Key takeaways

  • Sorcerous Sundries is in the Heapside district of the Lower City, near the Stormshore Armoury, Bonecloak’s Apothecary and the Central Watch Tower.
  • The shop has a ground-floor trading hall, a first floor with the portal to Ramazith’s Tower, and a hidden office route into the Sorcerous Vault.
  • Tolna Tome-Monger can reveal the existence of the vault, but access normally requires entering her office and activating the Clasped Book.
  • The vault contains The Annals of Karsus, The Tharchiate Codex, The Red Knight’s Final Strategem, Caution Before the Seelie, unique scrolls and other rare loot.
  • The shop’s merchant can be Rolan, Rolan’s Projection or Lorroakan’s Projection, depending on earlier choices and progression.
  • The most important story decision here concerns whether the party supports Lorroakan or Dame Aylin.

About this guide

Scope: Baldur’s Gate 3, base game, Act Three Spoilers: Major spoilers for Find the Nightsong, Gale’s personal quest, Unlock the Ancient Tome, Lorroakan and Dame Aylin’s storyline, and several high-value items.

Overview

Sorcerous Sundries is one of the Lower City’s most important late-game locations. It is both a functioning magical shop and the entrance to a concealed vault containing rare books, unique spell scrolls and some of Act Three’s most valuable equipment. It is also the public face of Lorroakan’s operation, making the building the starting point for the final stage of Find the Nightsong.

The name can be confusing because the location is closely connected to two other areas: the Sorcerous Vault beneath the shop and Ramazith’s Tower, which is reached through a portal on the shop’s first floor. For clarity, this guide treats the shop and its vault as the Sorcerous Sundries location proper. Ramazith’s Tower is covered as a connected but distinct area, because it has separate floors, encounters, loot and progression. The vault is included because it is accessed directly from the shop and functions as its hidden storage area.

Separate but connected

---

The ground floor is an open circular trading hall. Counters, display cases, bookcases and tables form rings around the central shop counter. Some items are freely lootable, while others are red-outlined and count as theft if taken.

The room is guarded by four Animated Armours, so careless looting can quickly become a fight. The shop also contains harmless magical displays, including lava and water elementals. A continuously operating Find Familiar effect periodically summons lesser conjured animals such as cats, crabs, frogs, rats and spiders.

Ramazith’s Towera distinct tower area reached through the first-floor portal. It contains Lorroakan, the Nightsong confrontation and the items Markoheshkir and Robe of the Weave.

Bonecloak’s Apothecarya neighbouring business, not part of the shop.
Philgrave’s Mansiona related Lower City location, but not physically part of Sorcerous Sundries.

Ground-floor displays and free loot

Several useful items can be taken from the displays or counters.

The free bookcases are worth checking even if the party is not interested in role-playing as book collectors. Many volumes from the Schools of Magic and The Apprentice’s Companion series can be taken without stealing. Wizards can also find useful material to read or sell, although most of the shop’s genuinely important books are stored in the vault.

Main counter and merchant state

The main counter sells magical equipment, potions and spell scrolls. The merchant present depends on the party’s progression and earlier decisions.

Merchant inventories can vary with restocking and progression. One important missability issue concerns Rolan’s unique equipment. If Rolan is initially acting as the merchant, his uniquely named items can remain attached to his inventory even if Lorroakan’s Projection later takes over. In that situation, the items may need to be bought or pickpocketed from Rolan before they become inaccessible through the later merchant state.

Tolna Tome-Monger

Tolna is the head of the shop’s literature department and a merchant who sells books and high-level spell scrolls. She is the key to learning about the vault.

She initially refuses to show or sell these books because they are kept in the vault. With suitable dialogue checks, she can reveal that the vault is accessible through her office. The relevant checks include Deception, Persuasion and Intimidation. The exact difficulty depends on the dialogue route and character, with the available evidence recording DC 18 Deception or Persuasion and DC 16 Intimidation in the standard interaction. Wizards may receive a different Persuasion difficulty.

A dangerous dialogue option can cause the books beside Tolna to erupt in fire. If this happens, she refuses to trade or provide information until the party pays 400 gold to cover the damage. This is avoidable, so players planning to use Tolna as a merchant should save before experimenting with her dialogue.

Cordrane the Recent

Cordrane is a necromancer associated with the shop. He sells zombies as household helpers and personal guards. His presence reinforces the shop’s deliberately broad definition of “magical goods”: Sorcerous Sundries is not only a bookstore or scroll seller, but a marketplace for magical curiosities, creatures and services.

---

Two staircases lead to the first floor. The landing and adjoining rooms are protected by two additional Animated Armours.

The first-floor area is important for three reasons:

Cordrane the Recent: steps

  1. 01
It contains the route to Ramazith’s Tower.
  2. 02
It contains Tolna’s office and the portal to the vault.
  3. 03
It contains the written directions used to solve the vault’s door puzzle.

Lorroakan’s Projection and the four portals

On the first visit, the party encounters Lorroakan’s Projection. It asks for information about the Nightsong and presents four portals, each accompanied by a description of what the Nightsong might be.

The correct portal is the pale blue portal. It leads to Ramazith’s Tower. The other three portals eject anyone who enters rather than providing alternative routes through the building. The arrangement and colour of the portals do not change.

This is a progression state rather than a puzzle with multiple valid destinations. Players who want to explore the shop thoroughly should not worry about permanently choosing the wrong portal. The incorrect options simply return the character outside the relevant route.

Tolna’s office

Tolna’s office is locked. It can be opened by:

Inside the office are several useful clues and access tools:

Interacting with the Clasped Book opens a permanent portal into the central room of the Sorcerous Vault. Once activated, the book itself is no longer usable as an object, but the portal remains available.

Other first-floor rooms

A small bedroom contains The Path to Karsus, a note that gives the sequence needed to reach the Karsus section of the vault. It is in a locked, red-outlined room, so entering without permission can be treated as trespassing.

The ground floor also contains The Path to Elminster, located beneath Tolna’s counter. These two notes are not merely flavour text. Together, they provide the intended route through the vault’s teleporting-door puzzle.

---

The Sorcerous Vault is the shop’s hidden storage area and one of the richest treasure locations in Act Three. It contains dangerous traps, rare spell scrolls, valuable books and quest-critical items.

While inside the vault, the party cannot fast travel or travel to camp. Prepare the party before entering, especially if you intend to explore every wing.

How to enter

There are two main routes.

From Ramazith’s Tower

The tower route sends only the character who presses the button into the vault. The vault portal does not provide a normal route back to the tower, so players should treat entry as a one-way transition unless they are happy returning through the shop.

From Sorcerous Sundries

  1. 01
    Enter Tolna’s office.
  2. 02
Open the office door with the key or a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.
  3. 03
    Interact with the Clasped Book.
  4. 04
Use the portal to enter the central vault room.

From Ramazith’s Tower

  1. 01
Reach the middle floor of Ramazith’s Tower.
  2. 02
Reveal the invisible Weave Buttons with See Invisibility.
  3. 03
    Press the button marked Vault.

Central portal room

The central room contains bookcases, scroll stacks and metal crates.

From here, the vault divides into northern and southern sections.

---

Northern vault

A hidden button opens a section of wall north of the portal room. A passive DC 15 Perception check can reveal it.

The Peculiar Lamp and Yafeu

The Peculiar Lamp is mentioned in a note inside Tolna’s office. It is dangerous because interacting with it swaps the character with the creature trapped inside.

The lamp initially contains Yafeu, a djinni. The first character who interacts with it becomes trapped inside. The lamp contains gold, potions, valuables, camp supplies and Yafeu’s diary. When freed, Yafeu warns the party about the lamp and can provide 1,000 gold as compensation. Killing him grants experience but does not provide useful equipment.

A summoned creature can be used to interact with or manipulate the lamp, allowing the party to avoid trapping a valuable party member. The lamp interaction is one of the vault’s most memorable secrets, so players should avoid clicking it casually with their main character unless they are prepared for the swap.

The Red Knight’s Final Strategem

A locked red-glowing display case contains The Red Knight’s Final Strategem. Opening the case requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check.

Reading the book awards the Scroll of Artistry of War, a powerful unique spell scroll based on Magic Missile. A wizard can transcribe it into their spellbook. This is one of the vault’s best rewards for a wizard protagonist or Gale, although any wizard in the party can make use of the transcription opportunity.

---

Southern vault and the teleporting-door puzzle

The southern side contains a locked door marked “Ramazith”. It can be opened with the Sorcerous Sundries Mystery Door Key, found in the lower floor of Ramazith’s Tower, or with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check.

Beyond it is the main puzzle section. The rooms are filled with:

See Invisibility is strongly recommended. Each room has an invisible lever that disables its traps. The party can also use the spell Knock to open doors that cannot be lockpicked.

Intended route

The Elminster and Karsus doors are locked until their respective levers are reached.

Route to Karsus

These routes correspond to the destinations described in the puzzle-room layout. The notes The Path to Elminster and The Path to Karsus found in the shop provide the in-game clues.

---

Route to Elminster

  1. 01
    Silverhand
  2. 02
    Evocation
  3. 03
    Wish

Route to Karsus

  1. 01
    Silverhand
  2. 02
    Abjuration
  3. 03
    Demon
  4. 04
    Silver

Elminster vault

The Elminster section contains The Tharchiate Codex in a locked display case. Opening the case requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check.

Reading the Codex has a permanent cost and reward:

The Codex is also required to complete the relevant stage of Unlock the Ancient Tome if the party is trying to finish reading the Necromancy of Thay. The correct vault route is Silverhand, Evocation, then Wish.

Elminster vault: steps

  1. 01
The reader gains the Tharchiate Withering curse.
  2. 02
    Remove Curse removes the curse.
  3. 03
After removal, the character gains the permanent Tharchiate Vigour buff.

Karsus vault

The Karsus section contains lore and equipment connected with Karsus and the Crown of Karsus.

Reading The Annals of Karsus is especially important for Gale. If Gale is present, he has unique dialogue and reacts strongly to the book’s account of Karsus, the Crown and the attempt to seize divine power. If another character reads it first, Gale can ask to inspect it afterwards. Refusing him repeatedly has a significant approval penalty.

Notable contents include

Named people outside the building

This directory distinguishes people physically associated with the shop and plaza from characters found in the connected Ramazith’s Tower. Lorroakan, Miklaur and his elemental myrmidons belong to the tower encounter rather than the ordinary shop population.

Aradin

If Aradin survived Act One, he can be found outside the shop attempting to meet Lorroakan. Klank prevents him from entering.

Aradin recognises the party and may ask whether they found the Nightsong. Depending on the conversation, the party can discourage him, deceive him, invite him to camp or allow him to become involved in an attempt to abduct Dame Aylin. This is a major story branch and can have consequences for the party’s relationship with the Nightsong and for a paladin’s oath.

Barsik

Barsik is a cat outside the shop. With Speak with Animals, he reveals himself as a preacher of Sharess. If Baelen Bonecloak died in the Underdark, Barsik can potentially be persuaded to help Derryth Bonecloak with her loneliness. If convinced, he later appears at Bonecloak’s Apothecary.

Geezer Loryss

Loryss is a greengrocer behind the building, upset about a ruined cabbage stall. He is a deliberate reference to the cabbage merchant from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Monks receive special dialogue with him.

Although Loryss has a trader table containing cabbages, he is not a functional merchant in normal play. This is scenery and character flavour rather than a shop service.

---

Find the Nightsong

Sorcerous Sundries is the public starting point for Lorroakan’s contract to find the Nightsong. The shop contains his projection, while the actual confrontation takes place in Ramazith’s Tower.

The decisive battle occurs in Ramazith’s Tower rather than the shop. Supporting Dame Aylin allows her and Isobel to contribute to Gather Your Allies. Supporting Lorroakan grants 5,000 gold and his aid in the final battle, although this choice has severe consequences for Dame Aylin and the wider story.

The Wizard of Waterdeep

The vault’s Karsus material is central to Gale’s personal quest. Gale’s reaction to The Annals of Karsus can alter how he views the Crown of Karsus and his own ambitions.

If Gale is in the party, consider letting him interact with the book himself. This produces unique dialogue and avoids missing one of the most important companion moments in the location.

Unlock the Ancient Tome

The Sorcerous Vault contains The Tharchiate Codex, which is needed to finish reading the Necromancy of Thay.

The Codex’s curse is not a bug or optional flavour effect. It is the intended price for obtaining the permanent buff.

Preparation checklist

---

Sorcerous Sundries uses both conventional and magical security.

Ramazith’s Tower security

Although the tower is a separate area, its security systems matter because players usually enter it through Sorcerous Sundries. The tower contains invisible Arcane Cannons, Cloudkill vents, Arcane Barriers and magical levers protecting Markoheshkir and Robe of the Weave. See Invisibility is useful there as well.

---

Named subareas and connected areas

Named staff and story characters

Notable equipment and rewards

Unique spell scrolls

---

Sorcerous Sundries is a particularly dense example of Baldur’s Gate 3’s use of environmental storytelling. The ordinary shop shelves, dramatic elemental displays and eccentric patrons create the impression of a functioning magical business, while the vault reveals the far darker and more dangerous nature of Lorroakan’s collection.

Geezer Loryss is a direct reference to the cabbage merchant from Avatar: The Last Airbender. The joke is reinforced by his ruined cabbage stall and special Monk dialogue. The shop also contains the Hat of the Sharp Caster, which has an unusual connection with Tara’s trading sequence at the Devil’s Fee. In versions where the item is present on the shop awning, players can use Telekinesis or an Arrow of Roaring Thunder to retrieve it.

---

Is Ramazith’s Tower part of Sorcerous Sundries?

No. It is directly connected through a portal, but it is a distinct location with its own floors, security systems, boss encounter and loot. The Sorcerous Vault is more reasonably treated as part of the Sorcerous Sundries complex because it is the shop’s concealed storage area and can be entered directly from Tolna’s office.

How do I enter the vault?

Open Tolna’s office, then interact with the Clasped Book in the bookcase. The office can be opened with Tolna’s key or a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check. You can also enter through the Vault Weave Button in Ramazith’s Tower.

What is the correct vault puzzle route?

Silverhand → Evocation → Wish

Silverhand → Abjuration → Demon → Silver

Can I get the Tharchiate Codex without being cursed?

No. Reading the Codex applies Tharchiate Withering to the first character who interacts with it. Remove the curse afterwards to receive Tharchiate Vigour.

What is the best loot in Sorcerous Sundries itself?

The most distinctive shop and vault rewards are the Scroll of Artistry of War, Scroll of Bestial Communion, The Tharchiate Codex, The Annals of Karsus, Foebreaker and Pyroquickness Hat. Markoheshkir and Robe of the Weave are in connected Ramazith’s Tower, not in the shop or vault proper.

Can I fight Lorroakan inside the shop?

The major confrontation takes place in Ramazith’s Tower. Sorcerous Sundries provides the route and story setup, while the tower contains the actual battle and its outcome.
