Key takeaways

  • The Ancient Lair is reached from the Lower City Sewers, through the Undercity Ruins.
  • Its warning inscription, “Those who draw breath, embrace death”, is a practical clue: expect the undead to awaken when living characters disturb the tomb.
  • Opening a chest, looting an undead body or opening the workshop entrance triggers the main ambush.
  • The ambush applies Spell Rot, which damages characters whenever they cast spell-slot spells.
  • The workshop contains Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Brain, Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Liver and the book Funerary Jar Form and Function.
  • The workshop’s book reveals that Mystic Carrion’s heart is hidden inside Thrumbo, but destroying the heart is a separate step from destroying the jars.
  • Astarion can potentially loot the area without triggering the undead ambush, although each interaction requires a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw.

About this guide

Spoilers: This guide covers Act Three, Mystic Carrion, Thrumbo, the Ancient Lair’s undead ambush, and the consequences of destroying Mystic Carrion’s canopic jars.

Overview

The Ancient Lair is a small but unusually dangerous Act Three location in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a sealed crypt beneath the Undercity, belonging to Mystic Carrion, the undead merchant and mummy lord encountered in Philgrave’s Mansion. Although the lair occupies only a short side route from the Undercity Ruins, it is not merely a treasure room. It is a required investigation site for the End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality quest, contains evidence about Carrion’s hidden organs, and provides one of the safest ways to weaken him before the final confrontation.

The Ancient Lair is part of the Undercity, not a section of Philgrave’s Mansion, the Lower City graveyard, the Murder Tribunal or the Bhaal Temple. Those locations are related through quests and routes, but they remain separate areas.

The location consists of three connected parts

  1. 01
A small antechamber at the entrance.
  2. 02
A large grand tomb containing the visible treasure and undead guardians.
  3. 03
A concealed workshop containing two of Mystic Carrion’s canopic jars and the information needed to find his heart.

Relationship to the Undercity

The Ancient Lair is a distinct location inside the broader Undercity region. The route begins in the Lower City Sewers and enters the Undercity Ruins. From the Undercity Ruins waypoint, travel west into a short side corridor. At approximately X: -180, Y: 935, the passage changes into a separate location and leads into the Ancient Lair.

The Undercity Ruins are themselves a large cavernous area beneath Baldur’s Gate. They connect the sewer network to the Bhaal Temple and the Morphic Pool, and are also the setting for the Bhaalist ambush at Manslaughter Chasm. The Ancient Lair is a side area rather than part of that main route.

Nearby but separate locations

Philgrave’s Mansion is particularly important because it is where the party first meets Mystic Carrion, can learn about the Ancient Lair and may acquire the key that opens its entrance. The mansion’s basement contains A Mummy’s Memories, which progresses the Mystic Carrion quest and marks the Ancient Lair on the map.

Nearby but separate locations

Route from the Undercity Ruins

The Ancient Lair has no separate waypoint. The nearest fast-travel point is Undercity Ruins, approximately at X: -140, Y: 940.

Route from the Undercity Ruins: steps

  1. 01
    Enter the Lower City Sewers.
  2. 02
Travel north into the Undercity Ruins.
  3. 03
Activate or use the Undercity Ruins waypoint.
  4. 04
    Move west from the waypoint.
  5. 05
Follow the short side corridor into the Ancient Lair.

Opening the entrance

The entrance can be opened using the Rusty Key, which is carried by Mystic Carrion in Philgrave’s Mansion. The key is a story item and specifically unlocks the Ancient Lair door.

The area can also be reached through the quest chain without relying entirely on the key. Reading A Mummy’s Memories in Philgrave’s Mansion’s basement reveals the location and advances the relevant quest. Depending on the party’s choices and investigation order, the entrance may become accessible through the quest state rather than a straightforward key interaction.

Suggested preparation

The Ancient Lair is not a good place to begin a fight while every character is dependent on high-level spellcasting. Spell Rot punishes repeated use of spell-slot spells, and the curse is active during the undead encounter.

Note

“Those who draw breath, embrace death.”

Entrance antechamber

The antechamber is a small, quiet room containing the remains of adventurers who appear to have attempted to loot the crypt. Three bodies are in the entrance area, with a fourth corpse in the workshop. These bodies do not respond to Speak with Dead.

A tombstone rests against the wall at approximately X: -1368, Y: 63. Its inscription reads:

The inscription is both atmosphere and warning. Once the tomb’s protections are disturbed, the dead rise and the living party is afflicted with Spell Rot.

Named entries: entrance antechamber

The named corpse Taron is listed among the location’s characters and is deceased but available for Speak with Dead. The other adventurer corpses do not provide the same interaction.

Grand tomb

The grand tomb is the Ancient Lair’s main chamber. A stone platform stands in the centre, surrounded by four pillars. The north-western pillar has been broken, leaving a climbable socle. This broken section is important because characters standing on it do not suffer from Spell Rot while they remain on top of the slab.

At the centre of the platform is an open stone sarcophagus containing the Breaching Pikestaff.

A hidden wall section is located at approximately X: -1389, Y: 72. A DC 10 Perception check can reveal it, and opening it requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check. The wall leads into Mystic Carrion’s workshop.

Treasure in the tomb

The visible chests are generally not locked or trapped. They can contain gold ranging from several dozen to several hundred pieces. The treasure crates near the hidden wall may contain a random precious gem, while the westernmost chest contains alchemical ingredients. Several destroyed chests are scenery and do not have loose loot scattered around them.

Mystic Carrion’s workshop

The workshop is a concealed laboratory behind the locked wall in the grand tomb. It is the most important part of the location for the Mystic Carrion quest.

A chopped-up body lies on a table, with the Jar of Mystic Carrion’s Brain among the remains. A dead half-elf lies behind the table and can be questioned with Speak with Dead.

A locked Gilded Chest requires a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check. It contains:

A nearby stone tablet titled Funerary Jar Form and Function explains that Mystic Carrion hid his heart inside the body of his runaway servant, Thrumbo. Reading it advances End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality and provides the crucial lead for the next stage of the quest.

Upper return passage

A ladder north of the workshop leads to a small chamber containing a lever at approximately X: -155, Y: 949. Pulling the lever opens a movable wall that leads back into the Undercity Ruins. The wall cannot be opened from the outside, so activating the lever creates a useful one-way shortcut.

The exit opens behind Bareki. This positioning gives the party an opportunity to steal Sarin’s Skull from a red-outlined pouch while avoiding or bypassing the normal approach.

Story-associated characters

Mystic Carrion does not normally reside in the Ancient Lair during the party’s exploration. His current base is Philgrave’s Mansion, where he can act as a trader and quest-giver. The Ancient Lair remains his old crypt and workshop.

The most relevant named entries connected to the location are:

Thrumbo is not normally a resident of the Ancient Lair. He belongs to the wider Mystic Carrion servant quest and is found elsewhere in the Lower City.

Ordinary NPCs

The Ancient Lair contains no ordinary living residents, merchants, guards or service providers. Its apparent inhabitants are undead creatures and corpses associated with Mystic Carrion’s crypt.

Creatures

These creatures are initially presented as corpses or inactive remains. They become hostile when the tomb’s trigger is activated.

The Ancient Servants are the most dangerous enemies because of their combination of Dreadful Glare and Rotting Fist. Crawling Claws are individually weak, with four hit points on most difficulties and five on Tactician, but their numbers make them useful targets for effects such as Elixir of Bloodlust.

---

What triggers the ambush

The undead rise when the party does any of the following:

When the trigger occurs, the corpses resurrect and become hostile. The entrance door closes and locks, forcing the party to remain in the tomb unless someone succeeds on a DC 20 Sleight of Hand check. The party is not automatically Surprised, so combat begins normally.

Spell Rot

Living party members are afflicted with Spell Rot during the encounter. The curse causes a character to take 2d6 necrotic damage per spell level whenever they cast a spell requiring a spell slot.

Spell Rot can be temporarily removed, but it returns after three combat rounds. It is permanently lifted when the party leaves the lair. Characters standing on the broken pillar’s stone slab are exempt while they remain there.

Astarion’s special interaction

Astarion can sometimes interact with the Ancient Lair’s loot without waking the undead. The trap is designed to treat the lair’s master as an undead presence, and Astarion can exploit this through his own undead nature.

Each relevant interaction requires a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw. On a successful save, he can loot a chest or attempt to open the workshop without disturbing the guardians. Astarion is also unaffected by Spell Rot. This can make him useful for reconnaissance and selective looting, although it is not a guaranteed solution.

Use the ladder and pull the lever to open the return route.
  14. 14
    Leave through the Undercity Ruins.

Stealthier route with Astarion

This method is useful for obtaining specific items, but failing a saving throw can still begin the encounter. It is safer to save before attempting it.

---

The Ancient Lair is essential for understanding how Mystic Carrion survives death. His immortality is distributed through several organs stored in canopic jars or hidden in related locations.

The heart is not in the Ancient Lair. Funerary Jar Form and Function reveals that it is inside Thrumbo. The lungs are also outside the lair, in the mortuary cellar of the Lower City graveyard. The game therefore spreads the quest across the Ancient Lair, Thrumbo’s storyline and the graveyard.

Stealthier route with Astarion: steps

  1. 01
    Bring Astarion into the tomb.
  2. 02
Separate him from the party if necessary.
  3. 03
Attempt to open the hidden wall or interact with selected chests.
  4. 04
Make the DC 20 Wisdom saving throw for each relevant interaction.
  5. 05
If successful, loot the object without awakening the undead.
  6. 06
Avoid assuming that one successful roll protects every later interaction.
  7. 07
Use the route behind Bareki to access the Undercity side of the area if you need to approach Sarin’s Skull.

Destroying the jars

Destroying a canopic jar removes one of Mystic Carrion’s combat advantages. However, each jar explodes for 8d6 fire damage when destroyed. The safest approach is to move the jars away from characters and other objects, group them together if desired, and destroy them with a ranged attack from a safe distance.

Destroying the heart is the important step for preventing Mystic Carrion from resurrecting after a long rest. Destroying the other jars weakens him but is not, by itself, enough to prevent his return.

---

Variable loot

The Ancient Lair does not function as a shop, camp, checkpoint or service location. Its rewards are treasure, quest evidence and access to the Mystic Carrion quest’s progression.

---

The warning inscription

The tombstone’s wording is an unusually direct warning. It does not prevent the ambush, but it tells the player that the crypt is hostile to living intruders. Reading it before looting also gives a natural place to pause and prepare.

The broken pillar

The north-western pillar is both a navigation feature and a mechanical refuge. Characters standing on its remaining slab do not suffer Spell Rot while they remain there. This makes it useful for a character who needs to maintain concentration or cast an occasional spell during the battle.

The movable return wall

The upper lever creates a route back to the Undercity Ruins. Opening it can also allow the party to approach Bareki from behind and take Sarin’s Skull quietly from his pouch. This is a positioning opportunity rather than a separate quest area.

Canopic jar explosions

The jars are not harmless quest objects. Destroying one causes a substantial fire explosion, so do not attack them while standing beside the rest of the party. They can also be used offensively if enemies are close enough, although the risk of collateral damage is high.

Before leaving the Ancient Lair, confirm that you have:

---

Is the Ancient Lair part of Philgrave’s Mansion?

No. Philgrave’s Mansion is the location where Mystic Carrion lives and trades. The Ancient Lair is a separate Act Three location beneath the Undercity, reached through the Undercity Ruins. Philgrave’s Mansion provides quest information and, in some routes, the Rusty Key.

Can I loot the chests without fighting?

Possibly. Astarion can attempt the relevant interactions with a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw and may avoid awakening the undead. For other characters, opening a chest, looting an undead body or opening the workshop normally triggers the ambush.

Does destroying the jars kill Mystic Carrion permanently?

No. Destroying the jars removes some of his advantages, but his heart must be destroyed to prevent resurrection after a long rest. The heart is hidden inside Thrumbo, not in the Ancient Lair.

How do I remove Spell Rot?

It disappears when the party leaves the Ancient Lair. It can also be temporarily removed during the encounter, but the curse returns after three combat rounds. Standing on the broken pillar’s slab prevents the curse while the character remains there.

Is there a waypoint inside?

No. The nearest waypoint is Undercity Ruins, located just outside the side route to the Ancient Lair.
