Key takeaways
- The Lustrous Lass is a quarantined ship in Grey Harbour Docks, not a separate district or a location within Rivington.
- It can be reached from the Counting House side or from the docks beside the Water Queen’s House, although both approaches involve restricted or awkward dock access.
- Crossing the ship can inflict Sea Plague through a DC 20 Constitution check The condition is a disease and can persist until cured by magic or a Long Rest.
- Four dead crew members carry journals that reveal the ship’s connection to Crone Island and the Gloom Crone.
- The Gilded Chest at the stern contains useful loot, but opening it releases a highly dangerous Cursed Imp.
- Killing the imp cleanses the ship of Sea Plague Picking up or sending the unopened chest to camp can delay the encounter, but opening it later still releases the creature.
About this guide
Base game, Act Three location guide. Spoiler warning: This article discusses the ship’s fate, its curse, the Sea Plague condition and the creature hidden in its treasure chest.
Overview
The Lustrous Lass is a small, quarantined ship found in the Grey Harbour Docks, a dockside subarea of Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. It is not a tavern, shop or broad neighbourhood. The location is the ship itself, together with its decks, cabins, corpses and the treasure chest at its stern. The surrounding harbour, the Counting House, the Water Queen’s House and the other docked vessels belong to neighbouring locations rather than to the Lustrous Lass proper.
The ship arrived in Baldur’s Gate after its crew died under mysterious circumstances. The Flaming Fist placed it under quarantine, and a warning sign tells visitors not to enter because of a suspected plague. In practice, the Lustrous Lass is a compact environmental mystery that turns into a dangerous encounter if you open the wrong chest.
Location boundaries and hierarchy
The Lustrous Lass is a child location of Grey Harbour Docks, which is itself part of the Lower City. The ship should not be treated as including the whole harbour, the passenger pier, the Water Queen’s House or the Counting House loading area.
This distinction matters because several nearby scenes take place on the docks but are not part of the Lustrous Lass encounter. For example, the passenger pier has its own refugees-and-smuggling interaction involving Dharin Brislen and Captain Sleam. That event belongs to Grey Harbour Docks, not to the ship.
Likewise, the Counting House docks contain locked chests, a watchtower and other ships. They provide one route towards the Lustrous Lass but remain a separate location with their own loot and security arrangements.
Neighbouring but separate
Access and routes
The ship has two documented approaches.
From the Counting House docks
The western docks of the Counting House provide the more direct route. A nearby ship can be used as a stepping stone, allowing the party to jump across to the Lustrous Lass. The docks are a restricted area, so guards may challenge or stop the party.
This route is convenient if the party is already exploring the Counting House, but it can lead to unnecessary trouble with the guards. The Counting House docks also contain other locked chests and a watchtower, so it is easy to mistake the entire dock complex for the ship’s location.
From the Water Queen’s House
A second route begins at the docks beside the Water Queen’s House. The party must cross sinking or damaged dock sections before reaching the area where the ship is moored. A barricade blocks the most obvious approach, and a sign warns that the vessel is under quarantine.
The Water Queen’s House approach is thematically clearer because it presents the ship as an officially sealed danger. It is less direct, however, and the dock layout can make movement awkward.
Suggested approach: For a clean exploration run
- 01Enter the Lower City and travel towards Grey Harbour Docks.
- 02Decide whether to approach from the Counting House side or the Water Queen’s House side.
- 03Save before boarding.
- 04Loot the corpses and read the journals before opening the chest.
- 05Prepare disease cures, healing and acid resistance or mitigation if available.
- 06Decide whether to fight the Cursed Imp immediately or postpone opening the chest.
- 07If fighting, clear the ship and confirm that the Sea Plague has been removed.
Geography and onboard layout
The Lustrous Lass is a compact ship rather than a multi-level dungeon. Its main points of interest are distributed between the crew’s bodies, a central storage area and the aft section.
The crew’s corpses are spread around the ship. Each named corpse provides both character context and a journal connected to the ship’s downfall. The middle storage cabin contains ordinary provisions rather than a major quest item. At the rear, the Gilded Chest appears to be a reward container but is actually the hiding place of the Cursed Imp.
The ship has no functioning services, vendors, beds, transport point or permanent friendly residents. Its apparent quarantine is represented by the warning sign and the disease mechanic rather than by a normal guard-controlled instance.
Residents, crew and bodies
There are no living residents aboard when the party arrives. The named occupants are dead crew members or investigators.
Harfang
Harfang was the captain of the Lustrous Lass. Her corpse lies aboard the ship and carries The Rest of My Life, a journal describing the bargain she made with the Gloom Crone and the worthless “gold” she received in return.
Dizby
Dizby was an older member of the crew who distrusted the decision to visit Crone Island. His corpse carries I Told Jorkens, a short journal warning that the captain should never have dropped anchor there.
Jorkens
Jorkens was a crew member who resented Dizby’s position and made his own bargain after the ship reached Crone Island. His corpse carries My Own Deal, which confirms that he acted independently and believed he had outsmarted the others.
Sister Penita
Penita was sent to investigate the quarantined ship after it drifted into harbour with its crew dead. Her journal, The Lustrous Lass, shows that she suspected more than ordinary food poisoning or disease, but she succumbed before completing her investigation.
Named entries directory
The ship’s dead are not normal conversational NPCs, recruitable characters or quest-givers. Their bodies function as environmental storytelling and sources of written evidence.
Factions and security
The Flaming Fist is the relevant authority around the ship. The vessel has been quarantined, and the warning sign explicitly presents entry as prohibited because of plague risk. The party does not need to complete a formal Flaming Fist investigation before boarding, but approaching from the Counting House side may bring the party into contact with guards because that wider dock area is restricted.
The Gloom Crone is not present on the ship. She is part of the ship’s backstory, revealed through the journals. Do not confuse her with a resident or boss encountered aboard the Lustrous Lass.
Sea Plague hazard
The ship is infected with Sea Plague. Characters traversing the ship must pass a DC 20 Constitution check or become infected. The condition is treated as a disease and can remain until removed by magic or a Long Rest.
The condition is a fixed environmental mechanic, not a random combat encounter. The party may fail the check while simply exploring.
The Cursed Imp
The Cursed Imp is hidden inside the Gilded Chest at the aft of the ship. It is significantly more dangerous than its size suggests and is designed to punish players who open the chest casually. It cannot be surprised, has a substantial initiative bonus and uses Caustic Retort, which reflects incoming damage as acid damage.
Safe handling options
The chest can be picked up without opening it, allowing the party to postpone the encounter. It can also be sent to camp. If the chest is opened later, the imp appears where the chest had been. This is useful if the party is unprepared, but it is not a way to remove the encounter permanently.
Combat advice
The encounter is particularly dangerous for parties that assume the ship’s main threat is merely a Constitution check.
Combat advice
- 01Make a manual save before opening the chest.
- 02Heal and restore key resources.
- 03Spread the party rather than clustering around the chest.
- 04Inspect the imp’s defensive effects before committing to repeated attacks.
- 05Be cautious with damage sources that may be reflected as acid.
- 06Use control, positioning and defensive buffs where possible.
- 07Loot the chest only after the fight is resolved.
- 08Recheck the ship for remaining items and confirm that the plague has been cleansed.
Loot and collectibles
The Lustrous Lass has modest physical loot but unusually strong narrative rewards. The most important items are the four crew journals.
Books and journals
All four books are common items with a listed value of 14 gp, but their real purpose is to explain the ship’s history.
Ordinary supplies
These are background provisions rather than unique rewards.
Gilded Chest
After dealing with the Cursed Imp, the aft chest contains:
The chest is the location’s main material reward, but the exact value of the gold is not the reason to rush into the encounter unprepared.
Books and journals
| Item | Source | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| I Told Jorkens | Dizby’s corpse | Warns against anchoring at Crone Island |
| My Own Deal | Jorkens’s corpse | Describes Jorkens’s personal bargain |
| The Lustrous Lass | Sister Penita’s corpse | Records the investigation and suspected supernatural cause |
| The Rest of My Life | Harfang’s corpse | Reveals the Gloom Crone’s false-gold bargain |
Story and lore
The journals present a clear progression of the disaster.
The ship visited Crone Island, where the crew became entangled with the Gloom Crone. Harfang accepted a bargain promising enough gold to last the rest of her life. The apparent fortune was mostly worthless material, leaving only a handful of genuine gold pieces. Jorkens also made his own deal, while Dizby had already warned against the voyage.
Afterwards, the ship drifted into Baldur’s Gate with its crew dead. Penita was sent to investigate and considered poison, pestilence and rotten fruit as possible explanations, but she also sensed a malicious supernatural presence. Her journal ends before she can finish the investigation.
The ship therefore works as a small, self-contained cautionary tale about bargains with hags or hag-like powers. The location does not require the party to visit Crone Island elsewhere in the game, and the journals are the principal way to reconstruct what happened.
Recommended full-clear route
- 01Save before boarding.
- 02Enter from either the Counting House docks or the Water Queen’s House side.

- 08If not, pick up the unopened chest or send it to camp.
- 09When ready, open the chest and fight the Cursed Imp.
- 10Loot the gold, Gold Ingot, Supreme Elixir of Arcane Cultivation and Wyvern Toxin.
- 11Rest or use appropriate magic if anyone contracted Sea Plague.
- 12Leave through the same dock network, remembering that the surrounding harbour remains a separate area.
