About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers Act Three locations, the Lower City Graveyard, the mausoleum’s connections to nearby tombs, and the identity and remains of the person buried inside.
Overview
Gorion Mausoleum is a small underground tomb in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate, visited during Act Three of Baldur’s Gate 3. It lies beneath the Lower City Graveyard, close to the graveyard’s enormous weeping willow. The mausoleum is not a major quest dungeon and contains no resident merchant, boss or mandatory encounter. Its importance comes from three things: the name and identity of the person buried there, its position as a hidden junction between neighbouring family tombs, and a compact collection of notes and loot.
The tomb is easy to overlook because the entrance is a locked gate in the wider graveyard rather than a separate map transition in the city. Once inside, however, the room provides routes into both Durinbold Mausoleum and Hhune Mausoleum, making it part of the Lower City Graveyard’s broader network of connected burial places.
Location and boundaries
Gorion Mausoleum should be treated as a small interior subarea within the Lower City Graveyard. The graveyard itself is a much larger location stretching across the northern part of the Lower City, between the Devil’s Fee and Candulhallow’s Tombstones. It contains the Mortuary, numerous ordinary graves, several named visitors and four underground mausoleums. Gorion Mausoleum is only one of those four tombs.
The four named mausoleums in the graveyard are:
The Grand Mausoleum is separate from the other three and should not be confused with Gorion Mausoleum. It is a different Act Three graveyard location, although all four are found within the same wider cemetery area.
Included subareas
Gorion Mausoleum is small enough that it does not have named internal rooms in the game’s location hierarchy. Its functional parts are:
The adjacent tombs are connected locations, not subdivisions of Gorion Mausoleum. Their enemies, traps, puzzles and loot should therefore be counted as belonging to Durinbold Mausoleum or Hhune Mausoleum rather than to Gorion’s tomb.
Location and boundaries
Access and routes
Reaching the entrance
Enter the Lower City Graveyard and move towards the large weeping willow in the centre of the cemetery. The entrance to Gorion Mausoleum is beneath the tree, near the centre of the graveyard at approximately X: 10, Y: 33.
The graveyard has three open approaches, so the exact route depends on where you enter:
The most direct route is usually to enter through the southern or central part of the cemetery and follow the paths towards the willow tree.
Opening the gate
The gate is locked, but there are two straightforward solutions:
The lock can be picked without being treated as a crime. The key is not hidden in another dungeon or carried by a named NPC. It is on the ground in a tuft of grass in the corner immediately to the left of the mausoleum entrance.
Suggested exploration route
This route keeps the mausoleum’s contents separate from the wider graveyard’s optional encounters.
---
Reaching the entrance
- 01From the western side, near the Devil’s Fee.
- 02From the southern entrance.
- 03From the eastern side, near Candulhallow’s Tombstones.
Suggested exploration route: For a clean Lower City Graveyard sweep
- 01Enter the graveyard and locate the Mortuary.
- 02Speak with the relevant graveyard visitors before disturbing graves, especially if you are progressing the murder investigation or Nina Dortmell’s scene.
- 03Search the grass to the left of Gorion Mausoleum’s gate.
- 04Use the key or pick the lock.
- 05Search the central room and read the notes on the stone surfaces.
- 06Inspect and open the sarcophagus.
- 07Examine the eastern hole and western crumbling wall.
- 08Decide whether to continue into Durinbold Mausoleum or Hhune Mausoleum.
- 09Return to the graveyard before exploring the Mortuary, its cellar and the remaining tombs.
Note
“Lord Gregorion Gorion, First High Constable of Baldur’s Gate, the city’s protector.”
Interior and landmarks
The central burial chamber
The mausoleum is dominated by the sarcophagus of Lord Gregorion Gorion. A plaque identifies him as:
The game presents Lord Gorion as a respected civic hero known for heroism, wisdom and kindness. His tomb is therefore designed as a place of public honour rather than a neglected or concealed grave.
There are no shops, services, checkpoints or ordinary residents inside. The room is primarily an archaeological and lore space with several fixed interactables.
Lord Gorion’s sarcophagus
The sarcophagus can be opened with a DC 15 Strength check. It contains an Elixir of Heroism. The sarcophagus is also relevant to the visual layout of the room because the eastern and western routes are positioned around it.
The remains inside are unusually difficult to move. This has led to player speculation that the corpse may be useful for manipulating the weight-based mechanism encountered in Hhune Mausoleum. That connection is not explicitly confirmed by the location’s own text, so it is safest to treat the heavy remains as an environmental oddity rather than a documented required solution.
Eastern opening
A hole to the east of the sarcophagus leads towards Durinbold Mausoleum. The opening is a physical connection between the tombs rather than a separate quest entrance. Depending on the character’s size and positioning, reaching or using it may be more convenient for smaller characters.
Durinbold Mausoleum has its own access arrangements and loot. Do not attribute its contents to Gorion Mausoleum simply because the two spaces are connected.
Western crumbling wall
The western end of the chamber contains a crumbling wall that can be destroyed to reach Hhune Mausoleum. This is the most important secret route in the location because it allows the player to bypass or supplement the external entrance to Hhune’s tomb.
The game does not identify Gorion Mausoleum as a combat dungeon, so the wall is best understood as an exploration connection. The hazards and puzzle mechanics beyond it belong to Hhune Mausoleum.
---
Characters and ordinary NPCs
No named living character is documented as residing inside Gorion Mausoleum. The location contains Lord Gorion’s remains, but he is not an active NPC or recruitable character.
Visitors and graveyard personnel found outside belong to the Lower City Graveyard, not to the mausoleum itself. They include mourners, the Mortuary staff, Mortarch Gracie Scyre, Nina Dortmell, Maude and other graveyard visitors. Their scenes may change depending on the party’s progress through Act Three, particularly the investigation into the city murders.
Named characters in the parent graveyard, not inside the mausoleum
These names are included to clarify the boundary of the location. They are graveyard occupants or visitors and should not be presented as residents of Gorion Mausoleum.
---
Enemies, security and hazards
Enemies
No fixed enemy group or boss is listed for Gorion Mausoleum. Unlike several other Lower City tombs, the room is not presented as an undead combat encounter. Any fighting that occurs in the nearby graveyard is associated with separate events, such as Nina Dortmell’s attempted resurrection, Bugthimble’s grave encounter or other graveyard activities.
Traps
The mausoleum itself has no clearly documented trap sequence. The connected Hhune and Durinbold tombs may contain their own hazards, so prepare before crossing into either location.
Lockpicking and crime
Picking the outer gate is not treated as a crime. This is useful if you miss the key or want to enter immediately. The key remains available in the grass beside the entrance, making the mausoleum one of the easier Lower City tombs to access.
---
Loot and collectibles
The following fixed items are associated with Gorion Mausoleum.
The location page lists these six interior loot entries, together with the Elixir of Heroism. The exact arrangement of some written items may be easier to identify by using the highlight-items command or by searching the tables and stone surfaces around the sarcophagus.
A Plea for Protection is placed on a stone table immediately to the left of the sarcophagus. Its text describes a frightened citizen asking Gorion for protection from cultists, disappearances and the city’s increasingly dangerous unrest. The note helps connect the otherwise ceremonial tomb to the atmosphere of crisis in Act Three.

| A Plea for Protection | Stone table immediately left of the sarcophagus | A note asking Gorion for protection |
| A Plea to the Gods | Inside the mausoleum | Lore item |
| Hymns for the Gone | Inside the mausoleum | Written collectible |

Missions and activities
Gorion Mausoleum has no known dedicated quest that begins and ends entirely inside the tomb. Its activities are optional:
The parent graveyard is connected to several Act Three activities, including the murder investigation and optional encounters involving the Mortuary, Nina Dortmell and the graveyard’s mourners. These are not Gorion Mausoleum quests and should be recorded under the Lower City Graveyard instead.
---
Lore and continuity
The most notable unresolved question is whether Lord Gregorion Gorion is intended to be the same person as Gorion, the monk and foster father from the earlier Baldur’s Gate games.
The names are clearly designed to evoke the earlier character, and both figures are associated with wisdom, heroism and a protective role. However, the available lore creates substantial continuity problems. The Act One and Act Two games describe the earlier Gorion as a monk associated with Candlekeep, the Harpers and the protagonist’s upbringing. He died near Candlekeep rather than in Baldur’s Gate. He is also not normally called “Lord Gregorion Gorion” or described as the city’s First High Constable.
The game does not provide a definitive in-universe explanation resolving the discrepancy. Players should not treat the identity as confirmed fact.

Related locations
The Grand Mausoleum is another graveyard tomb but is not an internal section of Gorion Mausoleum and should be explored as a separate location.
