Key takeaways
- Rosymorn Monastery is a subarea of the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, not the entire region. The Trail also contains Lady Esther, the Blue Jay, the cable car route, the death shepherd encounter and the approach to the Mountain Pass.
- The monastery has three practical vertical sections ground level, upper level and roof, with exterior ledges that can be reached by jumping, climbing or other movement abilities.
- The surface ruin contains the ceremonial weapon puzzle Solving it awards the Dawnmaster’s Crest, which is needed to safely obtain the Blood of Lathander later.
- The front doors can become inaccessible after the githyanki scene If the party lets the githyanki take the surviving cultists inside, the monastery gates are closed and cannot simply be lockpicked from the front.
- The best normal entry is through a broken window The route from the Trail leads to the locked front entrance, but the broken windows near the monastery allow the party to enter without forcing the main doors.
- Entering the Mountain Pass advances Act One world events Complete time-sensitive Wilderness, grove, goblin and refugee business first if you want to preserve those quests and their associated vendors or rewards.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act One story developments, the Find the Blood of Lathander quest, the monastery’s hidden weapon, the githyanki crèche connection and consequences of advancing through the Mountain Pass.
Overview
Rosymorn Monastery is a ruined Lathanderite monastery in Act One of Baldur’s Gate 3. It occupies the eastern end of the Rosymorn Monastery Trail, a high mountain region reached through the Mountain Pass. The monastery itself is not the whole trail and should not be confused with Crèche Y’llek, the githyanki facility beneath it. In practical terms, the location is a compact but vertically arranged ruin: a ground level, an upper level, a roof and several exterior ledges, with the crèche reached through a separate entrance below.
The monastery is important for three reasons. It is the setting for the ceremonial weapon puzzle connected to the legendary Blood of Lathander, it contains a sizeable encounter with kobolds and giant eagles, and it provides the surface entrance to the githyanki crèche that drives Lae’zel’s personal storyline and several major Act One quests.
The location is best explored before entering the crèche proper. The monastery’s surface ruins contain useful equipment, quest clues and a waypoint, while the crèche is a separate, story-heavy subarea with its own characters, rooms, encounters and progression.
What belongs to Rosymorn Monastery?
For this guide, Rosymorn Monastery means the ruined Lathanderite building and its immediately associated monastery grounds. The game treats it as a location within the larger Rosymorn Monastery Trail. The territory changes near the monastery waypoint, although the visible building begins farther inside the approach.
The following are neighbouring or connected areas, but should not be merged with the monastery itself:
Rosymorn Monastery Trail
The Trail is the wider mountain region surrounding the monastery. It contains the cable car, the mountain road, the Blue Jay, Lady Esther, the vista point and several other encounters. It also contains the route towards the Mountain Pass and the area’s regional waypoint structure.
Crèche Y’llek
Crèche Y’llek is a separate githyanki subarea beneath the monastery. It is accessed through the monastery but has its own internal map, residents, quests, combat encounters and story progression. It should not be treated as an ordinary room of the ruined building.
Mountain Pass
The Mountain Pass is the broader transition into the next Act One region. Reaching it or travelling through it can resolve or alter several earlier quests, so the region should be treated as a progression boundary rather than simply another nearby road.
Canonical subareas and connected places
Directly connected but separate
---
Rosymorn Monastery is built into a steep mountain setting. The building is not designed as a conventional flat dungeon. Much of its exploration depends on looking beyond the obvious doors and corridors. Broken walls, ledges, windows, vines and ruined platforms create alternate routes between the three main elevations.
The monastery is consequently easier to explore with a party member who can jump reliably, use Misty Step, fly, or otherwise cross gaps. These are movement conveniences rather than mandatory class requirements, but they make the ruin much less awkward to navigate.
Rosymorn Monastery surface ruin
Directly connected but separate
Directly connected but separate: The practical division is
- 01Ground level: the easiest level to reach from the broken windows, occupied partly by kobolds and ruined interior spaces.
- 02Upper level: the location of the Dawnmasters’ memorial room and the stained-glass puzzle.
- 03Roof: the eagle’s nest and several pieces of loot, including the ceremonial warhammer.
- 04Exterior ledges: routes around the building containing chests, potions and access points that are easy to miss.
Surface waypoint
The monastery has a waypoint labelled Rosymorn Monastery. Reaching it gives the party a useful fast-travel point before entering the crèche or returning to the Trail.
---
Reaching the monastery from the Trail
The monastery is approached from the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. One route uses the cable car near the Trail’s western side. The Cable Car Wheel requires a Strength check to operate, after which the party can ride towards the monastery. The exact method is not compulsory, since the Trail also supports a longer climbing and walking route.
Recommended approach
- 01Explore the Trail before riding the cable car.
- 02Speak with the Blue Jay and investigate the nearby bird-related quest if desired.
- 03Visit Lady Esther before entering the monastery if you want to inspect her available trade goods or begin her quest.
- 04Use the cable car or the climbing route to reach the monastery.
- 05Activate the Rosymorn Monastery waypoint.
- 06Enter through the broken windows rather than relying on the front doors.
The front-door githyanki scene
Approaching the main doors can trigger a scene in which Raider Add’ath and Warrior Ith’dul escort Halfling cultists towards the crèche. Corliss Undertump attempts to flee and is shot if the scene proceeds normally. The other named cultists are Mahrin and Burrock.
If the party allows the githyanki group to enter, the gates are closed behind them. The front doors cannot then be lockpicked from the outside. The party must use another route, including the broken windows or an interior lever reached from the other side.
Attacking the group before they enter leaves the gates open, although this creates a different encounter and can alter the fate of the characters involved.
The broken-window route
The broken windows are just west of the front doors. They provide the normal practical entrance into the ruin. Once inside, the party encounters drunk kobolds. One of them carries the Ceremonial Mace, making this route directly relevant to the Blood of Lathander puzzle.
---
Named characters associated with the monastery
These characters are associated with the monastery surface area or its entrance scene:
Corliss Undertump can become available for Speak with Dead if killed during the entrance scene. Her body is found near the front doors.
The githyanki characters are visitors or occupiers connected to the crèche, rather than ordinary residents of the abandoned Lathanderite monastery. The Halfling cultists are likewise involved in the entrance scene and should not be treated as a permanent local population.
Ordinary creatures
The monastery surface contains the following named creature categories:
The kobolds occupy sections of the ruined building and are encountered early through the broken-window route. The giant eagles occupy the roof and eagle’s nest.
The eagle’s nest
The roof contains an Ancient Giant Eagle and, depending on the party’s choices, additional Giant Eagles. If the party approaches while using Speak with Animals, the Ancient Giant Eagle can be addressed directly. It may be placated, but approaching the nest afterwards can still lead to combat.
If combat begins, the Ancient Giant Eagle can call additional eagles into the fight. This makes the roof encounter more dangerous than its isolated position may suggest.
The nest is also the location of the Ceremonial Warhammer, one of the weapons required for the Dawnmasters’ memorial puzzle. The eagle encounter is therefore tied to both exploration and the Find the Blood of Lathander quest.
---
Find the Blood of Lathander
The monastery surface section is the opening investigation site for Find the Blood of Lathander. The objective is not merely to search the ruin for a weapon. The party must recover the Dawnmaster’s Crest, a relic that later allows the legendary mace to be taken safely.
The quest can begin when the party finds the ceremonial weapons or investigates the monastery’s Lathanderite history. One possible starting point is the Ceremonial Mace, carried by a kobold inside the ruined building.
The four ceremonial weapons
The Ceremonial Longsword is already placed on one of the altars. The other three weapons must be recovered around the monastery and placed on the correct altars according to the stained-glass image.
The game checks weapon type rather than merely accepting any weapon with a similar appearance. A light hammer, for example, is not a substitute for a warhammer. The correct ceremonial weapon must be placed or thrown onto the relevant altar.
Puzzle procedure
The room contains a stained-glass image depicting four Dawnmasters, each holding their favoured weapon. Three parts of the image are intact while one section is broken, but the weapon identities and altar arrangement are still sufficient to solve the puzzle.
The hidden compartment may also be exposed through a Perception check and opened with a very difficult Sleight of Hand check. However, obtaining the crest without completing the intended puzzle can prevent the party from receiving the puzzle’s beneficial effect. Solving the puzzle is therefore preferable even if the party can technically acquire the crest by another method.
Reward and effect
The principal reward is the Dawnmaster’s Crest. Completing the puzzle also grants Morninglord’s Radiance to the party. The ceremonial weapons can be removed afterwards and used, sold or retained.
The four ceremonial weapons: The puzzle uses four weapon types
| Dawnmaster | Required weapon |
|---|---|
| Dawnmaster Welkinglory | Ceremonial Longsword |
| Dawnmaster Seed | Ceremonial Warhammer |
| Dawnmaster Stockhold | Ceremonial Mace |
| Dawnmaster Vaseid | Ceremonial Battleaxe |
Puzzle procedure
- 01Find the Ceremonial Mace among the kobolds.
- 02Reach the roof and recover the Ceremonial Warhammer from the eagle’s nest.
- 03Find the Ceremonial Battleaxe in the monastery’s upper sections.
- 04Enter the Dawnmasters’ memorial room.
- 05Inspect the stained-glass image to identify which weapon belongs to each Dawnmaster.
- 06Place the weapons on the matching altars.
- 07Take the Dawnmaster’s Crest from the revealed compartment.
Reclaim the Blue Jay’s Nest
This activity begins on the wider Rosymorn Monastery Trail with the Blue Jay, not inside the monastery proper. The monastery’s roof is nevertheless part of the objective because the giant eagles occupy the nest the Blue Jay wants reclaimed.
The activity is best treated as a Trail quest with a monastery conclusion. The Blue Jay is not a resident of the monastery, and the quest should not be used as evidence that the Trail and monastery are a single location.
The Githyanki Warrior
Rosymorn Monastery is the surface approach to the githyanki crèche, making it central to Lae’zel’s personal quest and the broader search for a cure. The monastery itself contains the approach and some associated scenes, but the major dialogue, investigation and combat developments occur in Crèche Y’llek.
---
The cleanest progression is
- 01Explore the monastery surface.
- 02Solve the Dawnmasters’ puzzle.
- 03Activate the waypoint.
- 04Enter Crèche Y’llek.
- 05Complete the crèche-related conversations and objectives.
- 06Return to the Trail or continue towards the next Act One region.
Monastery front gate
The front gate is both a visual landmark and a potential progression trap. The githyanki entrance scene occurs here, and allowing it to finish can close the doors from the outside. It is also where the party can find Corliss Undertump after the scene.
Lathander statue and plaque
A statue near the entrance provides a Religion check that can identify the monastery as consecrated to Lathander. This is a useful atmospheric clue and helps frame the ruin as a religious and scholarly site rather than merely a ruined military structure.
Eagle’s nest
The nest is located on the roof and combines an encounter, a quest objective and fixed loot. The Ceremonial Warhammer lies at the bottom of the nest. Nearby exterior routes lead to additional chests and potions.
Dawnmasters’ memorial room
This upper-level chamber contains the stained-glass puzzle. It is the most important surface room in the monastery because it produces the Dawnmaster’s Crest and establishes the weapon identities used later in the Blood of Lathander quest.
Stained-glass floor
The stained-glass image is the puzzle’s visual key. Read it carefully before placing weapons. If the wrong weapon is used, it can bounce back towards a party member and potentially knock them prone.
---
Fixed notable items
The Holy Lance Helm is found in a chest on the eastern exterior side of the monastery. Additional healing potions can be found in a wooden trunk and a pouch near the roof-side mural area.
Fixed notable items
Hidden buried chests
The monastery and its immediate grounds contain buried wooden chests at several locations. Their contents can vary by chest and may require Survival checks to reveal them.
The first is associated with the Blue Jay activity and can be revealed through a sufficiently high Survival check or at the conclusion of the quest. The latter two require separate Survival checks.
Surface loot directory
This list concerns the monastery surface and immediate grounds. It does not include the separate inventory of Crèche Y’llek or Lady Esther’s stock on the Trail.

Surface loot directory
Locked monastery gates
The main gates can become inaccessible after the githyanki escort enters the building. Avoid treating the front entrance as the only route. Enter through the broken windows or arrange to reach the interior side of the gate.
Kobold ambushes and explosive hazards
The kobolds inside the monastery are not simply harmless drunken occupants. Kobold Inventors can use dangerous equipment and create awkward fights in confined rooms. Consider separating party members before combat and inspect explosive objects before detonating them.
Giant eagle reinforcements
The Ancient Giant Eagle may call additional Giant Eagles if a fight begins. Combat on the roof is particularly risky because of the exposed terrain and the possibility of being pushed or knocked from elevated platforms.
The Blood of Lathander failsafe
The Dawnmaster’s Crest is not decorative. It is the safety device for the legendary weapon later in the quest. Do not assume that reaching the weapon is enough. The party should solve the ceremonial weapon puzzle and retain the crest before attempting to claim the mace.
Movement checks and missed ledges
The monastery’s vertical design makes it easy to finish the obvious route while overlooking exterior ledges. Search above and below every major room. A failed or overlooked jump can leave the party convinced that a door or reward is inaccessible when a nearby ledge provides the intended route.

Route B: minimum safe preparation
If the party wants to reach the crèche quickly:
This route skips some Trail exploration but preserves the most important monastery reward.
---
Route B: minimum safe preparation: steps
- 01Enter through the broken window.
- 02Take the Ceremonial Mace.
- 03Obtain the Ceremonial Warhammer from the roof.
- 04Find the battleaxe.
- 05Solve the Dawnmasters’ puzzle.
- 06Take the Dawnmaster’s Crest.
- 07Activate the waypoint.
- 08Enter Crèche Y’llek.
Before entering the Mountain Pass
Travelling to the Rosymorn Monastery Trail advances Act One’s regional progression. It can resolve or alter several quests connected with the Druid Grove, goblin conflict, tiefling refugees, Sazza, Halsin, the Grand Duke and other early-game objectives. The safest practice is to finish any urgent Grove and goblin-related work before travelling to the Mountain Pass.
The key distinction is that this is not necessarily caused by opening one monastery door. The significant change is entering the Mountain Pass region and allowing the game’s progression state to advance.
After entering the monastery
The monastery’s internal content is more self-contained. The main surface risks are:
Fixed versus variable content
Check-dependent

Before leaving the monastery surface, confirm that you have:
---
Is Rosymorn Monastery the same as the Rosymorn Monastery Trail?
No. The monastery is a location within the Trail. The Trail is the wider mountain region and contains Lady Esther, the Blue Jay, the cable car, the vista point and other encounters.
Is Crèche Y’llek part of the monastery?
It is directly connected to the monastery, but it is a separate subarea with its own content. The monastery is the ruined surface building; Crèche Y’llek is the githyanki facility below it.
Can I enter if the front doors are locked?
Yes. Use the broken windows near the front entrance. The game provides alternate routes specifically because the githyanki can seal the main gate.
Do I need the ceremonial weapons to get the Dawnmaster’s Crest?
Not absolutely. The hidden compartment can be revealed and opened through checks, but solving the intended puzzle is the safer and more rewarding approach because it also grants Morninglord’s Radiance.
Should I enter the Mountain Pass immediately?
Usually no. Finish time-sensitive Grove, goblin and refugee content first. Entering the Mountain Pass can advance Act One and change the state of earlier quests.
What is the most important reward here?
The Dawnmaster’s Crest is the most important surface reward because it supports the later acquisition of the Blood of Lathander. The Holy Lance Helm and ceremonial weapons are also fixed, useful finds.

This guide treats the surface monastery and its immediate grounds as the primary scope. It deliberately separates:
The available location source verifies the monastery’s main characters, creatures, quests, waypoint, major loot and three buried chest positions. It does not provide a fully itemised catalogue of every ordinary container, every decorative architectural label or every incidental background object. Those entries are therefore not claimed here as complete. The named directories above are a verified working directory for the researched monastery scope, not an unsupported claim that every unnamed container or environmental prop has been catalogued.
