Key takeaways
- The Defiled Temple is a subarea of the Shattered Sanctum, not a synonym for the entire Goblin Camp or its interior.
- Its main sections are Gut’s bedroom, Gut’s private prison cell, the connecting hallways, and the Moon Tile puzzle room.
- The temple’s principal progression reward is access to the Selûnite Outpost, an entrance to the Underdark.
- You can enter from the Shattered Sanctum through a locked door, from the spider pit through Gut’s prison cell, or through a small opening in the Zhentarim storeroom.
- The Moon Tile puzzle can be solved normally, or bypassed by discovering and unlocking a hidden lever.
- The temple contains an Amulet of Misty Step, Selûnite writings, random scrolls and consumables, and several conditional encounters.
About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act One routes through the Goblin Camp and Shattered Sanctum, Priestess Gut’s chambers, the Moon Tile puzzle, the Underdark entrance, and conditional encounters involving Gut and Korrilla.
Overview
The Defiled Temple is a compact but important location in Baldur’s Gate 3, found inside the Shattered Sanctum at the Goblin Camp. It is not the whole of the Shattered Sanctum, nor is it the same place as the Selûnite Outpost in the Underdark. The Defiled Temple is the ruined Selûnite temple section that the goblins have appropriated as Priestess Gut’s private chambers, together with the adjoining Moon Tile puzzle room and the route down to the Underdark.
Its greatest importance is practical rather than geographic. The temple contains one of the early entrances to the Underdark, provides useful information about Selûnite history and the Moon Tile mechanism, and can be reached through several routes depending on whether the party is infiltrating, fighting, or exploring beneath the Goblin Camp.
Location and boundaries
The Defiled Temple occupies a secluded, ruined part of the former Temple of Selûne beneath the Shattered Sanctum. The goblins use it as Priestess Gut’s private area, while the deeper temple passage retains its old Selûnite mechanisms and connection to the Underdark. It should therefore be treated as a distinct interior location within the Shattered Sanctum rather than as a general name for the Goblin Camp’s underground spaces.
The Selûnite Outpost is a neighbouring destination, not a subarea of the temple. Likewise, the wider Shattered Sanctum, the Goblin Camp exterior, the Zhentarim storeroom and the spider pit are connected areas, but should not be merged into the Defiled Temple directory.
Neighbouring but separate areas
---
The principal boundary markers are
- 01The locked entrance from Gut’s private chapel in the Shattered Sanctum.
- 02Gut’s bedroom and personal chamber, guarded by Polma.
- 03The private prison cell beneath the floor, connected to the spider pit by a cave route.
- 04The Moon Tile puzzle room, further north-east in the temple.
- 05The sealed descent to the Selûnite Outpost, which is in the Underdark and is therefore outside the Defiled Temple itself.

Access and routes
The temple has three documented access routes. Which route is most convenient depends on the party’s relationship with Priestess Gut, the state of the Goblin Camp, and whether the party has already explored the spider pit.
Route 1: Through Gut’s private chapel
The most direct route begins in the Shattered Sanctum. A locked door in Gut’s private chapel leads into the Defiled Temple. The door can be opened by:
This is normally the simplest route if Gut has been killed, if the party has obtained her key, or if the group is comfortable entering the area covertly.
Route 2: Through the spider pit
A cave passage in the spider pit leads to Gut’s private prison cell. The route is obstructed by a Cracked Floor in the cell. It must be broken from inside, and the vertical layout can make the route awkward. The wiki notes that entering through this path may require spatial movement such as Misty Step, because of the change in map level.
This route is useful for parties that have entered the spider pit from the Goblin Camp’s well or have already dealt with the spiders. It can also provide an alternative approach when the main Shattered Sanctum route is inconvenient.
Route 3: Through the Zhentarim storeroom
A small hole in the Zhentarim storeroom provides another connection to the temple. This is a less obvious route and is easy to miss if the party only follows the main corridors of the Shattered Sanctum.
Practical access advice
If you are pursuing Gut’s apparent cure offer, be cautious about allowing the scene to progress without preparing your party. The temple contains a prison-cell route and vertical gaps that can matter during an escape or combat. A party that has already explored the spider pit, dealt with the goblin leadership, or secured movement spells will have more options.

Gut’s bedroom and personal chamber
Gut’s room is the western or southern approach to the temple, depending on the route taken. It contains her bedroom, a personal altar, storage furniture and a guarded route deeper into the temple. The ogre Polma protects the area.
If Gut has knocked out the player character during the cure-related sequence, she may be found here praying at her altar. The precise state of the room depends on how the party approached the encounter and whether the rest of the group has already dealt with the spiders or created another escape opportunity. In some circumstances, Korrilla can appear; in others, she does not.
A wooden ladder allows the party to move through the room and attempt to sneak past Polma and, conditionally, Gut. This makes stealth, invisibility, split-party movement and careful positioning useful alternatives to an immediate fight.
Gut’s private prison cell
The cell lies beneath part of Gut’s room and can be reached from the spider-pit side of the map. It is both a possible entry route and a dangerous vertical space. The Cracked Floor must be broken from inside if the party is trying to come up from the spider pit.
The cell contains modest but useful loot, including a Scroll of Hold Person and a bottle of Basic Poison. The area may also become relevant during the cure sequence or an escape from Gut’s chambers.
Moon Tile puzzle room
The north-eastern portion of the temple contains four movable stone discs. Together they depict Selûnite moon phases. The room is the temple’s main progression puzzle and controls the sealed route to the Underdark.
The intended solution places the new-moon symbols, shown as black circles, on the illuminated southern disc. The party can obtain clues from the Selûnite Journal in Gut’s room or from the Dwarf’s Poem, which can be obtained from Klagga in the outer Goblin Camp. A successful DC 15 Investigation check can also provide information during the party’s examination of the puzzle.
The puzzle does not impose a move limit. One verified seven-move sequence is:
This sequence is given in directional form by the location guide. Other seven-move solutions also exist, so players do not need to reproduce exactly one arrangement if they understand the goal.
Another commonly reported description of the same puzzle is to place the dark or new-moon symbols on the illuminated disc at the bottom of the arrangement. The important point is the final pattern rather than the exact sequence used to reach it.
Bypassing the puzzle
A hidden lever near the north-eastern side of the puzzle room can bypass the discs. It requires:
The lever opens the same route without solving the puzzle. However, using the bypass does not provide the puzzle-related Sage inspiration immediately. The inspiration can still be granted if the puzzle is solved afterwards.

Characters and residents
The Defiled Temple has a small named cast, but their presence is highly dependent on player choices and progression.
Priestess Gut
Priestess Gut is the goblin priestess associated with the Absolute and the principal occupant of the temple. She may be encountered in the Shattered Sanctum before the party enters her private chambers, or in the temple itself if the party follows her cure-related dialogue.
Her location and whether she remains alive are progression-dependent. She should not be treated as a permanently present resident in every playthrough.
Polma
Polma is an ogre guarding Gut’s chambers. She is the temple’s main fixed guard encounter and may be bypassed through stealth, positioning or other forms of infiltration. If combat begins, the tight rooms and vertical transitions make the surrounding furniture, ladders and floor breaks relevant to positioning.
Korrilla
Korrilla is a conditional visitor rather than a normal resident of the temple. She may appear depending on the way the party handles Gut and the surrounding escape sequence. The location guide specifically notes circumstances in which Korrilla does not appear, particularly if the spiders have already been dealt with or persuaded to attack the goblins.
Character directory
No functional merchant or permanent service provider is documented within the Defiled Temple itself. The area is a quest, exploration and transition space rather than a shopping location.

Items and collectibles
The temple’s most notable fixed reward is the Amulet of Misty Step, found in a gilded chest near Gut’s bedroom. This is particularly valuable early in the game because Misty Step provides reliable short-range teleportation, which is useful for vertical exploration, escape routes and tactical repositioning.
The room also contains several pieces of information and consumable loot. Some items are fixed, while others are randomised.
A pouch containing valuables can be discovered near the altar with a DC 13 Perception check. The skeleton on the crumbled stone perch is reached by jumping down from the deeper section of Gut’s room. It can contain gold, random valuables and/or potions rather than one guaranteed named reward.
Collectibles directory
The Dwarf’s Poem is relevant to the temple’s puzzle but is not located inside the Defiled Temple. It can be obtained from Klagga in the outer Goblin Camp and should therefore be listed as an external clue rather than a temple collectible.

Recommended exploration order
- 01Prepare before entering Gut’s chambers. Keep the party together if you expect combat, or deliberately separate a stealth character if you intend to scout. Bring thieves’ tools, healing and at least one method of vertical movement if you plan to use the spider-pit route.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Enter through the Shattered Sanctum door, if available. Lockpick the door, use Priestess Gut’s key, or enter after dealing with Gut.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Search Gut’s bedroom carefully. Loot the gilded chest for the Amulet of Misty Step, read the Selûnite Journal, and search the nearby furniture. Look for the Perception check near the altar and inspect the Rosewood Desk cabinet.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Decide how to handle Polma. Sneak past her using the ladder and surrounding layout, or start combat on your terms. If Gut is present, her position and the party’s earlier choices can alter the scene.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Check the prison cell. Collect the Scroll of Hold Person and Basic Poison. If approaching from the spider pit, break the Cracked Floor from inside and account for the height difference.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Reach the Moon Tile room. Follow the corridor beyond Gut’s chambers. Read the journal or use the Dwarf’s Poem as a clue if you want to solve the puzzle without an external solution.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Solve or bypass the mechanism. Solve the discs by moving the new-moon symbols onto the illuminated southern disc, or reveal the hidden lever with Perception and unlock it with Sleight of Hand.
Recommended exploration order
- 01Take the descent to the Underdark. Once the door opens, follow the long descent. It leads to the Selûnite Outpost, which begins the party’s transition into the Underdark.
Best route for different playstyles
| Playstyle | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| Diplomatic or deceptive | Follow Gut’s dialogue, then use her chambers and search for the journal and key |
| Stealth-focused | Lockpick the chapel door, sneak past Polma and avoid unnecessary combat |
| Combat-focused | Deal with Gut and Polma before thoroughly searching the room |
| Exploration-focused | Enter through the spider pit or Zhentarim storeroom, then inspect both approaches |
| Puzzle-focused | Read the Selûnite Journal or obtain the Dwarf’s Poem before touching the discs |
| Fast Underdark access | Use the hidden lever if the Perception and Sleight of Hand checks succeed |
Quests and progression
The Defiled Temple is linked to several Act One objectives:
Solving the Moon Tile puzzle updates Find the Nightsong and opens the route to the Underdark. The location therefore acts as a bridge between the Goblin Camp storyline and the wider Act One progression involving the Underdark, Grymforge and the route towards Moonrise Towers.
For characters with the Sage background, solving the puzzle can grant the inspiration The Phases Unfold. The documented location guide notes that this inspiration is not awarded simply by using the lever, although solving the puzzle later can still grant it.

Quests and progression
Hazards and tactical considerations
Polma and Gut’s chamber
The main danger is not a large battle map but the confined layout. Characters can be separated by the ladder, furniture and changes in elevation. If the party triggers combat while spread through the room, isolated characters may be exposed.
Breakable floor and vertical movement
The Cracked Floor in the prison cell is both an environmental obstacle and part of the alternate route. Falling or crossing between levels can cause damage or leave characters in awkward positions. Movement spells such as Misty Step are especially useful here.
Conditional escape scene
If the player character is knocked out by Gut, the resulting sequence can place the character in a vulnerable position inside the temple. The presence or absence of other characters, including Korrilla, depends on what the rest of the party has already done.
Puzzle-room bypass
The lever is not simply an obvious second entrance. It must first be detected with Perception and then unlocked. A failed check can make the normal disc solution the more reliable route.

Lore and atmosphere
The Defiled Temple shows the physical and ideological replacement of one faith by another. The building was once a Temple of Selûne, with moon imagery and a carefully engineered mechanism guarding its descent into the Underdark. The goblins now use the same sacred structure as a private chamber for a priestess of the Absolute.
The Selûnite Journal explains the logic behind the Moon Tile mechanism and preserves the temple’s original purpose. The puzzle’s arrangement is not arbitrary: the full moons and darkness are positioned according to a Selûnite design intended to keep the Underdark passage sealed. The contrast between the journal, the old architecture and Gut’s occupation of the chamber gives the area much of its narrative identity.
The location also introduces the player to a recurring Act One theme: old religious sites are not merely abandoned ruins. They remain active pieces of the region’s history, with their entrances, rituals and protective mechanisms still shaping present-day travel.
