Key takeaways

  • The Morphic Pool is in the Undercity, not a separate wilderness region or an extension of the Temple of Bhaal.
  • It is accessed from the Morphic Pool Dock by boarding the skiff.
  • You need the Netherstones connected to Orin and Gortash before the final approach can proceed.
  • Boarding the skiff locks the party out of camp, respecs, stored equipment and normal party changes.
  • The Morphic Pool’s own explorable section is small The subsequent Astral Plane, High Hall and Netherbrain areas are connected endgame stages, not subareas of the pool itself.
  • The area contains a few fixed records, bodies and chests, but no ordinary shop district, settlement, faction hub or optional quest chain.

About this guide

Spoilers: This guide covers the end of Act Three, the Netherbrain sequence, major companion decisions and the point of no return for the rest of the game.

Overview

The Morphic Pool is an endgame location in Baldur’s Gate 3. It lies deep beneath Baldur’s Gate, within the Undercity, and is reached from the Morphic Pool Dock in the Undercity Ruins. The area is the route to the Elder Brain and begins the final sequence leading through the Astral Plane, the Upper City and the Netherbrain’s final battlefield.

The pool is not a normal Act Three dungeon. It is a short, story-driven transition area with a small amount of exploration, a few records and bodies to inspect, limited loot, hostile intellect devourers and the first confrontation with the brain that has manipulated the entire campaign. Its most important feature is progression control: entering the Morphic Pool is effectively the point of no return for Act Three. After the party sets out by skiff, it cannot return to the city, camp or ordinary party-management systems.

The location should therefore be treated as both a place and a commitment. The final battle does not begin immediately, but the game moves into a continuous endgame sequence with no ordinary opportunity to revisit Baldur’s Gate.

Location boundaries and hierarchy

The Undercity

The Morphic Pool belongs to the Undercity, the underground district beneath Baldur’s Gate. The wider Undercity contains several distinct places, including the Temple of Bhaal and the Undercity Ruins. Those areas are connected by the city’s underground routes but should not be treated as one location.

The Temple of Bhaal is where Orin’s main confrontation takes place. The Undercity Ruins are the approach area containing the Morphic Pool Dock. The Morphic Pool begins after the party boards the skiff and is carried through the underground waterway.

The Morphic Pool itself

The later Astral Plane, High Hall, Upper City and Netherbrain battle areas are part of the same final quest chain, but they are separate locations or stages. They should not be folded into a single directory for the Morphic Pool.

The Morphic Pool itself: The verified in-game area consists primarily of

  1. 01
    The arrival and landing area.
  2. 02
The cliff path leading away from the shore.
  3. 03
The bridge and cavernous route ahead.
  4. 04
The broken bridge and nearby exploration space.
  5. 05
The route towards the Elder Brain and the next endgame transition.

Access and progression

Requirements

The party reaches the Morphic Pool during Confront the Elder Brain. In ordinary progression, this means dealing with the two remaining Chosen:

Walkthrough sources describe the dock as the route used after the party has secured the necessary Netherstones.

The skiff journey

Interact with the skiff at the dock to begin the transition. A cinematic follows as the party travels through the underground water. A falling stalactite strikes or destabilises the vessel, sending the party into the pool. The group reaches the shore and is immediately addressed by the Elder Brain, which attempts to compel obedience.

This is not merely a travel animation. It marks the beginning of the final route and removes the normal freedom to leave.

The point of no return

Once the party enters the Morphic Pool sequence, it cannot return to camp or the wider city. The practical consequences include:

The game may still provide saves and some limited endgame decision points, but these do not restore the ordinary Act Three sandbox. Treat the save immediately before boarding the skiff as the final preparation save.

Geography and navigation

Landing Area

The party comes ashore at the Morphic Pool’s landing area. The first visible route is a climb up a cliff. This is the only practical way out of the initial shore section.

At the top, a wooden chest contains healing potions of higher grades. The exact contents may vary between Potion of Superior Healing and Potion of Supreme Healing, according to the location guide. A desk nearby holds an Inventory Report and a pile of gold.

From the clifftop, the route crosses a bridge into the cavernous interior. A second bridge is broken, but the gap can be crossed by jumping or using an equivalent movement option.

The cavern route

The passage beyond the bridge is an organic, hostile-looking cavern rather than a built settlement. Intellect devourers and related creatures occupy the route. Some encounters can be avoided with stealth or careful movement, although the area is designed to usher the party towards the brain rather than support prolonged exploration.

The cavern route: A practical route is

  1. 01
Climb the cliff immediately after landing.
  2. 02
    Search the chest and desk.
  3. 03
    Cross the intact bridge.
  4. 04
Jump the broken bridge if necessary.
  5. 05
Follow the intellect devourers’ route through the cavern.
  6. 06
Use stealth if you want to conserve spell slots and consumables.
  7. 07
Continue towards the Elder Brain’s position.
  8. 08
Make your final companion and allegiance decisions when the quest transitions beyond the pool.

Residents, characters and creatures

The Morphic Pool is not inhabited by a conventional civilian population. Its named and creature directory is small.

The Netherbrain

The Netherbrain is the central entity associated with the area. It addresses the party after the skiff journey and reveals its control over the larger crisis. The Morphic Pool therefore functions as the first direct stage of the final confrontation, even though the main combat encounter occurs later in the endgame sequence.

The brain is also associated with the pool’s history as a hidden location and breeding ground for intellect devourers.

Enver Gortash

Gortash may appear in connection with the Morphic Pool if he remains alive and allied with the party. The location guide specifically lists him conditionally rather than as a permanent resident. His presence depends on the player’s handling of his Act Three storyline.

Droralias Dryselis and Listelia Dryselis

These two named figures are listed as deceased in the area. Their bodies are part of the environmental storytelling surrounding the pool.

Listelia Dryselis is associated with Droralias’ Teddy Bear, which can be found on her body. This is a minor but distinctive piece of fixed loot.

Creature directory

The creatures are hostile inhabitants of the route. The area does not function as a normal random-encounter zone, and the relevant enemies are tied to the fixed endgame environment rather than a procedural dungeon system.

Factions and historical use

The Morphic Pool is associated with the Chosen Three, who concealed the Elder Brain there. Under their control, it became a hiding place and breeding ground for intellect devourers.

Before that use, the underground water route had a different purpose. The Knights of the Shield used it as a smuggling route. The Old Ledger found in the area provides evidence for this earlier history. This gives the pool a layered identity: it was first a clandestine transport route, then a secret facility for the Chosen Three and their brain-based forces.

Faction directory

The Bhaalists are relevant to the route through Orin and the Temple of Bhaal, but the Morphic Pool itself is not a Bhaalist headquarters. Similarly, the Knights of the Shield are historical users rather than an active faction encountered as a normal group in the area.

Items, records and environmental evidence

The pool has little conventional treasure, but its documents are important for understanding the site.

The available location evidence confirms the named records and the teddy bear, but it does not establish a complete item-by-item inventory for every container. Players seeking absolute loot completeness should inspect all bodies and containers rather than relying only on the prominent chest and desk.

Missions and activities

Confront the Elder Brain

This is the principal and effectively exclusive quest associated with the area. The wider objective sequence is:

A published Act Three walkthrough presents this as the final main quest chain and separates the Morphic Pool approach from later decisions involving the Emperor, Orpheus, illithid transformation and the Upper City assault.

Examination and exploration

There are no verified shops, purchasable buildings, ordinary residents, crafting stations or repeatable services in the Morphic Pool.

Confront the Elder Brain

  1. 01
    Secure Orin’s Netherstone.
  2. 02
Secure Gortash’s Netherstone or resolve the relevant alliance route.
  3. 03
Travel to the Morphic Pool Dock.
  4. 04
    Board the skiff.
  5. 05
    Reach the Elder Brain.
  6. 06
Make the next major allegiance and transformation decisions.
  7. 07
    Proceed through the final assault.
  8. 08
    Defeat or dominate the Netherbrain.

Walkthrough

Before boarding the skiff

Make a save at the dock before interacting with the skiff. Then check the following:

Route through the pool

The pool itself is best explored before moving deeper, because the game’s structure becomes increasingly linear once the Elder Brain rejects or responds to the party’s approach.

Before boarding the skiff

  1. 01
Complete any unfinished Act Three quest you care about. Entering the pool ends access to ordinary city exploration.
  2. 02
Confirm your party. After the transition, you cannot use camp to replace companions.
  3. 03
Prepare equipment. Equip weapons, armour, spellcasting tools and consumables before boarding.
  4. 04
Spend or organise resources. You will not be able to retrieve stored items from camp during the sequence.
  5. 05
Consider final buffs and elixirs. Apply any preparation that does not depend on a later camp visit.
  6. 06
Keep healing available. The chest at the landing area provides some healing, but the final sequence is significantly longer than the pool itself.
  7. 07
Bring movement options. Jump-enhancing effects, Misty Step, Fly and similar tools are useful for broken terrain and later endgame traversal.
  8. 08
Plan your final character decisions. The Emperor, Orpheus and illithid-related choices occur after the initial pool approach, but your preferred outcome may depend on earlier companion storylines.

Route through the pool

  1. 01
Board the skiff at the Morphic Pool Dock.
  2. 02
Watch the travel sequence and continue after the crash.
  3. 03
Climb the cliff from the landing shore.
  4. 04
    Loot the wooden chest.
  5. 05
Search the desk for the Inventory Report and gold.
  6. 06
    Cross the intact bridge.
  7. 07
    Jump across the broken bridge.
  8. 08
Follow the route through the cavern.
  9. 09
Avoid or defeat intellect devourers and intellect gluttons.
  10. 10
    Continue towards the Elder Brain.
  11. 11
Make the next story decision and proceed into the following endgame area.

Hazards and practical advice

Point-of-no-return hazard

The most important hazard is not an attack or environmental trap. It is progression lock-in. Entering prevents the party from returning to unfinished business in Baldur’s Gate.

Do not board the skiff merely to “see what happens” unless you have a save and are ready to begin the finale.

Intellect Devourers

These creatures are individually less threatening than most Act Three bosses, but they can still waste hit points, concentration and limited resources if encountered carelessly. Stealth is a valid approach, particularly if the party is conserving high-level spell slots for later fights. A walkthrough of the route notes that some of the hostile creatures can be bypassed by sneaking past them.

Broken terrain

The broken bridge is a straightforward movement check, but characters with poor Strength or limited mobility may need a spell, potion or teleportation effect. Keep the party grouped enough to avoid leaving a vulnerable character behind.

Resource management

The Morphic Pool is short, but it leads directly into a much more demanding sequence. Avoid spending all high-level resources on minor creatures unless the party is in danger. Area control, invisibility, mobility and defensive concentration spells become more valuable as the final assault develops.

For a first playthrough, use this order

  1. 01
Save at the Morphic Pool Dock.
  2. 02
Finish every Act Three task you still want to experience.
  3. 03
Board the skiff only when ready to finish the game.
  4. 04
    Search the landing area completely.
  5. 05
    Read every available document.
  6. 06
Collect the teddy bear from Listelia Dryselis’ body.
  7. 07
Cross the bridge and inspect the broken crossing.
  8. 08
Use stealth through the first hostile section if conserving resources.
  9. 09
Follow the main route to the Elder Brain.
  10. 10
Create another save at later endgame decision points if the game permits it.

Lore

The Morphic Pool’s importance comes from the way it combines transportation, concealment and biological control. The Knights of the Shield used the underground waterway for smuggling. Later, the Chosen Three repurposed it as a hidden location for the Elder Brain and a breeding ground for intellect devourers.

The area’s records and bodies imply that it was not simply an empty natural cavern. It had inventories, ledgers and stored materials, suggesting organised logistical use. The contrast between administrative records and the brain-creature infestation helps show how an existing secret route was transformed into part of the Absolute’s machinery.

The pool also serves a narrative purpose. The party has spent the game responding to partial information about the tadpoles, the Chosen and the Absolute. At the Morphic Pool, the hidden centre of that conspiracy is finally brought into view. The game then moves rapidly from investigation to resolution.
