Selûnite Outpost

The Selûnite Outpost is an abandoned fortified settlement in the south-eastern Underdark of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The outpost is one of the Underdark’s four main entry points, reached by descending from the Defiled Temple beneath the Goblin Camp.
  • Its moonstone-powered artillery is still active The safest solution is normally to destroy the Moonstone, although doing so removes the gate’s defensive weapon.
  • The western ruins contain a scripted Spectator encounter and several petrified drow, including Dhourn, whose survival can advance The Adamantine Forge.
  • Important fixed loot includes Luminous Armour, Helmet of Smiting, The Blast Pendant, Memory Shard, Icy Helve and The Spectator Eyes.
  • The outpost itself has no resident trader, inn, quest-giver or ordinary civilian population. Its named “characters” are petrified drow and hostile or encounter-based creatures.
  • Nearby, but technically outside the fortress, the party can claim Phalar Aluve and discover a hidden stash containing Drow Studded Leather Armour.

About this guide

Base game guide. Act One. Major spoilers for the Underdark, the Spectator encounter, Find the Nightsong and The Adamantine Forge.

Overview

The Selûnite Outpost is an abandoned fortified settlement in the south-eastern Underdark of Baldur’s Gate 3. It was established by followers of Selûne as an attempt to maintain a foothold below the surface, but the expedition failed. The surviving ruins still contain working magical defences, valuable equipment and evidence of the settlers’ increasingly desperate struggle against the Underdark’s inhabitants.

The outpost is small when compared with places such as Ebonlake Grotto or Grymforge, but its immediate surroundings are more extensive than the fortress itself. For this guide, Selûnite Outpost means the named outpost and the directly connected south-eastern area that includes:

The Storehouse, Arcane Tower, Ebonlake Grotto, Defiled Temple and the wider Minotaur Hills are neighbouring locations, not parts of the outpost. They are included only where they affect access, navigation or encounters.

Geography and boundaries

The Selûnite Outpost occupies a fortified position in the south-eastern Underdark. Its most recognisable feature is a stone gatehouse with a raised portcullis, ramparts and two defensive statues. Behind and around it are ruined walls, old barricades, abandoned weapons and the remains of long-dead defenders.

The named location is best understood as a fortress plus its immediately connected ruins, rather than as the whole south-eastern Underdark quadrant. The Storehouse lies to the north-east and is a separate location. The Defiled Temple is the surface-side route below the Goblin Camp. The Arcane Tower lies to the west, while the wider Underdark spreads towards Ebonlake Grotto, Dread Hollow and Grymforge.

Petrified Battlefield

The area west of the fortress is not given a separate proper location name in the game, but it is commonly treated as a subarea of the outpost. It contains:

The battlefield is reached through or around the ruined western part of the outpost. Entering openly can trigger the Spectator encounter.

Eilistraee’s sword site

On a high cliff nearby is an old ritual site dedicated to Eilistraee, the drow goddess associated with moonlight, freedom and redemption. The sword Phalar Aluve is embedded in stone there. This site is geographically close enough to be useful during an outpost sweep, but it is not part of the fortified building itself.

Hidden drow stash

Behind layers of spider webs on a nearby cliff is an old stash associated with Lolth-sworn drow. It contains Drow Studded Leather Armour and the book On Educating the Faithful. The stash is part of the same local exploration circuit, although it is outside the outpost walls.

Access and routes

Entering from the Defiled Temple

The most direct route begins in the Goblin Camp.

This is one of the recognised overland entrances to the Underdark. Other entrances lead to different parts of the region, including the Storehouse, Minotaur Hills and the area near the Myconid Colony.

The route is effectively one-way at first. The outpost cannot normally be used to enter the Defiled Temple from the Underdark unless the relevant route has already been opened from the other side. It therefore cannot be used as a surprise infiltration route into the Goblin Camp.

Opening the outpost gate

The main exit is protected by the moonstone artillery. The gate’s magical system uses a large Moonstone held by a statue of Selûne. Energy is channelled to two smaller statues, which fire radiant blasts at creatures approaching or leaving the gate.

The artillery fires in the area between the portcullis and the nearest large rocks on the stone bridge. Its attack deals radiant damage in an area and allows a Dexterity saving throw to reduce the damage. The documented attack is 2d6 radiant damage, with a DC 12 Dexterity save for half damage.

Destroying the Moonstone grants the Acolyte inspiration event Shatter the Moon. It also disables the artillery, making the gate safer for future travel.

Navigation advice

Do not assume the fortress itself is the whole encounter zone. Several important rewards are outside the main walls.

---

Entering from the Defiled Temple

  1. 01
Enter the Defiled Temple beneath the Shattered Sanctum.
  2. 02
Solve or bypass the moon-phase door puzzle.
  3. 03
Descend the ladder into the Underdark.
  4. 04
Arrive inside or immediately beside the Selûnite Outpost.

Navigation advice: The safest general route is

  1. 01
Loot the interior before activating or leaving through the gate.
  2. 02
Find the hidden room and take Luminous Armour.
  3. 03
Search the locked chest for Helmet of Smiting.
  4. 04
Deal with the moonstone before committing the party to the bridge.
  5. 05
    Exit and establish the waypoint.
  6. 06
Sweep west towards the petrified drow.
  7. 07
Visit the Phalar Aluve cliff and the drow stash before leaving the area.

The moonstone defence system

The outpost’s most memorable feature is its still-functioning Selûnite defence mechanism. The abandoned settlement is visibly decayed, but the weapon system remains active centuries or decades after its guardians disappeared.

The system is both a trap and a potential environmental weapon. A Minotaur from the nearby area can be drawn towards the entrance and struck by the radiant blasts. This can weaken the creature before a conventional fight, although relying on the artillery is not always safe if party members are standing in its targeting zone.

The book In Search of the Nightsong, located near the Selûne statue, can progress Find the Nightsong. This is an investigation clue rather than a full quest resolution.

Petrified Battlefield and the Spectator

The western ruins contain a group of drow who have been turned to stone. The source of the petrification is a Spectator, which reveals itself as the party approaches the battlefield.

The fight can begin when the party enters the area without stealth. The Spectator may use its Unpetrification Ray on the drow, restoring some of them during the battle. Restored drow can become confused or hostile depending on the circumstances and may be killed during the encounter.

Basilisk Oil

Basilisk Oil can restore petrified drow. Using it can also trigger the encounter sequence. This gives the party more control over when the battlefield becomes active, but it does not remove the underlying danger.

Dhourn and the Adamantine Forge

Dhourn is the most important of the petrified drow. If he survives, speaking with him can begin or advance The Adamantine Forge. If he dies, his corpse can still provide relevant equipment and progress.

The Memory Shard is particularly relevant to the search for the Adamantine Forge. Depending on how the conversation develops, Dhourn may also provide information connected with the drow expedition and the forge.

A drow player character, or a character disguised as a drow, receives additional dialogue options. The exchange can vary further for a female drow character. A particular humiliating outcome can grant the Noble inspiration event Know Your Place, while the circumstances of the encounter may determine whether Dhourn survives.

Named petrified drow directory

The following named drow are associated with the battlefield:

They are not a resident community or a functioning faction within the outpost. They are remnants of an expedition caught by the Spectator’s petrification.

Loot and collectibles

The outpost is one of the better early Underdark locations for fixed equipment. It has no shop inventory, but several pieces of equipment are hidden behind locks, traps or encounter outcomes.

Main outpost loot

The hidden section containing Luminous Armour can be found with a DC 15 Perception check. If the party fails to detect the movable wall, the room can still be reached through the adjacent broken section by jumping through the breach. The chest is locked and trapped, so bring a character capable of handling both problems.

Battlefield and nearby encounter loot

The status of Dhourn affects how these items are obtained. Some may be looted from him if he dies, while a surviving Dhourn can produce additional dialogue before the party searches him.

Phalar Aluve and the Eilistraee ritual

The Phalar Aluve site is on a high cliff close to the outpost. The sword is set into a stone cradle surrounded by the remains of a ritual dedicated to Eilistraee.

The documented ritual path can grant the Acolyte inspiration event Last Rites of the Dark Dancer. A successful Religion check alone is not enough if the sword is then removed by a method that bypasses the blood rite. Paladins receive a different check profile, while a Cleric of Eilistraee can recognise the ritual automatically.

Practical advice

Phalar Aluve is particularly useful for characters who benefit from its support abilities, but the sword is not locked behind a single mandatory class choice. If you want the associated inspiration, follow the ritual rather than simply relying on brute force.

---

There are several ways to claim it

  1. 01
Pass the relevant Religion check to recognise the ritual.
  2. 02
Shed blood as part of the rite.
  3. 03
Use a Strength-based method to pull the sword free.
  4. 04
Bypass the formal checks by placing blood on the stone.

The hidden Lolth-sworn drow stash

A cliffside stash is concealed behind several layers of spider webs. It is easy to overlook if the party focuses only on the fortress and the Spectator.

Reading the book can grant the Sage inspiration event Secrets of the Matron. The stash is useful both as a small equipment cache and as a contrast to the nearby Eilistraeean sword ritual. One site represents Lolth-sworn discipline and indoctrination; the other preserves a more hopeful drow religious tradition.

Residents, factions and ordinary NPCs

Residents

There are no confirmed living civilian residents in the Selûnite Outpost. The settlement was abandoned, and the remaining inhabitants are represented by ruins, documents, corpses, petrified drow and hostile creatures.

Story-associated characters

These characters belong to the petrified drow encounter rather than to an active town population.

Selûnites

The original builders were followers of Selûne. Their banners, statue, documents and defensive architecture all point to an organised attempt to establish a Selûnite foothold in the Underdark.

The documents suggest that the expedition required increasing support and supplies from the surface. Conflict with drow and other local inhabitants eventually contributed to its collapse. The failure also appears to have damaged or hastened the decline of the Selûnite temple above.

Eilistraeeans

The nearby Phalar Aluve ritual site is associated with Eilistraee, not Selûne. The two goddesses are distinct, even though the site’s moonlit imagery and its location near a Selûnite fortress can make the local religious history seem unified.

Lolth-sworn drow

The hidden stash and the petrified expedition connect the area with competing drow traditions. The outpost’s records refer to hostility from drow, while the nearby stash preserves Lolth-sworn material.

Myconids

The wider territory around the outpost falls within the influence of the myconids of Ebonlake Grotto. This does not make the outpost a myconid settlement. On entering much of this part of the Underdark, the party can be warned about Minotaurs through Rapport Spores. The myconids are a neighbouring regional faction, not residents of the fortress.

---

Enemies and hazards

Spectator

The Spectator is the principal set-piece enemy within the outpost’s immediate ruins. Its petrification-related abilities are central to the battlefield encounter, and the drow can complicate the fight if they are restored during combat.

Minotaurs

Minotaurs patrol the wider area near the Storehouse and the approach to the outpost. One may charge towards the gate, where the moonstone artillery can damage it. The Storehouse itself is a separate location, but its wandering Minotaurs are directly relevant to the outpost’s entrance.

Bulette

The area around the outpost is one of the places where a Bulette may be encountered. This is not necessarily a fixed fight that every party experiences in exactly the same way. Treat it as a regional encounter rather than as a permanent resident or named boss.

Environmental dangers

The tremor near the barricades is harmless and primarily atmospheric. It can prompt a party member’s reaction, but it is not itself an attack or quest failure condition.

---

Quests and progression

Find the Nightsong

The book In Search of the Nightsong, found at the feet of the Selûne statue, advances the investigation into the Nightsong. The outpost therefore functions as one of the early pieces of evidence in a much larger quest thread.

Reading the book is easy to miss if the party immediately destroys the Moonstone and leaves. Search around the statue before departing.

The Adamantine Forge

The petrified drow encounter is tied to the Adamantine Forge investigation.

The outpost does not contain the forge itself. Grymforge is a separate Underdark location and must not be treated as a subarea of Selûnite Outpost.

What is outside the boundary?

The following places are nearby but should not be merged into the Selûnite Outpost:

Keeping these boundaries separate matters because the enemies, factions, quests and loot associated with them are not all located at the outpost itself. The Underdark is a connected region made up of several named locations, and the game’s map can make their borders feel less obvious than their individual location pages suggest.
