About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Three quests, character revelations, optional encounters and location-specific rewards.

Overview

Sharess’ Caress is a pleasure house in Wyrm’s Crossing, the bridge settlement between Rivington and the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. It is not merely a single brothel interior. The location includes the large three-storey eastern building, its upper rooms and bridge passage, balconies and roof access, the western section of the building, the entrance area beneath the bridge, and several outdoor encounters immediately around the premises.

The establishment is run by Mamzell Amira and, in a more literal sense, Kira the Cat. Its public rooms contain entertainers, patrons, traders and investigators, while its private rooms connect to several of Act Three’s most important storylines. These include the Open Hand Temple murders, the Guild and Zhentarim conflict, Raphael’s dealings with Kith’rak Voss, Arfur Gregorio’s suspicious toys, and the player’s access to the Lower City.

Sharess’ Caress should therefore be treated as a story hub within Wyrm’s Crossing, not as a self-contained leisure location. Its opposite neighbour, Fraygo’s Flophouse, is a separate location with its own interiors, characters and quest evidence. It is important to search both buildings without merging their contents together.

Entrance and reception

Mamzell Amira stands near the entrance and is the main point of contact for the establishment. She can offer the party the services of one of the entertainers, explain the house’s arrangements and begin the quest Find the ‘Stern Librarian’ Ffion if the party has not already investigated the matter.

If Ffion’s fate has already been discovered in Fraygo’s Flophouse, Amira can be told what happened. Completing this conversation provides the quest outcome without requiring the party to repeat the investigation.

Amira also carries or can provide access to the Sharess’ Caress Rooms Key, depending on the quest state. This is the most convenient way to enter the otherwise locked themed rooms.

Kira the Cat wanders near the entrance. Treating her respectfully can produce hints about several patrons and residents. Kira is not just scenery, despite her unconventional role in the establishment’s management.

Bar

The bar is tended by Hoots Hooligan, who is also a trader. Hoots sells drinks, including Hoots’ Hooch, and offers the party a special drink.

Drinking it immediately produces companion approval or disapproval depending on who is present. Keeping the drink and consuming it later can have a more troublesome result, including a blackout and a prison-cell scene. The safest approach is to avoid treating the drink as an ordinary consumable until you understand the consequences.

The bar is also where the party can encounter:

Earspoon is associated with the Rivington Rats, while Borgus Elamin is a Zhentarim agent. Listening carefully to their discussion can require passive History and Perception checks before the party can properly understand its importance.

Kitchen and cellar

The kitchen belongs to Sauceman Chorizo, another trader. He sells Camp Supplies and reacts poorly to customers who treat the kitchen as another themed playroom.

The adjacent cellar is locked and red-outlined. A named revolutionary-minded rat can be found within. This is a small environmental encounter rather than a major combat area, but it contributes to the location’s wider network of ordinary inhabitants and minor political tensions.

Music hall

Behind curtains near the ground floor is a small music hall with a performance space. Monsieur Chapeau provides the music, while Queen Rhol the Despoiler dances on stage.

The music hall is also where the party meets the drow twins:

The twins’ available interactions depend on the party’s romance state, the companions present and whether the Ffion storyline has been resolved. Their services can be arranged individually or together, subject to the party’s current relationships and dialogue choices.

The drow twins’ encounters can provide approval or disapproval, inspiration and, in relevant circumstances, access to the Underdark Pleasures room.

Ground-floor named directory

Patrons and visitors

The exact placement of some characters changes with quest progression. Arfur, Valeria, Raphael and Voss are particularly dependent on previous choices and story state.

---

The upper floor contains four distinctive themed rooms. They are not all equally accessible, and their locks do not all have the same narrative function.

Nymph’s Grotto

Nymph’s Grotto is the first themed room on the left when ascending to the upper floor. Its entrance is covered in foliage and its interior resembles a forest clearing.

Inside are Naoise Nallinto and Fist Jara. Entering at the wrong moment interrupts their encounter and causes Jara to undergo ceremorphosis, leading to a fight.

After the encounter, speak to Naoise. A passive DC 10 Insight check can allow the party to choose between:

An Admission Pass can also be found near the pool ledge, alongside Jara’s armour and sword. The room contains one of the Sharess’ Caress Rooms Keys on a shelf.

If you want the room’s rewards and dialogue, enter with enough time to deal with the ceremorphosis encounter. If the party is already searching for the Ffion quest key, inspect the room after speaking to Amira, since the key and other access options may change what is available.

Elminster’s Library

Elminster’s Library is themed around teaching, scholarship and domination. It is normally locked, but it can be lockpicked with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check.

If Amira has asked the party to investigate Ffion’s disappearance, she can provide the key. Inside, the most relevant object is Ffion’s Journal, which offers a clue concerning the missing librarian.

The roof route is useful for exploration and may provide a way to move around the upper section without passing through every internal doorway.

Devil’s Den

Devil’s Den is the most important room from a main-story perspective. Unlike the other themed playrooms, it is not normally locked.

The room is decorated in red and functions as Raphael’s private parlour in Baldur’s Gate. If Kith’rak Voss is still alive, he can be found attempting to bargain with Raphael. Entering the room causes Raphael to dismiss Voss and address the party directly.

This begins or advances Deal with the Devil. The meeting is also significant for the githyanki storyline, including:

Three letters on Raphael’s desk refer to his debtors and contain instructions connected to Blaze Portyr’s reputation and possible political advancement. These letters are useful lore objects even if the party does not accept Raphael’s proposal.

Devil’s Den

Underdark Pleasures

Underdark Pleasures is the westernmost themed room. Although it is part of the upper-floor layout, it occupies the second floor of the western section of the building across the bridge passage.

The room is normally locked because Nym and Sorn generally wait for clients in the music hall. If the party arranges an encounter with either twin, or with both, they lead the party there and open the room.

Its interior is designed to resemble the Underdark, with giant mushrooms, glowing bulbs and a young sussur tree. The tree is decorative and does not produce the normal magic-suppression effect associated with sussur.

Find the ‘Stern Librarian’ Ffion

This is the location’s defining side quest.

Ffion’s body and the murder evidence are in Fraygo’s Flophouse, not Sharess’ Caress. The Flophouse attic can be opened with the Flowery Key, by lockpicking, or by reaching the outside balcony through traversal. Its hidden room contains documents associated with the killer and the Open Hand Temple murders.

Reporting Ffion’s fate to Amira can resolve the quest and unlock a reward involving the drow twins.

Recommended sequence

  1. 01
Speak to Mamzell Amira before searching too deeply.
  2. 02
    Agree to help locate Ffion.
  3. 03
Receive access to the locked rooms, including the relevant key.
  4. 04
Search Elminster’s Library for Ffion’s Journal.
  5. 05
Go to Fraygo’s Flophouse opposite Sharess’ Caress.
  6. 06
Search its upper floors and attic.
  7. 07
Investigate the hidden room and locate Ffion’s body.
  8. 08
Return to Amira and report what happened.

Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders

Sharess’ Caress is one of the places where this investigation comes together, but much of the actual evidence is found elsewhere.

Once the party has collected suitable evidence, speak to Investigator Valeria on the balcony above the bar. She may initially dismiss or challenge the party’s conclusions. Showing her the Bloodstained Parchment found in the killer’s hideout causes her to accept the evidence and issue a pass for the Lower City.

Investigate the Suspicious Toys

If the party has investigated the explosive toys and dealt with the associated situation, Arfur Gregorio may be found at Sharess’ Caress, depending on how his conflict with the refugee squatters was resolved.

If the party explored the basement of his mansion and followed the suspicious-toy investigation, Arfur can provide an Admission Pass. This provides another route into the political events surrounding Gortash’s coronation.

Aid the Underduke

Speak to Earspoon and Borgus Elamin at the bar. Their conversation concerns the Guild, Nine-Fingers Keene and the balance of power in Baldur’s Gate.

A passive History check followed by a passive Perception check may be required to understand the full significance of what they are discussing. This can begin or advance Aid the Underduke.

Deal with the Devil

Enter Devil’s Den to meet Raphael. If Kith’rak Voss is still alive, the scene also progresses the githyanki storyline.

This is a major decision point. Raphael’s offer concerns the party’s wider struggle and should not be treated as a minor local conversation. Save before entering if you want to compare outcomes.

The location’s notable loot includes items that are purchased, found, quest rewards or character-dependent drops. They should not all be treated as guaranteed rewards in every run.

Before leaving

---

Sharess’ Caress is named for Sharess, the Faerûnian goddess associated with festhalls, pleasure and sensual fulfilment. In the game, the building presents itself as an oasis of comfort and indulgence, but it also reflects the instability of Baldur’s Gate as the city prepares for war.

The location’s design deliberately juxtaposes pleasure with danger:

The themed rooms also echo different fantasies and social identities: pastoral nature in Nymph’s Grotto, scholarship and authority in Elminster’s Library, infernal power in Devil’s Den and the Underdark in the twins’ private room.

Several background inspirations can be earned here. Examples include Alternative Vocations for Guild Artisans, Giving a Private Performance for Entertainers, Carnal Rituals of Sharess for Acolytes, and Exsanguinated Ecstasy for Haunted Ones after the relevant encounters.

---

Is Fraygo’s Flophouse part of Sharess’ Caress?

No. It is a separate location opposite Sharess’ Caress in Wyrm’s Crossing. The two locations are linked by quests, but their interiors, characters and loot should be catalogued separately.

Where is Ffion?

Ffion Goldgrind’s body is found in the hidden room in the attic of Fraygo’s Flophouse, not inside Sharess’ Caress. Elminster’s Library contains her Journal and helps connect the investigation to the pleasure house.

How do I open the locked rooms?

Use the Sharess’ Caress Rooms Key, lockpick the relevant door, or use available balcony and roof routes. Amira can provide the key during the Ffion quest, and another copy can be found in Nymph’s Grotto.

How do I get into the Lower City?

Progress the murder investigation, collect the required evidence and show the Bloodstained Parchment to Valeria at Sharess’ Caress. She can then provide a pass for the Lower City.

Can I meet Raphael here?

Yes. Raphael occupies Devil’s Den, where he can be found negotiating with Kith’rak Voss if Voss is still alive. Entering the room progresses Deal with the Devil.

Is the sussur tree in Underdark Pleasures functional?

No confirmed magic-suppression effect is associated with the decorative young sussur tree in that room. It is an environmental feature rather than a second source of the Underdark’s normal sussur mechanics.

---

This guide covers the verified base-game Sharess’ Caress location and its directly attached exterior space. The main unresolved area is the exact timing of some character placements after major Act Three quest changes. In particular, Arfur Gregorio, Valeria, Kith’rak Voss and some patrons can move or disappear depending on earlier choices.

The guide does not treat every decorative prop, unnamed patron or generic container as a named directory entry. It also keeps Fraygo’s Flophouse outside the location boundary, despite its strong quest connection and proximity.
