About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Three revelations, Shadowheart’s personal quest, Viconia DeVir, the fate of Shadowheart’s parents, the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, and the Mirror of Loss.
Overview
The House of Grief is a small Sharran front in the Steeps district of Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. From the street it presents itself as a charitable establishment that helps visitors cope with loss. In reality, it conceals the entrance to the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, the principal Sharran enclave in Baldur’s Gate and the centre of Shadowheart’s Act Three storyline.
The location is therefore broader than the visible house. For the purposes of this guide, House of Grief includes:
The nearby Rivington trader Ferg Drogher is covered only as an access-related connection. He is not part of the House of Grief itself.
---
The exterior House of Grief
The building stands at the far end of the Steeps, separated from the surrounding city by a water channel. A bridge leading from the area between Elerrathin’s Home and Lady Jannath’s Estate reaches the house’s porch. It is a detached, single-storey building with a small garden and one principal entrance.
The exterior is deliberately calm and respectable. Its plaque, garden and attendants support the impression that it is a counselling or healing establishment. The garden contains several named-looking flowers, including Bixa Root, Poppy Flower and Valerian Flower. These are renamed copies of Mergrass for gathering purposes rather than separate alchemical resources.
The underground cloister
The Cloister of Sombre Embrace is not a separate city district or an independent overworld region. It is a hidden underground complex reached from the House of Grief’s Mapping Room. The cloister functions as:
Viconia DeVir founded and developed the cloister and leads it as Mother Superior.
Included subareas
The Shadowfell, Lower City generally and Rivington are neighbouring or connected locations, not subareas of the House of Grief.

Finding the House of Grief
The most direct route is through the Steeps in the Lower City. From the nearby city streets, cross the bridge towards the isolated building. If Shadowheart’s quest is active, the location will normally be introduced through the Sharran lookout Ferg Drogher in Rivington.
Ferg is a trader encountered in the refugee camp. His real role is to watch for Shadowheart and direct her towards the House of Grief. His dialogue changes depending on whether Shadowheart embraced or rejected Shar. If she rejected Shar, he still directs the party there, but his attitude becomes hostile and he leaves afterwards.
Access-related characters
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Ferg Drogher | Rivington lookout, not part of the House of Grief |
| Mirie | visible attendant inside the house |
| Morann | named guard carrying a key for the inner doors |
| Afara | staff member |
| Wilbur | staff member |
Entering the Mapping Room
Mirie offers the party the Mapping of the Heart. Normally, the party pays 1,000 gold to proceed through the locked doors. The doors can also be lockpicked or opened with the appropriate key.
If Shadowheart is present, the staff recognise her connection to the cloister. Her previous choice between Shar and Selûne affects their tone and later scenes, but does not simply make the entire building inaccessible.
Inside the Mapping Room is a stone bench. The first character to sit on it becomes the subject of the ritual. Only one character can complete the ordinary Mapping of the Heart during a playthrough. Shadowheart has unique dialogue and does not undergo the standard version of the ritual if she takes the bench.
Opening the hidden passage
Recommended route
---
There are three practical approaches
- 01Complete the Mapping of the Heart. If Shadowheart undergoes the special interaction, Viconia appears through a projection and the route into the cloister opens.
Opening the hidden passage: steps
- 01Bring Shadowheart after mapping without her. If another character completes the ritual while Shadowheart is absent, Viconia identifies herself and orders the party to bring Shadowheart to the house. Bringing Shadowheart later reveals the route.
Opening the hidden passage: steps
- 01Find the hidden mechanism. A passive DC 20 Investigation check in the Mapping Room reveals a button near the movable brick wall. Shadowheart’s presence can also expose the route without the usual check. The mechanism becomes visible automatically if the party attacks and kills Mirie and her guards, but this makes the cloister permanently hostile.
Recommended route: For the most content, use
- 01Bring Shadowheart.
- 02Speak with Mirie.
- 03Let Shadowheart take part in the interaction.
- 04Enter the cloister peacefully.
- 05Explore the side rooms before approaching Viconia.
- 06Speak with Nocturne after the confrontation if she survives.
- 07Complete the Chamber of Loss sequence.
- 08Use the Mirror of Loss before leaving.
Mirie and the staff
Mirie, the Attendant of Grief, is the main representative of the public-facing establishment. She explains the house as a place where people can surrender painful memories and emotional burdens. Her books and the building’s literature reinforce the language of counselling and spiritual relief.
This is a deliberate deception. The house’s services help the Sharrans identify vulnerable people, gather information and support the cloister below. The Sharran “unburdening” is not a neutral therapeutic service.
Mirie is also a trader. Her stock consists mainly of books concerning different heartforms and the procedures associated with them. The house contains a locked Collections Lockbox behind the front desk. It cannot be lockpicked and is opened with the key carried by Mirie. Its contents include gold, valuables and random rare potions.
Named entries in the public building
The Mapping of the Heart
The Mapping is a dialogue ritual in which the Inquisitor asks questions designed to classify the participant’s emotional state into one of several heartforms. The result is not merely cosmetic. It can affect Viconia’s later use of specialised abilities in the confrontation below the house.
An Acolyte character who completes the ritual can receive the Rites of Loss inspiration. Shadowheart does not receive this inspiration if she is allowed to speak for herself instead of the player character being mapped.
The Mapping is optional. Players interested in avoiding its potential combat effects can use the Investigation route instead.
Exterior visitors
Two named NPCs stand outside or near the building:
These characters are associated with the location but are not members of the cloister’s main resident hierarchy.
---
Training areas
After the secret passage, the party reaches an underground antechamber with Sharran symbols and two locked rooms.
Infiltration Training
This room contains disguises, mannequins, shelves and practice chests. Shadowheart can identify the significance of the outfits with passive History checks. The room also contains:
The training-room doors require the key carried by Sentinel Fredrichk or a successful DC 15 Sleight of Hand check. The practice chests require higher lockpicking checks.
Interrogation Training
This is a small torture and interrogation room. It contains no major unique reward, but it has several pieces of Fire Amber and reinforces the cloister’s function as a training and detention site.
Main chamber
The main chamber is the cloister’s central space. It consists of a sunken floor, surrounding galleries and steep approaches. Viconia and the cloister’s combatants gather here for the confrontation connected to Shadowheart’s quest.
The layout is important tactically. The stairs and galleries create a strong defensive position, but they also allow enemies to attack from several directions. The room’s darkness effects and numerous spellcasters can quickly make an unprepared party lose control of the fight.
Practical combat advice
The exact enemy composition and combat difficulty vary by difficulty mode and game state. The names below are the verified named members associated with the cloister rather than a claim that every unnamed combatant is individually named.

Leadership
Viconia DeVir
Viconia is the Mother Superior of the Sharran cloister. She is also a returning character from earlier Baldur’s Gate continuity. In Baldur’s Gate 3, she has spent decades serving Shar and has become deeply resentful of Shadowheart, whom Shar selected as a possible successor.
Viconia’s history with Shadowheart is central to the location. She helped abduct Shadowheart, then raised and indoctrinated her as a Sharran. Shadowheart’s parents were imprisoned rather than killed, allowing Shar and Viconia to use them as leverage against her.
Viconia is both a story character and the major boss of the cloister. Her survival or death changes the rewards and later state of the area.
Nocturne
Nocturne is a familiar figure from Shadowheart’s past and is found in the dormitories. She does not join the main combat unless attacked. Speaking with her can complete A Familiar Face, and after the confrontation she can act as a trader selling potions and alchemical ingredients. She indicates that she plans to leave the cloister the following morning.
Shadowheart’s parents
The pair are held in the Chamber of Loss. Their fate depends on Shadowheart’s choices during the final sequence of her companion quest.
Named Sharrans
Sharran Novices
These names are associated with the Cloister of Sombre Embrace’s named residents and combatants. Some are encountered as enemies during the confrontation with Viconia, while others occupy the cloister’s rooms or guard its routes.
---
Dormitories
The dormitories are north of the central chamber. They initially remain closed and contain Nocturne and Viconia’s private quarters.
Library
The library lies south of the main chamber. It contains numerous books and documents on Sharran doctrine, the cloister’s operations and Shadowheart’s history. A locked opulent chest behind a column contains gold, random valuables and arrows. It requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check.
The books are especially worthwhile if you want the location’s narrative context rather than only its combat rewards.
Armoury
The armoury is south-east of the main chamber. It contains ordinary weapons, armour, camp supplies and several uncommon items. This is a functional storage and equipment area, not a merchant shop.
A wooden barricade at the far end conceals a route into the Night Orchid cave.
Night Orchid cave
The cave contains a small lake surrounded by Night Orchids. Its most notable feature is an abandoned picnic site connected to Shadowheart’s childhood. Documents at the site provide a clue for opening the Chamber of Loss.
The cave is easy to miss if the party heads directly towards Viconia. It is worth exploring before or after the main confrontation, provided the area is safe.
Named entries
---
Opening the Threshold of Loss
A locked door called the Threshold of Loss leads deeper into the cloister. Access depends on Shadowheart’s state and the party’s actions.
A Black Diamond is initially placed on the altar.
Chamber of Loss
The Chamber of Loss is the cloister’s innermost ritual and prison area. Its central discs hold the captives connected to Shadowheart’s story. Interacting with the prisoners begins the final sequence of Daughter of Darkness.
The Chamber of Loss is therefore both a story area and a source of optional lore. Search the cells and rubble before beginning the final interaction if you want to read the cloister’s records.
---
The Mirror of Loss is the most important optional reward in the location. It can grant permanent ability improvements after the character makes the appropriate dialogue choices and passes the relevant checks. A temporary penalty may apply before the benefit is secured. Each eligible character can use the mirror independently, including hirelings, making it potentially valuable for an entire party.
If Shadowheart becomes a Dark Justiciar, overthrows Viconia and sacrifices her parents, she can receive a special permanent +2 bonus without the normal curse sequence. The mirror’s possible bonuses correspond to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma.
Mirror checklist
---
Mirror checklist: Before using it
- 01Save the game.
- 02Decide which party members should receive permanent improvements.
- 03Bring characters with strong Religion or relevant skill bonuses.
- 04Read the available dialogue carefully.
- 05Do not assume the first interaction produces the best result.
- 06Check Shadowheart’s outcome before attempting to optimise her reward.
Investigate the House of Grief
This is the location’s principal area quest. Its major stages are:
The quest may be approached with or without Shadowheart, but her presence produces the fullest version of the story.
Investigate the House of Grief: steps
- 01Find the House of Grief.
- 02Speak with Mirie.
- 03Enter the Mapping Room.
- 04Open the hidden route.
- 05Reach the Cloister of Sombre Embrace.
- 06Confront Viconia.
- 07Decide how to deal with Shadowheart’s parents and Shar’s demands.
Daughter of Darkness
The House of Grief is the Act Three climax of Shadowheart’s companion quest. The quest’s background begins earlier, with Shadowheart learning that she was abducted and raised by Sharrans and that her parents remain alive in captivity. The House of Grief reveals the people responsible and provides the final choice over her allegiance and family.
A Familiar Face
Speaking to Nocturne in the dormitories can complete this smaller companion-related objective. Nocturne’s role is non-hostile unless attacked, and she can become a useful trader after the main confrontation.
Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia
If the party reaches Viconia without Shadowheart, Viconia demands that they bring Shadowheart to the cloister. This creates the Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia route. It is a progression branch rather than an extra physical area.
---
Major fixed rewards
Viconia’s Walking Fortress is associated with Viconia’s defeat and looting. The exact availability of rewards can depend on how the confrontation is resolved.
Other loot
Random containers should not be confused with fixed unique rewards. The practice chests, library chest and Collections Lockbox provide partly random contents, while named quest rewards and the Mirror of Loss have fixed narrative placement.
---
---
---
The House of Grief builds on the wider history of Shar’s cult and on Viconia DeVir’s earlier appearances in the Baldur’s Gate series. In Baldur’s Gate 3, Viconia’s history is presented as a continuation of her long association with Shar, although the game’s precise account of her later life reflects the continuity chosen for this title.
The cloister’s structure reflects Shar’s doctrine in practical form:
Shadowheart’s childhood picnic site is a deliberate contrast to the surrounding prison, torture rooms and ritual machinery. It shows that the cloister was not only a place of punishment. It was also the place where Shadowheart was raised, educated and separated from her original family.
---
For a thorough but efficient visit
- 01Speak to Arves and Lug outside. This captures their location-specific dialogue before the area changes.
Other loot: steps
- 01Enter peacefully and speak to Mirie. Buy any Mapping-related books you want and inspect the front desk.
Other loot: steps
- 01Complete or bypass the Mapping. Use Shadowheart for the fullest companion content. If you want to avoid the heartform-related combat effects, use the Investigation route.
Other loot: steps
- 01Explore the training rooms first. Collect tools, Fire Amber, books and notes. Unlock the rooms with Fredrichk’s key or Sleight of Hand.
Other loot: steps
- 01Enter the cloister’s main chamber. Be prepared for the major confrontation. Keep the party together.
Other loot: steps
- 01Search the dormitories. Speak with Nocturne and inspect Viconia’s quarters.
Other loot: steps
- 01Read the library documents. These provide some of the clearest information about the cloister and Shadowheart’s past.
Other loot: steps
- 01Explore the armoury and Night Orchid cave. Search the picnic site and collect the clues needed for the Chamber of Loss.
Other loot: steps
- 01Reach the Threshold of Loss. Use the key, lockpicking, Knock or the altar method as appropriate.
Other loot: steps
- 01Resolve the Chamber of Loss. This is the decisive Shadowheart sequence. Save beforehand.
Other loot: steps
- 01Use the Mirror of Loss. Optimise the party’s interactions only after confirming Shadowheart’s final state.
Is the House of Grief only the building above ground?
No. The visible building is the front, while the associated location includes the underground Cloister of Sombre Embrace and its connected rooms.
Do I need Shadowheart to enter?
No. You can enter through the Mapping of the Heart or by finding the hidden mechanism with Investigation. However, Shadowheart is strongly recommended because she provides the fullest dialogue and quest progression.
Can I avoid the Mapping of the Heart?
Yes. A successful Investigation check can reveal the button opening the passage. Starting a fight with the visible staff can also expose it, but this has serious consequences because the cloister becomes hostile.
Is Nocturne an enemy?
Normally, no. Nocturne remains in the dormitories and does not join the main fight unless attacked. After the confrontation she can become a trader.
What is the best reward?
The Mirror of Loss offers the most significant long-term benefit because it can grant permanent ability improvements. Viconia’s Walking Fortress is the location’s most notable equipment reward.
Should I kill Viconia?
That is a story and role-playing decision. Defeating her provides access to her equipment and resolves the cloister’s leadership, but Shadowheart’s subsequent dialogue and the fate of her parents depend on wider choices, not only on the battle itself.
