Key takeaways
- The Whispering Depths are a sub-area beneath the Blighted Village, not a synonym for the village or the wider Underdark.
- You can enter through the village well or through the Blacksmith’s Forge cellar by breaking a weak wall.
- The Dark Amethyst, required to unlock the Necromancy of Thay, lies near the Phase Spider Matriarch.
- The Spiderstep Boots are hidden in the western arachnomancer’s chamber and prevent web surfaces from restraining or slowing their wearer.
- Killing the Matriarch before any egg cluster hatches awards the Pest Control achievement.
- The central pit beneath the Matriarch’s arena is a route into the Underdark, but Feather Fall or an equivalent effect is required to survive the descent.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act One encounters, the Phase Spider Matriarch, the Dark Amethyst, the Necromancy of Thay, and the route into the Underdark.
Overview
The Whispering Depths is a compact but dangerous dungeon beneath the Blighted Village in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is not the Underdark itself, nor does it include the village’s cellars, the Apothecary’s Cellar, or the Blacksmith’s Forge. Those locations provide access to the Depths, but they remain separate areas.
The Depths consist of web-filled caves, narrow ledges, vertical drops and the Phase Spider Matriarch’s nesting chamber. They contain one of Act One’s most distinctive early boss fights, a key item for Unlock the Ancient Tome, the Spiderstep Boots, the remains of an arachnomancer’s experiments, and one of the four major entrances into the Underdark.
The area is easy to underestimate. Its main enemies are not especially numerous, but web surfaces can restrain characters, movement is restricted, bridges can be destroyed, and the Matriarch can rapidly reposition around the arena. The dungeon also rewards careful exploration rather than simply following the obvious path to the boss.

The last entry is included as a connection, not as part of the Whispering Depths proper.

Named locations within scope
Entrance from the village well
The most direct route begins at the overgrown well in the centre of the Blighted Village.
This places the party in the central part of the Depths. The well is around X: 24, Y: 401 on the Blighted Village map.
The well route is usually the clearest way to understand the dungeon because it places the party near the initial web-filled caves and gives access to both the western chamber and the Matriarch’s territory.
Entrance from the village well: steps
- 01Interact with the well.
- 02Choose the option to investigate it.
- 03Pass the Investigation check, reported as DC 10.
- 04Climb down the rope ladder.
Entrance through the Blacksmith’s Forge
The second access route starts in the cellar beneath the village blacksmith’s workshop. This is also the area associated with Finish the Masterwork Weapon, but the forge and its cellar are separate locations from the Whispering Depths.
A weak wall in the cellar can be destroyed with suitable force damage. The relevant wall sections are listed near:
One wall requires a Perception check to notice, while another can be reached by climbing onto a cavernous shelf.
This entrance is useful if the party has already explored the forge while working on the masterwork weapon. It can also provide a less obvious way to enter the Depths without using the village well.
Route into the Underdark
The lower route begins in the Matriarch’s chamber. A green-glowing pit opens into the Underdark.
Without Feather Fall or a comparable effect, the game treats the jump as fatal. The landing point is approximately X: 140, Y: -150 in the Underdark.
This is one of four possible routes into the Underdark. Taking it does not lock the party out of the other entrances, but it places them near dangerous Underdark terrain rather than at a safe settlement.
---
The Depths are built vertically. Some areas are linked by natural stone shelves, while others are separated by thick webs stretched across gaps. The layout therefore rewards characters who can move vertically, avoid difficult terrain or use ranged attacks.
Web surfaces
Web-covered ground is difficult terrain. Characters moving across it can be affected by Enwebbed, which prevents movement until they pass a subsequent saving throw. The relevant web hazards use Dexterity saving throws, listed as DC 12 by the area’s documentation.
Webs also act as an alarm system. Disturbing them produces a visible disturbance that can draw nearby spiders towards the party. Hanging web bridges can be destroyed with fire, which is useful for dropping enemies but dangerous if a party member is standing on the bridge.
Vertical combat
The dungeon’s drops are not merely decorative. The Matriarch can teleport between platforms, and destroying a bridge beneath her can cause substantial fall damage. The stone platforms around the nest can usually be reached by jumping or climbing even after some bridges are destroyed.
Characters with high Strength, Misty Step, enhanced jumping or Feather Fall have more options than characters relying entirely on ordinary movement.
Waypoint
Activating it before attempting the boss is advisable. It allows the party to leave, restock and return without repeating the village route.
---
The Whispering Depths has no ordinary settlement, shopkeepers, guards or resident faction. Its only meaningful named presence is indirect.
The area contains one fast-travel waypoint
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Whispering Depths, approximately X | -584, Y: -384 |
Eliette
Eliette was a high elf arachnomancer and devotee of Lolth. She is not present as a living NPC. Her history is reconstructed from journals scattered through the western chamber.
The text strongly implies that Eliette became the Phase Spider Matriarch. The Matriarch’s dialogue and the journal material support this interpretation, although the game presents it through environmental storytelling rather than a conventional character reveal.
Verified named directory
Factions
The spiders are hostile creatures rather than a social faction with dialogue, vendors or quest diplomacy.
---
The western tunnel leads to a small workshop once used by Eliette. It contains her notes, a writing area and a heavy chest holding the Spiderstep Boots. The chamber is one of the most important optional detours in the dungeon because it explains the Matriarch’s origin and provides a useful exploration item.
Journals and literature
Reading all four grants the A Solitary Spider inspiration event to characters with the Sage background. The inspiration is awarded for completing the set rather than for reading them in a particular order.
The chamber also contains other written material associated with the wider dungeon, including the Ritual Diagram. The exact placement of minor books can be easy to overlook among the webs and scattered containers.
Spiderstep Boots
The Spiderstep Boots are located in a heavy chest beside the writing desk, around X: -514, Y: -411.
Their effect is unusually well suited to this dungeon:
They are especially useful for a rogue, ranger or other character sent ahead to disable egg clusters or scout bridge routes.
---
Phase Spiders
Phase Spiders form the main threat in the central and northern caves. Their ability to teleport makes them difficult to pin down, and they react quickly when the party disturbs webbing.
A ranged character standing on a secure ledge can often force them to waste movement teleporting between platforms. Avoid bunching the party, since poison attacks and movement across webs can punish a tightly packed formation.
Ettercaps
Ettercaps occupy part of the northern cave section alongside Phase Spiders. They reinforce the dungeon’s web theme and can make the initial exploration more dangerous by immobilising characters before the larger spider encounters begin.
Phase Spiderlings
Spiderlings are conditional enemies associated primarily with the Matriarch’s egg clusters. If the eggs hatch, the resulting spiderlings can overwhelm a low-level party through numbers, particularly if several clusters are activated in sequence.
Phase Spider Matriarch
The Phase Spider Matriarch is the area boss. She is heavily resistant to the dungeon’s poison theme and uses teleportation to reposition around the arena. At half health, she can enter an enraged state through Spider Queen’s Wrath. Her main combat tools include:
The encounter can include up to three groups of spider eggs and multiple Phase Spiderlings. The Matriarch normally tries to hatch eggs early in the fight, so dealing with the nests is often more important than immediately attacking her.
---
Preparation
Poison resistance is particularly valuable because much of the encounter’s damage is poison-based. The Matriarch herself is immune to poison, so poison damage is a poor primary strategy against her.
Recommended approach
The three groups contain six, six and five eggs, for a maximum of seventeen spiderlings according to the encounter data. Destroying the eggs before combat is the most reliable way to prevent the arena from becoming crowded.
Recommended approach: steps
- 01Enter stealth before approaching the egg platforms.
- 02Destroy the two more distant egg clusters while remaining hidden.
- 03Attack the final cluster when the party is ready to begin combat.
- 04Start combat from separated positions rather than placing everyone on one web bridge.
- 05Use fire to destroy bridges if the Matriarch is standing on one.
- 06Prioritise newly hatched spiderlings if several are active.
- 07Use ranged attacks and high ground while forcing the Matriarch to teleport.
- 08Loot the Matriarch after the fight.
Pest Control achievement
The Pest Control achievement requires killing the Phase Spider Matriarch before any of her eggs hatch.
The final cluster is closer to the adult spiders and is more likely to trigger combat. That is acceptable, provided the earlier clusters have already been removed.
The safest procedure is
- 01Sneak to the two platforms furthest from the Matriarch.
- 02Destroy both egg clusters without starting combat.
- 03Approach the final cluster.
- 04Destroy it in one attack if possible.
- 05Begin the boss fight with no eggs remaining.
- 06Kill the Matriarch.
Using the chasm
The arena contains side holes labelled as chasms and a central hole leading to the Underdark. Knocking the Matriarch into a side chasm can kill her and award experience, but the result differs from pushing her into the central Underdark pit.
If she falls into the central pit, her corpse can appear in the Underdark, around X: 140, Y: 151, where it may still be possible to loot it. On Tactician and Honour mode, the Matriarch cannot be freely removed from the encounter by pushing her into these drops because she can return to her original position.
Treat environmental kills as an optional tactic rather than the primary plan. They can alter the location of the loot and may not work consistently across difficulty modes.

Fixed or specifically located items
The Spider Silk Cocoons do not provide one fixed, universal item. Their contents are random, so they should be treated as supplementary loot rather than guaranteed collectibles.
Fixed or specifically located items
| Item | Location | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Dark Amethyst | Near the Matriarch’s den, around X: -565, Y: -355 | Unlocks the Necromancy of Thay |
| Spiderstep Boots | Heavy chest in the arachnomancer’s chamber, around X: -514, Y: -411 | Prevent Enwebbed and web movement penalties |
| Poisoner’s Robe | Looted from the Phase Spider Matriarch | Adds poison damage to poison damage spells, subject to its Intelligence condition |
| Spurred Band | On a skeleton with a backpack, around X: -495, Y: -365 | Grants Momentum when the wearer begins a turn at 50% hit points or less |
| Spider Silk Cocoon contents | Various cocoons throughout the dungeon | Random treasure-table loot |
Dark Amethyst
The Dark Amethyst lies near the Matriarch, below the web-covered sections of the nest. It is the key item for Unlock the Ancient Tome.
The amethyst is not permanently missable. If it is missed in Act One, another can be found later in Philgrave’s Mansion in Act Three, but returning to the Depths is the simpler solution.
To use it
- 01Find the Dark Amethyst in the Whispering Depths.
- 02Obtain the Necromancy of Thay from the Apothecary’s Cellar, which is outside this location.
- 03Interact with the tome while the amethyst is in the party’s inventory.
- 04Choose the option to place the amethyst into the book’s recess.
- 05Continue the book sequence or give the tome to an eligible companion.
Literature directory
Verified named reading material associated with the Whispering Depths includes:
The Apprentice’s Journal is found in an Apprentice’s Pack around X: -492, Y: -363. It connects the Necromancy of Thay to an apprentice of Ilyn Toth and helps point towards the Dark Amethyst.
---
Search the Cellar
This quest begins in the Blighted Village and is mainly associated with the Apothecary’s Cellar. The Whispering Depths connects to it because the dungeon contains the Dark Amethyst and related written evidence about the tome.
The Apothecary’s Cellar itself is not part of the Whispering Depths.
Unlock the Ancient Tome
The Depths therefore contain an essential quest item but not the entire quest chain.
Travel through the Underdark
The central pit provides one possible route into the Underdark. It is a progression route rather than a separate quest hub inside the Depths.
The party should be prepared for the Minotaur Hills landing area and the wider Underdark’s hostile environment. Do not jump simply because the pit is visible. Feather Fall is the meaningful requirement.
Reading Eliette’s journals
Reading the four Eliette journals is an optional environmental activity. It awards the Sage inspiration event A Solitary Spider and provides the dungeon’s clearest explanation of how the Matriarch came to exist.
---
For a thorough first visit, use this order:
This route separates lore collection from the boss fight and reduces the chance of overlooking the western chamber.
---
---
Reading Eliette’s journals: steps
- 01Enter through the well or Blacksmith’s Forge.
- 02Activate the Whispering Depths waypoint.
- 03Explore the first cave section and collect cocoon loot.
- 04Search for the Apprentice’s Pack and read the Apprentice’s Journal.
- 05Follow the western tunnel to the arachnomancer’s chamber.
- 06Collect the Spiderstep Boots.
- 07Read all four of Eliette’s journals.
- 08Return to the central caves and clear the Ettercaps and ordinary Phase Spiders.
- 09Scout the Matriarch’s chamber before starting combat.
- 10Destroy egg clusters if pursuing Pest Control.
- 11Defeat and loot the Matriarch.
- 12Collect the Dark Amethyst.
- 13Decide whether to use Feather Fall to enter the Underdark.
- 14If not continuing underground, use the waypoint to return to the surface.
Is the Whispering Depths the Underdark?
No. The Whispering Depths are an Act One dungeon beneath the Blighted Village. The Underdark is a much larger region reached through the central pit or through other entrances elsewhere in Act One.
Can I enter without using the well?
Yes. The Blacksmith’s Forge cellar has weak walls that can be destroyed to reach the Depths.
Do I need to kill the Matriarch to obtain the Dark Amethyst?
No. The amethyst lies near her den and can be collected by sneaking past the spiders. Killing her is useful for experience and loot, but it is not intrinsically required to pick up the amethyst.
Are the Spiderstep Boots required?
No, but they make the dungeon considerably easier. They prevent Enwebbed and remove the movement penalty from web surfaces.
Can the Matriarch be pushed into the Underdark?
The result depends on the hole and difficulty. A central-pit fall can move her corpse to the Underdark, while side-chasm kills behave differently. On Tactician and Honour mode, the encounter restricts this tactic by allowing her to return.
Is the Dark Amethyst permanently missable?
No. It has a later fallback location in Act Three, although obtaining it in the Whispering Depths is the intended Act One route.
Does the Whispering Depths contain any shops?
No shops or regular services are verified within the area. It is a hostile dungeon with loot containers, quest items, a waypoint and combat encounters.
---
The Whispering Depths is largely static across Act One. Its main progression-dependent differences concern:
Honour mode adds legendary-action behaviour to the Matriarch encounter, making egg destruction more important. The environment remains the same in broad structure, but encounter tactics and survivability change substantially.
The area’s story is built around transformation. Eliette begins as a surface elf fascinated by Lolth, turns to the Underdark and pursues a complete physical conversion into spider form. Her journals stop short of narrating the final moment directly, but the Matriarch’s identity is strongly implied by the written evidence and her association with Eliette’s transformation.
---
This guide treats the Whispering Depths as the named dungeon beneath the Blighted Village and excludes neighbouring cellars, the forge, the village surface and the Underdark. The game’s map and community documentation use some informal descriptions for small chambers and landing areas, so names such as Arachnomancer’s chamber and Minotaur Hills are functional descriptive labels rather than always being formal in-game map names.
The area’s random Spider Silk Cocoon contents are not listed individually because they are generated from a treasure table rather than being a fixed set of named placements. A complete item-by-item inventory would therefore require recording every possible random result separately from the fixed loot.
