separate from the Flowery Key’s function. This distinction matters: the Flowery Key opens the hidden room, while Ffion’s Key opens Ffion’s chest.
Finding Ffion Goldgrind
- 01Enter the concealed room.
- 02Search around the bed.
- 03Pass the Perception check to notice blood.
- 04Examine the blood.
- 05Pass the Investigation check, listed as DC 10, to identify that a body is hidden underneath.
- 06Pull out Ffion Goldgrind’s body.
- 07Use Speak with Dead if you want her account of the room and her death.
Characters and residents
Story-associated visitors and guests
Dalyria and Petras should be treated as story visitors rather than ordinary permanent residents. Their presence is tied to Astarion’s personal quest and Cazador’s ritual rather than to the flophouse’s normal tenancy.
Shops and services
Traveller Griska
Her stock is useful before entering the more dangerous parts of Act Three, particularly if the party is short of healing items, mobility consumables or lockpicking equipment. The exact availability and restocking behaviour can be affected by normal merchant mechanics. Griska also warns the party about the Open Hand Temple’s treatment of refugees, linking her ordinary trading dialogue to the district’s political and social tension.
Queelia Arvis
Queelia sells Camp Supplies. This is a limited, practical service rather than a full inn function. The party cannot rent a room, trigger a normal long rest inside the flophouse or establish it as a camp location.
Quests and progression
Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders
This is the flophouse’s central quest connection. The Flowery Key comes from the murder-related investigation beneath the Open Hand Temple. Matching it to the flophouse leads to the concealed room and its evidence.
If the party provides enough evidence, Valeria can recognise that Brilgor was not responsible for Father Lorgan’s murder and may provide a Lower City Pass or direct the party towards Gauntlet Devella. The exact later outcome depends on the order in which the party handles Valeria, Devella and the Bhaalist investigation.
Find the “Stern Librarian” Ffion
The flophouse reveals Ffion’s fate. If the party begins the search by speaking to Mamzell Amira at Sharess’ Caress, the investigation points towards Ffion’s rooms and possessions. If the party discovers the corpse first, it can still report the discovery and resolve the thread through the appropriate dialogue.
Investigate the Murders
The Bloodstained Parchment serves as hard evidence of the broader murder plot. Ffion’s corpse can also provide information through Speak with Dead, including the identity of her killer and the circumstances of her death. This makes the corpse more than a tragic environmental detail: it is an investigative witness if the party has the spell or an equivalent method.
Investigate Cazador’s Palace
Dalyria and Pale Petras provide information about Cazador’s planned ascension ritual. Bring Astarion if you want the strongest personal context and commentary. The scene does not replace the later palace investigation, but it helps explain what Astarion is confronting and why the vampire spawn are waiting in the flophouse.

Lore and atmosphere
Fraygo’s Flophouse is deliberately ordinary. Its mess hall, crowded bunks, petty staff complaint and tenant logs depict a working boarding house serving travellers, refugees and adventurers who cannot afford better accommodation. That mundane setting makes the upper-floor discovery more disturbing. The killer’s hideout is not in an abandoned crypt or obvious cult temple, but behind a piece of furniture in a building full of sleeping tenants.
The tenant records reinforce this contrast. Bernyr’s extended stay, Ffion’s overdue payment, Grishka’s uncertain lodging and Rosanna’s desire to leave quickly turn the building into a small social cross-section of Wyrm’s Crossing. The hideout’s documents then reveal that the same cramped building has been used to conceal evidence of a wider Bhaalist campaign.
The building also connects the district’s two major investigative pressures. From the Open Hand Temple comes the physical key and the murder evidence. From Cazador’s vampire spawn comes information about an entirely separate but equally personal threat. Fraygo’s Flophouse therefore functions as a hinge between local crime, city politics and companion progression.
