About this guide

Spoilers: This guide covers Act Two locations, Gerringothe Thorm’s encounter, hidden loot, and progression-sensitive exploration in Baldur’s Gate 3. It does not cover every location in Reithwin Town.

Overview

Reithwin Tollhouse is a ruined customs building on the south-eastern edge of Reithwin Town in Act Two. It stands beside the Ruined Battlefield, overlooking the river and the road into the town. Although the building appears small from outside, the location includes the main tollhouse, its roof, an exterior basement, a hidden office, and a deeper cellar. Its central encounter is with Gerringothe Thorm, a cursed toll collector who continues demanding payment long after Reithwin’s population has vanished.

The tollhouse is both a combat location and a compact exploration dungeon. It contains one of the Act’s distinctive boss encounters, several strong or useful items, background-specific Inspirations, environmental storytelling about Reithwin’s collapse, and a collection of hidden rooms that are easy to miss if the party only follows the main staircase.

The building is part of Reithwin Town, but it should not be confused with the nearby Ruined Battlefield, the Mason’s Guild, the Waning Moon, Moonrise Towers, or the broader Reithwin Town region. Those are separate locations with their own residents, encounters and loot.

What belongs to Reithwin Tollhouse?

The location does not include the whole of Reithwin Town. In particular, the following are neighbouring or related areas rather than subareas of the tollhouse:

Reithwin Town’s location hierarchy places the Tollhouse in the town’s south-eastern corner, adjacent to the Ruined Battlefield. The town itself contains several separate major buildings and quest spaces, so loot or characters found elsewhere in Reithwin should not be attributed to the tollhouse.

Main named areas within scope

Some of these names describe functional rooms or identifiable areas rather than separate map locations.

---

The tollhouse occupies the southern side of the east-to-west road through Reithwin Town. The main stone bridge from the Ruined Battlefield leads towards the building and the town’s road network. A smaller wooden bridge connects the Ruined Battlefield’s lower quay to the tollhouse pier. The building is visibly distorted by shadow-cursed vines, which break through parts of its upper structure and provide several climbing routes.

Main named areas within scope

Main route from the Ruined Battlefield

The Reithwin Town waypoint is nearby, at approximately X: -78, Y: -46. The exact approach may vary slightly depending on which side of the Ruined Battlefield the party uses.

Main route from the Ruined Battlefield: steps

  1. 01
Enter Reithwin Town from the main stone bridge.
  2. 02
Follow the road towards the tollhouse entrance.
  3. 03
Enter through the double doors on the ground floor.
  4. 04
Use the damaged staircase to reach the upper floor.
  5. 05
    Approach Gerringothe when ready.

Roof access

The roof can be reached in several ways:

The roof is not merely decorative. It provides access to the Seized Inventory room, contains a skeleton with important keys and tools, and allows the party to approach the upper floor from another direction.

Basement access

The basement is entered through double doors on the southern outside wall. It is not connected normally to the ground and upper floors. The door can be opened with the Tollhouse Basement Key, found on the roof skeleton, or opened with a lockpicking check.

---

Ground floor

The ground floor is mostly a ruined storage and customs area filled with barrels, boxes and crates. Most containers are empty, but several details reward careful searching.

Near the approach to the building, the party can find Harpers’ prayers scratched into a wall. This is an environmental clue that connects the tollhouse to the wider resistance activity in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

The bridge and pier contain several containers. A key found in a wooden crate on the stone bridge opens the smaller chest on the pier. A separate heavy chest contains gold and a Gold Ingot. Outside the building, a pair of skeletons carry gold and a random potion, while another heavy chest is hidden behind a nearby cart.

The backyard contains a heap of pets’ collars. This object is linked thematically to a poster on a message board near the Waning Moon. The party’s comments vary depending on which half of the interaction has been discovered first. This is a small piece of environmental storytelling rather than a conventional quest reward.

Ground-floor named entries

The three regional crates are mainly flavour objects, although the Thay crate contains an Agate.

Upper floor

The upper floor is the tollhouse’s main gameplay space. Gerringothe Thorm patrols the southern wing, accompanied by six floating Visages. Her movement leaves small piles of gold on the floor, which can be collected after the encounter.

Several rooms hold the tollhouse’s best fixed loot. The upper floor also contains the office and clerk keys required to access some locked rooms. The party can enter from below through the damaged stairs, from the roof through the central roots, or from an upper-floor doorway reached from outside.

Roof

The roof is covered by damaged boards, roots and shadow-cursed growth. A skeleton on the roof carries:

The roof also gives access to the sealed Seized Inventory room. A passive Perception check can reveal breakable boards, allowing the party to drop into the room from above.

Roof

Basement and secret office

The basement begins as a relatively plain storage area. Its main container is a heavy chest on a cart near the entrance. The more interesting discovery is a hidden mechanical door concealed among three large bookcases.

Two Perception checks can reveal the mechanism. A button opens the hidden section and leads to Gerringothe’s secret office. The office contains a gilded chest, miscellaneous valuables and a Soul Coin on the desk.

A breach in the floor leads down into a deeper cellar. This lower section contains a rustic chest, but it is more notable for its hidden, half-forgotten atmosphere than for a major unique reward.

---

Named resident

Gerringothe is the last acting toll collector of Reithwin. The Shadow Curse has transformed her into a deformed, gold-obsessed creature who continues to demand payment from anyone entering her domain. She is the only named resident permanently associated with the tollhouse.

Hostile named creatures

The six Visages float around the upper floor before combat. They represent different aspects of Gerringothe’s character and serve as both battlefield threats and protection for the boss. The current location directory lists all six separately.

There are no ordinary living tollhouse workers, merchants or civilian residents present when the party arrives. The location is a ruined, cursed remnant rather than an active customs post.

---

Dialogue resolution

Approaching Gerringothe automatically starts a dialogue. The party can refuse to pay and fight, use dialogue options to convince her to retire, or offer gold.

The peaceful dialogue route does not mean the party simply walks away. Convincing Gerringothe to retire effectively causes her to destroy herself, and the party can then explore the building and recover the remaining loot.

A separate payment route is available if the party gives her all the gold it is carrying and the total exceeds 5,000 gold pieces. In that case, Gerringothe grants the Signed Trade Visa, which casts the one-use spell Flesh to Gold. The dialogue resolution provides experience comparable to defeating Gerringothe and her Visages, but may prevent some combat-related Inspirations from being earned.

Combat resolution

If combat begins, Gerringothe uses Jealous Avarice, an attack whose power is affected by how much gold the target currently carries. Before speaking to her, send excess gold to camp storage if you think a battle is likely. This is particularly important for characters who carry the party’s accumulated gold.

The Visages are distributed around the upper floor. Managing them is the key to making the fight safer. Depending on the chosen tactic, the party can focus on the boss, remove the Visages first, use the building’s layout for cover, or combine dialogue and combat preparation.

If Gerringothe is defeated, she can be looted for Twist of Fortune, an Unsigned Trade Visa, and a key to her office. Additional gold appears in several piles around the area.

Practical preparation

---

The following are the main fixed or named rewards associated with the tollhouse.

The location also contains gold, random potions, alchemical ingredients, valuables and ordinary containers. These should not be confused with the fixed named rewards above.

Practical preparation

  1. 01
    Send surplus gold to camp.
  2. 02
Keep the party spread out to reduce the risk of losing multiple characters to area attacks.
  3. 03
Consider exploring the upper floor before starting dialogue so you know the room layout.
  4. 04
Identify the Visages and possible cover.
  5. 05
Do not push Gerringothe or her loot into the building’s broken gaps if you want to guarantee access to her body and rewards. A current item guide specifically warns that her weapon and gold can disappear into the tollhouse chasms.

Important keys

The bridge key is found in a crate on the stone bridge. The ordinary tollhouse key is in a barrel on the upper floor and opens the larger chest on the pier. Clerk keys are found in desks on the upper floor and open the clerk room. The basement key is on the roof skeleton.

---

Fireheart and Greataxe +1

The Seized Inventory room is difficult to enter from the ground level because its doorway is tangled with thick vines. The easier route is:

A passive Perception check can reveal the boards from the roof. The chest requires a lockpicking check unless opened by another suitable method.

Fireheart and Greataxe +1: steps

  1. 01
    Climb to the roof.
  2. 02
Look for the breakable boards above the room.
  3. 03
    Destroy the boards.
  4. 04
    Drop into the room.
  5. 05
Loot the Greataxe +1 and the chest containing Fireheart.

Gloves of Battlemage’s Power

The locked clerk room is on the upper floor. Locate a Tollhouse Clerk’s Key in the wooden desks in the northern part of the level, or use a suitable lockpicking attempt. The opulent chest inside requires a further lockpicking check.

Ironvine Shield

The Ironvine Shield is in a heavy chest inside the Tollhouse Master’s Office. You need the office key or another method of entry. The office also connects to a lower room through breakable floorboards.

Soul Coin

The Soul Coin is in Gerringothe’s secret office:

This is one of the easiest rewards to overlook because the basement entrance is separate from the main building route.

Soul Coin: steps

  1. 01
    Enter the basement from outside.
  2. 02
    Search the three large bookcases.
  3. 03
Pass the Perception checks that reveal the hidden mechanism.
  4. 04
Press the button to open the secret wall.
  5. 05
Loot the Soul Coin from the desk.

The upper-floor safe

One safe contains 514 gold and requires a DC 16 Strength check to open. A second safe is protected by a very high lockpicking difficulty, but a nearby wall note provides the combination if the party notices it with a passive Perception check. The combination route is considerably more practical than attempting the lock directly.

Reithwin Tollhouse has several background-specific Inspiration opportunities.

The tollhouse encounter also contributes to broader background Inspiration chains involving the fate of prominent members of the Thorm family and the history of Reithwin. Those wider triggers require discoveries beyond this building, including information about other Thorm family members and Morfred, the Mason’s Guild leader.

---

The tollhouse reflects Reithwin’s former importance as a prosperous town on the Risen Road near the River Chionthar. Reithwin once benefited from traffic moving through the region, collecting tariffs from travellers and river traffic. The ruined tollhouse therefore represents a corrupted version of a once-functional civic institution.

Gerringothe’s continued obsession with toll collection turns that history into grotesque satire. She is not guarding an active border or serving a functioning government. She is repeating the habits of her former office after the town and its population have been destroyed.

The tollhouse’s condition is also part of Reithwin’s broader visual language. The town’s buildings are physically broken by vines and shadow, while the institutions inside them continue in distorted forms: the tollhouse still demands taxes, the Waning Moon still serves drinks, and the House of Healing still performs its work under Malus Thorm.

---

Current location and item guides mark several tollhouse rewards as unavailable after the Act Two point of no return at the Shadowfell. The specifically listed progression-sensitive rewards include Fireheart, Ironvine Shield, Gloves of Battlemage’s Power and the Soul Coin. Explore the tollhouse before committing to that stage of the Act.

The safest approach is to clear the tollhouse while Reithwin Town remains explorable, before the party completes the major Shadowfell transition. This is especially important if you want:

The exact availability of surrounding Reithwin Town content depends on wider Act Two progression, so do not treat the tollhouse as an isolated checklist if you are trying to complete the entire town.

Basement

---

Is Reithwin Tollhouse part of Reithwin Town?

Yes. It is a distinct location within Reithwin Town, positioned at the town’s south-eastern edge. It is not the same area as the Ruined Battlefield, although the two are directly connected by bridges.

Is there a merchant in the tollhouse?

No. The building has no functioning merchant or ordinary shop service. Gerringothe is a toll collector and boss encounter, not a conventional vendor.

Can Gerringothe be defeated without combat?

Yes. Dialogue can convince her to retire, effectively causing her death without a normal fight. A separate payment outcome is possible if the party gives her more than 5,000 gold and receives the Signed Trade Visa.

Should I carry gold when speaking to Gerringothe?

Not if you expect combat. Store excess gold in camp first because her Jealous Avarice attack scales with the target’s carried gold.

How do I enter the basement?

Use the exterior southern doors. The Tollhouse Basement Key is on the roof skeleton, although the door can also be lockpicked.

Is the basement connected to the main building?

Not normally. It has a separate exterior entrance. The hidden office and deeper cellar are reached from inside the basement itself.

What is the best item in the tollhouse?

That depends on the party, but the most notable fixed rewards are generally Twist of Fortune, Fireheart, Ironvine Shield, Gloves of Battlemage’s Power, Club +1 and the Soul Coin. The Signed Trade Visa is also unusual because it provides the one-use Flesh to Gold spell.
