About this guide
Scope: Base game, Act One. This guide uses Mountain Pass in the broad player-facing sense: the small Mountain Pass location beside Waukeen’s Rest, the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, Rosymorn Monastery, Crèche Y’llek, and the connected route towards the Shadow-Cursed Lands. These are related but distinct map areas, not one seamless region. The separate Risen Road approach and the Wilderness-side Mountain Pass entrance are described as neighbouring access points rather than being silently merged into the Trail. Spoilers: Major Act One, Lae’zel, githyanki and Rosymorn Monastery spoilers follow.
Overview
Mountain Pass is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s two major routes out of the Act One Wilderness. It is not merely a short mountain road or a single monastery map. The name is used for several connected spaces with different functions and progression rules:
The route is especially important for Lae’zel, the Find a Cure storyline, the githyanki search for the Mysterious Artefact, the history of Prince Orpheus and the legendary weapon The Blood of Lathander. It also contains some of the most valuable early-game equipment, a major companion progression point and a serious Act One transition warning.
Mountain Pass is optional in the sense that the game also provides the Underdark route into Act Two. It is not consequence-free, however. Entering the route can advance or resolve several Wilderness quests, and continuing into the Shadow-Cursed Lands begins Act Two and generally closes or fails unfinished Act One activities.
Regional boundaries and hierarchy
1. Mountain Pass, the Risen Road-side location
The strict Mountain Pass location is a small area adjacent to the Waukeen’s Rest section of the Risen Road. It can be reached from the Risen Road near the roads and river paths west of the inn. A second, awkward route exists from the Goblin Camp using high jumps, teleportation, flight or sufficient Strength.
This area is the setting for the githyanki patrol scene. It is not the same map as Rosymorn Monastery Trail, although it leads directly towards it.
2. Rosymorn Monastery Trail
The Trail is the main overland region. It connects the Mountain Pass and Goblin Camp side of Act One to the Shadow-Cursed Lands and contains the roads leading up to Rosymorn Monastery.
The Trail is a separate Act One region rather than part of the Wilderness proper. Its connections include the Mountain Pass, Goblin Camp and Ruined Battlefield in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
3. Rosymorn Monastery
Rosymorn Monastery is a ruined Lathanderian complex above the Trail. Its broken upper floors, courtyards, roofs and interior rooms form a vertical exploration area. The monastery’s lower levels connect to Crèche Y’llek.
The building is not entered through its sealed front doors in the ordinary way. The party normally uses the cable car and broken windows, then explores the ruins to locate the monastery basement.
4. Crèche Y’llek
Crèche Y’llek occupies the area directly below the monastery. It is a githyanki military and training base built into or beneath the former Lathanderian site. It includes living quarters, a classroom, a hatchery, an infirmary, captain’s quarters, a trade post, the inquisitor’s area and the Planecaster.
Although underground, it remains a child location of Rosymorn Monastery Trail for map and progression purposes.
2. Rosymorn Monastery Trail: Its named locations include
Access and routes
Route from Waukeen’s Rest and the Risen Road
The patrol’s presence is a scripted story encounter. If Lae’zel is in the party, she reacts strongly and may move towards the githyanki. If she has not yet been recruited and remains alive, she can appear in the scene and may be recruited afterwards depending on what happens.
Route from the Goblin Camp
The Goblin Camp provides another entrance towards Rosymorn Monastery Trail. Depending on the party’s choices, this may involve dealing with goblin checkpoints, guards and alarm drums, or using stealth, dialogue, disguises and movement abilities.
The exact order of encounters can vary according to the approach. The Trail itself is still the same destination once the party crosses into it.
Route to Rosymorn Monastery
The cable car wheel requires a Strength check to operate. The monastery’s damaged structure is intentionally navigated through jumping, climbing and broken windows rather than by opening the main doors.
Route to Act Two
The Trail’s western route leads towards the Shadow-Cursed Lands. On the road, the party encounters an undead group consisting of:
This battle is difficult to avoid when travelling directly between the Trail and the Shadow-Cursed Lands. After the fight, continue west and south towards the Act Two transition.

Residents, visitors and factions
Mountain Pass
Voss is searching for the Mysterious Artefact. The patrol has orders connected to the githyanki war against mind flayers and to Vlaakith’s interests. Ellyka watches the encounter from nearby and warns the party about the githyanki. She refuses an offer to join the party and can later be found dead in Crèche Y’llek if the relevant conditions occur.
Rosymorn Monastery Trail
Lady Esther is associated with the Society of Brilliance. She wants a githyanki egg for an experiment intended to alter githyanki behaviour through upbringing. Her request is tied to Steal a Githyanki Egg.
Crèche Y’llek
Crèche Y’llek’s population is divided between military authority, inquisitorial authority, medical staff, hatchery personnel, traders and children in training. The conflict between Therezzyn and W’wargaz is central to the area’s atmosphere and to the party’s access through the crèche.
Security and hostile encounters
The githyanki patrol
The Mountain Pass patrol is both a checkpoint and a story test. Voss interrogates the party about the weapon he is seeking, which is the Mysterious Artefact.
A successful conversation can avoid combat. Relevant options may involve:
Drow characters and characters using Disguise Self can receive special dialogue options. If the party fails the interrogation or openly provokes the patrol, Voss usually leaves on his dragon while the remaining githyanki attack. The hostile group includes Baretha, Chost, Zastri and For’reth.
If the patrol is defeated, Baretha can be looted for the Elaborate Slate.
Kobolds in Rosymorn Monastery
The monastery contains drunk kobolds. They are not merely decorative enemies: one of them carries the Ceremonial Mace, an item used in the Blood of Lathander puzzle. The fight can be approached directly or manipulated through environmental and dialogue options, but the important practical point is to search the kobolds afterwards.
Gremishkas
Gremishkas occupy parts of the monastery and crèche surroundings. Their presence makes spell use more dangerous because of their anti-magic-related behaviour. The crèche page also identifies named wolves, D’hak and Ur’uth, in the area.
Undead roadblock
The Death Shepherd encounter is the main hostile checkpoint on the Trail’s Shadow-Cursed Lands route. It consists of two Death Shepherds, a Ghast and four Ghouls. The surrounding corpses provide context for the attack: one dead Absolute zealot can reveal through Speak with Dead that the undead were summoned to delay pursuit while an Absolute raid continued its mission.
Landmarks and facilities
Trielta Crags
Trielta Crags is a regional waypoint and road junction on Rosymorn Monastery Trail. It is near Lady Esther’s camp and acts as the main navigation reference for both the monastery route and the road towards the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
Lady Esther’s camp
Lady Esther’s camp lies off the Trail near Trielta Crags. It is a temporary expedition camp rather than a settlement or permanent service hub. Esther can give Steal a Githyanki Egg, and her dialogue provides a useful outsider perspective on the githyanki occupation of the monastery.
Rosymorn Monastery
The monastery was dedicated to Lathander. Its remains are filled with religious records, Dawnmaster memorials and evidence of the site’s previous importance. The githyanki later occupied the lower complex and converted it into a crèche and military base.
Crèche Y’llek
The crèche contains the following functional or story-relevant areas:
The trade post is maintained by A’jak’nir Jeera. The location is a genuine merchant facility, not merely a decorative shop. Jeera sells several high-value weapons and equipment pieces, including Gloves of Dexterity, Knife of the Undermountain King, Larethian’s Wrath, Unseen Menace, Vital Conduit Boots and Witchbreaker.
Quests and activities
The Githyanki Warrior
Lae’zel’s personal storyline is the most direct reason to visit the region. The Mountain Pass patrol, Rosymorn Monastery Trail and Crèche Y’llek all advance or complicate her search for a cure.
Bring Lae’zel when possible. Her presence changes conversations, unlocks unique reactions and makes the githyanki material more coherent. The crèche also contains information about Vlaakith, the githyanki hierarchy and the history of Prince Orpheus.
Find a Cure and Find the Githyanki Crèche
The party initially believes the crèche may provide a cure for the tadpoles. The crèche’s infirmary, Zaith’isk and medical personnel make it appear to be the obvious destination, but the results are not as simple as the party hopes.
Discover the Artefact’s Secrets
The githyanki patrol and crèche are tied to the Mysterious Artefact. Voss is looking for it, while the crèche’s leadership and Vlaakith’s agents have their own interests.
Steal a Githyanki Egg
Lady Esther asks the party to obtain a githyanki egg for the Society of Brilliance. The egg is in the crèche’s hatchery, where the party must deal with Varsh Ko’kuu and the local security arrangements.
Possible approaches include dialogue, stealth, theft and violence. The quest has consequences beyond the immediate reward and should not be treated as a simple fetch quest.
Find the Blood of Lathander
This is the region’s major exploration puzzle and one of its best rewards.
The final prize is The Blood of Lathander, a legendary mace hidden in a secret chamber beneath the monastery. To obtain it safely, the party should acquire the Dawnmaster’s Crest first.
The weapons do not necessarily all need to be the named ceremonial versions. Suitable weapons of the correct type can substitute, although the ceremonial weapons are placed around the monastery for the puzzle. A successful puzzle grants Morninglord’s Radiance to the active party. The crest can also be obtained through a difficult lockpicking route after detecting the hidden compartment, but bypassing the puzzle can forfeit that beneficial effect.
If the Blood of Lathander is taken without the Dawnmaster’s Crest, a dangerous monastery trap activates and can threaten the party and the building.
Find a Cure and Find the Githyanki Crèche: The main route is
- 01Locate Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
- 02Follow Lae’zel’s githyanki markings and dialogue.
- 03Reach Rosymorn Monastery.
- 04Enter the monastery basement.
- 05Explore Crèche Y’llek.
- 06Investigate the infirmary and Zaith’isk.
- 07Continue through the crèche’s political and military areas.
Find the Blood of Lathander: The intended procedure is
- 01Enter Rosymorn Monastery through its broken windows.
- 02Search the ruined floors and defeat or bypass the kobolds.
- 03Obtain the Ceremonial Mace.
- 04Find the Ceremonial Battleaxe and Ceremonial Warhammer in the monastery.
- 05Reach the Dawnmasters’ Memorial.
- 06Place the four appropriate weapons on the correct altars according to the stained-glass image.
- 07Collect the Dawnmaster’s Crest.
- 08Use the crest in the hidden chamber when taking The Blood of Lathander.
Items and rewards directory
Crèche Y’llek equipment
The crèche has a substantial mixture of fixed loot and trader stock. Notable named equipment associated with the area includes:
Some items are found as loot, some are rewards and some are sold by A’jak’nir Jeera. Merchant inventories can also include level-dependent or refreshed stock, so not every item in a trader’s inventory should be treated as a guaranteed fixed chest placement.
Rosymorn Monastery puzzle items
The Old Maintenance Records and other writings help establish the monastery’s history and can assist with the Blood of Lathander investigation.

Recommended exploration route
For a first playthrough, the following order keeps the major content coherent:
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Resolve the Mountain Pass patrol. Try dialogue first if you want to preserve the githyanki scene without combat. If combat begins, expect a serious encounter.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Activate Trielta Crags Waypoint. This gives a reliable return point for Lady Esther, the monastery and the Act Two road.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Speak to Lady Esther. Decide whether you want to accept, delay or reject the egg quest before entering the crèche.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Explore the Trail before rushing to Act Two. Visit the statue, camp, side paths and undead roadblock.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Explore Rosymorn Monastery from the outside in. Search roofs, balconies, broken windows, graves and upper rooms before descending.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Solve the Dawnmasters’ Memorial puzzle. Obtain the Dawnmaster’s Crest before taking The Blood of Lathander.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Enter Crèche Y’llek through the monastery basement. Visit the trade post early enough to inspect Jeera’s inventory.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Bring Lae’zel through the crèche’s main story. Her reactions and choices are central to the location.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Visit the trader before major confrontations. A’jak’nir Jeera’s stock includes several unusually strong Act One items.
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Finish crèche business before crossing into the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The Act Two transition is the point at which many Act One situations are resolved or failed.
Practical checklist
Before leaving Mountain Pass, consider confirming that you have:
Progression warnings and missability
Entering the Trail advances Wilderness events
Travel to Rosymorn Monastery Trail can have consequences for several Act One quests, including matters involving:
The exact results depend on which quests remain unresolved and on the party’s earlier choices. The important practical rule is to review the journal before leaving the Wilderness.
Entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands begins Act Two
Crossing into the Shadow-Cursed Lands is the major deadline. Unfinished Act One quests commonly fail or resolve automatically. This does not mean the Mountain Pass itself becomes instantly inaccessible in every circumstance, but it does mean that the party should treat the crossing as a major progression decision rather than a normal change of map.
The Blood of Lathander trap
Do not remove the relic without first obtaining the Dawnmaster’s Crest unless you deliberately intend to handle the resulting trap. The crest is the safest way to prevent the monastery’s defensive mechanism from causing disaster.
Merchant stock
Jeera’s shop contains both notable guaranteed equipment and stock affected by trader rules. Buy important items before triggering major hostility in the crèche, and avoid assuming that every possible inventory entry appears at every character level. Merchant inventory can refresh after long rests or level-ups, while previously traded items may remain available.
Lore
Rosymorn Monastery was a Lathanderian religious and scholarly site. Its memorials, stained glass and maintenance records show a community devoted to the Morninglord, while the hidden Blood of Lathander chamber preserves a relic connected to the monastery’s deepest history.
The githyanki later seized the complex and established Crèche Y’llek beneath it. The crèche serves several purposes at once: it trains young warriors, stores supplies, operates an infirmary, houses a hatchery and provides a base from which githyanki forces can search the region. Its occupation therefore explains the visual contrast between ruined religious architecture above and an active military settlement below.
The region also advances the wider story of Vlaakith and Prince Orpheus. The crèche’s internal dispute between Kith’rak Therezzyn and Inquisitor W’wargaz reflects the tension between local military authority and the demands of Vlaakith’s inquisitorial agents.
