About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers major Act Three story events, the Murder Tribunal, the Bhaal Temple, Orin the Red, the Dark Urge, the Morphic Pool and the endgame point of no return.

Overview

The Undercity Ruins are the northernmost section of the Undercity beneath Baldur’s Gate in Baldur’s Gate 3. They are not the same thing as the whole Lower City Sewers, and they should not be treated as a synonym for the broader Undercity. The ruins begin beyond the northern stone archway in the sewers and contain several connected areas: the entry chamber, the Ancient Lair, Manslaughter Chasm, the stairway towards the Bhaal Temple, and the Morphic Pool Docks. The Bhaal Temple and Morphic Pool are directly connected to the ruins, but remain distinct named locations in the game’s location hierarchy.

This is one of Act Three’s most important underground regions. It provides a route to Orin’s stronghold, contains an essential piece of the Find Dribbles the Clown quest, hides several Bhaalist collectibles and optional loot, and acts as the final staging area before the Netherbrain sequence. It is also where the Dark Urge’s relationship with Bhaal reaches its decisive turning point.

Reaching the ruins

The sewers have multiple entrances, including routes through the Basilisk Gate Barracks, Elfsong Tavern, Flymm Cargo, the Guildhall, Lady Jannath’s Estate and Cazador’s Dungeon. These entrances belong to the wider sewer system, not to the ruins themselves.

The reliable route is

  1. 01
Enter the Lower City Sewers from any suitable Lower City entrance.
  2. 02
Travel north through the sewer network.
  3. 03
Find the stone archway near the Undercity Ruins waypoint.
  4. 04
Pass through it to trigger the location change to Undercity Ruins.

Opening the first stone door

The entry area contains the Undercity Ruins waypoint and a western passage leading towards the Ancient Lair. The route into Manslaughter Chasm is blocked by a magical stone door. It cannot be opened by ordinary lockpicking, but the following methods work:

The corpse method is particularly useful if you have not yet completed the Murder Tribunal route and do not possess the amulet.

Suggested exploration order

For a thorough but efficient visit

  1. 01
    Activate the Undercity Ruins waypoint.
  2. 02
Speak to or trade with Voiceless Penitent Bareki.
  3. 03
Collect Sarin’s Skull from the pouch behind Bareki.
  4. 04
Explore the Ancient Lair before advancing the main Bhaal route.
  5. 05
Open the stone door and prepare for the ambush at Manslaughter Chasm.
  6. 06
Reveal and loot Strangler Luke before killing Ghislev.
  7. 07
Search the ruined buildings and chests around the chasm.
  8. 08
Descend the stairway and collect Dribbles’ head.
  9. 09
Decide whether to visit the Bhaal Temple or the Morphic Pool Docks first.
  10. 10
Do not take the skiff into the Morphic Pool until all remaining Act Three preparations are complete.

Entry Area

The Entry Area is the northern terminus of the Lower City Sewers and the first part of the ruins proper. The local waypoint is immediately beyond the archway. To the west is the Ancient Lair passage, while the main route is sealed by the magical stone door.

Important entries

Bareki is a trader who sells alchemical ingredients and several named items, including the Armour of Moonbasking and Bonespike Helmet. Sarin’s Skull is in a pouch behind him and can be taken from the area.

Ancient Lair

The Ancient Lair is a side location reached through the short western corridor beside the waypoint. It belongs to Mystic Carrion, the mummy lord encountered in the Lower City, and is required for the quest involving his immortality. The location includes an antechamber, grand tomb and workshop.

The tomb contains the Breaching Pikestaff, large quantities of gold and assorted loot. Looting the tomb or opening the workshop normally awakens the undead occupants and inflicts Spell Rot on living party members. Spell Rot deals necrotic damage whenever an affected character casts a spell using a spell slot. The curse is removed on leaving the lair, and characters standing on the broken north-western pillar are protected from it while they remain there.

Destroying Mystic Carrion’s jars weakens him, but the jars explode when destroyed. His heart, found through the Thrumbo-related quest, is the critical object for preventing his resurrection after a long rest.

Manslaughter Chasm

Beyond the stone door lies the largest open section of the ruins. A deep chasm divides the cavern, crossed by a narrow bridge. The area contains ruined buildings, cliffs, scattered chests and a staged Bhaalist ambush.

The corpse of Reaper of Bhaal Justen lies near the entrance, beside a note warning that the Farslayer will test those seeking the temple. The ambush is led by Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev. A passive Perception check can reveal danger shortly before the encounter, but the confrontation begins regardless of whether the check succeeds.

The Ghislev encounter

Ghislev’s ritual controls the route through the ruins. While he is chanting, the door onward is protected by Bhaalist magic and cannot be lockpicked. If you avoid triggering the ritual, the door remains open, giving you more freedom to explore before the fight fully develops. Once the battle begins, additional Bhaalists join from deeper in the ruins.

The most important loot consideration is Strangler Luke. He must be revealed, killed and looted before Ghislev is defeated. If Ghislev dies first, Luke’s body disappears with the other encounter corpses and the Bonespike Gloves are lost for that playthrough.

Ruined building

The ruined building on the far side can be entered by crossing the bridge or by opening a locked gate. The gate requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check, or the Silver Key found on a covered crate nearby. Its upper floor contains a corpse labelled Unholy Diversions and a rustic chest.

Most chest contents in this part of the ruins are randomised from categories such as gold, alchemical ingredients, valuables, potions and rare or very rare spell scrolls. They should not be treated as fixed named rewards.

The Stairway

The Stairway descends through ruined rooms towards the Bhaal Temple approach. Several Whispering Statues line the route and recite sections of Bhaalspawn prophecy. The path branches, but the routes eventually converge at the broad bridge leading to the temple.

The most important fixed discovery is the murder tableau near Wilting Alex. His corpse contains Dribbles’ head, one of the body parts required by Find Dribbles the Clown. The tableau depicts Amelyssan and the Five, making it a piece of visual continuity with the earlier Baldur’s Gate games.

The corpses in this scene rest on Blast Mines. Each mine requires a DC 15 Perception check to spot, and triggering one can cause a chain explosion. Search carefully before moving corpses, looting the area or walking directly through the centre of the tableau.

The six Grimlark verses are distributed through the ruins:

These are written by Invoker of Bhaal Grimlark, whose other murder poetry appears elsewhere in the Undercity.

Bhaal Temple approach

The approach begins at the Temple of Bhaal waypoint and continues across a bridge towards the temple doors. The bridge contains Marble Plates and Sanguine Vents. Triggering them produces Unstable Blood, and nearby candles can ignite the surface. The traps require DC 15 Perception checks to spot.

The temple doors remain locked until Ghislev is defeated. Afterward, they require the Amulet of Bhaal. A Dark Urge character can enter without the amulet because Sceleritas Fel opens the doors after a short exchange. The temple contains Orin the Red and is central to Get Orin’s Netherstone.

Opening the doors may grant background-specific inspiration, including:

The Dark Urge’s choice inside the temple determines whether they embrace or reject their Bhaalspawn legacy. If they embrace it, Jaheira, Minsc and a group of Harpers confront the party when it leaves the temple. This encounter is conditional on the Dark Urge origin and the choice made inside the temple.

---

Morphic Pool Docks

The Morphic Pool Docks are reached by taking the northern branch from the Stairway. The route passes through a ruined building containing a campfire and descends towards a broken pier system. The area has its own waypoint, Morphic Pool Dock.

The Cranium Rats become temporarily hostile if the party approaches the dock before obtaining all three Netherstones. The Emperor comments on their presence and reminds the party to collect the stones first.

Point of no return

Taking the skiff into the Morphic Pool begins the final sequence of Act Three. Once the party enters, it cannot return to camp, rest, change party members, access stored equipment or respec through Withers. This is the most important progression warning in the entire region.

Before boarding the skiff, complete as many of the following as possible:

---

The ruins have few ordinary residents. They are primarily occupied by Bhaal cultists, temporary hostile groups, traders and story-triggered characters.

Traders and non-hostile figures

Bareki’s presence makes the entry area a useful resupply stop, especially for alchemical ingredients and Bhaal-themed equipment. Minthara’s dialogue is conditional on her being in the party and the player character romancing her; her conversation concerns revenge against Orin and can lead to a relationship decision depending on approval.

Conditional Harpers

If the Dark Urge accepts their Bhaalspawn legacy, the party can be confronted after leaving the temple by:

These characters do not form a permanent population of the ruins. Their appearance is a conditional story encounter tied to the Dark Urge route.

---

Enemies

The Ancient Lair’s undead are separate from the Bhaalist encounter and are activated by looting or opening certain objects. The ruins proper are dominated by Bhaalists, with the Ghislev encounter acting as the main combat set piece.

Get Orin’s Netherstone

The ruins are the route to the Bhaal Temple, where Orin the Red holds one of the Netherstones. Access normally involves dealing with the Murder Tribunal, obtaining the Amulet of Bhaal and defeating Ghislev before opening the temple doors.

Impress the Murder Tribunal

This quest takes place elsewhere in the Undercity, but its outcome can provide the route or item needed to pass the ruins’ magical door. The Murder Tribunal is therefore a neighbouring progression point, not a subarea of the Undercity Ruins.

Investigate the Murders

This quest chain is connected to the Bhaalist plot and can lead towards the Murder Tribunal. It should be distinguished from the ruins themselves, which contain the temple approach and cult stronghold but not the Tribunal chamber.

Find Dribbles the Clown

The ruins contain Dribbles’ head, carried by Wilting Alex. This is a fixed collectible rather than a random chest reward. The clown quest cannot be completed without gaining access to this part of the ruins.

The Urge

For a Dark Urge character, the Bhaal Temple and the route through the ruins form the centre of the origin story’s Act Three resolution. The consequences differ depending on whether the character accepts or rejects Bhaal’s legacy.

End Mystic Carrion’s Immortality

This quest requires the Ancient Lair. Search the tomb and workshop, learn about the canopic jars and follow the Thrumbo-related lead to deal with Mystic Carrion permanently.

Confront the Elder Brain

The Morphic Pool Docks are the final preparation area before entering the Morphic Pool and proceeding towards the endgame. Entering the pool locks the party into the final progression state for Act Three.

Before leaving the ruins, confirm that you have:

---

Is the Lower City Sewers the same as Undercity Ruins?

No. The Lower City Sewers are the larger network south of the ruins. The Undercity Ruins begin beyond the northern stone archway and contain the route to the Bhaal Temple and Morphic Pool.

Can I lockpick the first door?

No. The magical stone door cannot be opened by ordinary lockpicking. Use the hanging corpses, Amulet of Bhaal, Knock or the Murder Tribunal route.

Where is Dribbles’ head?

It is on the corpse of Wilting Alex beside the mined murder tableau on the Stairway route.

Can I miss the Bonespike Gloves?

Yes. Reveal, kill and loot Strangler Luke before defeating Ghislev. His corpse can disappear when the encounter ends.

Do I have to complete the Murder Tribunal first?

No. The Tribunal route is one way to obtain access, but the ruins’ door can also be opened with the Amulet of Bhaal, Knock or the hanging-corpse method.

When should I enter the Morphic Pool?

Only after completing the Act Three content you still want to do. Entering it prevents returning to camp, changing party members, accessing stored gear or respecing.

Is the Ancient Lair part of the ruins?

It is a distinct named location connected directly to the Undercity Ruins beside the waypoint. For exploration purposes, it is best treated as a subarea of the same underground complex, but not as the same map label.
