Key takeaways

  • Shadowfell proper is separate from the Gauntlet of Shar The playable area is reached through the Shadowfell Entrance beyond the Verge of the Shadows.
  • Nightsong’s Prison is the only part of the Shadowfell directly accessible to the party in the base game. A separate Shadow Crossing is involved in Halsin’s quest, but the party does not explore that portal as a normal subarea.
  • Entering the Shadowfell is Act Two’s major point of no return Resolve important business in Act One, Moonrise Towers, Last Light Inn and the wider Shadow-Cursed Lands first.
  • The area is mostly linear Its main activity is crossing floating islands, fighting or bypassing Justiciars, and reaching Aylin at the bottom.
  • Balthazar’s status changes the encounter If he is still alive, he appears in the Shadowfell. If he was killed earlier, the final confrontation is instead centred on Aylin and Shadowheart’s decision.
  • The region contains a small number of fixed rewards and equipment pieces, not a conventional shopping district or settlement.

About this guide

Scope: This guide covers the playable Shadowfell region in the base game of Baldur’s Gate 3, chiefly the area labelled Nightsong’s Prison. It does not treat the entire Gauntlet of Shar as part of the Shadowfell. The Gauntlet, Grand Mausoleum, Verge of the Shadows and Shadowfell Entrance are connected locations in the Material Plane or transition areas, but they are separate from the Shadowfell proper.

About this guide

Major spoilers: This page discusses the identity of the Nightsong, Balthazar’s role, Shadowheart’s personal quest, the point of no return in Act Two and the major outcomes of the area.

Overview

The Shadowfell is a small but decisive region in Act Two of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is Shar’s domain, reached through a portal at the end of the Gauntlet of Shar. In the playable portion of the game, the Shadowfell is not a broad open-world zone with several towns or settlements. It is a linear, surreal prison made from floating islands and broken rock, descending towards the captive Nightsong.

The region’s importance is narrative rather than geographical. Here, the party discovers that the Nightsong is not a weapon, relic or abstract source of magic, but Dame Aylin, an immortal aasimar and daughter of Selûne. Ketheric Thorm’s immortality depends on Aylin’s repeated death and resurrection, while Balthazar has been sent to retrieve her for Moonrise Towers. The party must decide whether to free her, kill her or allow Balthazar to take her away.

Boundaries and hierarchy

The name Shadowfell can cause confusion because the game places several connected areas in the same quest sequence. Their boundaries are best understood as follows:

Shadow-Cursed Lands

This is the wider Act Two overworld, including places such as Last Light Inn, Moonrise Towers, Reithwin Town and the House of Healing. It is not the Shadowfell. The Shadow Curse is a Material Plane affliction that gives the region its darkness and hostile environment.

Grand Mausoleum

The Grand Mausoleum is a surface ruin north of the House of Healing. Solving its mural puzzle opens the route into the Gauntlet of Shar. It is an entrance structure, not part of the Shadowfell.

Gauntlet of Shar

The Gauntlet is Shar’s temple and trial complex beneath the mausoleum. It includes the Soft-Step Trial, Self-Same Trial, Faith-Leap Trial, Silent Library, Yurgir’s area, Balthazar’s quarters and the Pedestal of Reckoning. These are all distinct from the Shadowfell, even though they lead directly to it.

Verge of the Shadows and Shadowfell Entrance

The Verge of the Shadows is the lower Gauntlet area containing the final altar, a waypoint and the pool-like portal called the Shadowfell Entrance. The party reaches it after collecting the required Umbral Gems.

Shadowfell

The playable Shadowfell begins after the party enters the portal. Its accessible content is labelled Nightsong’s Prison. A separate Shadow Crossing is used temporarily by Halsin during the quest to lift the Shadow Curse, but it is not an explorable Shadowfell subarea for the player character.

Geography and atmosphere

The Shadowfell is presented as a place of weak gravity, broken terrain and negative energy. The party crosses a chain of floating islands suspended over a vast darkness. The terrain does not behave like ordinary rock: the characters can jump considerable distances, and the game automatically grants Feather Fall during the descent.

The route is effectively vertical. Rather than exploring a broad map, the party moves down through a series of increasingly isolated platforms. The descent reinforces the prison’s function: Aylin is not simply behind a locked door, but placed at the bottom of a supernatural void.

There are no ordinary roads, buildings, homes or civic structures. The few visible objects are associated with Shar’s Justiciars, Balthazar’s necromancy and Aylin’s imprisonment.

Access and routes

Required route

The Gauntlet’s three trials provide three Umbral Gems, while the fourth is associated with Yurgir’s area. The Silent Library is also important if Shadowheart is present because the Spear of Night is needed for her intended confrontation with the Nightsong.

The point of no return

Entering the Shadowfell through the Gauntlet is treated as a major progression lock. After this point, the party cannot return to Act One areas, and several unfinished quests are automatically resolved, usually unsuccessfully. If Moonrise Towers has not been properly visited first, significant content there can also be skipped or altered.

This lock occurs when entering the Shadowfell itself, not merely when beginning the Gauntlet. The party can normally explore much of the Gauntlet, leave and return before crossing the portal.

  8. 08
    Enter the Shadowfell Entrance.

Shadow Crossing

Status: Mission-only portal area.

Shadow Crossing is associated with Halsin’s attempt to enter the Shadowfell and recover Thaniel during Lift the Shadow Curse. The party defends the crossing while Halsin uses it, but does not explore it as a conventional region. It should therefore not be counted as an ordinary child area of Nightsong’s Prison.

Nightsong’s Prison

Status: Main playable Shadowfell area.

Nightsong’s Prison is a descending path of floating islands leading to the plateau where Aylin is held. The party begins near the upper islands and follows the route down. Several Justiciar Avengers appear along the way. They do not behave like normal roaming enemies: they materialise as the party approaches, urge the party onward and disappear again. They cannot be harmed and do not join combat in the usual way.

The prison contains the principal story encounter, the fixed equipment rewards and the only major combat encounter in the region.

Residents and characters

The Shadowfell has few conventional residents. Its inhabitants are mostly temporary visitors, summoned servants or supernatural guardians.

Dame Aylin, the Nightsong

Aylin is the central figure of the area. She is an immortal aasimar, the daughter of Selûne and the person Ketheric Thorm has used to maintain his invulnerability. Ketheric and Balthazar lured her into the Shadowfell, where she was imprisoned and repeatedly killed by Dark Justiciars. Her immortality allowed Ketheric to draw on her life force while she continued to revive.

At the end of the descent, the party finds Aylin bound in place by necromantic magic. She is not simply a quest object. She speaks, reacts to the party and can become a later camp follower and ally if freed.

Balthazar

Balthazar appears in the Shadowfell if he was not killed earlier in the Gauntlet. He claims the Nightsong for Ketheric and attempts to transport her to Moonrise Towers. The party can cooperate with him or turn against him.

If the party fights him in the Shadowfell, he raises undead servants from the surrounding bone piles. If he is defeated before entering the Shadowfell, this specific confrontation does not occur.

Shadowheart

Shadowheart’s presence is especially important. The Shadowfell is the climax of her Sharran storyline in Act Two. If she is present, Shar expects her to prove her devotion by dealing with the Nightsong. The player must give her space to make the decision or persuade her, depending on the desired outcome and the party’s accumulated approval choices.

Forcing the outcome without allowing Shadowheart to participate can cause her to leave the party permanently.

Justiciar Avengers

These are spectral or shadowy figures associated with Shar. In the Shadowfell they mainly serve as atmospheric guides rather than ordinary combatants. They appear and disappear as the party advances and cannot be attacked in the normal encounter sequence.

Balthazar’s Apostates

These reanimated skeletons appear if Balthazar is still alive when the party reaches the final confrontation.

Factions

Shar’s followers

The Shadowfell is claimed as Shar’s domain. The Gauntlet’s Dark Justiciars and the prison’s supernatural guardians represent her power. Shar’s purpose is not merely to hide Aylin, but to use her imprisonment as part of Ketheric’s immortality and Shadowheart’s religious test.

Ketheric Thorm’s forces

Ketheric is not physically present in the Shadowfell, but his interests govern the area. Balthazar has been sent to retrieve the Nightsong and preserve the source of Ketheric’s invulnerability.

Selûne and Aylin

Selûne has no conventional temple or resident clergy in the area. Her presence is represented through Aylin, whose identity reframes the conflict as a struggle between Shar and Selûne.

Faction directory

1. Enter the Shadowfell only when ready

Crossing the portal commits the party to the major Act Two progression sequence. If there are prisoners to rescue, traders to visit, companions to recruit or quests at Last Light Inn to complete, do them first.

2. Follow the floating islands

The route is linear, but the gaps can look impassable. The game provides Feather Fall, so use jumps confidently. If the party is separated, keep the group linked where possible because a poorly positioned character can land on a different platform or miss the route.

Search each larger rock before moving on. The area is sparse, but two Dark Justiciar Helms are placed along the descent.

3. Decide how to handle Balthazar

If Balthazar survived the Gauntlet, he meets the party and moves towards Aylin. The main choices are:

If fighting Balthazar, eliminate enemies that can create additional pressure and use the terrain carefully. The final area is more dangerous because the party may be surrounded by Apostate undead and because Balthazar can raise additional servants.

4. Reach Aylin

At the bottom of the prison, the party learns the truth about the Nightsong. This advances Find the Nightsong, Find Ketheric Thorm’s Relic and Shadowheart’s personal quest.

If Shadowheart is present, let the conversation develop before making the final choice. Her outcome is influenced by previous decisions and approval, not simply by one isolated dialogue line. The Spear of Night is the intended item for this sequence, but the most important requirement is managing Shadowheart’s choice rather than treating the area as a normal boss arena.

5. Choose the outcome

Free Aylin

The party can persuade or allow Shadowheart to spare Aylin, or intervene in a way that results in Aylin’s release. Aylin then flies towards Moonrise Towers and becomes involved in the assault on Ketheric. She can later become a camp follower and an ally for Gather Your Allies.

Freeing Aylin grants the Moonlight Glaive immediately. A further reward, Selûne’s Spear of Night, is received at camp if the relevant Shadowheart outcome is completed.

Kill Aylin

Shadowheart can kill Aylin with the Spear of Night if the necessary conditions are met. This permanently removes Aylin from the later story and changes the state of the Act Two finale. The reward associated with this route is Shar’s Spear of Evening.

Allow Balthazar to take Aylin

The party can aid Balthazar. Aylin is transported to Moonrise Towers, where the party reports to Ketheric and his followers. This preserves Balthazar’s immediate objective but has major consequences for the story and later encounters.

---

Enemies and encounters

The Shadowfell does not have a normal enemy ecosystem. Most of its opposition is fixed and linked to the final sequence.

Fixed encounters

The Apostates only appear in the relevant Balthazar confrontation. Their numbers and presence therefore depend on the party’s earlier decisions. The Shadowfell page records multiple instances of these enemy categories, while noting that the Apostate group appears when Balthazar is still alive upon entry.

Items and collectibles

The Shadowfell’s item list is short and fixed. There are no shops, merchants or randomised treasure tables specific to the region.

Dark Justiciar Helms

Two Dark Justiciar Helms can be found on the route through Nightsong’s Prison, each beside a skeleton. Their listed locations are approximately:

The helms provide bonuses associated with fighting while obscured and improve Constitution saving throws. Coordinates are included here as reference points rather than as a substitute for visual searching, since the floating-island route and camera angle can make exact positioning awkward.

Circle of Bones

The Circle of Bones is worn by Balthazar. It is conditional loot and is only available if the party fights and defeats him. It is not found as a free-standing chest reward.

Dark Justiciar equipment

Aylin is listed with Dark Justiciar Boots, Gauntlets and Half-Plate, but these are part of her character equipment and are not ordinary loot for the player. They should not be treated as collectible armour.

Quest rewards

The Moonlight Glaive is a rare +2 glaive with additional radiant damage, a permanent light effect and the Moonlight Butterflies weapon action.

Missions and progression

Find the Nightsong

This quest begins much earlier than the Shadowfell. In Act One, the party searches for a supposed relic. In Act Two, the search leads through the Grand Mausoleum and Gauntlet of Shar. The Shadowfell objective reveals that the relic is a living person, not an artefact.

Find Ketheric Thorm’s Relic

This version of the quest focuses on Balthazar’s attempt to retrieve the Nightsong for Ketheric. It can end with the party killing the Nightsong, freeing her or helping Balthazar transport her to Moonrise Towers.

The Chosen of Shar

This is the Shadowheart-focused branch of the sequence. It reaches its climax when Shadowheart must choose whether to kill Aylin. The result changes Shadowheart’s relationship with Shar, her equipment rewards and her later story.

Lift the Shadow Curse

The Shadowfell is involved indirectly through Shadow Crossing. The party does not complete the main curse-lifting work by exploring Nightsong’s Prison, but Halsin’s portal sequence establishes a connection between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and Shar’s plane.

Consequences and missable content

If Moonrise Towers has not been visited

Entering the Shadowfell can automatically advance or remove substantial Moonrise content. This can mean losing access to conversations, traders, prisoners and infiltration opportunities that were available beforehand.

If Shadowheart is not present

The sequence changes. Attempts to make an absent Shadowheart kill Aylin fail, and the party cannot reproduce every companion-specific outcome. Shadowheart may also leave permanently if the party denies her the chance to participate in the decision or if the relevant progression is mishandled.

If Balthazar is killed earlier

The Shadowfell becomes a different encounter. Balthazar and his Apostate servants do not appear there, and the party proceeds more directly to Aylin’s fate.

If Aylin is freed

Aylin travels to Moonrise Towers, contributes to the Act Two climax and may become a camp follower and later ally. She also begins the chain of events that eventually leads to her Act Three storyline involving Lorroakan.

Suggested exploration route

---

For a first playthrough, use this order

  1. 01
Make a manual save outside the Shadowfell portal.
  2. 02
Enter the portal with Shadowheart if pursuing her personal quest.
  3. 03
Jump down the floating-island route, checking the larger platforms for Dark Justiciar Helms.
  4. 04
Speak to Balthazar if he appears.
  5. 05
Decide whether to fight him before reaching Aylin or at the final plateau.
  6. 06
Search the area after combat for conditional loot.
  7. 07
Allow the Aylin and Shadowheart scene to play out without rushing through dialogue.
  8. 08
Free Aylin unless deliberately pursuing the Sharran route.
  9. 09
    Collect the Moonlight Glaive.
  10. 10
Use the exit portal near the mausoleum and prepare for the Moonrise Towers sequence.

Inside the Shadowfell

Lore

The Shadowfell is described in Baldur’s Gate 3 as a plane shaped by Shar from negative energy and shadow. Its weak gravity and fragmented geography reflect its connection to the Astral Plane and its separation from ordinary Material Plane physics. The game’s playable section focuses less on the broader inhabitants of the plane and more on Shar’s use of it as a prison.

The name “Nightsong” is deliberately misleading. The party spends much of the game expecting to find a magical relic, but the Shadowfell reveals that the Nightsong is Aylin. Ketheric’s immortality is therefore revealed as a cycle of imprisonment and sacrifice rather than a simple blessing or item effect.

The region also gives physical form to the conflict between Shar and Selûne. Shar’s domain is a place of isolation, negation and captivity, while Aylin embodies Selûne’s light, immortality and resistance. Releasing her turns the Shadowfell from a hidden prison into the starting point for the assault on Moonrise Towers.
