About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers the end of Act Two, the Moonrise Towers assault, Ketheric Thorm’s boss sequence, companion quests, The Dark Urge’s background and several missable rewards.
Overview
The Mind Flayer Colony is a late-Act-Two dungeon beneath Moonrise Towers in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is reached during the first stage of the confrontation with Ketheric Thorm, after the battle on the Moonrise Towers rooftop. The colony is not simply one room beneath the tower. It is a broad, self-contained area containing the Morgue, Necrotic Laboratory, Tadpoling Centre, Brine Pools room, Barracks and the final route towards Ketheric’s lower arena. The earlier Oubliette beneath Moonrise Towers Prison is nearby, but it is a separate area and should not be treated as part of the colony’s main playable map.
The colony is significant because it brings several Act Two storylines together:
---
Standard route
The normal route is tied to the first fight with Ketheric Thorm.
The colony cannot normally be explored as an ordinary early-game location. It is intended to be entered late in Act Two, after the Moonrise Towers assault has begun. The Tadpoling Centre page likewise identifies the area as accessible only after the initial confrontation with Ketheric.
Standard route: steps
- 01Fight Ketheric Thorm on the Moonrise Towers rooftop.
- 02Watch him retreat across the bridge towards the Hollow Tower.
- 03Follow him and jump down into the tower.
- 04Break through the fleshy membrane blocking the colony’s entrance.
- 05Enter the colony and begin the final Act Two dungeon sequence.
Returning to the colony
The colony is primarily a one-way late-game progression area. The practical assumption should be that you will complete it in one visit. Alternative sequence breaks and unusual movement methods may allow access to parts of the map under exceptional circumstances, but these are not the intended progression route and should not be confused with normal access.
---
Entrance corridor
The entrance corridor is the first section after the rooftop descent. A fleshy membrane blocks the way forward and must be destroyed. Intellect devourers roam the surrounding passages. They are not necessarily immediately hostile, but nearby combat can cause them to join the fight.
From the entrance, the Tadpoling Centre is the first major side area. The corridor also leads towards the Brine Pools room and the colony’s other wings. This is a good point to create a save because the area soon branches into several quest-critical interactions.
Tadpoling Centre
The Tadpoling Centre is a circular chamber containing ten mind flayer pods, arranged along the walls. Some pods are empty, some contain mind flayers and others contain humanoid prisoners. The room is maintained by intellect devourers.
The Neural Apparatus controls all active pods simultaneously. It offers three broad choices:
The release battle includes four mind flayers and six intellect devourers according to the quest documentation. The freed humanoids join the party, including Zevlor if he survives.
Recommended approach
Zevlor explains that the Absolute enthralled him by offering to restore his paladin status. If he survives, he promises to lead the other survivors to safety. Completing the rescue can provide Zevlor and a Hellrider squad as an ally for Gather Your Allies in Act Three.
Tadpoling Centre directory
The Ruptured Mind Flayer Pod is especially relevant to The Dark Urge. Investigating it can reveal that the blood on the casing belongs to the Dark Urge and can advance Open Your Scars.
---
Recommended approach: If you want to save Zevlor
- 01Inspect the occupied pods if desired.
- 02Use the Neural Apparatus.
- 03Select the option that opens or releases the pods.
- 04Prioritise the mind flayers and intellect devourers.
- 05Avoid damaging Zevlor or the other freed prisoners with area-of-effect spells.
- 06Speak to Zevlor after the fight.

Brine Pools room
The Brine Pools room lies beyond the Tadpoling Centre. Its most important feature is a pod containing Mizora, Zariel’s agent and Wyll’s patron.
The controls can be identified through an Arcana check. Characters who deciphered the same terms in the Nautiloid’s Ceremorphosis Chambers may already understand their meaning. The safe choice is to unleash Mizora.
If the party chooses annihilate, Mizora is destroyed and Wyll dies, whether or not he is currently in the active party. This is a severe companion consequence, not merely a missed reward.
The rapier is a reward connected to Wyll’s companion quest, The Blade of Frontiers, rather than a normal chest item. A Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen can also be found in a nearby brine pool after a Perception check.

If Mizora is freed
- 01Keep Wyll in the party if you want the reward conversation.
- 02Speak to Mizora after the rescue.
- 03Pass the relevant Persuasion check.
- 04Receive the Infernal Rapier for Wyll.
Morgue
The Morgue is operated by Chop, a bugbear who processes corpses and creates new intellect devourers. A mechanical device called Touch controls a corpse-delivery pipe. The first interaction with the device drops a corpse, which can be examined with Speak with Dead.
If Us survived the Nautiloid, Us is imprisoned in a cage in the Morgue. The party can persuade, intimidate or use illithid-related dialogue to convince Chop to hand over the cage key. Freeing Us grants the ability or item Summon Us, allowing the intellect devourer to be summoned later.
Attacking Chop makes him and nearby intellect devourers hostile. The intellect devourers elsewhere in the colony do not necessarily become hostile merely because Chop is killed.

Mind-Archive Interface
The Mind-Archive Interface is located near the Slack-Skinned Head in the colony. It allows the party to place preserved “minds” into the apparatus and hear the memories or final thoughts of the people they belonged to. The interface becomes accessible after the undead encounter in the relevant laboratory area.
Several minds can be found across the game, including on the Nautiloid and in the colony. The interface is mainly a lore feature, but it is useful for understanding the colony’s experiments and the experiences of its victims.
Mind-Archive directory
The Waking Mind is associated with the Necrotic Laboratory’s brain puzzle and should not be confused with the ordinary minds found in the Morgue.
---
Necrotic Laboratory
The Necrotic Laboratory is in the south-east of the colony. It is Balthazar’s research area and contains one of the dungeon’s most substantial optional encounters. Entering the main laboratory triggers a battle involving:
The encounter is dangerous because the Death Shepherd and necromantic enemies can create or empower additional undead. Focus fire on the Death Shepherd where possible, control the approach routes and avoid allowing the group to become surrounded.
The laboratory also contains valuable equipment and lore relating to Balthazar’s experiments. The notable loot directory includes:
The Brain Mapping Puzzle lies at the southern end of the laboratory. It presents four mental faculties:
The objective is to connect each faculty to its identical counterpart on the opposite side by selecting the correct intervening nodes. Solving the puzzle opens a locked section containing the Blade of Oppressed Souls and the Waking Mind. Characters with the Sage background can also receive the Brain Blast! inspiration point.

The Mol’s Eyepatch is located in the laboratory and advances Find Mol. It is distinct from the colony’s other quest rewards and can be overlooked if the laboratory is treated only as an optional combat area.

Barracks
The Barracks occupy the north-eastern section of the colony. They are used by Kressa Bonedaughter and several Myrkulite cultists.
Kressa is a necromancer working under Balthazar. She is accompanied or supported by:
Approaching Kressa normally leads towards combat, but a DC 21 Deception check can convince her that the party belongs in the colony. If she is successfully deceived, the group can disperse and Kressa can later be approached for a blessing. A successful DC 18 Persuasion check allows each party member to receive Myrkul’s Gift.
Myrkul’s Gift grants temporary hit points and, while those temporary hit points remain, adds necrotic damage to weapon attacks and provides cold and necrotic resistance. Its exact availability and dialogue can vary according to the character speaking to Kressa. Characters without a tadpole may require an additional Persuasion check.
The Dark Urge
If the player character is The Dark Urge, Kressa recognises them. She explains that the Dark Urge was once held in the colony, badly injured and repeatedly opened up for parasite research. This conversation identifies the Dark Urge as an unusually resilient early tadpole victim and provides major context for the character’s past.
The Dark Urge’s unique conversation eventually leads to combat with Kressa. Disguising the Dark Urge can alter the presentation of the scene, but it does not remove the wider significance of the encounter. The related quest is Open Your Scars.
Barracks directory
The conditional zombie appearances depend on earlier story outcomes. They should not be treated as guaranteed occupants in every playthrough.
---
Story-associated characters
The principal named characters connected with the colony are:
Not all of these are ordinary residents. Mizora and Zevlor are prisoners or visitors, while Balthazar and Ketheric are associated with the colony’s operation but are not standing vendors or permanent conversational residents.
Factions
Cult of Myrkul
Kressa, Balthazar and the necromantic staff represent the Cult of Myrkul. Their presence reflects Ketheric’s position as a chosen servant of Myrkul rather than the colony being a purely independent illithid settlement.
Mind flayers and intellect devourers
The colony contains mind flayers in pods, newly created intellect devourers and free-roaming intellect devourers. Some are neutral until combat begins, while others become hostile as part of scripted encounters.
Prisoners of the Absolute
Zevlor and the other occupants of the Tadpoling Centre are prisoners used in the colony’s experiments. They are not a unified faction before release, but the surviving humanoids become temporary allies during the pod encounter.
---
Ambient intellect devourers
Intellect devourers move through several colony corridors. Some remain neutral until combat occurs nearby. Do not assume that a neutral creature will remain uninvolved once a fight begins.
Tadpoling Centre battle
Releasing the pods starts a multi-sided encounter. The freed prisoners help the party, while the mind flayers and intellect devourers attack. Positioning matters because the chamber is open enough for mind flayer abilities to affect several characters.
Necrotic Laboratory battle
The laboratory is the colony’s major optional combat encounter. The Death Shepherd should usually be the priority target because the undead group becomes much harder to control if it is allowed to act freely.
Kressa Bonedaughter
Kressa can be talked down temporarily with Deception, but the Dark Urge’s special conversation leads to combat. Her loot includes the Myrkulite Scourge.
Ketheric Thorm
The colony forms part of the route to Ketheric’s second phase. The Netherstone, Ketheric’s Shield, Ketheric’s Warhammer and Reaper’s Embrace are associated with the Ketheric encounter rather than with an ordinary colony chest. Keep these separate when cataloguing colony loot.
---
The list above distinguishes fixed or quest-linked rewards from ordinary containers and random equipment. The colony also contains incidental weapons, potions, scrolls, books and corpses, but their exact contents can vary with loot tables and game updates. The major item locations are documented in the Act Two magic-item list and the colony page.
---
This route prioritises time-sensitive companion and prisoner content before the final boss progression. It also allows the party to complete the laboratory puzzle while resources are still available.

A practical route that minimises backtracking is
- 01Enter the colony and destroy the membrane.
- 02Visit the Tadpoling Centre first. Rescue Zevlor before moving deeper.
- 03Cross to the Brine Pools room. Free Mizora and check the nearby brine pool for the parasite specimen.
- 04Explore the Morgue. Free Us, speak with Chop if desired and inspect the Mind-Archive Interface.
- 05Clear the Necrotic Laboratory. Defeat the undead, collect the laboratory loot and solve the Brain Mapping Puzzle.
- 06Visit the Barracks. Speak to Kressa, resolve the Deception route or fight the cultists, then collect her notes and loot.
- 07Make a final preparation save.
- 08Continue towards Ketheric’s lower arena.
Mizora
Do not choose Annihilate unless you deliberately want the Wyll death outcome. Mizora’s destruction kills Wyll even if he is not currently in the party.
Zevlor and the rescued prisoners
When releasing the pods, be careful with area-of-effect attacks. Zevlor and the other survivors can become hostile if damaged by the party, including through spells that were not aimed directly at them.
No camp access
The inability to long rest makes the colony feel more like a single extended expedition than a normal Act Two location. Use the rooftop as the final chance to adjust party composition and prepare.
Kressa’s blessing
If you want Myrkul’s Gift, use the Deception route before attacking. Starting combat immediately can remove the opportunity to receive the blessing.
The Dark Urge content
Bring the Dark Urge to the Barracks and Tadpoling Centre if you want the fullest personal-history sequence. The colony is one of the most important locations for this origin character.
Conditional residents
The zombie versions of Dror Ragzlin, Minthara and Wulbren depend on earlier decisions. Their absence does not necessarily indicate an error or incomplete exploration.
---
The colony demonstrates how the Absolute’s operation combines several systems rather than relying on a single faction. Mind flayer biology supplies the pods and parasites, the Cult of Myrkul provides necromantic expertise, and Moonrise Towers supplies prisoners and political control.
The Tadpoling Centre shows the colony’s intended production process: captives are infected, observed and either transformed or retained for further experimentation. The Morgue shows how corpses are processed into intellect devourers. The Necrotic Laboratory connects these experiments to Balthazar’s research and to the broader plan involving Ketheric and the Chosen.
The colony also provides a personal link between the main plot and individual companions. Mizora’s imprisonment advances Wyll’s story, Zevlor’s captivity resolves a major tiefling storyline, and Kressa’s recollections expose the Dark Urge’s history. This makes the location more than a combat dungeon. It is a record of what Moonrise Towers has been doing beneath its public religious facade.
The game’s later references to the colony also distinguish the player’s experience from the Emperor’s memories. The Emperor recalls being captured beneath Moonrise Towers, but his recollection does not show the Tadpoling Centre in the same way, suggesting that the colony’s rooms and procedures changed over time or that different prisoners were held in different parts of the complex.
---
Is the Oubliette part of the Mind Flayer Colony?
No. The Oubliette is a neighbouring area beneath Moonrise Towers Prison. It contains Chop and related encounters, but it is not the normal route into the main colony.
Can I enter the colony before fighting Ketheric?
Not through the intended route. The main colony becomes accessible after the rooftop confrontation with Ketheric Thorm.
Can I save Zevlor?
Yes. Open the pods through the Neural Apparatus, win the resulting battle and keep Zevlor alive. Purging the pods kills him.
Can I save Wyll and still get the Infernal Rapier?
Yes. Free Mizora, keep Wyll present during the reward conversation and pass the relevant Persuasion dialogue.
What happens if I kill Mizora?
Wyll dies, regardless of whether he is currently in the active party.
Where is the colony’s best optional loot?
The Necrotic Laboratory contains the Brain Mapping Puzzle and several of the most valuable optional rewards, including the Blade of Oppressed Souls and Waking Mind.
Is there a vendor in the colony?
No verified functional shop or merchant is associated with the colony. The named characters here are quest characters, cultists, prisoners or enemies rather than service providers.
