About this guide
Base game, Act Three. Major spoilers for the House of Grief, Shadowheart’s personal quest and the Viconia DeVir encounter.
Overview
Mapping of the Heart is a Sharran interrogation ritual in Baldur’s Gate 3. It takes place in the Mapping Room of the House of Grief, the public-facing building that conceals the Cloister of Sombre Embrace, a major Sharran stronghold beneath Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City.
Although the ritual is presented as a form of spiritual counselling, the Inquisitor of Grief is effectively probing the chosen character’s thoughts and emotional weaknesses. The answers determine a hidden heartform, which later allows Viconia DeVir to use specialised abilities against that character during the battle beneath the House of Grief.
The ritual is also part of Investigate the House of Grief, and it can change substantially depending on whether Shadowheart is present, whether she remained loyal to Shar or rejected her, and whether the player chooses to bypass the rite entirely.

What “Mapping of the Heart” includes
The name refers specifically to the ritual interaction begun by sitting on the stone bench in the House of Grief’s Mapping Room. It is not the name of the whole House of Grief, the Cloister, or the surrounding Lower City district.
For navigation and quest purposes, the relevant hierarchy is:
The Cloister is a separate subarea beneath the House of Grief. It contains the main Sharran stronghold, training areas, quarters, the Chamber of Loss and Viconia’s audience area. The ritual provides one route into this wider location but is not itself the entire underground complex.

Finding the House of Grief
The House of Grief lies in the western part of the Lower City. Its approach includes a bridge and the NPC Lug, who sings nearby. The building is presented as a place where visitors can be relieved of emotional burdens, but it is actually the public cover for the Sharran organisation operating below.
Suggested route
---
Suggested route
- 01Enter the Lower City.
- 02Travel towards the western side of the district.
- 03Cross the bridge near Lug.
- 04Enter the House of Grief.
- 05Speak with Mirie, the Attendant of Grief.
- 06Accept the proposed “Unburdening”, or use one of the alternative access methods described below.
- 07Enter the Mapping Room.
- 08Decide which party member will sit on the stone bench.
Gaining access to the Mapping Room
With Shadowheart present
If Shadowheart is in the active party, Mirie allows the group into the Mapping Room without charging the normal fee. Shadowheart’s Act Two allegiance affects the tone of the conversation, but her presence is the most straightforward way to reach the ritual.
If another party member attempts to sit first, Shadowheart can object and ask to undergo the rite herself. Refusing her can cause disapproval, so decide in advance who is meant to take the ritual.
Without Shadowheart
Mirie normally asks for 1,000 gold before escorting the party to the back room. The price is for the House of Grief’s supposed unburdening service, of which Mapping of the Heart is described as the first stage.
The doors to the Mapping Room can also be opened by:
Bypassing the ritual
A passive or active DC 20 Investigation check near the wall opposite the bench can reveal a concealed button. Activating it opens the movable brick wall leading towards the Cloister of Sombre Embrace.
The button can also become visible after initiating combat with at least three Sharrans in the surface part of the House of Grief. Killing Mirie and her guards reveals it automatically, but doing so makes the Cloister permanently hostile.
Practical recommendation
If you want the full Shadowheart dialogue, approval reactions and role-playing context, bring Shadowheart and let her sit on the bench. If you want to avoid giving Viconia access to a mapped character during the boss fight, bypass the ritual with Investigation or enter the fight with the mapped character left at camp.
---
Who can undergo Mapping of the Heart?
The first character who sits on the bench becomes the mapped subject. Only one character can undergo the ordinary ritual in a playthrough.
Shadowheart is the exception. If she sits on the bench, the scene becomes a unique interaction tied to her history with Shar, Viconia and the Mysterious Artefact. She receives the special Wayward Heart treatment rather than one of the ordinary six heartforms.
What the Inquisitor is doing
The Inquisitor asks emotionally probing questions and uses magical means to examine the subject’s thoughts. A successful Perception check can reveal that the questioning involves Detect Thoughts rather than a harmless therapeutic interview. The ritual is therefore closer to magical interrogation than genuine healing.
The dialogue choices accumulate hidden values associated with different heartforms. The final result is not simply a cosmetic label. It changes the curse and follow-up fear effect Viconia can use against the mapped target.
---
The questions are presented in a fixed sequence. The following table summarises the documented choices and their hidden tendencies.
Question 1: “What last caused you to shed a tear?”
A Perception check occurs before the next question. If successful, the character can cut the mapping short and have the heartform generated from the answers given so far.
Question 1: “What last caused you to shed a tear?”
| Answer | Heartform tendencies |
|---|---|
| Grief | Craven -1 |
| Loneliness | False -1, Craven -1, Violent +1 |
| A wound | Melancholy +2 |
| An onion | Craven +1, False +2 |
| A beautiful sunset | Jealous +1, Violent +2 |
| Never happened | False +2 |
Question 2: “What is your unspoken desire?”
| Answer | Heartform tendencies |
|---|---|
| To run away from it all | Violent -1, Craven +2 |
| To indulge every hunger, every lust | Melancholy +2, False -1, Jealous +2 |
Question 3: “How would you feel, if all your burdens were lifted?”
The ritual’s results and hidden values are documented in the dedicated Mapping of the Heart entry.
---
Question 3: “How would you feel, if all your burdens were lifted?”
| Answer | Heartform tendencies |
|---|---|
| I would be happy | Melancholy +1, False -1, Craven -1 |
| I would be restless | Melancholy +2, Violent +1, Prying +1 |
| I would be suspicious | Violent -1, False +2 |
| I would manifest new burdens within a tenday | Jealous +1, Melancholy +2, Prying +1 |
| I would be lesser, my burdens moulded me | Melancholy +1, Violent +1 |
| I would be grateful to the gods | Craven +2 |
Craven Heart
Craven Heart reflects a character who avoids hard choices and retreats from danger. In the later battle, Viconia’s curse is designed around cowardice and reluctance to fight.
False Heart
False Heart represents deception, concealment and self-denial. It is one of the possible outcomes for characters who answer in ways associated with hiding or denying the truth.
Jealous Heart
Jealous Heart is associated with envy and insatiable wants. Its dialogue presentation describes the subject as someone who sees others as undeserving of what they possess.
Melancholy Heart
Melancholy Heart reflects sadness, emotional heaviness and the inability to accept happiness easily. It is one of the easier results to reach through answers focused on grief, restlessness or the belief that burdens define the self.
Prying Heart
Prying Heart is associated with curiosity about other people’s secrets and an outward focus on the lives of others. It can be favoured by answers involving restlessness or repeatedly taking on new burdens.
Violent Heart
Violent Heart represents anger and bloodlust. Several answers involving rage, beautiful sunsets or a desire to escape can move the hidden total towards this result.
Wayward Heart
Wayward Heart is unique to Shadowheart’s special interaction. It is not one of the standard results and is associated with her conflict over Shar, her lost memories and her changing identity.
---
Castigate Heartform
If the mapping is completed, Viconia begins the later confrontation with access to Castigate Heartform. It curses the mapped character with a condition based on the heartform generated by the ritual. The spell is a bonus action with a range of 18 metres and can be used once per combat.
The curse remains particularly dangerous because it also enables Viconia to use Mapped Terror against the same target.
Mapped Terror
Mapped Terror is determined by the character’s answer concerning their greatest fear. Its exact form can vary. Documented versions include:
The effects can include Frightened, Blinding Sickness, Flesh Rot, loss of control, domination or transformation of Viconia and nearby Sharrans. Betrayal, for example, can dominate one of the target’s allies while frightening the mapped character if they are close enough.
Particularly dangerous result: Ceremorphosis
Mapped Terror: Ceremorphosis can effectively lock a character out of meaningful actions for a period of the fight. This makes the choice of mapped character important, especially if the character is your main healer, controller or damage dealer.
Shadowheart’s wolf outcome
When Shadowheart undergoes the special version of the ritual, Viconia can use Mapped Terror: Wolves. Viconia and two nearby Sharrans transform into wolves, with Viconia’s wolf form possessing the stronger Sinister Howl ability.
Avoiding the mapping abilities
Viconia cannot use Castigate Heartform or Mapped Terror if the ritual was not completed. The simplest countermeasures are:
The combat documentation identifies avoiding the mapping altogether, or leaving the mapped character behind, as the most direct solution.
---
Avoiding the mapping abilities: steps
- 01Bypass the ritual with the Investigation check.
- 02Enter the Cloister without mapping anyone.
- 03Leave the mapped character at camp before fighting Viconia.
- 04If Shadowheart was mapped, prepare specifically for the wolf transformation.
- 05Spread the party so Mapped Terror’s secondary effects are less likely to catch multiple characters.
Shadowheart present
When Shadowheart is in the party, Mirie recognises her and changes the conversation accordingly. Shadowheart’s choice between Shar and Selûne in Act Two affects how the Sharrans react, but the rite remains central to her story.
If Shadowheart sits on the bench
- 01The ordinary question sequence is replaced by unique dialogue.
- 02Viconia appears through a projection.
- 03The scene reveals more about Shadowheart’s history and the Mysterious Artefact.
- 04The hidden passage to the Cloister opens.
- 05Shadowheart becomes the subject of the special Wayward Heart interaction.
Shadowheart absent
If the party completes the ordinary mapping without Shadowheart, Viconia reveals herself afterwards and instructs the party to bring Shadowheart to the House of Grief. The Cloister can still be reached, but the party may need to pass the Investigation check to reveal the hidden button.
This route is useful for players who want to inspect the House of Grief first, but it can produce a less complete version of Shadowheart’s story.
Shadowheart’s allegiance
The surface staff’s attitude and several later conversations depend on whether Shadowheart remained loyal to Shar or rejected her. These changes affect dialogue, hostility and the final confrontation, but they do not turn the Mapping Room into a different area or create a separate ritual system.
---
Rites of Loss
Completing Mapping of the Heart grants the Rites of Loss inspiration to party members with the Acolyte background. This is a background inspiration reward rather than a new spell, weapon or permanent combat ability.
Books and heartform lore
Mirie can act as a trader and sells books connected with the different heartforms. The wider House of Grief also contains material explaining the Sharran understanding of emotional states, including The Ways of the Heart: An Introduction, which introduces the concept of heartforms and related writings.
These books are primarily lore and role-playing material. The game does not require the player to read them to complete the ritual or understand its combat consequence.

The following entries belong to the Mapping of the Heart scene or its immediate access area. They are separated from the larger Cloister directory because the Cloister is a distinct subarea.
Mapping Room and House of Grief
The three surface guards are described collectively as Griefguards. Mirie and Morann are specifically named in connection with the room’s access.
Mapping Room and House of Grief
Immediate connected subarea
The Cloister contains a much larger cast of named Sharrans, including Viconia, Nocturne, Arnell Hallowleaf, Emmeline Hallowleaf, Nightmist, Owltalon, Gloommask, Gydd, Hyrald, Lamona, Uttermask, Baxta, Fredrichk, Hendly, Imwise, Bluenail, Dohna, Dollay, Garrigan, Greymask, Humboldt, Monteith and Tylda. These characters belong to the underground Cloister rather than to the ritual proper.

Story-focused route with Shadowheart
This route provides the most Shadowheart-specific context and avoids wasting 1,000 gold.
Story-focused route with Shadowheart: steps
- 01Bring Shadowheart and, if desired, another character with the Acolyte background.
- 02Speak with Mirie.
- 03Enter the Mapping Room without paying.
- 04Let Shadowheart sit on the bench.
- 05Complete the unique dialogue.
- 06Enter the Cloister.
- 07Speak with Nocturne before starting the final confrontation if Shadowheart’s personal quest is active.
- 08Explore the training rooms and connected areas.
- 09Resolve the confrontation with Viconia.
Combat-focused route
This is the safest route if you want to avoid the additional heartform mechanics.
Combat-focused route: steps
- 01Enter the House of Grief.
- 02Pass the Investigation check near the wall opposite the bench.
- 03Open the hidden passage without mapping anyone.
- 04Leave the potential target of Viconia’s heart abilities unmapped.
- 05Prepare for the Cloister battle.
Full-loot route
Do not kill the surface staff casually if you want to preserve a non-hostile route into the Cloister. Killing Mirie and the guards exposes the passage but causes the underground area to become permanently hostile.
---
---
Full-loot route: steps
- 01Enter peacefully where possible.
- 02Inspect the front area and garden.
- 03Speak with Arves and Lug.
- 04Search the Mapping Room before descending.
- 05Open the training rooms in the Cloister.
- 06Read the Sharran books and inspect the training equipment.
- 07Visit Nocturne’s quarters before the main battle.
- 08Only then begin the Viconia confrontation.
Can more than one character undergo the ritual?
No. Only the first character to sit on the bench can undergo the ordinary Mapping of the Heart during a playthrough. Shadowheart has a special version of the scene rather than a normal repeatable mapping.
Does the heartform change the character’s build or personality?
No permanent class, ability-score or personality change is documented. The main mechanical consequence is that Viconia gains a tailored curse and fear attack for the later fight.
Is Mapping of the Heart required to enter the Cloister?
No. A DC 20 Investigation check can reveal the hidden button. Shadowheart’s presence can also provide a straightforward route through the story.
Is the 1,000 gold fee unavoidable?
No. Shadowheart’s presence waives the fee. The party can also bypass the normal process through lockpicking, the Grief Key, investigation or hostile entry.
What is the best character to map?
For the easiest Viconia fight, map nobody. If you want to experience the scene, map a character who is not essential to your first turn of combat, or leave that character at camp when confronting Viconia.
Does Shadowheart receive one of the six normal heartforms?
No. Her scene produces the unique Wayward Heart interaction, which is tied to her relationship with Shar and enables the wolf-related Mapped Terror outcome.

The ritual’s core behaviour is well documented, but some exact dialogue checks, approval changes and combat wording can vary by character, patch and quest state. The available sources clearly establish the room, access routes, heartform categories, inspiration reward and Viconia’s related abilities, but they do not provide a complete verified transcript for every possible companion-specific response.
This guide therefore treats the numbered questions and hidden-value table as the verified general sequence, while avoiding unsupported claims about every possible dialogue variation, approval result or item placement in the wider House of Grief.
