Key takeaways
- The Tadpoling Centre is reached only after the party enters the Mind Flayer Colony during the assault on Moonrise Towers, following the first confrontation with Ketheric Thorm.
- The main room contains ten wall-mounted Mind Flayer Pods, a Neural Apparatus, four mind flayers, several captives and a group of Intellect Devourers.
- The Neural Apparatus affects the pods as a group The party can open them, purge them, or leave them unchanged for later.
- Opening the pods starts a battle The freed humanoid captives become temporary allies, while the released mind flayers and Intellect Devourers attack.
- Purging the pods kills everyone still inside, including Zevlor, Gauntlet Yeva and Manip Shuurga. This prevents the normal rescue outcome for Find Zevlor.
- The adjoining brine-pool room contains Mizora, an optional parasite specimen, a Dark Urge clue and the book Suspended Ceremorphosis.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Two story events, the Mind Flayer Colony, Find Zevlor, Wyll’s pact, Mizora’s rescue, the Dark Urge, and possible Act Three consequences.
Overview
The Tadpoling Centre is a contained location inside the Mind Flayer Colony, beneath Moonrise Towers, in Act Two of Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not a broad region in its own right. The name principally refers to the round pod chamber containing captives and newly created mind flayers, together with the adjoining room of empty brine pools and two additional pods. The surrounding Mind Flayer Colony is a separate, larger location with its own rooms, enemies, puzzles and route towards Ketheric Thorm.
The centre is the main location for resolving Find Zevlor, and it can also determine whether the party rescues or kills several captive characters. Its second room contains Mizora, a potential reward for Wyll, a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, and Dark Urge-specific evidence about the protagonist’s past.

Brine-pool room
The game does not present the brine-pool room as a separately named map location. It is best understood as an included room within the Tadpoling Centre.

How to reach the Tadpoling Centre
The Tadpoling Centre is not normally accessible during the earlier Moonrise Towers exploration. It becomes available during the assault sequence after the initial Ketheric Thorm encounter. The party descends into the Mind Flayer Colony and must proceed through the opening section before reaching the centre.
Practical route
The Tadpoling Centre is part of a largely linear late-Act Two sequence. If the party advances too far through the colony or completes the relevant confrontation without investigating the centre, some opportunities may be missed.
Practical route
- 01Progress the Moonrise Towers storyline until the first confrontation with Ketheric Thorm.
- 02Enter the Mind Flayer Colony.
- 03Follow the opening corridor after destroying the fleshy membrane.
- 04Take the first left turn.
- 05Enter through the Flesh-Wrought Door.
- 06Inspect the pods before using the Neural Apparatus.
- 07Continue through the passage opposite the entrance to reach the brine-pool room.
Suggested exploration order
For the best chance of seeing the available content:
This order preserves the opportunity to handle Mizora separately and reduces the risk of entering the main fight before completing the room’s other interactions.
---
The main room is roughly circular, with four detached fleshy pillars and ten pods arranged around the walls. Some pods are empty, some hold mind flayers, and others contain humanoids the party may already know. Each pod has an illuminated control button. Red indicates an empty pod, while cyan indicates an occupied pod. Interacting with occupied pods produces brief narration about the person inside.
Suggested exploration order: steps
- 01Enter the main chamber.
- 02Inspect each occupied pod and speak to the nearby characters if possible.
- 03Search the room for objects and read any books.
- 04Check the brine pools and attempt to obtain the parasite specimen.
- 05Investigate Mizora’s pod before making a final decision at the main Neural Apparatus.
- 06Return to the main pod chamber.
- 07Create a manual save.
- 08Decide whether to release or purge the captives.
- 09Protect the freed survivors during the battle.
- 10Speak to Zevlor, Yeva and Manip Shuurga after combat.
Pod contents
The pod arrangement is described from the entrance.
Left side of the entrance
This arrangement is a room directory rather than a list of separate quests. The three named humanoids are the important rescue targets in the chamber.
Named occupants directory
Zevlor
Zevlor is found inside one of the main-room pods. He is the central target of Find Zevlor. If released and kept alive, he explains that he was enthralled by the Absolute after the tiefling refugees’ caravan was attacked. The Absolute offered him the possibility of regaining his paladin status, and he regrets accepting its influence.
If Zevlor survives, the quest is completed through the post-battle conversation. He then says that he will help the other survivors escape. A successful outcome can make Zevlor and a Hellrider squad available as support during Gather Your Allies in Act Three.
Gauntlet Yeva
Gauntlet Yeva is one of the living captives in the main chamber. After the rescue, she provides information about Duke Ravengard. Her account indicates that Ravengard was taken from his pod shortly before the party arrived and was still human enough to resist his captors.
Manip Shuurga
Manip Shuurga is another captive. After being freed, she expresses regret that she was unable to help Duke Ravengard. Her presence reinforces that the colony has been processing more than the refugees and prisoners encountered elsewhere in Act Two.
Occupants and pod directory
The four mind flayers and the three named humanoids are the relevant living occupants of the main pod array. The empty pod associated with Duke Ravengard is evidence of his recent removal, not a place where Ravengard can be rescued.
---
The Neural Apparatus is positioned to the right of the passage leading towards the brine pools. It controls the pods in the main room. A community database places it at approximately X: 689, Y: 17.
The device operates the pod group together. The party cannot selectively free Zevlor while leaving the mind flayers sealed, nor purge only the hostile occupants. This makes the decision deliberately uncomfortable: rescuing the captives also releases the mind flayers.
When activated, it offers three broad outcomes
| Choice | Immediate result | Long-term consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Open the pods | Starts combat | Survivors can be rescued and Zevlor’s quest can be completed |
| Purge the pods | Kills those still inside | Zevlor and the other captives die |
| Leave them alone | No immediate combat | The apparatus can be used later |
Opening the pods
The newly freed humanoid captives join the party as allies. The mind flayers immediately become hostile, while the Intellect Devourers also enter the battle on the mind flayers’ side.
Combat advice
The survivors are useful additional combatants, but their presence also creates a protection objective. A spell that is harmless to the main enemy group can still ruin the rescue if it damages Zevlor or another freed captive.
Purging the pods
Purging kills all occupants who remain in the pod array, including the humanoid captives. This means:
Purging is therefore the clearest permanent failure state for the location’s rescue content.
Approval and companion reactions
The decision can produce companion Approval or Disapproval. Releasing the captives is reported as approved by Shadowheart and Karlach, and disapproved by Astarion, Minthara and Lae’zel. Reactions can vary according to party composition and the exact dialogue choices used.
---
The passage opposite the main entrance leads to a second room containing a cascade of larval brine pools. The pools resemble those seen during the Nautiloid prologue, but they are empty of larvae. The Dream Guardian reacts to this discovery.
This room is easy to overlook because the main pod chamber contains the obvious quest objective. It should be explored before leaving the colony.
Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen
The leftmost brine pool can contain one final Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen. Acquiring it requires passing a DC 16 Perception check. It is a fixed discovery associated with the pool rather than a random enemy drop.
Acquisition checklist
If the check fails, the party may need to reload or rely on a different approach to maximise the chance of detecting it. The parasite is useful for characters pursuing the game’s illithid power system, although using tadpoles is a character-choice matter rather than a requirement for completing the Tadpoling Centre.
Acquisition checklist
- 01Enter the brine-pool room.
- 02Search the leftmost pool.
- 03Pass the DC 16 Perception check.
- 04Collect the parasite specimen if it is revealed.

One of the additional pods in the brine-pool room contains Mizora, Wyll’s cambion patron. Her rescue is a major part of Wyll’s Act Two storyline.
This is not the same pod-control sequence as the main chamber. Mizora’s pod has its own panel with two switches marked by illithid symbols. The party must decipher the symbols with a DC 10 Arcana check. One switch frees Mizora, while the other kills her. The pod can also be broken open with a DC 14 Strength check.
Mizora rescue outcomes
Freeing Mizora
Freeing Mizora allows the party to continue Wyll’s pact storyline. If the party persuades her to provide a reward with a DC 14 Persuasion check, she grants the Infernal Rapier. The reward requires Wyll to be present in the party during the rescue. Mizora also removes Wyll’s restriction on speaking about the pact before departing.
Killing Mizora
Killing Mizora in the pod immediately kills Wyll as well, even if Wyll is already dead at the time. This is one of the location’s most severe companion-related consequences.
Breaking the pod
The Strength option is an alternative way to open Mizora’s pod. It is not a separate reward route, but it may be useful for parties that do not want to rely on the Arcana interaction.
Mizora directory
---
The Ruptured Mind Flayer Pod to the left of Mizora’s pod has special significance for the Dark Urge.
A DC 10 Investigation check can reveal that the blood on the pod casing is fresh. If Astarion is present, he can confirm that the blood belongs to the Dark Urge. A subsequent DC 10 Charisma check can trigger memories of imprisonment, including the laughter and taunts of the woman who betrayed the protagonist. This adds material to the Dark Urge’s Open Your Scars quest.
Dark Urge investigation steps
This content is specific to the Dark Urge origin. Other protagonists can inspect the same object, but they do not receive the same personal-memory sequence.
---
Dark Urge investigation steps: steps
- 01Examine the ruptured pod.
- 02Pass the DC 10 Investigation check.
- 03Ask Astarion to inspect or identify the blood if he is present.
- 04Attempt the DC 10 Charisma check.
- 05Allow the recovered memory to play out.
Fixed items directory
The book Suspended Ceremorphosis is attributed to Enver Gortash and dictated to Scribe Yanthus. It describes the unusual effect of the Absolute’s enhanced tadpoles: rather than causing ordinary rapid ceremorphosis, they leave hosts in a suspended state that makes them vulnerable to the Absolute’s influence while retaining their humanoid bodies.
Reward conditions
The centre does not contain a shop, merchant, waypoint, purchasable property or ordinary service provider. Its rewards are tied to exploration, dialogue, rescue and quest progression.
---
Reward conditions
| Reward | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen | Locate it in the leftmost brine pool and pass DC 16 Perception |
| Infernal Rapier | Rescue Mizora, have Wyll present, and pass DC 14 Persuasion |
| Zevlor and Hellrider support | Rescue Zevlor, keep him alive and complete the related quest outcome |
| Lore from Suspended Ceremorphosis | Find and read the book |
Enemy directory
Mind flayers
Four mind flayers occupy pods in the main chamber. They become hostile when the pod array is opened. They are not random spawns and do not represent a repeatable encounter.
Intellect Devourers
Six Intellect Devourers patrol the Tadpoling Centre and nearby corridors. When the pods are opened, they join the fight on the side of the mind flayers.
Freed survivors
Zevlor, Gauntlet Yeva and Manip Shuurga are not enemies when released. They fight alongside the party, but can become hostile if damaged by the party. This includes accidental damage from area-of-effect attacks.
Encounter checklist
---
Find Zevlor
The Tadpoling Centre is the resolution point for Find Zevlor. If the pods are opened and Zevlor survives the battle, speaking with him reveals what happened to the refugees’ caravan and completes the quest. He then plans to lead the rescued survivors out of the colony.
The rescue route can contribute to Gather Your Allies in Act Three. Zevlor and a Hellrider squad may become available as an aide, provided Zevlor survives and the relevant quest state is completed.
Wyll’s pact
Mizora’s presence creates a major Wyll progression point. If Wyll has been recruited and remains alive, rescuing Mizora allows the party to continue the pact storyline. Killing her in the pod kills Wyll as well, so this is not a harmless alternative interaction.
Open Your Scars
For a Dark Urge character, the ruptured pod can add a memory sequence to Open Your Scars. This is independent of Zevlor’s rescue and Mizora’s quest, so a single visit can advance several different storylines.
---
The Tadpoling Centre shows the Absolute’s method of mass transformation more directly than most Act Two locations. The captives are not simply imprisoned. They are held in a controlled process that can produce mind flayers while maintaining the larger system of coercion and obedience described in Suspended Ceremorphosis.
The book’s account explains that the enhanced tadpoles created under the Crown of Karsus do not behave like ordinary illithid larvae. They produce a suspended state in which the host remains physically humanoid but becomes susceptible to the Absolute’s telepathic control. This helps explain why many cult members can continue to function socially and politically while serving the Absolute without consciously questioning their loyalty.
The empty pod retaining traces of Duke Ravengard’s personality and Yeva’s testimony also connect the centre to the wider prisoner-transfer system. Ravengard was removed shortly before the party’s arrival, making the Tadpoling Centre part of his story without placing him there as a rescueable character.
A later recollection by the Emperor depicts the colony’s discovery and his capture but does not show the Tadpoling Centre itself. The absence is a continuity detail rather than evidence that the room did not exist during the colony’s earlier history.

Use this checklist if you want to see the location’s main content in one visit.
Final decision
---
Is the Tadpoling Centre the whole Mind Flayer Colony?
No. It is a subarea within the Mind Flayer Colony. The main pod chamber and adjoining brine-pool room belong to the Tadpoling Centre, while the rest of the colony contains separate rooms and the route towards Ketheric Thorm.
Can the pods be opened individually?
No. The main Neural Apparatus controls the pod group collectively. The party cannot rescue only Zevlor while leaving the mind flayers sealed.
What happens if I purge the pods?
Everyone still inside dies, including Zevlor, Gauntlet Yeva and Manip Shuurga. You lose the normal rescue conclusion to Find Zevlor and the possible Act Three ally outcome.
Does Mizora’s pod use the same control system?
No. Mizora’s pod has a separate panel with two illithid-symbol switches. The symbols require a DC 10 Arcana check to decipher, or the pod can be broken open with a DC 14 Strength check.
Can killing Mizora really kill Wyll?
Yes. Killing Mizora in the pod immediately kills Wyll, including in circumstances where Wyll is already dead.
Is the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen guaranteed?
The specimen is associated with the leftmost brine pool, but detecting it requires a DC 16 Perception check.
Can Zevlor become an Act Three ally?
Yes, if he is rescued, survives the encounter and the related quest state is completed. He can then contribute himself and a Hellrider squad to Gather Your Allies.
---
This guide treats the Tadpoling Centre as the named pod chamber plus the directly connected brine-pool room. The parent Mind Flayer Colony, its other rooms and its eastern moving-platform route are excluded from the location’s internal directory.
The available evidence is primarily from the community-maintained BG3 Wiki, with supporting information from its parent-location, quest, object and item pages. The wiki identifies the major contents and outcomes, but some exact combat behaviour, approval values, pathing details and patch-specific interactions may vary between game versions. The possibility of freed survivors turning hostile after incidental area damage is reported as a verification note rather than a universally guaranteed sequence.
