Key takeaways

  • The Ruined Battlefield is the party’s first location in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, whether they arrive from Grymforge or the Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
  • It is a broad eastern region, not just the battlefield beside the river Its named child location is House in Deep Shadows, Oliver’s former home and a major location in Lift the Shadow Curse.
  • Normal light is insufficient once the party crosses into the active Shadow Curse Early protection comes from Isobel’s Blessing of Selûne, a Moonlantern, or the later protection obtained from the pixie in the lantern.
  • The two entry routes lead to different opening encounters The Grymforge route introduces the Harpers, while the Mountain Pass route introduces the Absolute convoy and its goblin patrol.
  • Several encounters are time-sensitive In particular, once Find Rolan in the Shadows has begun, approaching Rolan’s location starts a battle that can result in his death if he is not helped promptly.
  • The area contains some of Act Two’s most useful early equipment, including Frost Prince, Ironwood Club, Shadow-Cloaked Ring, Hammergrim Mist Amulet, Ring of Mental Inhibition, Ring of Shadows and Penumbral Armour.

About this guide

Base-game guide. Act Two spoilers. This article covers the Ruined Battlefield as the eastern half of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, not merely the small area around the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint. It includes the two Act Two entry routes, the House in Deep Shadows, the eastern battlefield ruins, the Absolute convoy camp, the Harper ambush route and the scattered cursed encounters across the region. It does not treat Last Light Inn, Reithwin Town or Moonrise Towers as parts of the Ruined Battlefield, although each borders it or is closely connected to its events.

Overview

The Ruined Battlefield occupies approximately half of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, covering the region’s eastern side. Its western boundary is formed by streams and river channels separating it from Reithwin Town. Last Light Inn lies to the north-west across a small bridge and protected area, while Moonrise Towers stands further south-west on the River Chionthar.

The whole eastern section is labelled Ruined Battlefield on the world map, but the most obvious remains of the historic conflict are concentrated nearer the riverbank. There, players can find abandoned ballistas, catapults, skeletons, rusted armour and weapons. These remains document the battle between Ketheric Thorm’s forces and the combined forces of Selûnite allies, Harpers and druids of the Emerald Grove.

The region is best understood as a large outdoor area containing several distinct pockets:

Some of these are descriptive encounter names rather than fully separate map regions. In particular, Shadowed Battlefield is the regional waypoint and House in Deep Shadows is the named child location. The other names describe identifiable encounter or landmark areas used by guides and the game’s geography.

The following areas are closely connected but should not be folded into the Ruined Battlefield itself:

The Shadow-Cursed Lands is the parent region encompassing both the Ruined Battlefield and Reithwin Town.

Access and routes

From Grymforge

The Grymforge elevator opens into a small antechamber before the cursed surface. The exit is in the northern part of the Ruined Battlefield, nearer Last Light Inn. Shortly after emerging, the party can encounter Harper Lassandra and her scouts. This route therefore naturally introduces the Harpers and can lead towards Last Light Inn.

From the Rosymorn Monastery Trail

The Mountain Pass route enters from the south-east. The party reaches a small clearing and then encounters a patrol connected to the Cult of the Absolute. A Goblin Brawler gives basic instructions, while Bedi, Kansif, Warrior Gronag and other cultists wait at a temporary convoy camp.

This route is the natural approach for the convoy sequence:

The Shadow Curse boundary

The active curse begins slightly beyond both entry points. Crossing into it without suitable protection places the party in turn-based mode and inflicts escalating necrotic damage. If a character dies while affected, they can gain Umbral Influx and return as an undead creature unless the situation is resolved.

Ordinary torches and basic light spells are not a dependable solution in the deeper cursed areas. The practical early options are:

The blessing from Last Light Inn is useful for the less severe areas, but stronger curse zones, including the interior of the mansion near Last Light, require more reliable protection.

From Grymforge: A useful early route is

  1. 01
    Leave the Grymforge elevator area.
  2. 02
Search the nearby abandoned camp and the dead druid’s remains.
  3. 03
    Meet Lassandra’s Harper patrol.
  4. 04
    Continue towards Last Light Inn.
  5. 05
Obtain initial protection from the Shadow Curse.
  6. 06
Return to explore the eastern battlefield and House in Deep Shadows.

From the Rosymorn Monastery Trail

  1. 01
Enter from the Rosymorn Monastery Trail.
  2. 02
Speak with or bypass the goblin patrol.
  3. 03
    Investigate the Absolute camp.
  4. 04
Use a Spider’s Lyre if you want to summon Kar’niss.
  5. 05
    Follow or ambush the convoy.
  6. 06
Obtain a functioning Moonlantern or proceed under another form of curse protection.

Residents, visitors and factions

The Ruined Battlefield has few ordinary living residents. Most apparent inhabitants are travellers, patrols, victims of the curse or creatures altered by it.

Harpers

Lassandra leads the Harper scouts encountered on the Grymforge route. Depending on the player’s route and choices, the Harpers can become allies in the attempt to intercept the Absolute convoy and acquire Kar’niss’s Moonlantern.

Cult of the Absolute

The Absolute’s temporary camp is a relay point for the convoy travelling towards Moonrise Towers. The convoy’s guide is Kar’niss, a drider carrying an operational Moonlantern. The party can summon him with a Spider’s Lyre obtained through Act Two’s preceding events, then travel with the convoy or turn against it.

House in Deep Shadows

Oliver is a shadow-touched child associated with the House in Deep Shadows. His game is part of Lift the Shadow Curse. Playing through both rounds can produce the Ring of Shadows, while the encounter can also provide background inspiration and lead into the wider quest involving Thaniel.

Other named or story-associated figures

Rolan’s encounter is time-sensitive once the relevant quest has begun. Korliss is encountered as a corpse near the shadow mastiff ambush and can be questioned with Speak with Dead. Elegis is one of the fallen refugees found near the Mountain Pass side of the region.

Named directory: ordinary NPCs and story-associated characters

This list separates characters actually associated with the Ruined Battlefield from Last Light Inn residents such as Isobel, Jaheira and the tiefling refugees, who belong to the neighbouring sanctuary rather than this region.

Major encounters

Harper convoy ambush

The convoy encounter can occur through more than one route:

The confrontation occurs near a ruined house. The party must ultimately choose a side, although dialogue checks can sometimes convince Kar’niss to surrender the Moonlantern without a full battle. Once Kar’niss is dealt with, the party can obtain his working Moonlantern.

If the party escorts the convoy all the way to Moonrise Towers and allows Kar’niss to disappear with the lantern, killing him later may provoke the hostility of nearby guards. This makes the ambush route the safer opportunity for obtaining the Moonlantern directly.

House in Deep Shadows and Oliver

The farmhouse is south-east of Last Light Inn, near the Shadowed Battlefield waypoint. Fresh flowers grow around it despite the curse, making it one of the region’s clearest signs that something unusual is happening there.

Oliver invites the party to play hide-and-seek. The encounter can be approached stealthily with one character, particularly if the rest of the party would otherwise be detected. Participating in both rounds can result in the Ring of Shadows. Depending on the state of the wider quest, Oliver may accuse the party of cheating and open a portal towards Reithwin Town.

The Grey Scout’s Journal can help mark or identify the location, while Halsin’s quest dialogue can also direct the party towards it.

Shadow-cursed flora

Several ambushes are built around suspicious plants, bait chests or cursed terrain.

The shambling mound can yield the Ironwood Club. The shadow mastiff alpha can yield the Shadow-Cloaked Ring. The gilded chest contains Frost Prince alongside random alchemical ingredients.

Shadow mastiff torches

The mastiff encounter is staged around torches carrying a continual-flame effect. A successful Arcana check can identify their magical nature. Destroying all the torches causes the mastiff pack to appear. The nearby corpse of True Soul Korliss can be questioned, and her backpack contains a Potion of Greater Healing and Korliss’s diary.

Meazels

Meazels occupy another dangerous route through the battlefield. The encounter can surprise the party if a passive Perception check is failed. The documented surprise threshold for the Ruined Battlefield meazels is DC 18.

---

Old Battlefield

The most literal battlefield lies near the riverbank. It contains:

Some skeletons provide ordinary loot, while others prompt narration identifying the dead as belonging to rival sides, including Emerald Grove druids and Ketheric Thorm’s Dark Justiciars. A successful History check near the siege engines can provide additional context about the scale of the battle and the curse that followed it.

The site is important for understanding the region’s history. Reithwin had once been connected with Selûnite worship. Ketheric’s forces fought the Harpers, druids and other Selûnite-aligned defenders, and Ketheric unleashed the Shadow Curse after his defeat.

---

Mansion across the Last Light

A side path from the protected Last Light area reaches an abandoned mansion. Although it is close to Last Light Inn, its interior is treated as a particularly severe section of the curse. Isobel’s blessing is not enough protection there.

The armour chest requires a DC 16 Sleight of Hand check to open. This is a useful detour for characters who can exploit stealth, invisibility or strong curse protection.

Items and collectibles

Named equipment and notable loot directory

Not every item in this directory comes from the same encounter. Some are found in chests, some come from named enemies, and some are associated with the broader Ruined Battlefield loot tables. The most clearly documented fixed rewards include Frost Prince from the blight ambush, Ironwood Club from the Shadow-Cursed Shambling Mound, Shadow-Cloaked Ring from the Shadow Mastiff Alpha, Penumbral Armour from the mansion and Ring of Shadows from Oliver or his game.

Documents and quest clues

The Dead Druid’s Journal explains the writer’s experience of the curse and can grant the Sage inspiration Corrupted Beyond Recognition when read. The unsent letter carried by the graverobber adds a camp marker to the map.

Alchemical ingredients

Many ordinary Act One herbs are less commonly found as free-standing plants here and may instead appear through containers or trading.

Chests and hidden treasure

Several chest contents are random rather than fixed. In particular, the blight-guarded chest and some buried chests should be treated as minor or variable loot rather than guaranteed named rewards.

Suggested exploration route

If entering from the Rosymorn Monastery Trail

The best general policy is to complete the convoy decision before travelling deep into the region. It avoids losing access to Kar’niss’s Moonlantern or allowing the convoy to progress beyond a convenient opportunity to confront it.

Missable and time-sensitive content

Rolan

Once Find Rolan in the Shadows has begun, approaching Rolan’s location starts his fight with the shadow creatures. If the party does not intervene in time, he can be killed. This is one of the most important practical warnings for a first playthrough.

Convoy state

The exact sequence depends on whether the party:

These are progression states of the same Act Two region, not separate maps or continuities.

Lift the Shadow Curse

The Ruined Battlefield is central to Lift the Shadow Curse. House in Deep Shadows is associated with Oliver, while the wider quest also involves Halsin, Thaniel and the Shadowfell. The quest’s progress can alter the state of the land and its characters.

---

Lore

The battlefield is the physical remains of the conflict that destroyed old Reithwin. Ketheric Thorm’s Dark Justiciars fought against defenders linked to Selûne, the Harpers and the Emerald Grove. Ketheric’s defeat did not restore the land. Instead, he unleashed the Shadow Curse, which spread over Reithwin, Moonrise and the surrounding countryside.

The result is a region caught between ordinary ruin and supernatural decay. The siege equipment has already rusted, the combatants have become anonymous skeletons, and surviving wildlife has been twisted into blights, shadow mastiffs and other cursed creatures. House in Deep Shadows provides the strongest contrast: flowers still grow there, suggesting that the curse is not uniform and that the land’s spiritual corruption has a recoverable centre.
