About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Two locations, Shadowheart’s Sharran storyline, the sanctuary’s saving throws, its hidden altar, and the consequences of stealing the Ritual Dagger of Shar.
Overview
The Sharran Sanctuary is a small hidden shrine beneath the central square of Reithwin Town in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. It is an Act Two location in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it is not the Gauntlet of Shar, the Grand Mausoleum, the House of Healing, or any other Sharran site elsewhere in the game. The sanctuary is a self-contained underground fane with three blessing statues, a concealed altar chamber, and a set of guardian constructs that defend the site if its trials are failed or its sacred dagger is taken.
Its main rewards are temporary ability bonuses, several consumable items, approval from Shadowheart in the appropriate circumstances, and the Ritual Dagger of Shar. The sanctuary is optional and is not required to enter the Gauntlet of Shar or complete the main Act Two storyline. Its most useful feature is the opportunity to gain up to three temporary +5 ability bonuses, although the associated saving throws can instead impose penalties and summon a fight.
---
Nearby but separate locations
The Grand Mausoleum and Gauntlet of Shar are not connected internally to the Sharran Sanctuary. Reaching the Gauntlet requires travelling to the mausoleum in the northern part of Reithwin Town and solving its own entrance puzzle.

Nearby but separate locations
Route from Reithwin Town
The sanctuary is easiest to locate by travelling through the middle of Reithwin Town towards the large statue of Ketheric Thorm. The statue stands in the settlement’s central square and is surrounded by three plaques. The entrance is not visible until the plaques have been activated in the correct order.
The route is exposed to the Shadow Curse. Characters without suitable protection may need a light source, a Moonlantern, or another means of surviving the cursed areas while travelling through Reithwin. The sanctuary itself is described as providing protection from the curse once entered, and party members may comment on the change.
Note
OUR LADY OF LOSS MISTRESS OF PAIN WHEN NIGHT FALLS THORM SHALL RISE
Opening the plaque puzzle
Circle around the base of the statue and interact with the three plaques. Perception checks can reveal them, although the entrance can still be solved once their positions are understood.
When activated correctly, the plaques form the following stanza:
The southern side of the statue’s basement then opens, revealing a staircase down to the shrine. Characters with the Entertainer background can receive the Tales of Yore inspiration, while characters with the Sage background can receive Tenets of Loss.
Practical advice
---
The statue is located in a dangerous section of Reithwin Town. Approaching the central square for the first time can trigger a battle against three Shadows and four Shadow-Cursed Harpers. This encounter is not treated as an ambush, so the party is not automatically surprised.
The exact situation can change depending on how the party handled the Cult of the Absolute convoy. If the party previously convinced Kar’niss and the convoy to proceed into the curse without protection after siding with the Harpers, the drider and the rest of the convoy may later appear in shadow-cursed form near the central square. They can join the surrounding fight if the battle extends into their area.
The later Oliver encounter associated with Lift the Shadow Curse also takes place in the central Reithwin area, but Oliver’s shadowy family is not part of the sanctuary. Treat that event as a neighbouring Reithwin Town activity.
---
The sanctuary contains three large statues of Shar. Each statue tests a different ability and can grant a blessing that lasts until the next Long Rest.
The blessings are not permanent character upgrades. They are temporary conditions intended to reward successful interaction with the shrine. Each statue can grant its blessing only once. The checks do not all have to be completed by the same party member.
Activate the plaques in this order
- 01Northern plaque
- 02Western plaque
- 03Eastern plaque
Blessing statues
All blessings and penalties last until the next Long Rest. A failed check also starts combat against the sanctuary’s three Sentinels.
Blessing statues
| Statue | Check | Reward on success | Penalty on failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| South-eastern statue | DC 14 Wisdom saving throw | Dark Lady’s Awareness, +5 Wisdom | Dark Lady’s Reckoning, –5 Wisdom |
| North-eastern statue | DC 14 Intelligence saving throw | Dark Lady’s Erudition, +5 Intelligence | Dark Lady’s Fool, –5 Intelligence |
| Central statue | DC 14 Charisma saving throw | Dark Lady’s Grace, +5 Charisma | Dark Lady’s Ire, –5 Charisma |
Who has an advantage?
Clerics have advantage on the relevant statue checks, regardless of which deity they follow. Warlocks receive advantage on the Charisma-related test, with special dialogue depending on their patron. These class interactions are useful, but they are not required to complete the shrine.
Shadowheart has a special relationship with this location:
Recommended order of exploration
Because the benefits disappear after a Long Rest, they are most useful shortly before a difficult sequence rather than as general permanent improvements.
---
Passing all three statue tests opens access to a concealed chamber behind the main shrine. This chamber contains an altar to Shar and the Ritual Dagger of Shar.
To use the altar, interact with it and pass a passive DC 10 Religion check. Completing the blood sacrifice ritual causes rewards to appear on the two plinths beside the altar. It also grants Shadowheart approval under the relevant circumstances.
The exact placement is associated with the two plinths beside the altar. These are fixed sanctuary rewards rather than random enemy drops.
Characters with certain backgrounds can gain inspiration for completing the ritual:
Recommended order of exploration: The safest approach is
- 01Save before interacting with any statue.
- 02Use the character with the strongest relevant saving throw.
- 03Use a cleric where possible.
- 04Let Shadowheart attempt the interactions if she still follows Shar.
- 05Avoid taking the dagger until you have completed the blessings and altar ritual.
- 06Long Rest only after you have collected any temporary bonuses you still need.
Recommended order of exploration
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Acolyte | Honing the Darkness |
| Sage | Partaking in Local Customs |
The Ritual Dagger of Shar
The dagger is the sanctuary’s principal named item. It is found in the hidden altar chamber and is not required to complete the shrine’s blessing sequence.
Taking the dagger triggers combat with the three Sentinels. This happens whether or not the altar ritual has been completed. Shadowheart disapproves if another character takes it, although she does not give the same reaction if she is the one who picks it up. Characters with the Criminal background can gain A Dark Edge, while characters with the Guild Artisan background can gain Ruthless Craftsmanship.
Loot directory
---
The sanctuary has no ordinary population, shopkeeper or resident priest. Its hostile defenders are summoned or activated as a result of the party’s actions.
Sanctuary Sentinels
They appear when the party fails one of the statue checks or attacks a statue. They also defend the altar chamber if the Ritual Dagger of Shar is taken. Once combat begins, the sanctuary’s exit is closed and locked until all Sentinels are defeated.
This makes the shrine a poor place to provoke combat casually. If you want the temporary blessings and altar rewards without a fight, use your strongest saving throws and avoid attacking the statues.
Nearby surface enemies
The creatures around the central square are not sanctuary guardians. Depending on the party’s route through Act Two, the surrounding area can contain:
These encounters belong to the Reithwin Town exterior rather than the sanctuary proper.
---
Named characters inside the sanctuary
No ordinary named NPC is listed as residing in the sanctuary. The location is a shrine and trial site rather than a populated settlement.
Story-associated characters
Shadowheart
Shadowheart is the most important companion for this location. Her reactions and available dialogue depend on her relationship with Shar and on whether she has completed the Nightsong-related turning point.
The sanctuary is therefore useful as a small companion-focused location even though it is not a required part of Daughter of Darkness.
Factions
There are no functional shops, businesses, purchasable properties or ordinary services inside the Sharran Sanctuary.
---
Factions
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Shar and her Sharran faith | The sanctuary is dedicated to Shar and is protected by her magical guardians. |
| Shadow-Cursed creatures | Present around the wider Reithwin Town square depending on progression. |
| Cult of the Absolute | Relevant to the changing state of the nearby convoy, but not the sanctuary’s owner or resident faction. |
Peaceful completion
- 01Travel to the centre of Reithwin Town.
- 02Locate Ketheric Thorm’s statue.
- 03Circle the statue and identify the three plaques.
- 04Activate them in the order north, west, east.
- 05Descend the newly revealed staircase.
- 06Save the game before interacting with the blessing statues.
- 07Use characters with the strongest relevant saving throws.
- 08Complete the Wisdom, Intelligence and Charisma tests.
- 09Enter the hidden altar chamber.
- 10Interact with the altar and pass the passive DC 10 Religion check.
- 11Collect the potions and scrolls from the plinths.
- 12Take the Ritual Dagger only if you are prepared to fight the Sentinels.
Combat completion
If a test is failed, a statue is attacked, or the dagger is stolen:
---
Combat completion: steps
- 01Position the party before triggering the fight where possible.
- 02Expect the three Sentinels to appear.
- 03Keep the party together because the exit is sealed during combat.
- 04Defeat the Charismatic, Intelligent and Wise Sentinels.
- 05Search the sanctuary again once the battle ends.
- 06Check whether the intended blessing or altar rewards were collected before leaving.
Route A: Shrine first
This route is best if you want the sanctuary’s rewards early.
Route A: Shrine first: steps
- 01Enter Reithwin Town.
- 02Deal with or avoid the central-square encounter.
- 03Open the statue entrance.
- 04Complete the three blessings.
- 05Perform the altar ritual.
- 06Leave the dagger alone until you are ready for combat.
- 07Continue towards the tollhouse, Waning Moon or House of Healing.
Route B: Reithwin Town sweep
This route reduces backtracking.
Route B: Reithwin Town sweep: steps
- 01Enter Reithwin Town and activate the relevant waypoint.
- 02Explore the central square.
- 03Visit the Sharran Sanctuary.
- 04Investigate the Waning Moon and Reithwin Tollhouse.
- 05Travel north towards the House of Healing and Grand Mausoleum.
- 06Enter the Gauntlet of Shar separately through the mausoleum.
Route C: Shadowheart-focused run
---
The sanctuary does not have a large questline of its own, but its interactions can change with Shadowheart’s progression.
Route C: Shadowheart-focused run: steps
- 01Bring Shadowheart.
- 02Let her speak during the statue interactions.
- 03Complete the blessings through her special Shar dialogue if available.
- 04Perform the altar ritual with her.
- 05Check her approval response.
- 06Delay the Nightsong-related progression if you still want her earlier Sharran dialogue and the sanctuary’s original interaction state.
Shadowheart’s allegiance
Shadowheart’s available dialogue depends on whether she still serves Shar. A loyal Shadowheart can bypass the statue saving throws. If she rejects Shar after the Nightsong sequence, the interaction becomes more difficult because of disadvantage, although the Selûne’s Spear of Night can offset this in the relevant circumstances.
Act Two progression
The sanctuary is an Act Two location in Reithwin Town. As with many locations in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, advancing major Act Two events can affect access to quests and encounters elsewhere in the region. The shrine’s own blessing and guardian mechanics are fixed, but the surface encounters around it may differ depending on how the party handled the Harpers, Kar’niss and the Absolute convoy.
Temporary rewards
The three ability blessings are easy to waste because they vanish on the next Long Rest. Do not obtain them long before a difficult encounter unless you are happy to lose them. They are best used immediately for:
---
The shrine shows that Shar’s influence in the Shadow-Cursed Lands extends beyond the famous Gauntlet of Shar. It is a smaller local fane, built around ritual, secrecy and tests of personal qualities that Shar’s followers value or manipulate: insight, intellect and persuasion.
The entrance inscription links Shar’s identity as the Lady of Loss with Ketheric Thorm’s rise. The sanctuary therefore sits thematically between Reithwin’s older religious history and Ketheric’s later transformation. Its statues do not present a conventional temple service. Instead, they turn devotion into a gamble: a character asks for Shar’s favour, proves their worth through a saving throw, and risks receiving a curse-like penalty if they fail.
The sanctuary also helps distinguish the several Sharran locations in the game:
Shar’s wider presence in the game includes the Gauntlet, the House of Grief and other Sharran sites, but these should not be merged into a single location or progression chain.

Is the Sharran Sanctuary the Gauntlet of Shar?
No. The Sharran Sanctuary is a small shrine beneath Reithwin Town’s central statue. The Gauntlet of Shar is a separate, much larger dungeon reached through the Grand Mausoleum.
Do I need Shadowheart?
No. Any party can enter and attempt the trials. Shadowheart is simply the most thematically appropriate companion and has special dialogue and mechanical advantages.
Can the three blessings be permanent?
No. Each blessing lasts only until the next Long Rest.
What happens if I fail a statue test?
You receive the corresponding –5 ability penalty and summon the three Sanctuary Sentinels. The exit is sealed until they are defeated.
Can I get the dagger without fighting?
No. Taking the Ritual Dagger of Shar triggers combat with the three Sentinels, whether or not you have completed the altar ritual.
Is the sanctuary required for Shadowheart’s quest?
No. It provides additional dialogue, approval opportunities and rewards, but it is not required to complete Shadowheart’s main storyline.
Are there shops or vendors here?
No verified functional shop, business or service operates inside the sanctuary. It is a shrine, trial area and loot location.
