Note

Base game guide. This article covers the Blighted Village proper and its verified attached subareas: the Apothecary’s Cellar, the Blacksmith’s Forge, the Windmill Cellar and the Whispering Depths beneath the settlement. It does not fold the surrounding Forest, Goblin Camp, Risen Road, Sunlit Wetlands, Owlbear Nest or other nearby locations into the village itself.

Overview

The Blighted Village is one of the Wilderness’s most rewarding early-game locations in Baldur’s Gate 3. At first glance, it is a ruined settlement occupied by goblins, but its abandoned buildings conceal several major Act One discoveries: the Necromancy of Thay, the Dark Amethyst, the Sussur weapon quest, the Phase Spider Matriarch, the rescue of Barcus Wroot and an optional encounter with Lump the Enlightened and his ogre companions.

The settlement is also called Moonhaven, its former name. Goblin dialogue refers to it as Bogrot, while the location is presented in-game as the Blighted Village. Moonhaven was once associated with Selûnite worship, and its remains contain evidence of the village’s religious and political history. The location sits within the larger Wilderness region, roughly between the Emerald Grove and Goblin Camp. From its surrounding routes, the party can reach the Goblin Camp, Risen Road, Sunlit Wetlands and, through the Whispering Depths, the Underdark.

---

The village is laid out as a damaged settlement with several broad approaches rather than a single gated entrance. The party can arrive from the direction of the Emerald Grove, approach from the south or east, or enter from the western side. Goblin guards are positioned around the settlement and may begin an encounter when the party approaches openly.

A passive Perception check can reveal an impending ambush. The eastern approach is watched from the blacksmith and apothecary roofs, while goblins also patrol or stand guard near the western and southern approaches. Depending on previous choices, the party may be able to pass through dialogue rather than fight.

Main routes

Emerald Grove route

The road from the Emerald Grove crosses a stone bridge and enters the Forest before reaching the village. The area around the bridge is separate from the village. If Aradin and the surviving members of his adventuring group have left the Grove, they may be found near corpses in this wider Forest area. This can provide another opportunity to begin or advance the Nightsong-related storyline if it has not already been started.

Northern route to the Risen Road

North of the village is a broken bridge leading towards the Risen Road. The bridge itself is not a conventional walkable connection, so the party must use a jump or another suitable movement method. A dig site can be found just outside the northern entrance in the Forest.

Western and north-western routes

The windmill occupies the northern side of the settlement. Beyond the village, paths lead towards the Goblin Camp. The village is therefore a useful staging point before dealing with the goblin leadership, although visiting the village does not require the party to commit to a particular side in the Grove conflict.

Southern route

The southern side contains the ruined apothecary and one of the guarded approaches. The apothecary’s cellar provides a substantial underground route and should not be overlooked merely because the upper building appears abandoned.

---

The village has no surviving permanent civil population during the party’s visit. Most humanoids encountered there are temporary occupants, scavengers, goblin guards or creatures using the ruins.

Residents and story-associated characters

Some goblins are encounter-specific and may move between nearby parts of the village. They should be treated as visitors or occupying forces rather than former villagers.

Factions

Goblins and the Absolute

Fezzerk’s group and the guards around the settlement are connected to the goblin presence in the region. At the schoolhouse, Lump explains that he and his ogres have an arrangement with the goblins: they check strangers for the Brand of the Absolute and kill or eat those who do not satisfy them. This can be resolved by fighting, persuading the ogres to leave or negotiating a temporary arrangement with Lump.

Former Selûnites

Moonhaven was associated with Selûne. The abandoned settlement contains a Selûnite necklace, a small defiled shrine and written evidence of its former religious identity. The village’s history is not delivered through one complete exposition, so players should read the documents found in the smithy, cellar and surrounding ruins.

Sharran attackers

The available evidence suggests that the village was destroyed by Sharran raiders connected to Ketheric Thorm. This is a historical interpretation recovered through exploration and documents, rather than a current faction occupying the village.

Village Centre and Well

The village centre contains the Blighted Village Waypoint, scattered crates and the overgrown well. The well requires a DC 10 Investigation check to recognise as an entrance into the tunnels below. Entering it leads to the Whispering Depths.

Near the apothecary is a Moss-Covered Chest. Its key is carried by a Goblin Booyahg on the apothecary roof. The chest contains gold and the Haste Helm.

Apothecary

The ruined apothecary stands near the southern entrance. It contains alchemical ingredients, potions and a ledger that starts Search the Cellar. The ledger says that valuable ingredients were moved downstairs. The hatch is partly obscured by a broken cupboard behind the counter.

The building also contains an old cauldron. A Medicine check reveals that it was used for more than ordinary medical preparation and had been involved in brewing powerful potions.

Blacksmith’s House and Forge

The blacksmith’s building is north-west of the eastern entrance. Its upper or open ground-floor rooms contain books, documents and a Selûnite Necklace. An Old Key can be found on a crate near the calcified web covering a breach in the floor.

The key opens the shabby doors to the forge below, although the party can also enter by destroying the web and dropping through the hole. The forge is the main village location for Finish the Masterwork Weapon and also provides another route into the Whispering Depths.

Practical advice

The completed weapon depends on the ordinary weapon placed into the forge. The three intended categories are greatsword, dagger and sickle.

Schoolhouse

The ruined schoolhouse stands in the south-west of the village. Details of its former use remain visible, including hopscotch markings, height marks and a missing-children poster.

Inside, Lump the Enlightened, Chock and Fank are feasting on a dead tiefling. The party can fight the ogres, persuade them to leave or negotiate with Lump. If a bargain is made, Lump may provide Lump’s War Horn, which can summon the ogres in a later battle, subject to its conditions and limitations.

A hidden chest behind the schoolhouse requires a DC 15 Survival check to locate. The schoolhouse also contains a Smokepowder Barrel, a Smokepowder Satchel and, depending on edition ownership, a Digital Deluxe portrait item.

Windmill

The windmill is the main landmark on the northern side of the village. Fezzerk and his goblins have tied Barcus Wroot to one of its vanes. Approaching normally begins the Rescue the Gnome quest and usually opens a dialogue encounter. Approaching through a wall breach can instead make the group hostile immediately.

The Brake lever stops the windmill. The Release Brake lever speeds it up. Using the release lever before safely freeing Barcus kills him by launching him away from the windmill. If Barcus survives, he can be recruited into a chain of later story events involving Wulbren, the Grymforge gnomes and the Ironhands.

Windmill loot

The rescue can also grant the Folk Hero inspiration The Most Unfortunate Gnome.

The party can

  1. 01
    Fight Fezzerk’s group.
  2. 02
Persuade or intimidate them into leaving.
  3. 03
Use stealth or an alternative approach.
  4. 04
Enter the windmill after the goblins have been dealt with.
  5. 05
    Operate the interior levers.

Selûnite shrine

Behind the windmill is a small defiled Selûnite shrine. Shadowheart can have a unique interaction here if the relevant earlier faith-revealing interaction has not already occurred. This is a progression-sensitive scene, so it may not appear in every playthrough.

Apothecary’s Cellar

The Apothecary’s Cellar begins behind the hatch in the apothecary. Its first chamber contains healing items, alchemical ingredients, a Healer’s Log and a Potion of Healing Recipe.

A lever hidden behind crates opens a passage concealed behind a bookcase. The passage leads to a cavernous antechamber containing mouldering caskets and the entrance to the necromancer’s laboratory. The lever can be discovered with a passive DC 15 Perception check, but careful manual searching can also reveal it.

Casket chamber

Opening or disturbing the caskets summons undead guardians. One casket contains the Scroll of Summon Quasit, which can be used to summon Shovel. Wizards can transcribe the scroll, but it does not appear through the ordinary spell-learning menu and must be handled through the inventory.

The guardians can break open additional caskets, creating a larger encounter. If the party destroys the caskets and guardians efficiently, it can prevent some reinforcements from appearing. The room also contains a Dark Journal, which provides information about the laboratory’s former owner and helps with the mirror puzzle.

Ornate Mirror

The Ornate Mirror guards the passage into the Necromancer’s Lab. The party can answer its questions using information discovered in the Dark Journal and elsewhere in the cellar. Success grants the Charlatan inspiration Mirror Master. Failure causes the mirror to send a flaming sphere through the chamber. The sphere damages objects and characters in its path, but loses power after several passes.

Necromancer’s Lab

The laboratory belongs to Ilyn Toth, a Red Wizard. It contains alchemical materials, documents, a Scroll of Feather Fall, Basilisk Oil, the Bracers of Defence and various books.

The most important room is the trapped chamber containing the Necromancy of Thay. The gate can be opened with the Rusted Key found in the laboratory, lockpicked or bypassed with suitable magic. The room contains a pressure plate and gargoyle traps. The book can be taken safely by:

Taking the tome starts the next stage of Search the Cellar. The book can be destroyed with radiant damage, which summons three hostile Shadows, or retained for later use.

Whispering Depths

The Whispering Depths are a separate underground location beneath the Blighted Village. They can be reached from:

The caves are filled with webs, spider eggs and hostile spiders. The Phase Spider Matriarch guards the Dark Amethyst, which is required to read the Necromancy of Thay. The area also offers a deep route towards the Underdark.

Windmill Cellar

The Windmill Cellar is a small attached area beneath the northern windmill. Its primary purpose is to hold Barcus’s belongings and supplies after the rescue. The entrance is accessed through a wooden hatch inside or near the windmill structure.

The Windmill Cellar should not be confused with the Act Three Abandoned Windmill in Rivington, which is a different location with a different encounter and story context.

Search the Cellar

To unlock the book, the party needs the Dark Amethyst from the Whispering Depths. Turning at least one page can grant the reader Speak with Dead. Turning three pages grants the Forbidden Knowledge passive, although later choices and later-game events can affect the result.

Search the Cellar: steps

  1. 01
    Enter the ruined apothecary.
  2. 02
    Read the Apothecary’s Ledger.
  3. 03
    Descend through the concealed hatch.
  4. 04
Find the lever behind the crates.
  5. 05
    Enter the casket chamber.
  6. 06
    Read the Dark Journal.
  7. 07
Convince or bypass the Ornate Mirror.
  8. 08
    Enter the Necromancer’s Lab.
  9. 09
    Take the Necromancy of Thay.
  10. 10
Choose whether to destroy the book or pursue its secrets.

Finish the Masterwork Weapon

This activity takes place in the Blacksmith’s Forge. The party must find the forge, obtain Sussur Bark in the Underdark and combine it with a suitable mundane weapon. The result is a Sussur greatsword, dagger or sickle, depending on the chosen base weapon.

Rescue the Gnome

Do not use Release Brake while Barcus is still attached. His survival has significant consequences for later gnome-related quests.

At the windmill

  1. 01
Approach from the normal village route if you want the dialogue encounter.
  2. 02
Resolve Fezzerk’s group through combat or conversation.
  3. 03
    Enter the windmill.
  4. 04
    Use the Brake lever.
  5. 05
    Free Barcus from the vane.
  6. 06
Search the cellar and collect his belongings.

Deal with Lump the Enlightened

The ogres are valuable as an optional combat resource, but using them carelessly can create complications because their horn is not a permanent, unconditional summon.

Fixed or named items

The exact contents of ordinary containers can include random valuables, food, alchemical ingredients, ammunition, scrolls or minor gold. Treat these as container-dependent rather than guaranteed named rewards.

Fixed or named items

Named books and documents

---

This order keeps the village’s surface encounters, the book quest and the spider route connected without requiring the party to backtrack repeatedly.

The village’s former name, Moonhaven, points to its Selûnite identity. The surviving necklace, shrine and village records present it as a settlement connected to the Moonmaiden rather than an anonymous farming hamlet. The ruins also preserve traces of tension with outside powers. Hellriders from Elturgard visited at some point, and the former inhabitants appear to have feared threats to their independence.

By the time the party arrives, the settlement has been abandoned and stripped. The goblins are not rebuilding it. They are using the ruins as a checkpoint, ambush site and temporary base. The village’s destruction is tied to the wider history of Ketheric Thorm and Sharran violence, making the location an early example of how Act One’s apparently disconnected ruins feed into the larger story.

The name Moonhaven is therefore more than flavour text. It identifies the settlement’s former identity, while Bogrot represents the goblins’ dismissive renaming of a place whose original inhabitants have been gone for generations.

For a thorough but efficient first visit

  1. 01
Approach the village and resolve the entrance guards. Use dialogue if you want to preserve resources, or exploit the rooftops and terrain if combat begins.
  2. 02
Activate the Waypoint in the central area.
  3. 03
Visit the apothecary first. Read the ledger and collect healing and alchemical supplies.
  4. 04
Search the central well, but postpone the deepest spider fight if the party is under-levelled.
  5. 05
Explore the blacksmith’s house. Take the Old Key, inspect the documents and open the forge.
  6. 06
Check the schoolhouse. Resolve the ogres and search behind the building for the hidden chest.
  7. 07
Go to the windmill. Save Barcus with the Brake lever, then collect his belongings from the cellar.
  8. 08
Visit the Selûnite shrine with Shadowheart if you want to see her conditional interaction.
  9. 09
Complete the Apothecary’s Cellar. Read the journal, pass the mirror and secure the Necromancy of Thay.
  10. 10
Return to the Whispering Depths. Defeat the Phase Spider Matriarch, retrieve the Dark Amethyst and investigate the descent towards the Underdark.
  11. 11
Return later with Sussur Bark to complete the Masterwork weapon.

Is the Whispering Depths part of the Blighted Village?

It is a separate named location beneath the village, but it is one of the village’s principal attached subareas. Its entrances are all reached from the Blighted Village or its buildings, and it contains the Dark Amethyst needed for the village’s Necromancy of Thay storyline.

Should I enter the well?

Yes, provided the party is prepared for spider combat. The well is one of the easiest ways to reach the Whispering Depths and eventually the Dark Amethyst. You can also reach the caves through the Blacksmith’s Forge.

Can I save Barcus without fighting Fezzerk?

Yes. Dialogue can resolve the encounter, depending on your character’s skills, choices and approach. If the group becomes hostile, Barcus can still be rescued after the fight.

What happens if I use the Release Brake lever?

If Barcus is still tied to the windmill vane, the lever sends him flying and kills him. Use the Brake lever first.

Where is the Necromancy of Thay?

It is in the trapped Necromancer’s Lab beneath the Apothecary’s Cellar. The cellar begins in the ruined apothecary through the concealed hatch behind the counter.

Where is the Dark Amethyst?

It is in the Whispering Depths, in the Phase Spider Matriarch’s territory. You need it to unlock the Necromancy of Thay.

Is the Blighted Village the same as the village in other Baldur’s Gate games?

No. This guide concerns the Act One location in Baldur’s Gate 3. The names Moonhaven and Bogrot belong to this game’s location history and should not be treated as alternate versions of a city district from the earlier Baldur’s Gate titles.
