Note

This article covers the Hhune Mausoleum in the base game of Baldur’s Gate 3. It treats the mausoleum as a small, self-contained location within the Lower City Graveyard, including its concealed chamber. The adjacent Graveyard, mortuary, Knights of the Shield Hideout and Gorion Mausoleum are discussed as connected locations, but are not silently folded into the mausoleum’s boundaries.

Overview

The Hhune Mausoleum is an optional crypt in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate during Act Three. It stands in the Lower City Graveyard, beside the mortuary, and contains a locked family sarcophagus, several traps, two key-locked chests and a concealed chamber associated with the Knights of the Shield and the Emperor.

The mausoleum is not a quest hub and has no resident NPC, shop or boss encounter. Its importance comes from exploration: the entrance key is found elsewhere, the sarcophagus provides a clue to a weight-based secret-door puzzle, and the hidden room contains written evidence linking the Knights of the Shield to the Emperor. The location also provides a minor connection to the nearby Gorion Mausoleum through a breakable wall.

Overview and boundaries

The Hhune Mausoleum is a compact interior crypt rather than a broad district. Its accessible structure consists of the entrance passage and burial chamber, the hidden room opened by the weight puzzle, and the breakable western wall leading towards the Gorion Mausoleum.

The Lower City Graveyard is the wider outdoor area and should be treated as the parent location. It contains other burial structures, the mortuary and additional points of interest. The Hhune Mausoleum is only one of those sites. In particular, the nearby Gorion Mausoleum is a separate location, even though the two can be connected by destroying the crumbling western wall.

Neighbouring but separate areas

The Knights of the Shield Hideout is not a subarea of the mausoleum. It is relevant because the entrance key is stored there and because the hidden room contains evidence connected to that organisation.

Neighbouring but separate areas

Geography and access

Position in the Lower City

The entrance is on the northern side of the Lower City mortuary, within the Graveyard. The entrance area is close to the graveyard’s other tombs and mausoleums, so it is easy to mistake the crypt for part of a larger underground cemetery complex. In game terms, however, it is a distinct location.

Reaching the entrance

There are two practical ways to open the entrance gate:

The key is found in the Knights of the Shield Hideout, inside a mahogany wardrobe. A walkthrough of the Lower City places the wardrobe near the hideout entrance.

The mausoleum itself does not provide a waypoint, vendor or special travel facility.

Reaching the entrance

  1. 01
    Use the Hhune Mausoleum Key.
  2. 02
Lockpick the gate with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check.

Reaching the entrance: The most direct route is therefore

  1. 01
    Enter the Lower City.
  2. 02
Travel to the Lower City Graveyard.
  3. 03
    Locate the mortuary.
  4. 04
Search the northern side of the building for the mausoleum entrance.
  5. 05
Use the key or lockpick the gate.

Named directory: locations and connections

The following names are the verified locations directly associated with the mausoleum in the sources consulted.

The last two entries are connected locations rather than internal rooms of the mausoleum. The Graveyard is the parent outdoor area, while the Knights of the Shield Hideout is the source of the entrance key.

Interior layout and hazards

The main chamber contains a sarcophagus, columns, shelves and several concealed tripwire traps. The traps are placed around the burial area and can be revealed with Perception. The commonly documented detection difficulty is DC 15 Perception. Disarm them before moving around the sarcophagus, particularly if you are exploring with a party member who has low hit points or poor Dexterity.

A cracked floor tile to the east of the sarcophagus hides the Hhune Mausoleum Iron Key. This tile requires a DC 20 Perception check to reveal according to the location reference.

This order minimises the chance of triggering traps while you are carrying out the puzzle.

Recommended approach: A cautious exploration order is

  1. 01
Enter and stop before moving directly around the sarcophagus.
  2. 02
Use a character with good Perception to reveal the tripwires.
  3. 03
    Disarm the traps.
  4. 04
Search the cracked tile east of the sarcophagus.
  5. 05
    Open the sarcophagus.
  6. 06
Read the note before attempting the hidden-door puzzle.
  7. 07
Search the western wall for the breakable section.

Residents, factions and security

Residents and ordinary NPCs

There are no documented permanent residents, service providers or ordinary NPCs inside the Hhune Mausoleum. The crypt is an abandoned or unoccupied burial site during the game’s Act Three events.

The security of the location is environmental rather than social. Its principal protections are the locked entrance, hidden tripwires, concealed keys and the weight-sensitive secret door.

Knights of the Shield

The hidden room contains a Knights of the Shield statue and a journal written by one of the organisation’s members. The journal describes the writer being introduced to the Emperor, whom they believed could be a boon to the Knights. This gives the mausoleum a small but meaningful connection to the Knights of the Shield Hideout and the Emperor’s history.

The presence of the statue and journal does not turn the mausoleum into a faction base. No Knights of the Shield encounter or faction representative is documented as occupying the crypt during normal exploration.

Named directory: characters and factions

Characters

No named character is documented as physically residing in the Hhune Mausoleum.

The Hhune family names above belong to the wider Hhune family reference and should not be treated as mausoleum occupants.

Note

“KNEEL WITH THE WEIGHT OF ALL YOU VALUE AT HIS FEET, AND HE WILL REVEAL HIMSELF.”

The sarcophagus and its clue

Opening the sarcophagus requires a DC 15 Strength check. Inside are three important fixed discoveries:

The wording is a direct clue to the pressure tile at the foot of the sarcophagus. The clue does not require a specific character, class or spell. It points towards placing substantial weight on the tile rather than interacting with the sarcophagus again.

Hidden-room puzzle walkthrough

Solving the weight mechanism

The documented requirement is a combined inventory weight of 400 kg, or 800 lb. The wording of the note makes the puzzle appear more mysterious than it is, but the solution is simply to use the weight system.

Practical ways to meet the weight requirement

Turn-based mode is useful because it lets you position characters one at a time and reduces the risk of accidentally walking over nearby traps. A character with high Perception is also valuable for revealing the tile.

The exact interface behaviour can vary depending on how weight is distributed between characters and containers. If the door does not open, check that the characters or objects are actually on the tile rather than merely beside it, and redistribute more heavy equipment.

Solving the weight mechanism

  1. 01
Open the sarcophagus with a DC 15 Strength check.
  2. 02
Take the Hhune Mausoleum Golden Key and read THE LEGACY OF HHUNE.
  3. 03
Search around the foot of the sarcophagus, between the columns.
  4. 04
Pass the relevant Perception check to reveal the pressure tile.
  5. 05
Place characters, containers or other heavy objects on the tile.
  6. 06
Reach a combined weight of at least 400 kg / 800 lb.
  7. 07
Wait for the concealed door in the south-eastern wall to open.

The hidden room

The concealed room contains a statue associated with the Knights of the Shield, a journal and two chests.

Loot and objects

The contents of the two chests are described as random valuables rather than a single fixed named reward table. They should therefore be treated separately from the fixed Shield +1 and keys found in the main burial chamber.

The journal and the Emperor

The journal is the hidden room’s principal lore reward. Its writer describes being introduced to the Emperor and considers the meeting potentially beneficial to the Knights of the Shield. This makes the room a small piece of the Emperor’s backstory and suggests that the Knights had some awareness of, or contact with, him before the events revealed elsewhere in Act Three.

This is environmental lore rather than a separate quest step. Reading the journal does not, by itself, begin a new mission.

Western wall and the Gorion Mausoleum

A crumbling wall at the western end of the Hhune Mausoleum can be destroyed. The opening provides access towards the Gorion Mausoleum. The Gorion Mausoleum remains a separate location and should not be counted as part of the Hhune Mausoleum’s internal layout.

This connection is useful for players exploring the Graveyard systematically, but it does not create a new faction encounter or a service point inside Hhune’s tomb.

Named directory: items, literature and fixed objects

Fixed items

The entrance key is found outside the mausoleum in the Knights of the Shield Hideout. The iron and golden keys are found inside the mausoleum. The Shield +1 is inside the sarcophagus.

Other named or identifiable objects

The chests contain random valuables, so their precise contents may not be appropriate for a fixed item directory. The shelves’ silver valuables are likewise described as miscellaneous valuables rather than a single named collectible set.

Inside the mausoleum

  1. 01
Open the entrance with the Hhune Mausoleum Key or a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check.
  2. 02
Reveal and disarm the tripwire traps around the burial chamber.
  3. 03
Search the cracked tile east of the sarcophagus for the Hhune Mausoleum Iron Key.
  4. 04
Open the sarcophagus with a DC 15 Strength check.
  5. 05
Collect the Shield +1 and Hhune Mausoleum Golden Key.
  6. 06
    Read THE LEGACY OF HHUNE.
  7. 07
Reveal the pressure tile between the columns at the sarcophagus’s foot.
  8. 08
Place at least 400 kg / 800 lb of combined weight on the tile.
  9. 09
    Enter the south-eastern hidden room.
  10. 10
Open the gilded chest with the Golden Key.
  11. 11
Open the heavy chest with the Iron Key.
  12. 12
Read the journal and search the shelves.
  13. 13
Break the western crumbling wall if you also want to inspect the route towards the Gorion Mausoleum.

Suggested exploration route through the wider Graveyard

Because the mausoleum is only one part of the Lower City Graveyard, a sensible route is to first explore the outdoor graveyard and mortuary, then enter Hhune’s tomb once you have either obtained the key or assembled a lockpicking character.

The key can be obtained before entering the mausoleum by searching the Knights of the Shield Hideout’s mahogany wardrobe.

A practical order is

  1. 01
    Enter the Lower City Graveyard.
  2. 02
Search the mortuary and note the other graveyard structures.
  3. 03
    Visit the Hhune Mausoleum entrance.
  4. 04
If you do not yet have the key, make a note of the location and continue towards the Knights of the Shield Hideout.
  5. 05
Return with the key or a suitable Sleight of Hand character.
  6. 06
Complete Hhune Mausoleum’s fixed loot and hidden-room puzzle.
  7. 07
Use the western wall to continue towards the separate Gorion Mausoleum.
  8. 08
Return to the wider Graveyard and inspect any remaining tombs or mission locations.

Progression and missability

The Hhune Mausoleum is an optional Act Three location. No source consulted identifies a main quest requirement, timed event or boss encounter that forces the player through it.

The following actions are available independently of the main story:

As with other Lower City content, access to Act Three is itself a progression requirement. The mausoleum is not available during Acts One or Two because it is located in the Act Three Lower City. The sources consulted do not document a specific permanent lockout or story-state change that removes the mausoleum’s contents, so claims of guaranteed missability should be avoided.

Hazards and troubleshooting

“I cannot find the Iron Key”

Search for the cracked tile east of the sarcophagus. It is hidden behind a Perception check, documented as DC 20. If the check fails, use another character with better Perception or return after increasing your detection capability.

“I triggered a trap”

The tripwires are around the sarcophagus. Reveal them before searching the chamber thoroughly, then disarm them with a character suited to trap work. The documented Perception difficulty is DC 15.

“I do not have enough weight”

Bring in spare armour, weapons, containers and other heavy equipment. You can also distribute weight among several party members. Turn-based mode makes it easier to move everyone onto the tile without accidentally leaving the area.
