Key takeaways
- The Oubliette is a separate location from the Mind Flayer Colony, despite their visual and narrative connection.
- The safest planned route is through Moonrise Towers Prison, using the prison’s cave tunnel and Cragged Rock to descend.
- Jumping into the red pit or the hole in Cell Three gets you into the Oubliette, but those entrances do not provide a way back out.
- Zealot Krizt’s corpse can contain a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, unless the specimen has already been obtained from Krizt elsewhere.
- Vermit, a dead goblin hidden behind destructible membranes, can be questioned with Speak with Dead.
- Prisoners who are not rescued before the relevant progression point can later appear dead in the Oubliette.
About this guide
This guide covers the Oubliette in the base game of Baldur’s Gate 3. Major Act Two spoilers follow.
Overview
The Oubliette is a hidden biological dumping ground beneath Moonrise Towers, in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. It is not the same place as the Mind Flayer Colony, although the two areas are closely related in the story and can appear adjacent on the world map. The Oubliette is where the Cult of the Absolute disposes of failed experiments, prisoners and other unwanted remains.
For most players, the Oubliette is an optional side area reached through Moonrise Towers Prison. It contains a small but worthwhile collection of loot, a parasite specimen, a hidden corpse that can be questioned with Speak with Dead, and story evidence about what happens to people who are supposedly “ascended” by the Absolute. Its most important practical feature is that several entrances are one-way drops, while the route through the prison’s cave tunnel provides the reliable exit.
Boundaries and hierarchy
The Oubliette belongs to the Shadow-Cursed Lands and lies beneath Moonrise Towers, but it should not be treated as simply another room of the Mind Flayer Colony. The game presents the Oubliette as part of the same underground system of Cult of the Absolute facilities, yet the playable areas are distinct.
This distinction matters because the Oubliette contains a small exploration space beneath the prison, while the Mind Flayer Colony is a later story area reached from the Moonrise Towers rooftop after the confrontation with Ketheric Thorm. The Oubliette does not provide a route into the Mind Flayer Colony, and the Mind Flayer Colony cannot be used as a normal route back into the Oubliette.
Nearby but separate
These areas are connected by story or geography, but are not subareas of the Oubliette:
The prison is best understood as the Oubliette’s principal access area, not as a subarea inside it.

Geography and atmosphere
The Oubliette is an underground biological refuse chamber. Its surfaces are covered with blood, fleshy material and discarded bodies, giving it a markedly different appearance from the masonry corridors of Moonrise Towers above. The area suggests that the tower’s experiments and executions are not merely hidden from public view, but are being processed through an illithid-influenced disposal system.
Most entrances deposit the party in or near the main chamber. The chamber is broad enough for exploration and combat, but it is not a large dungeon with multiple branching wings. The most significant concealed space is on the northern side, where destructible membranes hide Vermit’s remains.
Named places within scope
The last three names are access features associated with the prison route rather than independent Oubliette districts.

How to reach the Oubliette
There are several verified ways to enter. They differ significantly in convenience and whether they permit a return journey.
Recommended route: the prison cave tunnel
The most practical route for deliberate exploration begins in Moonrise Towers Prison.
The prison-side cave route is especially useful because the Cragged Rock is the route identified as allowing the party to leave the Oubliette.
Approximate map references commonly associated with this route are:
Coordinates can vary slightly depending on the map reference and should be treated as navigation aids rather than exact gameplay requirements.
Red pit behind the Warden’s tower
A red pit behind the prison’s Warden tower leads down into the Oubliette. The entrance is surrounded by skeletons and can be recognised as a conspicuous drop rather than a conventional doorway.
This is an entry-only route. The party can jump down, but cannot simply jump back out. Use it only if you are prepared to explore the area and either find the prison-side exit or use fast travel where available.
Approximate location: X 580, Y -680 to -690.
Hole in Cell Three
A green-glowing hole in the floor of Cell Three can also be used as a drop into the Oubliette. Like the red pit, this is not a normal two-way entrance.
The cell is particularly relevant if the party has been imprisoned or arrested in Moonrise Towers. Check the destination before committing a character to the jump, since the route can separate the party’s positioning and does not itself provide a convenient way back up.
Approximate location: X 579, Y -615.
Cracked Wall in Moonrise Towers
A party member can be pulled into the Oubliette through the Cracked Wall in Moonrise Towers. This occurs if the character interacts with the wall and fails the relevant checks or chooses to submit.
This route is story-flavoured and can inflict Dislocated Shoulder. It is not the best method for players who simply want to collect the area’s loot, but it is a legitimate way to reach the Oubliette and can occur naturally during exploration of Moonrise Towers.
Approximate location: X -126, Y -177.
Continuing along the road to Baldur’s Gate too early
While travelling through Reithwin Town towards Baldur’s Gate, the party may be given the option to continue. If this is attempted before the relevant Act Two progression has been completed, the party can be captured and transported to the Oubliette.
This is not a standard exploration route. It is a progression-state consequence and can be surprising if the player believes they are simply leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

Recommended route: the prison cave tunnel
- 01Enter Moonrise Towers Prison.
- 02Travel towards the far end of the prison.
- 03Climb or jump through the cave tunnels near the prison’s cliffs.
- 04Reach the Cragged Rock.
- 05Descend into the Oubliette.
- 06Explore the main chamber and return through the same route.

| Cave-tunnel approach | around X 545, Y -650 |
| Cragged Rock | around X 505, Y -615 |
Leaving the Oubliette
If you enter through the red pit or Cell Three, do not assume that the entrance can be reversed. The prison’s cave tunnels and Cragged Rock are the important physical exit route.
The area may also interact with fast travel depending on the party’s current state, but the physical route through Cragged Rock is the reliable, location-specific exit described by the available location references.
---
A practical procedure is
- 01Finish the main chamber before leaving.
- 02Search the northern membrane area.
- 03Loot Zealot Krizt and the nearby viscera.
- 04Return towards the prison-side cave section.
- 05Climb or jump via Cragged Rock into Moonrise Towers Prison.
Main chamber
The main chamber is the Oubliette’s principal exploration area. It contains the largest concentration of corpses, viscera and organic debris, as well as the bodies of certain Moonrise prisoners if they were not rescued in time.
The chamber is also where the party encounters the area’s hostile creatures. The principal named enemy type recorded for the Oubliette is the Hook Horror. These creatures help establish that the place is not merely a passive corpse dump. The area can contain active threats even when the party arrives through an otherwise quiet route.

Northern hidden area
A section on the northern side of the main chamber is concealed behind destructible membranes. Breaking through these membranes reveals the corpse of Vermit, a goblin and former True Soul.
Vermit is one of the Oubliette’s most valuable discoveries from a lore perspective. The party can use Speak with Dead on him, revealing information about the fate of followers of the Absolute who are said to “ascend”. His corpse provides evidence that the cult’s promises conceal a much more disturbing process.
Directory: northern hidden area
There is no indication that Vermit is a surviving resident or recruitable NPC. He is present as a corpse and a lore interaction.
---
Named characters and residents
The Oubliette has no conventional resident population, vendors or friendly settlement. Its named figures are primarily dead bodies, story casualties or remains connected to Moonrise Towers.
Vermit
Vermit is a dead goblin found behind the northern membranes. He can be questioned with Speak with Dead. His testimony helps explain the real outcome awaiting certain True Souls and other believers who accept the Absolute’s promise of transformation.
Zealot Krizt
Zealot Krizt’s corpse lies near the western side of the hidden section. His body is important because it can provide a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen, although the specimen may already have been obtained if Krizt was previously killed at the docks.
The parasite is therefore a potentially missable or duplicated-state reward depending on the party’s earlier actions. Loot the corpse before moving on if you are collecting parasite specimens.
Prisoners who can appear as corpses
The following Moonrise prisoners can be found dead in the Oubliette if the required rescue conditions are not met:
Their appearance is conditional rather than guaranteed. They are generally found here if they were not freed before the relevant progression point involving the Nightsong, or if the party released prisoners but failed to get them safely to Last Light Inn before the state changed.
These characters should therefore be treated as conditional casualties, not permanent Oubliette residents.
---
Enemies and security
The Oubliette does not have a conventional guard force, prison warden or law-enforcement system of its own. Its security is represented by the area’s hostile creatures and by the fact that the space is concealed beneath a heavily controlled cult stronghold.
Verified enemy directory
The available location evidence identifies Hook Horrors as the Oubliette’s creature encounter. Other threats may vary with game state, difficulty, or the circumstances under which the party enters, but the Oubliette should not be presented as having a larger fixed enemy roster without stronger evidence.
---
Items and collectibles
The Oubliette’s rewards are modest in number but useful for Act Two progression and exploration.
The Harp-Shaped Pin, gold and ingredients are found together in viscera near the corpse of Zealot Krizt. The parasite is the most significant item because it contributes to the party’s available illithid power progression.
Loot checklist
The parasite specimen may not appear if it was already collected from Krizt elsewhere, and some players have reported state-dependent issues with corpse availability. The safest practice is to inspect Krizt’s body before making major progression decisions.

Progression changes and missable content
The Oubliette is strongly affected by Act Two progression.
Prisoner deaths
Prisoners held in Moonrise Towers can be transferred from living rescue targets to corpses in the Oubliette if they are not freed before the relevant story transition. The most important trigger is the progression surrounding the Nightsong. Releasing prisoners but failing to escort them safely to Last Light Inn can also produce the same outcome.
This means the Oubliette can function as a grim record of missed rescues. If you care about the Moonrise prisoners, resolve their rescue before dealing with the Nightsong and before allowing the prison situation to advance.
The parasite specimen
Zealot Krizt’s specimen is conditional because Krizt can be encountered in another context. If the party has already killed him at the docks and taken the specimen, the Oubliette corpse may not provide another copy. Players pursuing every illithid parasite should record where each specimen was collected rather than assuming every corpse will always carry one.
Access to the Mind Flayer Colony
The Oubliette does not unlock the Mind Flayer Colony. The Colony becomes accessible through the Moonrise Towers rooftop sequence after Ketheric Thorm is defeated. Entering the Oubliette early does not substitute for that progression.
---
Background inspirations
An oubliette is traditionally a hidden prison or underground chamber from which escape is difficult or impossible. The term comes from the French oublier, meaning “to forget”. The name suits this area’s function: prisoners, failed subjects and corpses are removed from the visible structure of Moonrise Towers and treated as waste.
The game’s Oubliette also draws on illithid imagery. Its fleshy surfaces, viscera and biological refuse visually connect it to the mind flayer side of the Cult of the Absolute, even though it is not the same playable map as the Mind Flayer Colony.
---
Suggested exploration route
This route avoids treating the Oubliette as a dead-end and makes it easier to collect the fixed rewards in one pass.
---
For a clean, low-risk visit
- 01Enter Moonrise Towers Prison before triggering major Act Two end-state events.
- 02Resolve the prison rescue content first if you want to save the prisoners.
- 03Use the prison’s cave tunnel rather than the red pit or Cell Three hole.
- 04Descend through Cragged Rock.
- 05Clear the main chamber and deal with the Hook Horror.
- 06Search the viscera near Zealot Krizt.
- 07Loot Krizt’s corpse and check whether the parasite specimen is present.
- 08Break the northern membranes.
- 09Use Speak with Dead on Vermit.
- 10Inspect any conditional prisoner corpses.
- 11Return through Cragged Rock into Moonrise Towers Prison.
